Water-based paint glossy white. What water-based paint is better and how to paint the ceiling in the apartment

The buildings 30.08.2019
The buildings

This is the question we often ask ourselves when building our home or going to make repairs in it. However, I will immediately note that you can’t answer it unambiguously. It all depends on the material and qualities of the base, the purpose of the room and the design of its interior.

How to evaluate ceiling paint

When ceiling paint is mentioned, in most cases concrete flooring comes to mind. But in fact, the base surface can consist of different materials.

For example, from plaster, wood and its products, drywall, ceiling wallpaper or fabric, etc. And for all these materials, you should choose coloring compositions that are appropriate in quality.

It should also be taken into account that the premises have different purposes. Therefore, LMB for them must be chosen based on this.

Ceiling paint should be judged against the following criteria:

  1. Economy of spending.

  1. Coverage level. That is, the ability of the composition to fully hide the previous layer at a minimum of its costs.

  1. masking effect.
  2. The degree of moisture resistance. This characteristic important for wet areas.
  3. Volumetric paint.
  4. Her cost.

Coating appearance

When choosing a ceiling paint, first of all determine what will be a priority for you - the visual perception of the coating or its special properties.

In the first case, you must take into account that coloring coatings differ in the visual effect they create.

  1. Glossy compositions give a strong shine to the facing. They look great on ceilings that have a significant area. Due to their high reflectivity, they visually expand the space.
    However, the gloss visually highlights and emphasizes all the irregularities and defects of the base. Based on this, if you are not sure about the quality and evenness of the ceiling, then you should not use such paint.

  1. Matte paints create a coating that does not shine, that is, it practically does not reflect light. Such compositions are able to moderately hide the irregularities and defects of the ceilings.
    Matte paints can be used for ceilings of all types of rooms. The resulting surface looks very aesthetically pleasing.
  2. Semi-gloss finishes are a compromise between the first two categories. The coating they create is shiny, but moderate.

  1. Textured paints for walls and ceilings.

In their composition, in addition to coloring pigments, there are additional ingredients:

  • these components can be a variety of fillers made of mineral fibers, polymeric and natural chips, imitating various natural textures and textures;
  • such compositions are able to mask significant defects in the base, due to the fact that they are applied in relatively thick layers.

When choosing paint for the ceiling, please note that it is highly undesirable to cover it oil composition. After it dries, it forms a completely air- and moisture-proof coating. This will provoke a slow destruction of the base, since the ceiling will not "breathe".

Why you should choose water-based paints for ceilings

For interior design, water-based paints and varnishes are most suitable. I'll explain why.

The advantages of such compositions

  1. It is possible to cover bases made of all types of materials with water-based paints. It is undesirable to do this only with metal, since water can provoke corrosion of the base.

  1. Such compositions are the most environmentally friendly and do not contain harmful substances. When painting the ceiling, there are no persistent sharp and unpleasant odors which cannot be weathered for several days.
  2. To remove the old water-based coating from the plane of the ceilings, there is no need to use solvents or cleaners. It is only necessary to moisten the surface and after 7-10 minutes the paint can be removed with a spatula.

  1. In most cases water sports Coatings are produced in white, the so-called "base" color.

As needed, you can buy a variety of colors for them in all colors and tones:

  • thanks to this, you can recreate any of the shades of the coating. This circumstance makes the design of the ceiling very convenient.
  • white ceilings are the most common and are considered classic. However, now their color finish is gaining more and more popularity. It increases the aesthetics of the interior, of course, if the tone of the coating is correctly chosen and accents are made.

Painting in terms of aesthetics, at least, does not lose to other ceiling design options. This cladding has very low price. Due to this, painting is almost always cheaper than other finishes.

Types of water paints

There are plenty of options for water-based paints and varnishes. Therefore, you can choose a suitable analogue for any conditions of the room and design.

Probably, there is not a single person who does not know that there is such a coating as water-based paint or, in a simple way, water-based paint. However, not all of us imagine that such coatings may differ in their composition and technical characteristics.

Therefore, I will explain the following to you.

  1. In fact, the emulsion is a dispersion (homogeneous) system. It consists of any two liquids that cannot mix on molecular level. In other words, it is a liquid that is saturated with drops of another liquid that are insoluble in it.
  2. If we talk about paints, then their emulsion types are a physical mixture of water, which acts as a dispersed medium, and polymer resins, which play the role of a dispersed phase (a kind of suspension).
  3. The main features and characteristics of the emulsion depend on the material used as the dispersed phase. Based on this, it is more correct to call such coloring compositions water-dispersion.

The same water emulsion

Water-based paint (water-based paint) is made on the basis of the dispersed phase of polyvinyl acetate (PVA). She is the ancestor of all water-dispersion coatings, because the production of such compositions began with her.

Polyvinyl acetate water-based paint quickly became in demand due to its very low cost. And the fact that it was even easier to wash off the coating than to apply it, only exacerbated the success of the material.

However, such paints have several significant disadvantages:

  1. The coating has a very short period of operation - 1-3 years.
  2. From exposure to the rays of the sun, the paint turns yellow.
  3. Water emulsion non-moisture resistant. From waterlogging, mold starts on it, and stains form. Ultimately, she crumbles.

Based on the shortcomings listed above, many users began to abandon the use of water-based paint. Manufacturers have begun to develop water-based paints with improved characteristics.

Modern water-based polymer formulations

As a result, coatings based on polymers were developed: acrylic, latex, polyurethane and silicone. They are not afraid of exposure to ultraviolet radiation and water.

By improving water-based paint with its excellent technical characteristics, polymers have given it the opportunity to rise to a much higher consumer level:

  1. On the this moment water-dispersion paints are not only a material for covering the ceiling. With their help, you can effectively decorate the premises and not only in the segment of low-budget repairs.
    Therefore, users often use this particular type of cladding, while harmoniously combining several tones of paint in the interior of rooms.
  2. Coatings based on water-polymer emulsions have good elasticity. They can be both glossy and matte.

  1. These coatings are not very easy to remove from the base during subsequent repairs. However, this is often not necessary, because the coatings are durable.

The main advantage that hasacrylate ceiling paint, consists in the fact that the coating created by it can be cleaned using household detergent compositions.

Peculiarities:

  1. Due to the increased elasticity, such a composition fills all the microscopic cracks and pores of the base.

  1. Therefore, acrylic water-dispersion paints are very economical. When the ceiling is well prepared for finishing, one layer of paint coating is often enough.
  2. 1 liter of acrylic paint is enough to cover 6 m² of surface.

Polyurethane and silicone water-dispersion paints are especially valued:

  1. When applied, they make it possible to mask visible cracks and other minor defects in the ceiling.
  2. The coating they create can be both washed and cleaned with abrasive compounds.
  3. It is fire resistant and has good resistance to mechanical stress.
  4. Among other things, silicone and polyurethane paints moisture resistant. Therefore they are the best choice for ceilings in wet rooms.
  5. It should be noted that these two varieties water-dispersion paints the most expensive among analogues.

All types of polymeric paints and varnishes on water based vapor permeable and non-toxic. These characteristics are especially important for living rooms.

Special paints for ceilings

Often, amateur builders ask themselves the question - what is the difference between ceiling paints and wall counterparts. I can answer right away - there are no special differences between them.

The vast majority of water-dispersion compositions are universal. Often they are labeled as "interior", in other words, their purpose is to paint the ceilings and walls inside the premises.

If you see a can in the store that says "ceiling paint", it will only mean that the composition is a little thinner. This is necessary so that its application with a spray gun is more convenient.

In addition, such compositions have a high degree of whiteness. On buckets and cans, this is what is written: “the paint is super-white.” These materials are tinted worse and are used only for finishing ceilings.

Coloring compositions for a wooden base

Wood and products of its processing (boards, decorative beams, plywood, OSB, etc.) is often used for ceiling cladding. It can also be painted with water-dispersion paints.

However, such coatings completely cover the natural texture and texture of wood. This circumstance is not to the liking of all of us. This situation belongs to the area of diversity of our aesthetic tastes.

For example, in the kitchen, wooden ceilings covered with light paint look very good.

Alkyd paints and varnishes for wood

  1. Wood has a high absorbency. To level it, the base should be primed before painting. However, the cost of water-dispersion coatings for wood is still more than for plasterboard, plaster or concrete.
  2. Dark woods are difficult to paint over.

Based on all this, the best option is to use for wooden ceilings alkyd paint. It has a high level of opacity. Besides, most of grades of alkyd materials are a "2 in 1" coating. For example, primer paint or antiseptic paint.

Before purchasing the composition, make sure that it is intended for staining wood specifically. There are many varieties of paints based on alkyd resins. However, PF enamels are most often used for wood. They include pentaphthalic varnish.

In addition to pigments and colors responsible for the color of the paint, they may contain the following additives:

  • nacre;
  • quartz chips;
  • marble flour, etc.

In the photo - multi-colored alkyd paints.

These components make it possible to create additional decorative effects.

Alkyd paints, as a rule, are already painted in some color and are completely ready for use. They have the widest range of tones and shades. They are juicy and bright, which makes it possible to recreate contrasts and accents.

Alkyd finish is durable, it is not afraid of the sun and moisture. Therefore, such a coating can be used to veneer wooden ceilings not only in residential premises, but also on the terrace, open veranda, summer kitchen, in the attic.

Tinting and impregnating compositions

Wooden ceilings are fundamentally different from other foundations - it is best not to mask their natural texture, but rather to preserve and emphasize it.

That is, when painting wooden ceilings with your own hands, it is best to prefer transparent paints that have a tinting effect.

There are several varieties of such paints and varnishes:

  1. The most popular now are decorative azures, as well as impregnating varnishes. Their main function is to protect the tree from decay.. Only secondarily do they play a decorative role.
    Such coatings leave the texture of the wood visible, the surface of the base is only tinted. At the same time, the coating has a gloss, it is tactilely silky and smooth.

  1. A variety of colored solvent-based alkyd varnishes are also used to finish wooden ceilings. These translucent compositions create a protective film on the substrate having good strength. It varies in terms of gloss.

  1. There are also glazing impregnations on a synthetic or water basis. In fact, these are stains.

They penetrate deep into the wood and color the fibers of the base:

  • with their help, a cheap tree becomes like valuable breeds- oak, rosewood, walnut, mahogany, etc.;
  • if the ceiling was sheathed expensive variety wood, the stain will only emphasize its texture and texture. After glazing, the base can be coated with a glossy, semi-gloss or matt varnish according to your desire.

Rating: 9 best ceiling paints

Below I present to you 9 the best paints in different categories, which can be purchased in Russia.

Matte Best Ceiling Paint

The highest quality brand of matte paint is Dulux "Magic White". I immediately warn you that I mean material made directly in the UK. The company's plants in Russia cannot always produce the highest quality products.

So:

  1. This paint has excellent light absorbing properties. They make it possible to almost completely hide all small defects on the ceilings.
  2. The material has a high level of hiding power. Two of its layers are enough to make the surface of the base look “one hundred percent”.
  3. In addition, the material has: environmental friendliness, low consumption per square meter, a wide range of tones, the possibility of applying to an unprepared base, ease of maintenance.

Based on all of the above, it is not surprising that this paint has become so popular.

The only negative of the English paint Dulux "Magic White" is its high cost. It is approximately 3100 rubles. for 10 l.

Best Gloss Compound

Dufa "Superweiss" - the best glossy composition.

Of the glossy paints, the German paint Dufa "Superweiss" is the most popular.

This ceiling paint is valued for the following qualities:

  • flawless whiteness;
  • silky gloss;
  • high level of hiding power;
  • coating service life;
  • strength.

Most of us like glossy finishes. They emphasize the purity of color and visually expand the space. Because of this, Dufa "Superweiss" is often used to paint the ceiling of small rooms.

The manufacturer of this brand also produces decorative materials that recreate spectacular patterns on the basis. Thanks to this, you can not only work with the tones and shades of the coating, but also create visual illusions, original textures on the ceilings.

The approximate cost of Dufa "Superweiss" paint is 3300 rubles / 10 liters.

The best semi-gloss material

Polish paint "Sniezka-Eko" is very surprising with the best quality / cost ratio. It is suitable for almost all types of substrates and has an excellent level of coverage.

"Snezhka" makes it possible to combine surfaces with different textures. For example, this is necessary when installing suspended ceilings from plasterboard. This paint does not have high moisture resistance, however, it is environmentally friendly and hypoallergenic. This composition is easy to tint to the tone and shade you need.

I want to warn about the minus of this paint. Its practical consumption per square meter is almost 2 times higher than the manufacturer claims.

The approximate cost of "Sniezka-Eko" coverage is 1400 rubles. for a 10 liter bucket.

The best polyvinyl acetate paint

"TEX-profi" - the best water-based paint.

Paint "TEX-profi" belongs to the type of classic water-based compositions based on polyvinyl acetate. In other words: it is cheap, spreads easily and almost does not smell. It is possible to tint the coating according to the TEX company catalog.

The main disadvantages of this paint:

  • high material costs;
  • increased requirements for the base;
  • not very good hiding power, the coating has to be distributed in several layers in order to get a high-quality result.

When choosing the composition of "TEX-profi", consider the features of caring for the coating. It, like all other water-based PVA paints, is easily washed off with ordinary water. Based on this, you will not be able to clean the lined ceiling.

The approximate cost of "TEKS-profi" is 1600 rubles. for a 9 liter bucket.

Highest quality silicone material

The German company Caparol produces the best silicone paint under the brand name "CapaSilan".

After drying, silicone materials easily mask or even eliminate small bumps, cracks and roughness on the base. Thanks to its tightening properties, CapaSilan paint can hide cracks up to 2 millimeters wide.

The composition has good hiding power and, under certain conditions, even one layer is enough for excellent staining. The created coating is easy to clean. It practically does not get dirty, because it has water and dust repellent properties.

The approximate cost that Caparol "CapaSilan" silicone paint has is 3900 rubles. for a 10 liter bucket.

The best acrylic paint for ceilings

The Rostov manufacturer "Empilis" produces the best water-dispersion acrylic paint "Oreol-Discount". It perfectly lays down on the bases from any materials, forming a uniform opaque covering.

Most of the matte compositions have a high level of hiding power. Especially when the composition is white, pastel or terracotta. "Oreol-Discount" will not be an exception.

After its application, this paint dries faster (1.5 times) than analogues from other manufacturers. The cover is easy to clean and wash.

Of the minuses, the following can be noted. The material costs announced by the manufacturer are often exceeded in practice.

The approximate cost of "Oreol-Discount" is 900 rubles. for a bucket of 13 liters.

The best latex composition

The Finnish company Tikkurila has been associated with the Russian consumer for many years with the definition of "high quality" when it comes to most types of coatings.

Latex paint Tikkurilla "Euro-7" has the following advantages:

  • coating durability;
  • color purity;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • wide possibilities of staining with colors;
  • resistance to solar ultraviolet;
  • good specifications.

I warn you right away: a high-quality product means real Finnish Tikkurila paint. The plant near St. Petersburg does not always produce such an ideal material.

The approximate cost of Tikkurilla "Euro-7" is 2800 rubles. for a 9 liter bucket.

The best silicate paint for ceilings

Russian-German silicate paint "Ceresit CT-54" was originally intended for external, that is, facade works. But it can also be used indoors - for ceilings and walls. The material has environmental friendliness, high hiding power, antifungal qualities, durability and ease of maintenance.

This paint is demanding on the quality of base preparation. In the best way, it lies on the plaster.

The approximate cost of "Ceresit CT-54" is 3300 rubles. for a 15 liter bucket.

Great Super White Ceiling Paint

Paint "Expert Washable" is one of the materials produced Russian company DEKART. The coating created when using it looks dazzling snow-white.

The manufacturer's instructions highlight the following paint properties:

  • it is not toxic;
  • dries very quickly;
  • practically does not smell;
  • over time, does not lose its original color, does not wear out and does not crumble;
  • Looks great in both glossy and matte finishes.
  • suitable for all types of bases.

Tinting this paint is quite difficult - the result is often unsuccessful. Based on this, the composition is best left basic - white.

The approximate cost of "Expert Washable" is 850 rubles. for 14 kg.

Conclusion

Now there is a wide choice of types and brands of paints that can be used for finishing the ceiling. You just have to choose the right composition that best suits your case.

After watching the video in this article, you will become more understanding in this topic.

matte paint on kitchen ceiling

The modern market provides the consumer with a wide choice paint and varnish products, among which there are many high-quality matte paints for the ceiling. All these products harmoniously fit into the interior of the room, complement it and ensure a long service life of the ceiling covering.

All coloring compositions are divided into three main groups:

  • Glossy - have a characteristic sheen. They are recommended to be used for painting perfectly flat ceilings in non-residential premises. However, on a surface finished with such paint, even barely noticeable defects and irregularities will be visible. Semi-gloss - less shiny.
  • Matte - the finished surface does not shine at all, and minor flaws are not visible on it. Exactly because of this reason matte paints are used most often.
  • Oil products for ceilings are not recommended. Drying, it forms a dense vapor-tight film, which contributes to the destruction of the floor structure. The best option would be to paint the ceiling surface with water-based or water-based paints.

It is difficult for the average consumer to understand huge number jars and buckets of various sizes. After all, you need to find the necessary product among the bright labels that make it difficult to choose and determine the prices. It can be difficult to do this without consulting the seller. But, unfortunately, their recommendations are often unintelligible and unqualified.

Varieties of ceiling matte paints

Materials for painting ceilings in residential areas are different from compositions for bathrooms and kitchens. If in the first case you can use any paint intended for dry rooms, then in the second case, the finish is carried out with moisture-resistant analogues, which include antifungal components.

According to their composition, matte ceiling paints can be divided into:

  • mineral
  • polyvinyl acetate
  • water emulsion
  • acrylic
  • latex
  • silicone
  • silicate

mineral

The basis for mineral matte paints is slaked lime or cement. It is almost no different from traditional whitewashing with a brush. Such a surface “breathes”, it is air and moisture permeable.

But the disadvantage of mineral paint is its low resistance to abrasion and easy washability.

Polyvinyl acetate

Such paints are made on the basis of PVA glue. They form a fairly durable coating and are not afraid of water. But splashes and smudges leave marks on the surface that are difficult to remove without violating the integrity of the coating.

Water emulsion

Water based paint

Ceilings painted with water-based paint are completely safe for the health of people in the room. The material fits well on any surface, with the exception of glossy.

On top of it, you can apply various types of paints. And if you need to remove it, then it is easily washed off with ordinary soapy water. It is the water emulsion that is most popular among ceiling paints.

Acrylic

Acrylic resins are used here as a binder. They make the surface resistant to abrasion and water. Ceilings painted with acrylics can be washed. Before painting, it is recommended to apply a penetrating primer to the ceiling in order to reduce the consumption of the coloring composition and improve its adhesion to the base.

Acrylic paint does not fade and perfectly retains its original color. But after application and drying, it may darken a little. It is believed that this material is most suitable for finishing the ceiling. Although there is an opinion that it is better not to use it in bathrooms.

Latex

The latex-acrylic base is superior in quality to pure acrylic. The surface is perfectly washable and resistant to moisture. This allows latex paints to be used in wet areas. The matte finish of the ceiling is silky.

Latex paint can heal small cracks, but over time, it can change its color a little and become lighter.

When dried, the coloring composition forms a thin film that is difficult to peel off. Therefore, before starting work, it is necessary to carefully prepare the ceiling, as well as protect surfaces that do not need painting.

Silicone

silicone paint

Paints on acrylic polymers and silicone resin are the most expensive among matte ceiling materials. But their high cost is fully offset by the quality and durability of the coating. It is practically not afraid of water, passes steam, is resistant to wet cleaning and mechanical impact, elastic and not exposed to the action of the fungus.

Important! The applied paint is able to tighten cracks up to 2 mm. Working with it is safe and does not require special precautions.

silicate

Such paints are made on the basis of silicate, or stationery, glue, which is often called liquid glass. They have a low cost. But their disadvantage is low resistance to abrasion and water. Silicate paint is applied to mineral surfaces - lime, cement, silicate.

Note! This material does not cover cracks, as it is less elastic than acrylic. Also, it is not compatible with polymer coatings, so repainting the ceiling with a different type of paint is very difficult.

The composition of silicate paints includes up to 10% alkali, which prevents the growth of microorganisms and does not require the use of antiseptics. But it is the presence of alkaline pigment that limits their color palette.

What can the inscriptions on the packaging with paint tell about?

Each manufacturer paint and varnish products trying to attract a buyer with something unusual. Multi-colored labels, names, designations and annotations can turn anyone's head. Everywhere in the names there are such inserts as "Extra", "Profi", "Prima", "Supermatte", "Superwhite" and many others. It is quite difficult to understand them. Therefore, you should carefully read the description and recommendations on the paint cans.

Maestro white ceiling suite

What can be learned from the inscriptions?

  1. "Dry Room" or "Low Duty". Such paints can not be used in wet rooms, in kitchens and bathrooms. It is also not recommended to use them for painting ceilings in bedrooms and in those rooms where there is a lot of smoking.
  2. "Resistant to dry abrasion." This means that painted surfaces can be wiped with a dry cloth or dusted with a vacuum cleaner. It is not recommended to wash such ceilings, otherwise unattractive stains will appear. After all, the paint will dissolve and partially wash off.
  3. "Indelible" or "abrasion resistant". Painted surfaces can be washed, but dirt from them is not washed off well enough. Although the ceiling becomes lighter, stripes remain on it.
  4. "Washable", "Dirt-resistant" or "Intensive wash resistant". Ceilings covered with such paint are excellently washed with soapy and even alkaline solutions, and more than once.

Also on the packaging with paint are the technical characteristics of the material:

  • purpose
  • expenditure on square meter
  • concealment
  • abrasion
  • moisture resistance
  • compound

On the label, such descriptions are usually made in small print. But this information is the most significant, although it may have streamlined wording. The main thing is to read it correctly and understand how correctly the matte paint for the ceilings was chosen.

Advantages and disadvantages of matte ceiling paints

Kinds decorative paints for walls and ceilings.

The basis of water-dispersion or water-based paints is water and additional components in the form of a pigment and a binder. Due to this, tiny balls floating in the water are formed. In the process of evaporation, they stick together and form a strong film.

The advantages of ceiling paints include the following:

  • There are no glare on the finished surface.
  • Visually hide the irregularities and defects of the ceiling.
  • The applied paint dries fairly quickly.
  • There are no pungent odors and harmful fumes, so additional ventilation is not required during operation.
  • By adding colors, you can get different shades.

However, matte paints have some disadvantages compared to glossy paints:

  • The painted surface collects more dust.
  • Pollution is more difficult to wash off.

It is worth remembering that the ceiling is the most "unprotected" surface in the room, so poor-quality paint or an inept craftsman can spoil the owner's mood and impression of the repair. Wall defects can be covered with paintings, furniture or textiles. But the ceiling is always open. A matte finish is most preferable for a ceiling, since such a surface looks harmonious and complete.

When purchasing paint for her, you need to remember some of the nuances:

  1. You can not buy water-based materials in the markets or in stores that do not have warm rooms for their storage. In the cold season, water freezes, the structure of the paint is broken and does not recover after thawing.
  2. Do not tint white paint yourself. It will be safer to add the desired color in the store using special devices so as not to disturb the proportions. If the coloring composition is not enough, then it will not be difficult to make exactly the same shade, which does not differ from the previous one.
  3. Quality paint is not cheap. You need to compare not the cost, but the consumption of the coloring composition per square meter. Do not forget about fakes of well-known brands with a lower price.
  4. Ceiling paint has characteristics such as increased coverage and adhesion, it spreads over the surface and almost does not drip. Therefore, materials for walls on the ceiling are not recommended.

Important! Some imported products may have a color cast. This is done so that unpainted sections of the ceiling are clearly visible. After drying, such a white paint for the ceiling acquires a snow-white matte color.

How to avoid mistakes when painting the ceiling with your own hands?

Ceiling painting

So that the painted ceiling does not disappoint, it is necessary to choose the right finishing materials and high-quality tools before starting work. And also carefully prepare the base and study the technique of applying paint. Otherwise, ugly yellowish or darkish spots on the surface, stripes from a brush or roller, streaks in side lighting may appear. So treat yourself self-painting with all responsibility.

  1. It is necessary to carefully level the surface of the ceiling, as daylight, especially Sun rays, will quickly reveal all defects in the form of a shadow from small tubercles. There will be dark spots on the ceiling.
  2. Rust that has appeared over the years and old leaks must be primed with insulating compounds.
  3. The ceiling surface must be dry, sound and clean.
  4. You should not save on cheap and low-quality primers and paints - as a result, the cost of two layers of expensive materials will be less than five layers of cheaper ones.
  5. Start painting from the corners. Then the paint must be applied in the direction from the window deep into the room. The first layer is recommended to be applied along the window opening, and the second - perpendicular to the first. It must be remembered that the previous layer must be completely dry. Otherwise, it may start to flake off.
  6. It is better to perform work using bright artificial lighting. Instead of an ordinary light bulb, you can screw in an energy-saving cold glow. This will help you see how evenly the material is applied. Painted areas must be viewed from different angles of view, since the “gaps” in front of you are not always visible.
  7. "Streaking" when painting can occur for two reasons. First, because of the density of the material. In this case, it must be diluted according to the instructions on the package. Secondly, due to the uneven thickness of the ink layer. To avoid this problem, it is recommended to use a special paint trough. The roller is dipped in paint, and then rolled out along the “ribs”, removing excess.

Conclusion

The modern construction market offers all sorts of options for finishing ceilings. They can be tension or suspended, rack or glue, panel or tile. But the most popular were and remain painted surfaces.

Before the beginning finishing works everyone must decide for themselves which paint will be chosen for the ceiling, how long it should last, whether it is planned to wash the surface, or is it easier to re-paint the ceiling after a short period of time. There are no unequivocal answers - everything depends only on the desire of the owner and his material capabilities.

There are many design options for ceilings (stretch, suspended, etc.), but they all reduce the height of the room to one degree or another. Only one finishing material is free from this drawback: for the ceiling. Consider its varieties and features of use.

Advantages and disadvantages of the material

A water emulsion is a suspension of insoluble dye microdroplets in water. The composition does not contain organic solvents and other aggressive substances. Hence the ecological purity of the material and its suitability for work in the interior of living rooms.

Other advantages of water-based / water-based paint:

  • Fire safety;
  • explosion safety;
  • resistance to alkalis;
  • weak abrasion;
  • water resistance in the dried state;
  • durability;
  • vapor permeability, breathability;
  • lays down well, easy to apply;
  • white emulsion is easily tinted;
  • most species have good hiding power;
  • suitable for most surfaces;
  • price availability.

Water-based paint, as a rule, is not suitable for painting metal, varnished and adhesive surfaces. Color if necessary metal surface it must first be primed in two layers.

Other disadvantages include temperature sensitivity (at low temperatures, the coating may crack) and vulnerability to biological factors- fungi, bacteria. Some brands contain bactericidal and fungicidal additives.

Types of water-based paints

Water-dispersion paint and water-based paint can be of several types:

  • acrylic water-based paint;
  • silicate;
  • latex;
  • silicone;
  • water-based polyvinyl acetate paint.

How do they differ from each other, which one is better?

Acrylic

How is acrylic paint different from the rest? It is the most versatile of all, you can even paint metal (the latter - after priming). It has the highest water-repellent properties - a ceiling painted with acrylic can be washed with water, incl. with detergents. Can be painted in wet areas - showers, etc. Other differences:

  • resistance to ultraviolet (to fading);
  • resistance to fungal cultures;
  • to abrasion.

Latex

Latex water-based paint differs from analogues in a variety of textures: matte, semi-gloss, gloss of varying degrees. The degree of gloss is indicated in the marking (from completely matt to highly glossy):

  • CM 0–5;
  • M 6–10;
  • MP 11–29;
  • PG 30–59;
  • G 60–89;
  • SG 90–100.

Please note: a matte shade emphasizes the texture of the painted surface, while gloss, on the contrary, smooths it out.

Latex water emulsion is highly resistant to abrasion and alkali, water resistance. But it loses to some analogues in the temperature range. Recommended for use in warm rooms. Can be mixed with acrylic formulations (pure acrylic, acrylic silicone, acrylic polyvinyl acetate, acrylic butadiene styrene).

Silicone

Water-based silicone paint is made on the basis of silicone resins. Almost universal, suitable for painting any surface. Its differences from the rest:

  • good hiding power, cracks up to 2 mm wide can not be preliminarily puttied;
  • high water resistance, suitable for wet rooms;
  • slightly susceptible to fungal infections, does not absorb dirt;
  • minus - high price.

Polyvinyl acetate

The basis is a polyvinyl acetate emulsion (PVA glue is made on the same basis). Unplasticized - frost-resistant (up to 4 freeze / thaw cycles), plasticized can be stored and used only at positive temperatures. In addition to the emulsion, the composition includes stabilizers and pigments. GOST for manufacturing - 28196 89.

At +22° the paint dries for three hours, after drying a uniform porous semi-gloss film forms on the surface. When adding color, it is recommended to paint at least 2 layers. Suitable for painting wood, concrete, brick, plaster, drywall. Do not apply to metal, chalk/lime, alumina and vitriol surfaces.

One of the main advantages of the material is the most low price among water-dispersion compositions. But there are also disadvantages: in terms of abrasion resistance and water resistance, it loses to analogues.

Choice and calculation features

When choosing a paint, you should be guided by the properties of the room (humidity, air temperature), the reputation of the manufacturer (it is better to pay more, but be sure of the durability of the coating) and your own financial capabilities.

There are many brands of water emulsion for walls and ceilings on the market. The best among them are:

  • Dufa, gloss;
  • Caparol, silicone;
  • Dulux, matte;
  • Halo, washable;
  • Tikkurila, almost all types are produced under this brand;
  • Ceresit, silicate.

In the economy class, Tex, Snezhka, Expert are of good quality.

Paint consumption is indicated on the package. But it should be borne in mind that this figure is a minimum: for a perfectly flat surface and economical application. When calculating, take into account the number of layers and add a margin of 10-15%, since it is most likely impossible to purchase paint of the same shade. On a freshly painted surface, the difference may not be noticeable, but after drying it will appear.

The same with color: if you add it, then immediately to the entire volume and mix thoroughly. Otherwise, the ceiling will turn out to be spotty, with stains, visible borders.

Application technology

Before starting work, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned and leveled. Further actions depend on the type of paint. If it "breathes", you can paint on fresh plaster. If the air permeability is low (for example, with an acrylic emulsion), the plaster must first be dried, otherwise moisture will remain between the coating and the base and fungus will develop. In the future, this will lead to peeling of the paint.

The procedure for processing the ceiling:

  1. Prime. Instead of primer, you can use paint diluted with water 1/1.
  2. Paint over corners and hard-to-reach areas with a brush with a thin layer.
  3. Paint the rest of the area with a spray gun or roller in two layers. The second layer is placed across the first after it dries. It is recommended to lay the top coat in the direction of the light source, as it will better mask minor surface defects.

Conclusion

Painting the ceiling with water-based paint is a simple and clean job (compared to, for example, whitewashing). You can handle it on your own, without involvement professional craftsmen. What is required of you:

  • do not save when choosing a brand;
  • buy paint with a margin;
  • Read the instructions on the package carefully and follow them.

Then you will have a beautiful and neat ceiling, which will not have to be repainted soon.

Water-based paints are produced on a water basis, which determines its main qualities. Due to the mass of advantages and versatility, the paint quickly gained popularity among buyers. Suitable for painting not only walls, but also ceilings.

Advantages of water-based paints

Types of paints described

The properties of the water-based paint for the ceiling surface depend on the type, which, in turn, depends on the base.

Table 1. Varieties of water-based paints.

paint typeThe basisAdvantagesdisadvantages

Cement or slaked limeLow cost, suitable for any surface, including concrete or brickShort service life

An aqueous solution of silicate, known as office glueInexpensive, service life up to 20 yearsNot suitable for high humidity rooms
Acrylic polymer emulsionLong service life, strengthImpervious to steam and gases (this property can also be used as an advantage), high cost

Acrylic polymer with latex additionSame properties as acrylic water-based emulsions, also painted surfaces can be washedHigh cost, can crack in a cool room

Silicone resin emulsionCan be applied to any surface, hides irregularities up to 2 mm, vapor and gas permeable (this may be a disadvantage), suitable for any room, including kitchen and bathroom; the painted surface is washableThe most expensive of all water emulsions

All water-based paints are united by a water-dispersed base. The term "dispersion" itself means that water does not dissolve other substances, forming a single mixture, but dilutes the composition of the paint, penetrating between other particles. Thanks to various additives, manufacturers are trying to change some properties.

Silicone paints have practically no drawbacks. The only drawback may be vapor and gas permeability if reinforced concrete is painted. After a while, the metal will begin to rust, and rust spots will appear on the ceiling. Before painting reinforced concrete with silicone paint, the metal must be protected.

Reference! Today, silicone water-based emulsions with anti-corrosion additives have appeared on the market.

If the budget allows, choose a silicone emulsion. Otherwise, use it only in the toilet and bathroom. And remember: after drying, silicone paints give a glossy surface.

Silicate paints are inexpensive, but not suitable for the bathroom or kitchen. For such premises it is better to stay at acrylic paints. True, due to vapor and gas impermeability, they cannot be applied to fresh plaster until it is completely dry. Suitable paint for the ceiling in living rooms.

The ceiling, covered with acrylic water-based emulsion, can be washed, but infrequently and carefully. If latex is added to the paint, then the ceiling can be washed many times and even with a brush. The paint is ideal for painting the ceiling in the kitchen.

Characteristics of water-based paints according to GOST

According to GOST 19214-80, the water emulsion must have certain characteristics, which are given in the table below.

Decoding of GOST parameters

When choosing a water-based paint for the ceiling, professionals advise you to pay attention to the parameters below.

Note! If you decide to tint yourself, tint 10% more than the estimated paint consumption. The paint of the desired shade will remain in stock for the “light” painting (updating) of the ceiling in the future.

Razbel of the main color (proportions are shown on the example of VD-AK-115 color scheme from the manufacturer Syvelovskie paints - paint and varnish factory LLC)

The water emulsion is made on a water basis. One of the properties of water is freezing at zero degrees. The paint loses its properties after freezing, so do not buy it in unheated warehouses and markets.

Cost matters. The consumption of expensive paint is often lower than cheap paint. Savings in painting partially offset the high cost.

Ceiling preparation for painting

The preparation of the ceiling surface takes place in several stages.

Step 1. Surface cleaning. The ceiling may have previously been painted or whitewashed, so it needs to be cleaned. The whitewashed ceiling is moistened with water, applying it to the roller and rolling the surface with it. Then take a spatula and scrape old layer, after which the surface is washed again with a sponge.

To remove the old water emulsion, you should:

Often, cleaning from an old water-based coating comes down to simply scraping off damaged areas with a spatula.

Reference! Rust spots on reinforced concrete ceiling can be removed with a 5% solution of copper sulphate.

Step 2 Surface leveling. The ceiling is leveled with putty using a spatula. At the same time, all cracks, cracks, small depressions or recesses are hidden on the surface.

Step 3 Surface primer. The puttied surface must be primed, which prevents the high penetration of the paint, and the degree of hiding power will increase. It is recommended to choose a primer from the same manufacturer as the paint.

Coloring process

When the surface is ready for painting, you can proceed to the actual process.

To get started, check out these essential tools:

  • long pile roller for painting the main surface;
  • a bath where the paint roller will roll out;
  • brush for painting joints and seams;
  • thin brush for correction.

Important! If you do not roll the roller, the paint will be applied unevenly.

When painting, follow the rules of application. If there is one window in the room, then the first layer is applied parallel to it from one blank wall to another. The second layer is applied perpendicular to the first, in the direction from the window to opposite wall. If there are two windows in the room, then the layers are applied perpendicular to each other, and each time - from the window to the blank wall.

Important! It is better to apply two thin layers of paint than one thick one. Less consumption, paint lays down better.

You should start painting from the joints of the corner that is farthest from the entrance to the room. It is necessary to start painting the joints with a brush, a strip no more than 5 cm wide is painted over. Then the surface is rolled with a roller.

Note. For a water-based emulsion, a roller with a long pile is used, since the paint bubbles on the foam rubber, and the short pile will not capture enough paint.

Between the application of layers should take at least 8 hours for the paint to dry completely. The paint must dry vivo without the use of electrical appliances.

Each layer is applied quickly, as the freshly applied paint will stand out next to the already dried one.

You can paint the ceiling with water-based paint yourself. Observing simple rules you can achieve excellent results. Properly selected water emulsion for the ceiling will provide an aesthetic appearance surfaces, usability and durability.
