Today, painting the ceiling surface continues to be the most relevant and budgetary way of finishing it. Ceiling paint, its variety on the construction market, puts buyers in front of the difficulties associated with choosing a suitable composition. Therefore, before purchasing a paint that will last a long time, while not harming your health, you need to consider several options.

What compositions are optimal for the ceiling

In order for the work to bring the desired results, you need to know what paint to paint the ceiling. The compositions differ, first of all, in the basis used for their manufacture:

  • v odoemulsion provide high quality coating. The main advantages are: lack of toxicity, odor and harmful impurities; suitable for painting various surfaces; the composition can be given any shade using a color scheme. Also, the ceiling, on which the water-based paint is applied, can be washed.
  • acrylic... Among the main properties of these paints, it is worth mentioning moisture resistance. Other benefits include: long service life; are not afraid of UV rays; mask minor defects on the ceiling;
  • latex paint for the ceiling. If you want to reliably protect the surface from abrasion, then you need to choose this option. A ceiling that has been latex painted will withstand any wet cleaning and will look like freshly painted;
  • silicate- are created on the basis of liquid glass. They are not cheap, but the quality of the painted surface fully justifies the price. They are applied to concrete or plastered ceilings. It is worth noting that such compositions will not hide defects on the base base, since they have poor elasticity;
  • silicone paint for the ceiling has all the advantages of organic and mineral dyes. The main disadvantage is the high cost, which is compensated by long-term operation, preservation of the original color, and attractive appearance.

Which paint manufacturer to give preference to

Some of the best-known brands in the top 10 include:

The choice of paint for the ceiling must be carried out taking into account the characteristics of the room. For example, for rooms with high humidity, moisture-resistant formulations should be used. For a nursery or a bedroom, it is necessary that the paint is absolutely safe for health.

About compatibility

If we talk about the compatibility of coloring compositions, the following points should be borne in mind:

  • acrylic or water based paint should not be applied over matt or alkyd paint. The water-based composition will begin to collect in droplets, or flake off at the first temperature fluctuations. It is possible to impose a new composition on top of the old one only when they are identical to each other in composition;
  • as for dyeing stretch canvases, there are also some nuances here. For example, manufacturers do not recommend dyeing at all, since the water-based composition will not adhere to the glossy coating, and paints that contain organic solvents will damage the vinyl canvas. Fabric canvases can be painted with water-dispersed mixtures, and it is allowed to repaint the ceiling up to six times in thin layers.

Before starting painting work, you need to prepare the paint. Those compositions that are recommended by manufacturers to be diluted with liquid must be diluted to the consistency of fat milk. The only exceptions are textural paints, which must be applied in a thick form using a relief roller.

Quantity

To calculate the required volume of paint, the area of the ceiling surface must be divided by the consumption of the composition per 1 m² and by the recommended number of coats. The resulting value is multiplied by two more. This is due to the fact that manufacturers declare on the packaging the amount of paint that will be used to paint 1m² of a perfectly flat and smooth ceiling.

If the paint is more opaque, or gives a better result after applying one layer, you can simply multiply the ceiling area by the consumption indicated in the instructions.

The approximate consumption of different types of paints per 1m² is shown in the table.

View Consumption kg per 1m² (1 layer) Consumption kg per 1m² (2nd layer)
Polyvinyl acetate 0,55 0,35
Silicate 0,40 0,35
Silicone 0,30 0,15
Acrylic 0,25 0,15
Latex 0,60 0,40

Before you start painting, you need to prepare a rough ceiling covering. It must be clean, dry and intact.

First, puttying is carried out on the surface. Then a primer is applied to the ceiling, which improves the adhesion properties of the material. If staining in wet rooms is planned, the ceiling is treated with antiseptic compounds. They protect it from mold and mildew.

As for directly indoors, you can use a roller or spray gun. If you prefer the first option, please note that the long nap roller is used for embossed surfaces.

You need to paint the ceiling in the direction from the window. In this case, the first layer of paint should be applied across the window opening, the next - along. And so each time change the direction for the next layer. Before applying the second layer, the first one should dry well.

When painting the ceiling, specialists often use a spray gun, which allows you to thinly and evenly apply paint to the entire ceiling surface. However, before moving on to work with the spray, the ceiling must be painted over in one layer using a roller.

When working with a spray gun, it is necessary to select the optimal spray length of the composition (about 70 cm). They paint the ceiling with the device neatly, at the same distance from the surface, gradually painting it with the desired color, but avoiding the formation of smudges.

Glossy ceiling paint is an option only for perfectly flat surfaces. The gloss will accentuate the flaws, the higher the degree of gloss, the stronger. There are no special ceiling shiny paintwork materials (paints and varnishes), but you can use compositions intended for painting walls and floors. There are no fundamental differences in the preparation of the base and the application technology between glossy or matte ceiling paints.

Pros of glossy paint:

  • it wears out slowly;
  • easy to clean;
  • looks attractive;
  • visually expands the space (only light shades).

Disadvantages of shiny paintwork materials:

  • highlights defects;
  • pollution is immediately evident.

Attention! The price of varnish-and-paint materials with gloss and matt is the same, but preparing the surface for applying a glossy coating takes much more time and effort. If you hire professionals to perform painting work, then the total cost is higher.

Types of glossy paint

Paints and varnishes by type of thinner are divided into two main groups:

  1. Organo-dispersive - on organic solvents (drying oil, gasoline, white spirit, etc.).
  2. Water-soluble - water-dispersive or water-based. They are most often used for interior decoration.

There are two more types of paints - powder and solvent-free. When painting ceilings, they are not used.

Paintwork materials also differ in the type of film-forming component - resin. It makes no sense to list all types, since there are a lot of them. The names do not give any idea of the final result. It is better to read the information on the characteristics provided by the manufacturer on the label. The following parameters are of importance: consumption, drying speed, hiding power. For the kitchen, bathroom, bathroom, waterproof compounds with antiseptic additives are needed. Among the facade paints you can find self-cleaning, dirt-repellent, etc.

Attention! Finding glossy paint (especially water-based paint) is difficult. Latex coatings with gloss are not produced at all. If you could not buy the desired glossy color, then the only way out is to paint the ceiling with matte paint and cover it with shiny varnish.

Water-based glossy paint for ceiling

Advantages of water-based paints and varnishes:

  • no unpleasant odor, low toxicity;
  • dry quickly;
  • almost any shade can be obtained by tinting;
  • easy to apply, easy to clean off tools.

Disadvantages of glossy water-based ceiling paint:

  • work can only be performed at temperatures above +5 ° WITH;
  • it is impossible to wash the ceiling painted with water emulsion, the coating will gradually be washed off.

This type of water-dispersion paintwork materials is used most often for painting all surfaces inside the house. The film-forming component in them is acrylic resins. Paints of this type have all the advantages of water-based paints, do not fade, are affordable, fit well on almost any base. Advantages - durability, coating made of water-dispersible paintwork materials (including on acrylic) can be washed frequently.

A type of glossy acrylic paint for the ceiling is aerosol. It is sold in cans, suitable only for wood and metal surfaces, and is relatively expensive. It is difficult to apply it, it is imperative to wear a mask, but the palette contains shiny colors, including those with a metallic effect.

Another look with glitter is decorative mother-of-pearl (with the effect of natural silk). It is applied over two coats of primer, tinted to match the color of the base coat. "Silk" compounds are not suitable for coloring wallpaper. Option for a ceiling with irregularities - add special pearl beads for paints to the silk effect composition.

Organosoluble gloss paint and enamel

For internal work, paintwork of this type is used if there is no choice. Disadvantages: pungent odor, toxicity (the room must be well ventilated), fire hazard. This group includes:

  1. Oil paints (on drying oil). They are used to protect wood. According to the main characteristics, these compositions are not inferior to water-soluble ones, but they dry longer and do not allow air to pass through.
  2. Alkyd enamels and aerosols. These are artificial analogs of oil paints based on alkyd resin and solvent. They dry faster and are suitable for covering wood, concrete, metal. Alkyd aerosols, like acrylic ones, are rarely used for painting ceilings.
  3. Polyurethane enamels. They are suitable for coating concrete, stone, brick, wood, metal. The advantage of paintwork materials based on polyurethane resins is resistance to chips and scratches, abrasion.

The only advantage of organic dispersion paint over water-based paint is a large selection of glossy shades.

Preparatory work depending on the type of surface

The first step to a flawless staining result is surface preparation. General rules:

  1. Remove furniture, household appliances, and other items from the room. Cover heavy items with plastic wrap. Remove the lighting fixtures.
  2. Remove the old cover.
  3. Apply a primer. It reduces paint consumption and improves adhesion to the surface. The primer is selected taking into account what material needs to be painted, and on the same basis as paintwork materials. For example: for a concrete ceiling alkyd enamel is chosen - buy an alkyd primer for concrete.

Plasterboard and gypsum fiber sheet (gypsum plasterboard and gypsum plasterboard)

Preparing a ceiling made of gypsum plasterboard and gypsum plasterboard for painting:

  1. With a spatula, run along the attachment points of the drywall sheets and drown the caps of the self-tapping screws, which it will catch on.
  2. Wipe down the ceiling with a dry cloth.
  3. Brush all corners with acrylic primer under the putty.
  4. Apply primer to the entire surface with a roller. Once dry, apply a second coat.
  5. 24 hours after the completion of priming, prepare the seams between the sheets for filling with putty. Joining is often required.
  6. Cover the joints with a putty mixture and seal with a serpyanka or reinforcing tape. Apply a second layer of putty to the seams, wait until it dries, sand with sandpaper.
  7. Spackle all drywall. After drying with a spatula, remove any irregularities. Cover the floor and walls with foil, put on a mask or respirator, sand the ceiling with a special float.
  8. Apply the second (finishing) layer of putty. The surface should be perfectly flat. Another layer may be needed. Once dry, sand the ceiling again with a trowel or finest grit sandpaper. For glossy paint, sand especially carefully.
  9. Remove dust.
  10. Apply a coat of primer under the paint and leave to dry for 24 hours.

Concrete ceilings

Preparation for painting a concrete ceiling:

  1. Examine the surface. Knock down the protrusions with a hammer or puncher, widen the cracks with a knife.
  2. Prime all defects and fill with repair mortar. You can use glass canvas painting.
  3. Apply 2 coats of primer (the second after the first dries).

After priming, complete the preparation of the ceiling in the same way as for plasterboard (see paragraphs 7 - 10).

Wooden surface (plywood, chipboard, fiberboard)

Preparation for painting a wooden ceiling:

  1. Sand the surface with coarse sandpaper, an angle grinder, or a drill with a special attachment.
  2. Apply impregnation - antiseptic (against rot, mold, etc.), if necessary, fire and moisture protection.
  3. Fill the cracks with wood putty.

If the ceiling is new, without defects, then two layers of primer or varnish (under oil-based paintwork materials) are enough for the paint. If there is damage, then the tree is putty in several layers, carefully grinding each one. On top of the finishing layer of putty, a primer is applied under the paint.

A ceiling made of plywood, chipboard and fiberboard is prepared in the same way. Preliminarily (as on drywall), the caps of the self-tapping screws are sunk. Putty is used for wood, a special primer is taken for chipboard, fiberboard and plywood.

Attention! Glossy paint for ceilings made of wood, plywood, boards based on shavings and sawdust is the worst option, since it is impossible to achieve a perfectly flat surface on them.

What tools are needed to paint the ceiling

What you need to paint the ceiling:

  • ladder;
  • tray (tray) for paint;
  • paint rollers for the main part of the work - "fur coats" with a short nap are suitable for glossy paint, foam and velor are unsuitable;
  • flat paint brushes of different widths for the treatment of hard-to-reach places;
  • masking tape (tape) to protect surfaces in contact with the ceiling.

It is better to finish the ceiling of a large area. You can rent a machine for mechanized painting. The spray applied layer is thinner and smoother than with rollers. The possibility of gluing the villi to the painted surface is excluded.

Technology for applying glossy paint to the ceiling surface

Painting the ceiling with gloss paint is a particularly demanding task. Coating defects remain visible. It is much more difficult to achieve a flawless result without experience using a dye composition with gloss than with matte.

Step-by-step instruction:

  1. Set up lighting to see and fix any imperfections at a glance. Use a 15W energy saving lamp. Mount it to the ceiling on a temporary tripod, to the side of the paint bar, and move it as you go.
  2. Prepare the coloring composition according to the manufacturer's instructions. More is added for the first solvent layer. Pour the paint into the tray correctly in small portions.
  3. Apply paint with a narrow brush in corners and along walls.
  4. Dip the roller into the tray. Roll several times to evenly distribute the composition in the "fur coat". If this is not done, then there will be stains on the ceiling. After the pile is soaked in the process, lowering the tool into the tray, collect less paint. This will help to avoid the appearance of "sagging". You can roll the roller on a sheet of hardboard or a piece of linoleum.
  5. Apply paint from a window across the direction of the light rays. The movement of the roller should be zigzag, reminiscent of the Latin letter W or N. The next letter is drawn side by side, with a slight approach to the adjacent strip.
  6. After finishing the application of the first layer, remove excess ink composition with a dry roller.
  7. Apply a second coat of paint (preferably with a new roller), this time moving in the direction of the sun's rays.

Usually two coats of paint are sufficient, but three can be done. The last layer is always applied along the direction of incidence of sunlight - then unpainted spots and traces from the roller are less noticeable.

Difficulties arising with painting the ceiling with gloss paint and their solution

To make ceilings painted with glossy paint look flawless:

  1. Buy paintwork materials from one batch, with a margin. In different deliveries, even from the same manufacturer, there may be differences in shade.
  2. Do not thin the glossy plasterboard ceiling paint too much. Excess liquid can soak the top paper layer.
  3. Observe uniformity and direction when applying, otherwise you may end up with stripes that have a shade different from the main one.
  4. To correct paint imperfections, wait until it is completely dry and apply another coat. If this does not help, then you will have to completely remove the paint with sandpaper and redo all the work.

Do not use electrical appliances to accelerate drying. It is better to immediately choose a quick-drying paint.

Glossy ceilings in the interior photo

When choosing a coating for, you need to take into account many nuances. For example, the type of room: what fits in the bedroom cannot be used in the bathroom, or how well the surface is prepared. Let's figure it out for the ceiling in the apartment?

What to look for

Texture

The first is the textured effect, namely, how the emulsion will ultimately look on the surface. As a rule, manufacturers indicate this information on the packaging. There are three types.

  • Matt. Does not shine, hides minor imperfections. However, it gets dirty easily and is not suitable for rooms with high humidity - kitchens, bathrooms. Such a surface will quickly turn yellow if you smoke in the house.
  • Semi-gloss slightly reflects light, hides small defects.
  • Glossy glitters, reflects light well and. But the base should be perfectly flat, the gloss emphasizes all defects. Therefore, special attention is paid to its preparation so that there is not a single scratch, hole or protrusion.

The ability to wash

Some paints can be wiped clean with a dry cloth, the packaging says “dry abrasion resistant”. If you run your hand over the painted surface, a light trace will remain. Such a coating can be used in rooms with low operating characteristics, that is, in the bedroom, in the living room, in the corridor.

There are paints that can be washed and wiped with a damp cloth. Information about this is also indicated on the label. As a rule, these are more expensive types. They can be used in the kitchen and bathroom, high humidity and vapors will not affect the ceiling in any way. And the mark about fugnicidal properties means that the product also prevents fungus.

Hiding power

A very important indicator - hiding power - in how many layers the paint composition will cover the color of the base. There are four classes, of which the first is the best. To repaint a black surface to white (and vice versa), you only need two layers of a substance of this class.

In other words: the higher the opacity, the fewer layers are needed to paint over the previous color. Consequently, the consumption of the product is lower. The savings on this are rarely justified. Ultimately, the price of three cans of cheaper emulsion will be the same as the price of one can of expensive emulsion.

Water-based or water-based: which ceiling paint is better?

The water-based composition is almost odorless. and safe, it is distinguished by its low price and ease of application. There are several types of emulsion: mineral, acrylic, silicone and silicate.

The most budgetary one is mineral. Such a coating is used in living rooms, halls, bedrooms - where there are no changes in temperature and humidity. If water drops get on it, stains will remain, the water emulsion is easily washed off. In addition, it is characterized by low abrasion resistance. The most expensive is silicate, it is used in the kitchen and bathroom.

Pay attention to the storage conditions of the emulsion in the store. The fact is that it does not tolerate freezing and after that it may even lose its properties. It's easy to check: pour it into a glass jar. If the mass has stratified into water and dispersed elements, such a water emulsion can be used only in places where high quality work is not required.

Water-dispersion bases also differ in components. Available with polyvinyl acetate (PVA), acrylic and latex. The simplest one is with PVA, it can only be used in rooms with low humidity. While emulsions based on acrylic and latex are not afraid of water or dirt.

Which is better? Even professionals find it difficult to unequivocally answer this question. In general, water-based compositions are characterized by a higher hiding power, and water-dispersion ones - in strength. But, of course, a lot depends on the specific manufacturer.

Let's take a closer look at the most popular types.

Acrylic based

The price of such an emulsion is significantly higher than the mineral one, but this is justified by its characteristics.

It dries quickly, is not exposed to ultraviolet radiation, which means that it does not fade or fade even when exposed to direct sunlight. Relevant if the ceiling is bright. In addition, acrylic is tough and tough, fills micro cracks and is easy to apply.

Acrylic colorings are available in white, super white and milky white. But this division of shades is conditional: each manufacturer determines the degree of whiteness differently, and you can check it only in a store. Colored ones can be made independently by mixing with a color scheme, or you can purchase a ready-made version.

Latex

An even more expensive composition is based on latex. It can cover the surface of any texture: from curly wallpaper to smooth drywall. And it can also be washed, it is not afraid of moisture and has dirt-repellent properties.

This is a good option for new homes where shrinkage is likely. Even if small cracks form on the surface of the substrate, the paint layer will stretch so that they will not be visible.

Latex bases are matte and glossy. Manufacturers indicate the degree of gloss using numbers in the name: the lower the number, the more matte the finish.

Silicone

The most expensive type of paint composition, appeared relatively recently. There is also a hybrid - with the addition of acrylic.

They are resistant to moisture, dirt and even mechanical stress. Some manufacturers guarantee the safety of such a coating for several thousand cleaning cycles! In addition, silicone, like latex, is so elastic that it can be up to 1 mm wide.

Silicone emulsions are easy to apply to any coating, including concrete and not only inside, but also outside the building.

The main disadvantage of the product is its high price.

How to calculate the right amount of paint

To understand how many cans you need, you need to multiply the total painted area (in square meters) by the number of coating layers (at least two). Divide this amount by the expense indicated by the manufacturer. The resulting number is the required amount of the coloring composition in liters. But not everything is so simple: you need to take into account the surface of the base, its texture, and even the tools.

For example, for large areas, use a roller with a long pile, preferably natural. It not only absorbs well, but also gives off moisture easily. After picking up the paint, be sure to roll out the roller; a paint tray or even a sheet of cardboard is suitable for this. This way you will avoid paint irregularities. A brush will help to accurately arrange the corners; it is better to choose products with artificial bristles.

What paint to paint the ceiling in the apartment and at the same time save

The answer is simple: combine views.

  • Acrylic, silicone and mixed compounds are suitable for the kitchen. The resistance of the coating to dirt and moisture is important here.
  • and toilet options are available for cheaper, such as latex based.
  • In the bedroom and living room - on acrylic. It will provide the best value for money.

When the ceiling covering has already been well cleaned and putty, it is time to think about painting it. You will have to choose not only a suitable shade, but also the type of paint. For example, oil paint is not suitable for these purposes for the simple reason that only a film is created with its help, in addition, it has a pungent odor and dries for too long.

Some of the best options are water-dispersion compositions, as well as water-based ones. There are various types of ceiling paints.

Acrylic paint

Perhaps this type of paint can be called one of the most expensive. For this reason, it is not used so often for painting the ceiling. However, it has excellent characteristics and incredibly good properties. With its help, it is really possible to create a sufficiently durable coating that will be suitable for repeated cleaning.

And the decorative layer remains the same bright and does not fade at all. Acrylic ceiling paint is absolutely not afraid of sunlight. By and large, this is important precisely for colored ceilings.

Such compositions do not have to be tinted, because the desired color can be selected already in the store. Also, this type of paint does not exude an unpleasant odor and also has a viscous consistency.

Perhaps, acrylic paints are considered the most versatile and popular among all. They are not only incredibly resistant, but they are not afraid of abrasion, they do not have any unpleasant odor at all, they are not afraid of moisture. With it, you can create a long-lasting coating, it is easy to apply, and dries amazingly quickly.

But you should definitely be aware that after drying, acrylic paint darkens a little. On most counters, you can find a wide assortment as well as a varied palette.

Latex paint

Latex paints are considered one of the best and highest quality options for painting the ceiling. However, its popularity is not so high due to the price of the composition. The coating will be incredibly resistant to various scratches, and also quite resistant to washing. The latex coating has an attractive appearance.

If you want to cover the ceiling itself with such paint in a fairly humid room, it can be either your bathroom or a shower, you will need to use special impregnations, as well as primers. She has no unpleasant odor at all. And on our site you can find a photo of paint for the ceiling.

Matt paint

Various matte ceiling paints have no gloss at all. It is these options that are ideal and harmoniously suitable for renovation work, as they allow you to hide not only the flaws, but also the "weak points" of your ceiling.

Water-based paint

High-quality water-based ceiling paint is considered to be quite widespread. This is due to the fact that it is completely non-toxic, is not capable of emitting various harmful vapors, and also does not have an unpleasant odor, it is safe for animals and people who are in the room.

Then you can apply another paint on it, do not destroy the previous coating. Now you know which ceiling paint to choose.

Silicone paint

It is silicone paint that is capable of combining the best properties of organic as well as mineral coatings. It is considered the latest generation solution. With its help, you can create an elastic coating. She has excellent vapor permeability. The painted surface will be minimally contaminated.

Silicone paint is completely odorless and non-aggressive. You don't even have to take special precautions. Manufacturers use silicone resin to maximize durability. If we talk about the disadvantages, then these include the extremely high cost.

Silicate paint

This paint is mainly made on the basis of liquid glass. It is used exclusively to paint mineral surfaces. These options are not as elastic as conventional acrylics. It is also required to observe the necessary precautions, since such paints contain a small amount of alkali.

Criterias of choice

First of all, it is imperative to decide on the criteria by which you will then evaluate the paint. If you plan to make repairs, then the main key requirement should be the durability of the purchased material. The solution must certainly be plastic.

Thus, it will be possible to avoid a large number of cracks during solidification. Also, the paint should allow constant dry and wet cleaning of the room.

With the help of this paint, an even and fairly easy application of the composition to your ceiling should be ensured, hiding the most minor enough imperfections. You should also think about the so-called affordability. However, there are no clear solutions to this issue.
