I didn’t see that people were very fond of curtains, perhaps the reason is that sewing curtains in Italy costs 1-2 thousand euros, so they don’t philosophize much, they just assemble the rags beautifully and throw them in random order on the curtains.

"Can't you be curious? how an old italian house is arranged?!” - I received such a request after one of my reports about Southern Italy. I remembered her when I was going to visit the house artist Jose Garcia Ortega, student and friend Pablo Picasso.
Ortega spent the last 10 years of his life in the neighborhood of the town where I spend my summers. Thus, the curiosity of readers intertwined with my interest in the Spanish artist, an image that is very reminiscent of that of Vladimir Vysotsky: resemblance, guitar and irrepressible desire for freedom.

For the tenth year on a rainy September evening (for some reason it always rains on this day) in the town of Bosco, an award in the field of culture and art is presented, dedicated to the artist José Ortega.

José Ortega, a painter and sculptor, devoted his work to topics that disturbed his soul and the heart of an ardent anti-fascist. Ortega joined the Spanish freedom fighters at the age of 15, spent several years in prison, after which he was forced to live in exile for the rest of his life.

In 1980, the artist bought a house in the small town of Bosco. I believe in the legend that the artist was attracted by the history of the town, which in the Cilento is called the City of Freedom, because were born here twice at the beginning of the 19th century popular uprisings against the Bourbons, after which the town was wiped off the face of the earth, and its inhabitants rebuilt it again.

So let's go to private house the artist's family, which opens to the public on the day of the award.

When you look at the house from the street, you immediately notice an element of movement in the architecture of the house, which is emphasized by extensions and superstructures that arose at different periods of the life of the house. This characteristic is shared by most ancient houses Cilento: As the family grows, so does the house.

We enter the house through the garden, i.e. through the kitchen, which for some reason I did not notice. My attention was immediately stolen by a magnificent sideboard with decorative plates that adorns the wall of the dining room.

Next to the dining room is a small cozy living room made of stone, with a fireplace decorated with handmade tiles.

I suspect that earlier the kitchen, dining room and fireplace were one room. At least, such a single and multifunctional is more typical for an old Italian house, which used to be heated by a single source - a fireplace.

The dining room and fireplace seem even smaller when you enter a huge hall with a large canvas on the central wall. This canvas is the last work that the artist began shortly before his death in 1990.

Aha! The Pieta sculpture, which adorns the staircase leading to the second floor, can tell a lot about the person who decided to place it in this place.

Definitely, Ortega was a believer, acutely perceiving human suffering. One can only guess how much the artist had to see and endure during his struggle against Francoism.

We rise to the second floor and ... take our breath away from the beauty of the seascape, which persistently breaks through open door to the terrace. Let's hurry there, for which the eye is hooked!

The opening view cynically hints that it was the beauty of the panorama of the Policastro sea bay that was the decisive motive for buying this house, and not at all the freedom-loving pages of local history.

It remains only to dream up how fabulous it is to watch the sunrise from this terrace.

When the afternoon sun burns to the fullest, it is better to close the shutters and stretch out on the sofa in a mandatory siesta in the Mediterranean.

Be sure to note the blue panel of majolica and coffee table in the form of a guitar made by the artist himself!

The rocking chair always serves as a symbol of people who know how to relax after the labors of the righteous.

Next comes the night zone. A very modest bedroom in blue tones that are not visible in the photo. But the shadow of the next visitor gloomily hints at the spirit of the artist guarding his family bed.)))

In the museum of the artist, which was opened in the town, you can read the phrase of José Ortega, dedicated to the inhabitants of the town:

« I feel good with you because I found here poverty and despair, the same as that of my people. Because the local colors are the same as those of my land. I stayed here because the skin of local laborers is as dry and dark as that of the Spanish peasants.

In a word, Cilento and its inhabitants have found their place in the heart of the artist. And for any inhabitant of this area, the name Cilento is equivalent to the meaning of the word "home"))))

The artist expressed his spiritual kinship with the freedom-loving inhabitants in a gift to the city - a majolica panel in the murales style "El pintor de la manca".
