Vintage or retro wiring well known to the older generation, at the beginning of the twentieth century, it was used to provide premises with electricity. Increasingly, owners of private houses began to use the service - retro style, and well-known designers, creating an original and spectacular project, often use retro style in modern wooden house by seeking help retro electrician.

Modern vintage electrical wiring is absolutely safe, as manufacturers use modern insulating refractory materials. Due to the installation method, this kind of wiring is referred to as outdoor or external, and is located in houses and wooden buildings to convey the uniqueness of the atmosphere of the end of the last century.

If you are a fan of retro style and want to decorate in vintage style your home, then you should better understand the nuances retro wiring.

For retro wiring use 2- and 3-wire special wires that are twisted for a vintage look. For the installation of this kind of wiring, special insulators and junction boxes are required. In modern sales, there are already ready-made, spectacular classic wiring harnesses, in accordance with the established standards of combustibility and smoke emission. Now, everything is much simpler, it is not at all necessary, as in the old days, to make them yourself. For the safety of your home, in order to avoid fires and short circuits, it is advisable to resort to the services of specialized stores and. Many famous brands produce original accessories such as rollers, not forgetting switches, sockets, as well as wiring kits, shrink tubes, etc.

The open wiring of the last century was, in fact, two single-core wires twisted into a spiral, mounted on support insulators - rollers. There were no separation boxes at all, and the connected wires were hidden under the main wire so that the ends did not stick out. Naturally, in our time, such wiring is quite dangerous and is not used.

Nowadays, as a rule, imitation of vintage wiring is performed, using accessories made of porcelain. Braid modern retro wire on hit open fire does not burn and has a self-extinguishing effect. Installation of retro electrical wiring - the pleasure is not cheap, and many, trying to save money, use a regular cable, weaving it together. However, this requires a fairly high knowledge in the field of electrics and great experience work.

The quality of retro wiring installation implies several important questions, and you need to know the answers to them:

What is vintage wiring?

Retro wire - stranded copper wire, it is covered with modern insulating material made of non-flammable synthetics, with a wide variety of fashionable and stylish colors, but with a standard wire cross-section for this type of wiring:

  • 2 x 0.75
  • 3 x 0.75
  • 2 x 1.5
  • 3 x 1.5
  • 2 x 2.5
  • 3 x 2.5

Electrolaboratory wires for retro-style household equipment are not available from all manufacturers. Porcelain and plastic insulators and rollers hold retro wiring in place. They are the most reliable and fire-safe.

Junction boxes, in turn, serve to connect cable products, they are represented by a wide range of colors and different diameters from 70 - 90 mm and a height of 35 - 55 mm. Retro style switches: single position, two position and switches. Also sockets with grounding and without.

Where is it installed?

Usually in cottages country houses using in the construction of logs, frame, panel houses. For laying internal wiring, it is necessary to drill the wooden walls of the house, which is not entirely advisable, but open wiring performed in retro style, not only aesthetic, but always in front of our eyes.

One of the main advantages is the ability to replace or repair it without resorting to complex repair work. However, in houses made of gas silicate, brick and concrete with a masterfully thought-out design, it also looks great, creating the flavor of a bygone era. A twisted retro wire can be two or three cores, it depends on the expected load on it.

The nuances of vintage electrical wiring

Before starting the installation, it is necessary to develop a clear plan for dispersing all necessary components and units:

  1. switches and sockets
  2. lamps and household appliances
  3. switchboard equipment

When installing a wall-mounted electrical panel, it is impossible to do without a cable - a channel that runs from the electrical panel to the junction box, in which the number of power lines does not exceed three.

Do not forget that the maximum cross section of the retro wire is 2.5, and the current strength is 20 amperes.

For a beautiful and symmetrical arrangement of electrical wiring, first mark the places installation of junction boxes, sockets and switches.

Installation of sockets and switches carried out first and only after that, the wire is pulled to the junction boxes, then basting under the insulators, and it is advisable to install the first insulator no further than 5 cm from the socket, switch or junction box.

The conductors of a copper electrical cable have plasticity, which determines a slight sag, with a symmetrical arrangement, the distance should not be more than 40 cm.

Connect wires in junction boxes in several ways. Welding is the most optimal, but it can only be entrusted to a professional. The other two methods, crimping and terminal installation, are simpler and can be used when self installation wiring.

The main condition for performing this kind of work is the necessary skill, knowledge and the right tool. The junction box has a small volume, which should be taken into account when planning.

Creating comfort and adhering to the developed design, remember the safety measures and contact experienced professionals.

With the growing popularity of ecological and retro style in architectural design become effective simple ways organization of communications in the house. Electro retro wiring on insulators is an open version of the electrical network device, which is based on twisted single-core cables. These twisted single-core cables are mounted on walls thanks to special rollers.

Installation of electrical wiring on insulators is a painstaking process and requires the organization of a circuit and calculations of the load on the circuit. This gasket option is the oldest. It was actively used in the 20-40s of the last century.

This way of laying the wire is also called retro wiring. It is popular as an alternative to cables in plastic boxes. The advantages of such wiring include:

  • visual component. Beautifully woven insulated wire looks better than the white plastic box;
  • quick access to trouble spots;
  • open type. In wooden houses, where it is very difficult to organize concealed wiring the vintage version will be optimal;

Preparing for the installation of semi-antique electrical wiring

Accessories for retro wiring

The preparatory stage is an important part in the implementation of any repair. Before you start wiring, you need to purchase:

  • cable of the required section;
  • overhead switches and sockets;
  • distribution boxes.

Such electrification of the house is carried out only after the completion of the finishing work of the house. The wiring is mounted on wooden walls, over wallpaper or painted walls. The electrical equipment market offers fans of retro and eco-style a wide variety of switches and sockets, wires with insulation different color. The price depends on the color. Gold wires will cost twice as much as brown wires.

Rules for choosing electrical network elements for a wooden house

According to the PUE, the cable is mounted at a distance of more than one centimeter from the internal surfaces of the building. This is necessary to reduce the area of contact of the network with wooden walls and ceiling. Wiring in a wooden house, according to the rules for electrical installations, must be located outside.

Antique electrical wiring in a wooden house is usually used with double insulation. The first layer protects the wire from external environment. It is made from polyvinyl chloride. The second insulation is cotton or silk. It is impregnated with fire-resistant varnish.

Depends on the power of the lighting line. A 1.5 mm wire is usually enough to connect a house, but you can choose a stranded copper wire with a cross section of 2.5 square millimeter. For exact definition wire cross section, you need to determine the total load that is created by all electrical appliances.

Cable for electrical wiring on insulators

Cable and insulators for retro wiring.

For the organization of semi-antique electrical wiring, three- or four-wire wires are chosen. According to the PUE, retro wiring must necessarily have. When designing such wiring, a beam scheme is necessary. It is important to comply with the following requirements:

  1. On the line for lighting, using a wire with a cross section of 1.5 millimeters square, the allowable power is 2 kW. The total current that the line consumes should be no more than 10 A.
  2. For sockets you need a cable with a half-millimeter cross section. For socket groups, the maximum connection power is 3 kW. The total current must be no more than 16 Amps.
  3. If in living rooms such retro wiring will not cause problems. In the kitchen, things may be different. Cotton braid will get dirty in the kitchen, so it is better to choose rubber-sheathed wires in this room. The coating must be light stabilized. Very often, for the kitchen area, ceramic tiles are chosen as the material for the walls.

Antique electrical wiring on rollers can also be arranged in the kitchen, but in places where tiles are better to organize them discreetly. In addition to the rules, you need to pay attention to the manufacturer. On the market, vintage cable is represented by European and Russian manufacturers. Gi Gambarelli (Gambarelli) is considered the best of the European ones.

In addition to Gl Gambarelli, Fontini is known for the production of rollers, junction boxes and switches. different type. The design is kept in vintage style. These cables are quite rigid, but their main advantage is the presence of a fire certificate and incombustibility.

It is important to know that the fire inspectorate will accept such wiring in the house only if there is a fire certificate.

insulators

Vintage electrical wiring is mounted using patch points and junction boxes. For organization, overhead points (rollers) made of porcelain or plastic are usually used. Each of the materials has its own advantages and disadvantages. Porcelain rollers are more expensive but last longer. In addition, they are quite fragile and can be damaged during the installation of an external electrical network.

Plastic rollers are cheaper, not as fragile, but not as visually appealing as porcelain ones. The number of insulators is not standardized, but usually such a number is chosen so that the wires do not sag. 1-3 insulators are used per meter of cable.

It is worth choosing the rollers along with the wiring so that the insulators and the cable are in the same color scheme.

Junction boxes, sockets and switches

Retro sockets and switches.

Usually, manufacturers who are engaged in the production and sale of elements for retro wiring also offer sockets with switches, junction boxes. Here the appearance and quality depends on the manufacturer. Manufacturers from Europe are different good quality and attractive appearance, but cannot boast of a low price. Russian manufacturers offer consumers retro-style sockets. They have some pretty interesting patterns.

Most cheap option wiring organization in retro style - chinese. Their appearance is quite attractive, but the electrical component is not always reliable, and, as you know, they don’t joke with electricity.

Rules for installing retro wiring

The stages of organizing a vintage electrical network can be divided into several stages:

  1. Determination of the location of sockets, lighting fixtures and switches. For such retro wiring, sockets must be at a sufficient distance from the floor.
  2. Determining the scheme for connecting devices. The reliability of the electrical system depends on a correctly drawn up circuit.
  3. Route marking. Marking is done through laser level. The optimal route is selected.
  4. Roller attachment. Insulator rollers are placed at a distance of 4 centimeters from the switch, junction box or outlet. When retro wiring in a wooden room is pulled horizontally, insulators should be installed more often. The distance between the rollers is a maximum of 45 centimeters. If the installation is in a vertical position, then the distance between the rollers can reach up to half a meter. When organizing an electrical network in a house made of timber, they are guided by the number of logs. For logs with a diameter, the insulator is installed through the log. If the log is less than thirty centimeters, then the rollers are mounted through 2 logs. When turning the wire, two ceramic insulators are used, which are located relative to each other at an angle of 45 degrees. In the places of installation of sockets, switches and in the area of \u200b\u200bthe corner insulators, the wire is tied up. This is usually done with a fabric material that is removed from the remnants of the twisted cable.
  5. Installation of mounting boxes.
  6. . If the room has water supply or heating pipes, then the distance from sockets, lighting fixtures should be half a meter or more. Minimum distance from doors and window openings must be at least 10 centimeters. When connecting the cable to the outlet, you need to leave 20 centimeters for further connection. To prevent the wire from blooming, it must be tightened with a clamp. Then the remaining section must be dissolved from the insulation to be removed for connection. When leading the wire, it is necessary to bandage them at the points of contact with the corner insulators. This is necessary to eliminate tension in the junction boxes.
  7. Connecting and unsoldering the cable. When connecting, make sure that the wires are not twisted. All branches must be located only in junction boxes. From them, the wires can depart vertically or horizontally. If the cable goes through the walls, porcelain bushings are used through which the cable passes.

In addition to retro wiring, a combined version can also be used. Twisted wire is combined with cable channels. The main lines are laid in boxes, and the connection points with sockets and switches are made in a retro style.

Retro-style wiring is a painstaking process. It is necessary to determine the place for the passage of the wire, install insulators on the right distance. The rollers are fastened with self-tapping screws through a hole in the product, so the markings must be done in advance so as not to get extra holes in the wall later.

How to save money on retro wiring

If the cost of all wiring is high, then you can make a twisted wire yourself. This will help cut costs. To do this, you should buy a copper wire in a fabric braid and twist it yourself. When buying, keep in mind that when twisting, the length of the wire will decrease by 30%. For self-produced twisted cable, you can use a copper stranded wire (RGKM). This wire has a two-layer sheath made of silicone and fiberglass. Such a wiring element can be used in bath rooms. With independent maintenance of such wiring, it is better to twist it in the process of laying. If the conductors are twisted, then after each insulator it is better to change the direction of the turn.

The cost of elements for the implementation of an electrical network in a vintage style will be considerable, but a beautiful and safe interior is worth it. Unfortunately, Russian manufacturers who could provide good equipment for the implementation of electrical wiring in an antique house, no. One can buy quality wires, others have beautiful vintage rosettes.

Due to the lack of domestic products, the price of retro wiring elements will remain high.

Many country houses and cottages are built from wooden structures. Serious disadvantage wooden houses their easy and fast flammability in case of fire is considered. One of the main reasons for the occurrence of such situations include electrical networks laid with violations. existing rules. To avoid negative consequences semi-antique wiring laid open way, and most suitable for wooden buildings.

Retro wiring in a wooden house

Wiring laid in an open way in a wooden house is best suited requirements of the PUE and rules fire safety. In this regard, recently, retro external wiring, stylized antique and well combined with interior design, has become more and more in demand.

For laying such wiring, multi-core copper wires twisted among themselves. The veins themselves consist of many thin wires, giving them high mechanical strength. Such wires are quite flexible, which simplifies the installation of retro wiring in a wooden house. Copper conductors are protected by reliable insulation. For the outer sheath, a silk thread impregnated with antipyrines is used. Due to this layer, the very look is created that is fully consistent with the old electrical wiring.

The copper conductors themselves, hidden under the outer sheath, are reliably protected by modern PVC insulation, which meets state standards.

Modern electrical wiring, stylized in a retro style, has a larger cross-section compared to conventional conductors, which makes it easy to withstand high loads. Outwardly, such wires look more voluminous than standard conductors.

In order for the retro wiring in the interior to be normally combined with other elements, all types of shared lamps, switches, sockets and junction boxes are kept in the same style. The most popular retro sockets and switches for open wiring are white and black, as well as stylized wood.

Special attention is paid to an indispensable element of retro wiring - porcelain insulators. In addition to the supplement general style, insulators are used to fasten lines to be laid on them. All parts used with wires should be considered in more detail.

Porcelain insulators for outdoor wiring

Fixation of wires during outdoor installation is carried out using insulators, often called rollers. They are made of ceramic materials with the addition of a coloring pigment. Less common are rollers made of non-combustible plastic or metal.

All insulators for retro wiring have a characteristic figure-of-eight configuration. Due to this, decorative semi-antique wiring is securely held in place. The diameter of the upper part can be larger or smaller than the standard value. When using standard two-wire wiring, ordinary sizes are sufficient. For three-core wires, rollers with a large top to easily lay a thick twist.

Of great importance right choice colors of insulators, which can be combined with colors outer covering of wires, sockets, switches or with the walls of the room. Often used the usual White color if the wiring itself in the semi-antique wooden house is painted in light colors.

In addition, the number of insulators to be used should be determined. It all depends on the length of the lines being laid, since from 1 to 3 rollers can be installed on one meter. There are no firm standards, and the main criteria are the absence of sagging wires and the aesthetic component. With horizontal laying, insulators are installed more often, and with vertical laying, less often. When outdoor retro wiring is laid in a wooden house, the distances will depend on the number of logs. If the log has a diameter of 30 cm or more, it is recommended to install the rollers through one log. With a smaller diameter, the insulators will look good installed through two logs.

As a rule, insulators for retro wiring are selected together with the same wires. In this case, they will blend well and fit into the interior of the room. In addition to monophonic models, there are painted products decorated with various ornaments.

Selection of switches, sockets and boxes in retro style

In outdoor wiring, not only antique wires for outdoor wiring are used, but also switches, sockets, junction boxes, also made in a special retro style. They are clearly visible after installation, so they should be selected taking into account the interior of the premises, the combination of colors among themselves, wires and rollers.

Wiring elements from European manufacturers are distinguished by high quality electrical parts and excellent external data. Even the prices a simple product start at $30. However, such products are still used high demand due to long service life.

Cheaper sockets, switches and other items can be found from Russian manufacturers. In addition to plain products, painted versions for Gzhel, Khokhloma and other well-known painting techniques are produced. Often you can find models in the original exclusive design. The prices of such products are comparable to European ones, but their unique design is a significant advantage, and semi-antique external wiring becomes as close as possible to the real one.

The cheapest option is products from Chinese manufacturers. Appearance they have on good level However, the quality of the electrical part in many cases leaves much to be desired.

Retro wiring: pros and cons

Exposed retro-style wiring, especially installed in wooden houses, has significant advantages. It fully complies with all the requirements of the PUE, is safe in terms of fire, easy and simple to install, including with your own hands. In each case, it is quite possible to choose original version, the most suitable for a particular room, in combination with any interior. Do-it-yourself retro wiring perfectly complements general design antique houses.

The only significant drawback of such wiring is the rather high cost of products made in vintage style. This is due to the small number of manufacturers, and the lack of competition in this area. Too powerful consumers should not be connected to retro wires, since the copper cores of the cables have a maximum cross section of 2.5 mm2. This makes it possible to connect consumers from outlet groups, however, for a boiler or hob a separate, more powerful line is required. Usually such lines are laid in special or covered with decorative panels.

In addition to the usual options, retro-style wiring in a wooden house can be laid in other ways. Some owners, wanting to achieve complete identity, try to purchase original old sockets, switches and other products that are in working order at any cost. The greatest difficulty is the search for old wiring, but with a strong desire, you can find it. However, it should be remembered that worn parts do not guarantee stable and safe work home retro network.

Sometimes a retro cable for outdoor wiring serves only as an imitation of a working line, and a hidden line consisting of ordinary wires performs all the main functions.

Installation of retro wiring

Despite its specifics, as a rule, no difficulties arise when installing open wiring. Most of the attention is paid to design, color choice and arrangement of all elements. That is, retro-style open wiring must be laid in a certain sequence.

First of all, you need to determine the location of the laying electric wire, installation of fixtures, switches and junction boxes. All points and lines are marked with chalk or a marker. Only after that all the necessary materials are acquired.

After that, retro external wiring is directly laid. First, insulators are installed along the lines of future wires. The distance between them is 45-50 cm. For fastening, you can use old-style screws for a flat screwdriver instead of self-tapping screws.

Next, lamps, switches, sockets and other network elements are mounted. After that, a wire for retro wiring is laid along the lines and fixed on previously installed rollers. The wires are connected to all components of the network and connected to the machine. After the retro-style wiring is installed, a visual inspection of the connections is performed, after which voltage is applied to the network for a final check of its performance.

In a house built of wood, you can lay wiring in almost any way. Recently, however, designers have chosen. After all, this method has a number of advantages. Firstly, this is a good way to organize the electrical network in the house. Secondly, wiring laid in this way emphasizes the retro style throughout the interior as much as possible.

What does retro wiring mean?

What is retro wiring? The photo will help answer the question. Similar mounting method electric cable in the last century was considered the only one. However, after a while, the wires began to be laid in special boxes - channels, or strobes. Retro-style wiring has become rare. Most often, this installation method is used only to emphasize the originality of the interior. Recently, many manufacturers have begun to produce whole series of twisted fittings.

Today, consumers have the opportunity to purchase television, telephone and electrical cables, chandeliers, sockets and junction boxes made in the style of the last century. It is worth noting that porcelain, electrical plastic, brass and copper are mainly used to create them.

Retro Wiring Features

Most country cottages where this method of laying an electric cable is used are saturated lighting fixtures and a variety of energy-intensive household appliances. That is why during installation it is necessary to use copper wires (when laying to chandeliers and lamps) with an increased cross section (up to 1.5 mm²), and for powering sockets - up to 2.5 mm².

It is worth noting that retro wiring in a wooden house is not hidden in the walls. This is strictly prohibited. This fact is due to the fire safety of the entire building. Twisted electrical wiring in the house allows you to solve many problems. Cables practically do not come into contact with the wall surface. In this case, all sockets, as well as switches, must be overhead.

Basic rules for retro wiring

Retro-style wiring should be installed at a distance of 10 mm from the wall surface. Fires most often occur due to the lack of normal wire contact in the junction box. That is why each cable must be well fixed. For this, it is best to use special terminal blocks. As for junction boxes, it is better to install them in an easily accessible place.

Such electrical wiring is mounted in the house not only from wood, but also from brick. IN this case rollers are best fixed with dowels. When screwing in the screw, the sleeve is wedged. This element has a fibrous structure. Therefore, during installation there are no problems.

What you need to know about cable installation

The wiring harness usually consists of two or three wires. Its choice depends on the availability of grounding. After and before the insulator, before attaching to the cable, pieces of heat-shrinkable tubing should be put on, which will ideally match in color. This precaution will make the mount more secure. must comply with all fire safety regulations. As for the cable, it must be certified for laying open wiring.

Roller for better fixing with wood screws. Porcelain insulators should be installed at each switch and socket. They should be placed at a distance of 5 cm from each electrical point. The rollers must be fastened along the wire line at intervals of 0.5 meters, and at bends - 0.45 meters, as well as at an angle of 45 °. To connect the cable in the junction box, it is necessary to use terminal blocks for flexible wire.

Should I use corrugated pipe?

If the retro wiring in a wooden house is open, then the corrugated pipe can not be used. However, it is worth considering that a cable with a large cross section in this style is not made. Therefore, it is unlikely to fit into the overall interior. In this case, it can be hidden in the corrugated pipe. If in some places the wiring will be carried out in hidden channels, then a special cable with the appropriate fire safety index should be used.

Also, wires intended for energy-intensive devices must be laid in a corrugated pipe. For these purposes, you can use a regular plastic cable channel, which is the most suitable in color. Often, retro wiring in a wooden house is laid only in areas that are visible to the eye. This allows significant cost savings.

How retro wiring is installed

Installation of retro-style wiring in a wooden house is carried out in several stages.

  1. Determination of places where lighting and Appliances. Sockets should not be installed too low, as there is a risk of mechanical inadvertent damage. When choosing a place for terminal devices, it is worth remembering not only about safety, but also about comfort.
  2. The next step is to determine the scheme for connecting terminal devices. The reliability of the entire system and the amount of cable depend on this. If the circuit is optimized, then the wiring and all components will need a little. This will save a significant amount. After all, retro wiring and all necessary components for its installation are not very cheap. At right approach the cost of energy supply is reduced.
  3. At this stage, the marking of the tracks is carried out. The most convenient and easiest method is tracing using a laser level. This will avoid inaccuracies.
  4. Fastening along the intended route of the rollers.
  5. The next step is to install the mounting and
  6. Unsoldering wires and connecting terminal devices. When connecting the cable, twists must be avoided.
  7. Check all connections, measure resistance.

Finally

Installation of retro wiring will not cause much difficulty if you follow all the rules. The result is a good addition to the basic style of the interior. If you use source materials for retro wiring that meet all the requirements, then you can not be afraid of a sudden fire.

The most advantageous in a wooden house looks open wiring using porcelain insulators. Electrical wiring on porcelain insulators, made along the walls country cottage or at home can be wonderful design solution for an exclusive interior and give it a look of completeness. You can see examples of completed work in the Photo Gallery section.

The old-fashioned wiring looks especially beautiful in wooden log cabins, but we must not forget that wood is a highly flammable material and therefore the installation of electrical wiring must be carried out in accordance with all standards. Porcelain rollers today can be bought at almost any specialized store, and the wire for mounting can be used with a sheath of varnished cotton threads, such as BPVL or GPVop, or the more expensive Italian-made Gambarelli.

If you have any difficulties during the installation of electrical wiring, our specialists are always ready to help realize your projects and ideas.

Tips for installing open wiring on insulators.

The insulators are fastened at a distance of 4 cm from the edge of the socket, switch or junction box.

When installing sockets and switches, leave about 20 centimeters of cable for further disconnection.

Tighten the wire harness with a clamp to prevent them from unraveling.

Use a knife to cut and remove the fabric sheath, but do not throw it away, it will come in handy in the future.

It should turn out like this:

The remaining fabric braid.

Mandatory procedure for ligation of wires (the node must be located on the side of sockets and switches). In a similar way, the cable is attracted to the corner insulators. Bandaging is used to prevent stretching of wires in junction boxes, sockets and switches. Only after that you can start disconnecting the wires in the junction boxes and connecting the switches and sockets.

When passing through walls, use porcelain bushings.

Use the remaining fabric braid removed from the wire for dressing. The photos show the cable being tied with a white cord for better contrast.
