  • The canvas, unlike drywall, will reliably protect against flooding by neighbors from above, since it is able to restrain a large number of water - up to 100 l/m2;
  • In case of flooding, the cloth does not lose its shape, it is enough to make a small puncture and drain the water;

  • The canvas is able to hide pipes, wires, etc. from prying eyes;
  • The service life of such a coating in the kitchen reaches up to 20 years and does not require repair.

It is also worth considering that tension structures can be mounted in several levels, which creates a beautiful unique design. Various ideas can be easily seen in the photo. It is best to use this technique if the room is combined with the living room, this will allow you to visually separate kitchen space.

Important! Stretch or plasterboard multi-level compositions require high walls.

Flaws

If we talk about the cons, they are much less:

  • The stretch ceiling, despite its sufficient strength, does not tolerate the impact of cutting or piercing objects;
  • For installation, at least 5 cm from the height of the walls will be required;
  • PVC film for the first time after repair may emit a specific odor;
  • If the canvas is used to finish the kitchen-living room, it should be borne in mind that you cannot do without seams, they may be slightly visible;
  • Difficult and expensive installation.

Despite its disadvantages, stretch panels are increasingly used in kitchen design, some options for such finishes can be seen in the photo below.

Materials and types of paintings

When deciding whether to choose a film coating or drywall for the kitchen, it is worth deciding on the material. Different panels differ in surface texture, so the chosen design affects the overall impression of the interior, which is clearly visible when comparing photos.

Important! For small spaces it is better to choose glossy finishes, and for spacious kitchens, matte or artistic ones with ornaments are suitable.

Glossy canvases

Gloss reflects light well, due to which it visually makes the space brighter and larger. It is also a great choice for a kitchen with low ceiling because it visually lifts the walls. However, before proceeding with the repair, it should be borne in mind that the maximum width of such a canvas is not more than 3 meters, so several rolls will be required in a wide room.

Glossy panels in combination with the same furniture fronts are great for small kitchens in Khrushchev. It is better to choose a shade for coating light - white, milky, vanilla, beige. Also, glossy canvases can have a different texture: marbled, natural leather or suede. In the photo below you can see examples of kitchen design with glossy ceilings.

Matte coating

Such coatings are suitable for classic interior styles, and outwardly resemble ordinary putty. The surface will not reflect light, so the visually selected shade will not change. Differences of different textures of surfaces can be seen on the example of the photo.

Important! Matte surfaces are good for spacious rooms, the seams are not visible on them after installation.

Matte material looks calm and cozy, especially in combination with soft lighting. Options for using matte stretch ceilings in kitchen design are shown in the photo below.

satin ceiling

In appearance, such material almost does not differ from matte, however, it has a subtle reflection, due to which the color looks much brighter. Looks especially impressive white coating, taking into account the shiny surface, it will become snow-white.

Seams are not visible on the satin finish, so they can be safely used to repair rooms of any size. However, satin has several disadvantages:

  • Small selection of colors;
  • Photo printing cannot be applied;
  • High price.

art canvas

The possibilities of such finishing material are simply limitless, as they allow you to choose any image that will instantly transform the interior. Large and too bright patterns are not suitable for small spaces.

Most popular images:

  • Starry sky or universe;
  • light clouds;
  • Birds flying or sitting on branches;
  • Animals;
  • City landscape, architectural elements;
  • Frescoes;
  • Floral ornament;
  • Geographic maps of our world and fantasy realities;
  • Portraits.

Designer coatings can be with any pattern up to your own photos or paintings. When choosing a large image, be sure to consider the general direction of the interior. This stretch ceiling design is best used for finishing the kitchen-living room as in the following photos.

What to consider when choosing

Glossy coatings are good for small kitchens, but when choosing, keep in mind that they reflect everything. Therefore, there should be perfect order on the upper kitchen cabinets.

Both PVC and fabric can be used in the kitchen. However, the fabric is more capricious in care, while PVC is a more practical material. Plastic will not let water through in case of flooding by neighbors from above, but fabric sheets will suffer greatly after such an incident. PVC film does not allow the use of lamps more powerful than 35 watts.

Plasterboard coating

Kitchen interior design projects also often involve the use of drywall. Unlike PVC film or fabric, they are easier to install, which you can handle yourself. Drywall allows you to build multi-level structures different forms, it is a flexible and easy to process material. Design options for plasterboard ceilings for the kitchen can be seen in the photo.

single level

This design is best chosen for small kitchens, it will not overload the interior and will not make the room even smaller. For such a coating, only 10 cm from the height of the walls will be required. After installation of drywall and roughing, it can be finished with any materials - paint, wallpaper, plaster, etc.

Hinged ceiling compositions allow you to hide communications, as well as install lamps around the perimeter. To repair the kitchen, it is better to choose a moisture-resistant material, it can withstand the effects of steam and water well. Design Options single-level ceilings from drywall in the interior of the kitchen are shown in the photo below.

multilevel

This type of finish is intended only for large high kitchens. It is best to resort to installing several levels, if necessary, to separate the kitchen space from the living room using plasterboard. Such compositions can be very complex, structures of this type are mounted by specialists up to a week. Also, high walls allow the use of beams that fit well into interiors in the style of Provence, country, loft, etc.

Drywall is environmentally friendly pure material, it allows air to pass through, which allows the structure to “breathe”, and as a result, the ceiling base will not be covered with mold from moisture. GCR is durable and reasonably priced. By choosing the design of the drywall construction, you can change the proportions of the room. Ovals and circles allow you to highlight the center of the room, rectangles visually stretch the space, and squares are good to use to highlight a specific area.

When installing a two-level ceiling, you should pay attention to the location of the fixtures. It is best to place a chandelier in the center, and spotlights or led strip along the bottom tier. Design options for multi-level plasterboard ceilings in the interior of the kitchen can be seen in the photo below.

Choice of color and design

What color to choose for finishing a suspended or plasterboard ceiling for the kitchen depends on general design interior. For small rooms in Khrushchev and typical panel houses it is worth using light shades along with a glossy surface, this will make the space larger. For spacious rooms, you can choose darker and more saturated shades, and multi-level designs allow you to combine several colors at once.

It is important not to overload the ceiling surface, it should not draw all the attention to itself. It is better to choose neutral colors that blend easily with most shades. It's beige, white, milky, Ivory, light gray, etc. Different variants color design stretch coatings or drywall structures in the kitchen can be seen in the photo below.

For classics, it is worth choosing the right symmetrical shapes and restrained shades. The best choice will become White color or soft pastels. If we talk about texture, it is better to choose matte or satin ceilings, and when using drywall, do not choose bright finishes.

Gloss looks good in styles such as minimalism and hi-tech, this will only emphasize the modernity of the interior. Kitsch or avant-garde allows you to choose bright saturated colors, but rustic styles, for example, Provence or country, require matte surfaces with the addition of beams. How stretch ceilings and structures made of plasterboard will look in different styles The interior of the kitchen can be seen in the photo below.

Lighting

it important detail decoration of any ceiling surface, stretch or plasterboard. Light allows you to change the proportions of the room, emphasize the color or delimit the space into different zones, for example, the kitchen and the living room. The choice of model of lamps and chandeliers largely depends on the height of the room. In low rooms it is better to mount spotlights, while in high rooms pendant lamps and massive chandeliers look good. Design options for stretch ceilings with different type lighting in the interior of the kitchen can be seen in the photo below.

It is worth considering the color when installing the backlight. The darker the canvas or suspended structure from drywall, the more light will be required. If the surface is glossy, it is important not to overdo it with the number and brightness of the lamps - there should not be a strong specularity.

Make cold or light colors In the interior, you can brighten up using fluorescent lamps with cold light. The same shades in warm lighting look paler and appear white. The power of fluorescent lamps should be no more than 35 watts. If there is a need for a more powerful backlight, you should take care of thermal insulation.

What does the price depend on

Regardless of which version of the ceiling structure (tension or plasterboard) you have chosen for the interior design of the kitchen, it is worth considering several factors - they affect the price of repairs. It:

  • Room area;
  • The presence of pipes;
  • Niches and ledges;
  • The shape of the room;
  • Number of fixtures;
  • Number of levels;
  • Complexity of forms.

Maybe drywall is better?

A kitchen ceiling made of PVC panels is a common option to the will. Plastic has a number of advantages that distinguish it from others:

  • low material cost;
  • no need to level the surface before installation;
  • ease of care;
  • flooding is not terrible.

Moreover, if damaged, such panels are easy to replace, because the damaged area is replaced, and not the entire material.

The disadvantages of plastic include its flammability. When ignited, plastic releases toxic gas. Also, the material is not impact resistant. At the slightest impact mechanical force the panel is broken or severely deformed.

Everything will be in metal

If you seem to like the idea with plastic panels, but due to flammable material and susceptibility to damage, whatever else, then you can opt for metal panels. Metal ceilings in the kitchen are popular due to their durability and variety of choices. The following advantages should also be noted:

  • long lines of operation;
  • the relative low cost of the material;
  • not subject to fire and flooding.

A stretch ceiling consists of several profiles, between which either a fabric base or a film is stretched. And now the price for such streams is more than affordable. Moreover, the Internet is so replete with photos of stretch ceilings in the kitchen. Fabric for the ceiling is more durable, it is not afraid of temperature fluctuations. Also, the fabric during the "flood" passes water, but partially. The film is afraid of sharp objects and breaks at the slightest contact with them. But at the same time, the film does not completely bake the water. The film stretch ceiling can be easily removed and then fixed back (confuse with suspended ceilings in the kitchen).

Pros over other options:

  • ease of installation;
  • easy care;
  • humidity resistance.

Stretch ceiling also have their disadvantages, among them:

  • the impossibility of doing the installation yourself;
  • the material is "afraid" of sharp objects;
  • sensitivity to temperature fluctuations.

Stretch ceilings will easily satisfy even the most interesting design ceiling in the kitchen, which is facilitated by their diversity, as well as the lightness of the materials used.

Each of the above options has its own pros and cons. If you cannot decide which ceiling to choose for the kitchen, then in this case it is correct to assess the possibilities family budget and the effect you want to get. If you are tired of constant floods, but you want to live like a person, then stretch ceilings would be an ideal option. If you want to somehow update the interior and the ceilings are even, then decorative plaster is yours. If the ceilings are not completely even, then drywall will help you. If you want this beautiful and eternal current, then metal or plastic panels would be the right choice.

The kitchen is one of the main rooms in the apartment. It is here that culinary masterpieces are created, which are then served for a family dinner. It is here that a person finally wakes up, drinking his first cup of coffee. And because the kitchen is worthy of a good repair. At the same time, do not forget that all coatings - floors, walls and even ceilings - should be not only beautiful, but also functional. What should be the ceiling in the kitchen? About this and will be discussed in today's article.

Coating Requirements

The kitchen is a special place. Nowhere else in the apartment so many aromas hover, the air temperature does not change so much, the humidity does not fluctuate so much. And that's not all the features of this room. Therefore, the ceiling covering here should be suitable for him.

Consider the main features of the kitchen as a room.

That is why the ceiling surface in the kitchen must meet certain requirements in order not only to delight with its beauty at first, but also to keep it for many years.

The main requirements for the ceiling in the kitchen include:

  • practicality - the coating should be easy to clean;
  • moisture resistance - it should not be afraid of steam and deteriorate during laundering of fat;
  • wear resistance - since the kitchen ceiling will have to be washed more often than the room ceiling, it must resist various physical influences well, including friction, etc .;
  • immunity to temperature extremes; we have already talked about how this range changes in the kitchen during cooking, so a good ceiling covering should not be afraid of such changes;
  • inability to absorb odors;
  • environmental friendliness and safety; kitchen - a room with special requirements for the purity and quality of materials, and if they (requirements) are not met, then all harmful substances secreted by the wrong coating will end up in food.

It is advisable to choose a coating that will allow you to hide all communications under it (for example, corrugation from the hood), as well as affordable and easy to install. And, of course, the ceiling in the kitchen should be beautiful, so that it would be a pleasure to be in this room.

There are a great many types of ceiling finishes, ranging from the simplest and most accessible to everyone and ending with more expensive, and sometimes even elite options. Consider in more detail the popular types of finishes.

Painting and whitewashing

The simplest and most well-known ways to finish the ceiling are painting and whitewashing. The second option, despite innovations in the world of repair, continues to be in demand. Whitewashing was very popular in Soviet time and now does not want to give up positions.

The main reasons why people still choose this type of finish are simple:

  • cheapness and availability;
  • ease of operation;
  • perfectly leveled and whitewashed surface that looks really nice.

  • it is hygroscopic;
  • does not like temperature changes;
  • absorbs odors well;
  • difficult to care for;
  • serious stains are sometimes impossible to remove;
  • pieces of whitewash easily fall off and can get into food;
  • the ceiling does not hide irregularities.

Most of these disadvantages are relevant precisely in relation to the kitchen room. But do not dwell on this type of finish was, as it is still very popular.

If you do not want to spend a lot of money on finishing the ceiling, but do not want to whitewash it, then painting is your option. Such coverage better fit for the kitchen than whitewash.

There are several reasons for this:

  • the painted ceiling is easy to clean;
  • wide range of colors;
  • you can paint yourself;
  • all materials are cheap.

At the same time, the painted ceiling actually has very few drawbacks. It quickly collapses, the color of the surface can quickly fade, and excess moisture can lead to peeling of the paint.

Attention! A painted ceiling, if the paint is damaged, is almost impossible to restore. Most likely, you will have to completely change the coating.

Also, the disadvantages of this type of finish include the need for very thorough preparation of the ceiling surface before painting.

Step 1. Remove all old coating down to the concrete, rinse the ceiling thoroughly and allow it to dry. Delete old whitewash or paint will help a wide spatula. By the way, whitewash can be wetted with water to speed up the process of cleaning the ceiling.

Step 2 All small and large flaws (slots, cracks, bumps) neatly. Apply it with a spatula, as if leveling over the surface.

Step 3 After the putty dries, sand it sandpaper or grinder.

Step 4 Apply the primer with a roller or brush, allow the surface to dry.

Primer Concrete Active Eunice 10 l - primer for walls and ceilings

Only after all these steps can you start painting the ceiling surface. To do this, it is better to purchase the paint that can be washed. Give preference to trusted brands - this way you reduce the risk of running into defective goods. A bad paint will last much less than a good one.

Wallpaper and ceiling tiles

Two more relatively inexpensive and popular types of ceiling decoration, not only in the kitchen, but also in rooms for other purposes, are ordinary wallpapers and. Why do many still use wallpapering as a ceiling finish?

There are several reasons:

  • it is cheap;
  • you can make a ceiling of absolutely any color and even with a pattern;
  • the process does not take much time;
  • if in the case of whitewashing the ceiling, the cover material may crack, then this does not threaten the wallpaper even during shrinkage;
  • work can be done independently;
  • certain types of wallpaper are not afraid of wet cleaning.

But the disadvantages of this coverage have not gone away:

  • wallpaper may “lag behind” and will require frequent gluing;
  • they do not tolerate changes in humidity and temperature;
  • if neighbors flood you, then the wallpaper will have to be re-pasted (however, this also applies to whitewashing).

more practical and comfortable material for finishing the ceiling - this is a tile.

Its main advantages are:

  • fast finishing speed;
  • low price;
  • the possibility of washing;
  • resistance to moisture and steam;
  • durability;
  • a minimum of tools / materials for installation (only the tile itself and special glue will be enough);
  • no need to level the base ceiling.

How? It's simple: you only need the tile itself, glue, ceiling plinth and a tile cutter.

Step 1. First, remove the old coating. If you leave it, then there is a high risk that over time the tile will fall off with it.

Step 2 Degrease the ceiling and tiles for better adhesion of surfaces.

Step 3 Determine where to start work. To do this, pull two threads from one corner of the kitchen to the other - there should be a chandelier at their intersection. Then pull through the resulting center two threads perpendicular to each other from the walls of the room. It turned out four squares on the ceiling.

Step 4 Glue the first tile so that one of its corners is exactly in the center of the room, and then glue the rest, joining with it. Apply glue along the perimeter of the tile and crosswise in the middle of it.

Attention! There are special marks on the back of the tile - make sure that they are oriented in the same direction.

Step 5 Using a knife, cut the edge tiles to required sizes and glue.

Step 6 Close the gap between the tile and the wall with a skirting board.

Attention! If you decide to choose a ceiling tile as a finish, then opt for a seamless option. Such a ceiling looks monolithic, and therefore does not require additional sealing of seams.

Dropped ceilings

One of the popular types of finishes is a false ceiling. Some of the types of this option are perfect for installation in the kitchen. However, such a ceiling will cost much more than the above. Also, the installation of such structures is sometimes beyond the power to do it yourself, so you also have to pay the master for the work, and not just for the materials.

But suspended ceilings have a lot of advantages:

  • it is easy to hide communications under them;
  • you can install spotlights;
  • ceilings look more expensive and more beautiful than with conventional finishes;
  • no need to prepare the base ceiling for installation;
  • such ceilings will easily hide all the flaws of the ceiling surface.

The main disadvantages of suspended ceilings:

  • installation complexity - the structure is mounted by creating a special one;
  • high cost;
  • they “eat up” part of the height of the room.
