Your furniture has long gone out of fashion, but you don’t want to part with it? Then there is a great alternative - give old furniture a second life. How to do it? Today we will talk about the currently popular technique for decorating furniture and other interior items - decoupage.

What is the technique of decoupage on furniture? At first glance, it seems that this is something too complicated, requiring costs and efforts. But this is not so, even a fragile girl will be able to master this technique and update any piece of furniture.

Decoupage is a special kind decorative arts, with which you can update any item and even furniture with glue, scissors and paper. Well, now let's take a closer look at this technique and find out how to make decoupage on furniture.

DIY furniture decoupage

Updating old furniture is a difficult task at first glance, because it is necessary to think through everything to the smallest detail so that the furniture fits into the interior. Therefore, the difficulty can arise only with the choice of materials, or rather a pattern for decoupage. The simplicity of the technique of updating furniture is the main advantage of decoupage. For work, a minimum of tools and materials is required. The choice of base material depends on the surface to be treated.

To perform decoupage of chipboard furniture, prepare the following materials and tools:

  • patterned napkins;
  • PVA glue;
  • scissors;
  • brush;
  • sharp knife;
  • varnish on acrylic base;
  • foam roller;
  • soft washcloth.

The main working material is napkins or special paper with a pattern. Depending on the surface to be treated and the idea, it can also be clippings from old magazines and newspapers, images printed on a home printer, or a specially purchased canvas with a decoupage pattern. In any case, if there is an idea, then a minimum investment will be required for implementation, and all necessary tools can be found at home.

What to expect from furniture decoupage? First of all, this is a complete update. If we are talking about a kitchen set, then you can completely update the kitchen, make it stylish and interesting. Anyone can master this technique, just be prepared for the fact that you have to be patient. No haste, we do everything thoroughly and we are not in a hurry.

Furniture decoupage ideas:

Basic techniques of decoupage technique

The main direction of updating interior items and furniture is attaching a selected drawing or picture to the surface different ways.

Decoupage techniques:

  1. Simple decoration. Needs to be cut out of paper or napkin desired element, attach it to the surface and apply a thin layer of glue on top. When it dries, you can open this place with varnish. In this technique, there are many deviations. Sometimes the master wants to add something, he takes a brush, chooses desired color paints and manually finishes some details to give the picture volume. Or artificially ages the surface, if necessary.
  2. The technique of "reverse decoupage" is slightly different from the traditional drawing on the surface. It is used to decorate transparent and glass interior items, less often furniture. What is special: the selected picture is cut out, glued with the front side on the reverse side of the object, and after drying, the elements of the picture are manually painted with acrylic paints and a brush in order to “show” the picture, make it lively and voluminous.
  3. Artistic decoupage - the technique of applying the elements of the picture is the same (cut out, glued), only if you need to achieve a single image on large area, it is necessary to finish the individual elements manually, shade and draw shadows. The technique is very beautiful, but complicated. It is possible to perform colorful shading only manually. Such work is considered expensive and exclusive.
  4. Technique "decopatch" - belongs to the category "decoupage", is performed similarly, only instead of a napkin or paper elements are used various materials. It can be either a special paper sheet or paper for silk, plastic and glass. The surface of the object is completely filled with individual elements, creating a general background. Decorating paper must be torn by hand so that there is no clear border. What is the difference between simple decoupage and decopatch: in the first case, cut out ready-made pictures are used, and in the second, a certain area or the entire area is glued entirely with pieces of decorative paper.
  5. Volumetric decoupage is an imitation of artistic painting, made on a volumetric surface. First, the elements of the drawing are applied (cut out from special paper or napkins), and after drying, each detail is drawn.

We continue our acquaintance with the basics of decoupage technique, now consider the common effects:

  • "gilding" or gilding. How it is done: a picture is cut out of a napkin or special paper, glued to the surface, and then processed with a thin layer of metallic paint: gold, silver or bronze. To achieve outwardly expensive gold inlay, sheets of a special material are used - gold leaf;
  • applying shadows with a brush and pastel paint. The paint is picked up with a dry brush, the borders between the lines of the drawing are masked to smooth out sharp outlines;
  • coloring the picture with multi-colored paints, in order to give expressiveness and volume;
  • artificial aging of objects, antique furniture decoration;
  • craquelure technique - a special varnish (one- and two-component) is used, which, when dried, forms cracks on the surface;
  • patination is the deliberate shading of certain areas on furniture or objects (places of frequent contact - edges and corners).

Each surface must undergo a certain preparation before starting work. For example, glass must be thoroughly degreased. To do this, it must be washed, dried, wiped with a lint-free cloth and treated with a degreaser (to save materials, craftswomen often use a diluted colorless dishwashing detergent).

Preliminary preparation is also very important for working with tin products. With a special solution (water and vinegar in 1:1 proportions) and a hard metal brush, the surface is cleaned of dirt, thus removing the top layer.

Wooden surfaces and furniture made of chipboard are processed with fine-grained emery cloth to smooth out all the bumps.

How to decoupage furniture. Instruction

For beginners who are just learning the basics of this type of decorative art, it is best to start decorating furniture with simple techniques.

To work, you need to prepare the following:

  • placeholder for wooden surfaces(if the furniture is old and there are cracks in it) or wood putty;
  • special glue for decoupage. If this is not the case, then you can use ordinary PVA glue;
  • flat brush (not hard);
  • sheet sandpaper with fine grain;
  • acrylic lacquer- can be glossy or matte, depending on the idea. Varnish buy for work with plastic or wooden surfaces;
  • scissors;
  • primer mixture for wooden surfaces;
  • stationery sharp knife;
  • a napkin (special) or clippings from any magazines and newspapers. You can print on a printer (color or black and white) any image.

These are the patterned napkins:

Step by step master class:

  1. We offer to update the old kitchen furniture. We start with surface preparation. Do not skip this point in any case - the final result and the life of the furniture depend on the quality of surface preparation. Carefully inspect the treated surface. Let's say you decide to update Kitchen Area- stick the selected pattern on the stools and countertop. Take a closer look at the surface, if there are cracks, they must be filled with a special grout, called the Filler tool. It is very important - if the defects are large, then it is necessary to use wood putty, fill in the recesses, and after the product dries, clean it with sandpaper. Wait until the grout or putty dries (it is better to leave it overnight). After 8-10 hours, it is necessary to clean the surface again kitchen furniture sandpaper with fine grain and apply a layer of primer (for wood). We are waiting for the primer to dry, do not rush, as the drawing may not lie flat.
  2. Preparing the selected image. So, while the layer of putty or primer dries up, you can prepare the fragments. To do this, you need to cut out a drawing from a napkin or paper picture, and then very carefully remove the top layer (for working with napkins). If you have chosen a large picture, then it is better to order a printout on a special printer (large format) to stick the picture without joints. Try to cut the pattern not with straight lines, but with a curve, rounding the edges. Then the image will look harmonious, especially if you have chosen a picture in dark colors.
  3. Applying glue: first you need to glue the picture so that the napkin or paper base soaked well. When working with napkins, try not to pour a lot of glue, as the paper becomes too thin and may tear. Now you need to soak the base with glue and carefully place the pattern on the surface. With a roller or brush (it depends on the size of the picture), you need to try carefully, without stretching the edges of the paper, smooth the pattern, remove wrinkles and swollen areas (air bubbles). Very important information: if you work with napkins, then PVA glue is suitable for this material, it does not need to be diluted with water. Well, if you chose a drawing on thick paper or printed an image on a printer, then buy a special glue.
  4. Surface treatment with varnish. Do not rush, first you need to wait for the application to dry and only after that you can proceed to the final stage of furniture decoration - applying varnish. It is necessary to varnish the furniture completely (not only the area where the image is). Wait until the first layer dries, apply another layer of varnish, there should be 3 layers in total, maximum 4. The interval between applying each layer is at least 1 hour. Such painstaking work will fix the pattern and extend the life of the updated furniture.

Look what beautiful furniture we got:

Decoupage polished furniture

We considered the option of decoupage wooden furniture, but what if you don’t want to part with an old polished chest of drawers? It is difficult to stick a paper drawing on smooth glossy surfaces, but it is quite possible.

How to apply a paper fragment to polished furniture:

  1. First you need to use a coarse-grained emery cloth to remove the shine. It is very difficult to completely remove the polishing, this work is long and painstaking. It is important to try to at least thoroughly clean the top to get rid of the shine. It is good if you try and carefully follow all the recommendations so that there are no glimpses at all. Then you can count on a long "sock" pattern.
  2. If there are defects on the furniture: cracks, bulges and irregularities - we carefully fill everything with a special grout or putty. We are waiting for these areas to dry, apply a layer of primer, and again wait for complete drying.
  3. Polished furniture won't have this beautiful pattern like furniture made of wood. Therefore, you need to work with a primer so that the surface “plays”. Use as a primer acrylic paint(we select the shade to match the tone of the furniture).
  4. We cut out the desired fragment from a decoupage card or napkin and paste it on the surface with a special glue.
  5. Carefully smooth the print with a brush or foam roller to remove air bubbles and creases.
  6. Now we have to fix the background. We do this with acrylic paint and a thin brush. We draw a contour, if necessary - we enliven the drawing with paint, drawing individual details.
  7. We carefully level the finished surface - we apply a layer of varnish as a fixative. We are waiting for it to dry, again cover it with a layer of varnish, wait for it to dry and repeat our actions again.
  8. If you are renovating furniture in the kitchen or bathroom, then you need to apply a final coat of clear varnish, and then, when it dries, apply a thin layer of wax. Such a surface looks more impressive.

Here is the result of your efforts:

How to decoupage furniture with fabric

To work with fabric, you will need the same set of materials and tools, only instead of napkins or a paper pattern, you need to prepare fabric shreds.

Let's do decoupage together with a cloth on a small bedside table:

  1. We will prepare the solvent, since we will have to remove the top layer of paint from the nightstand, and then thoroughly sand the entire surface.
  2. Then you need to cover the nightstand completely with acrylic paint (in this case it's primer).
  3. We apply a layer of PVA glue on the surface and immediately prepare the glue for the fabric. It's best to pour some glue into a spray bottle, add some water (or purchase special fabric glue).
  4. We cut the fabric or glue the pieces of matter with PVA glue. In this case, it doesn’t matter if you use the material of the same color or have prepared several multi-colored shreds. Fantasy has no boundaries, so you can safely proceed to the implementation of your plan.
  5. We are waiting for the fabric to stick, we allocate at least 40 minutes for this process, after which we need to spray the fabric with glue well with a spray gun so that it finally sticks to the surface.
  6. We put off work again. We are waiting for the fabric to dry completely and only after that we cover all the furniture with transparent varnish in several layers (break - 1 hour).

We love our work:

Decoupage of furniture with your own hands. Video:

In the life of every decoupage woman, there comes a moment when you want to decorate something like that, something big and serious.

1. White paint acrylic TIKKURILA JOKER.
2. Azure white and colorless acrylic Dufa.
3. Art acrylic paints VISTA-ARISTA: scarlet, Prussian blue, black saturated.
3. Acrylic paints LOVE2ART: country green, rococo silver.
4. Ground Sonnet.
5. VGT putty.
6. Stain.
7. Roller and a special disposable basin.
8. Colorless wood wax LIBERON.
9. Brushes.
Step 1.
This step is known to all decoupage - wooden blank needs to be sanded.
Since in my case the subject for sanding was, to put it mildly, too big - I entrusted this serious event to my dad, who courageously shone half a day on grinding the bedside table in the country. I don't have a photo of this fascinating process. I hope everyone imagines what a grinder looks like and the process of grinding.
Next, I covered the cabinet with wood stain to lift up the small villi. After drying with my hands, with sandpaper 100, I went through all the walls and secluded places.
Step 2
Filled all holes, chips and cracks with putty.
And this is how it arrived home.

Step 3
Also standard - this is a primer.
For convenience, I used a roller and a special bowl. Grun Sonnet diluted a little with water. I think that for the first layer it was possible to use the usual liquid primer for furniture, which is sold in hardware stores.
Step 4
Covered the entire cabinet and lid drawer with white Tikurilla acrylic paint, and went around the edges with brown, since according to the first idea that flowed under the glue, the style was supposed to be shabby, that is, with scuffs.

Well, then you know the story of sticking printouts. I won’t show the moment of my shame in the photo)), since the very next day I scraped off all the pictures and returned the cabinet to its previous appearance.
STEP 5. After it dawned on me.
Of course, I didn’t imagine the whole idea to the end, it was born along the way. But common features drew. I saw this cabinet with an aged frame on the doors and a flower on the tabletop in bluish-grayish-lilac-pink tones. I ordered napkins for this idea and it started here :)
I painted over the brown paint with white, as the scuffs in my new plan no longer included.
I applied an ornament with floral curls around the perimeter on the doors and on the lid of the drawer with putty, which I left to dry overnight.
Step 6
In the morning I drew the desired frame with a ruler and a pen. To make the frame even, and the dark paint did not climb onto the white, I sealed the borders with masking tape. I painted the resulting frame with a brush in country green color (added a pea of Prussian blue and half a pea of black to it). Then I waited for the paint to dry completely.

This is how the frame turned out on the doors and the front side of the drawer.
Step 7
Mixing color Ivory. We take a dry hard brush and in one direction from top to bottom spread light paint over a dark frame (dry brush method), aging it.

After drying, and a dry brush dries almost instantly, I removed the tape.
And started decoupage.

Step 8
I put a tissue paper on the door. To do this, I separated the extreme paint layer and glued a napkin using the file method. There are many videos on the Internet about this method, so I will only show the result.

After gluing the motif, the most interesting thing began - it was painting. If you have problems with painting, I recommend watching as many of Natalia Bliss' master classes as possible. True, some of them are paid, but paying for knowledge is a good investment :) Personally, I stopped being afraid of painting after her recommendations, which are scattered over several master classes. I assure you, it is a very exciting process.

In this fascinating process, I discovered azure for wood. Awesome material. It is very often used in his work by Marat Ka. So I decided to experiment. Azure creates something like a glossy film on the surface. I did the painting with a brush and a bag. As if she poked azure and beat her with a crumpled package several times. As a result, very good tubercles and stains were obtained.
First, I applied gray paint in this way. As soon as the paint stopped being imprinted on the fingers, she applied white. Then, according to the same principle, pink, then white and then blue.
In this way, I painted the end walls of the nightstand
Step 9
I really dreamed of starting to use molds, but there was no reason yet. I found such curlicues that almost completely repeated the pattern of the frame on the doors.

While my painting was drying, I fashioned blanks from them. And after about a couple of hours, I first painted it with metallic paint under rococo silver. After drying, painted pink color and with a damp cloth walked over the ribs. It turned out like this.

Then she painted it country green and also wiped it with a damp cloth along the very ribs. After drying, varnished. Here is the result.

I pasted all this beauty on the bedside table, I was really eager to do it :)

The insides of the bedside table, drawer and lid remained untouched.
After completed external process decorating, it became clear that I want pink shelves inside the nightstand
Step 10
I covered the inner side walls of the cabinet with masking tape so as not to get pink paint. Covered first with pink paint, and after drying with pink azure. The photo below shows the effect of azure on a gray background and on the shelves.

Step 11
We proceed to the next creative process - this is decorating the lid of the nightstand.
So, we glue the motives. The main one in the center and 4 small ones in the corners. Dry very well. Since I glued them late in the evening, they dried overnight.
In the morning I sanded it, with a 150 grit sandpaper and varnished it. After complete drying with varnish, I painted the background in the same way as the doors, only tapped the already slightly dried azure with a bag so that the tubercles were as small as possible. I dried the painting, sanded it with 150 grit sandpaper and varnished it again.
Only after that I took up the drawing of the central pattern, since after several polishing it became pretty thinner. I had a lot of fun :)

Step 12
We take a stencil and repeat the pattern of the doors. I have a self-adhesive stencil. I applied the paint with a sponge, pecking movements.

After drying the painting of the flower and the stencil, I once again walked with a fine sandpaper at 180. As if I had aged the paint. The main paint of the table appeared through it.
I covered the entire cabinet and the lid with 3 layers of varnish with intermediate sanding at 180.
It would seem that we are nearing the end, but no.
After I screwed the handles, I realized that I wanted to raise the cabinet so that it looked decent. Once again, my dad came to the rescue.
I will not dwell on the process of raising the pedestal in detail, everything seems clear to me in the photo. He sawed out pieces of wood and attached them to the pedestal. I puttied all the joints, covered with primer, then with white paint, then in the same way as the whole cabinet I covered with azure of 3 colors. I decided that this podium looks somehow empty. As a result, I drew something that looks like legs. And I glued the same curls in the middle as on the doors.
She turned the cabinet upside down and rubbed it all over with wax.

Well, that's what happened :) The result of my 3-week work.

classmates

In general, decoupage has been known for more than one century, and people have been doing this business since the Middle Ages. Currently, the possibilities of decoupage have expanded due to the development of computer technology and the advent of color printers.

Decoupage tool

To update the furniture, you will need a few items, without which it is impossible to decoupage. First of all, it is a paper drawing. It can serve as napkins, wallpaper, lace and even pieces of fabric. Everything depends on your imagination.

In addition, you will need special glue, a sponge, acrylic varnish, a brush with soft bristles. The number of items may vary. It all depends on what furniture decoupage technique will be used. There are several types, the main of which we will now consider.

Volumetric decoupage

The main types of decoupage technique

Exists five kinds decoupage work.

  1. Classic way. With this method, the pattern is supposed to be glued to the updated plane, followed by varnishing and grinding until a smooth surface is obtained.
  2. Reverse decoupage. This method is used for pasting any transparent products. The pattern is glued with inside subject.
  3. Artistic decoupage. It involves gluing a picture in combination with the background of the surface, to obtain a real work of art.
  4. Decopatch. With this method, the surface is decorated not with a separate pattern, but with many pieces that are tightly packed together and imitate the texture of some natural material.
  5. Volumetric decoupage. It involves the creation of a three-dimensional drawing using various techniques.

The main effects of decoupage

Conducting a master class, professionals focus on the following the main effects of decoupage:

  1. Gilding. This effect is achieved by applying silver, gold or some other metallic paint. With the right work, the effect of a precious coating is obtained.
  2. Toning. Such an operation is carried out with colored paints, resulting in a toning effect.
  3. The effect of antiquity. Achieved by waxing and then painting the surface. Then, after complete drying, this surface is rubbed, resulting in the effect of antiquity.
  4. Formation of artificial cracks or craquelure. It is achieved by applying strokes of varnish between two layers of paint. Thus, after the outer layer dries, small cracks appear, giving a special flavor to the surface.

Surface preparation

If we decide to decoupage kitchen furniture with our own hands, then you need to know the basic steps of this process. In order for decoupage to be performed correctly, it is necessary, first of all, to prepare the surface. First you need to get rid of the cracks. Small cracks need to be covered with a filler, and large cracks should be removed with the help of.

Then you need to wait for the complete drying of the foam substitute and treat the surface with fine sandpaper.

Note!

To obtain the perfect pattern, it is better to treat the surface with a primer.

If the drawing is applied to glass doors, then they must be degreased with detergent.

Drawing preparation and glue application

It all depends on your preferences. Choose the image you like and cut it out. If the image large sizes, then it is advisable to print it on a large-format printer, in order to avoid joints that may not look very attractive.

Further instructions involve applying glue. First, it is applied to the drawing, and then to the surface area. If the drawing consists of napkins, then PVA can be used for pasting. If decoupage involves making a pattern from thick paper, then you need to use special glue.

Decoupage blanks

Surface varnishing

The last stage of decoupage of kitchen furniture involves applying varnish to the drawing. First you need to wait until the image is completely dry and after that, apply varnish. The varnish should be acrylic and cover the image in 3-4 layers. Decoupage technology involves applying each layer of varnish with an interval of one hour. On this, updating your kitchen furniture (this step-by-step instruction suitable for decoupage of any object, optionally from kitchen set) ends.

Decoupage with napkins

The choice of furniture renovation style depends on your wishes and should fit into your furniture interior. Furniture decoupage can be done with several materials. The main ones are decoupage with napkins, wallpaper, fabric.

Updating with napkins involves cutting out a pattern from napkins, followed by gluing the resulting patterns with PVA glue to the surface. When gluing patterns from napkins, you need to ensure that there are no air bubbles with a roller or brush. To enhance the effect in conjunction with napkins, you can use acrylic paints.

Decoupage wallpaper

A very popular material for updating furniture, often even involves the absence of any financial costs. For example, after repair, there is always a certain amount of wallpaper that can be used for updating. Decoupage with wallpaper is carried out according to the same instructions as for other materials. The only difference is that you need to use a different special glue. PVA is not suitable for these purposes due to the thicker paper that makes up the wallpaper.

Decoupage with cloth

For decoupage of the interior, very often, pieces of fabrics are used as a material. The technology of applying a fabric pattern is somewhat different from decoupage with napkins and wallpaper.

Note!

If you decide to decoupage furniture for beginners with a fabric pattern, then you need to pay attention to how to properly apply glue to the surface so that the material holds well.

  • If the image is applied to an almost flat surface, you can pour glue into the center, attach a napkin and gently disperse the composition, spreading the material over the surface.
  • On a perfectly flat sheet, you can stick an image with an adhesive pencil.
  • You can apply a picture with a piece of polyethylene (bag or stationery file). The drawing is placed face down on polyethylene and moistened with water. Then the package with a wet napkin is applied to the pasted surface. The package is removed, the napkin remains.
