WOOD PROTECTION METHODS

To protect wooden structures from biological damage, constructive measures and chemical methods are used.
The main source of moisture in wooden structures is moisture condensation, therefore, constructive measures are aimed at eliminating moisture in wooden structures during the operation of buildings. Chemical measures to protect against wood decay and damage by wood-destroying insects - antiseptic and canning.

Wood preservative- surface application of chemicals on wood, with a toxic effect, detrimental to biological destroyers.
Antiseptics are produced various methods: applying antiseptic solutions with brushes, hydraulic consoles, soaking or short-term immersion of wooden parts in solutions (with and without heating).

Wood preservatives can be carried out at construction sites. To protect the wood, a thin protective layer is applied to its surface. The retention of protective agents depends, on the one hand, on the viscosity and surface activity of the impregnating liquid, and on the other hand, on the density, humidity and surface roughness of the wood itself.
Impregnation is carried out with the help of hydraulic panels, sprayers and spray guns of various systems. Brushes are used in hard-to-reach places.

Another chemical treatment method: dipping or soaking. Under the conditions of construction sites, wood is deeply impregnated in cold or hot aqueous solutions of antiseptics. For impregnation, metal baths with anti-float devices and a lid are used. Sometimes metal baths are replaced with wooden ones with walls and a bottom protected by a waterproof film material. Soaking is especially recommended if there is a risk of hygroscopic moisture during operation.

canning

This method is carried out in the factory. During preservation, chemical preparations with a toxic effect, designed for biological destroyers, are introduced into the deep layers of wood.

Domestic factories use the following impregnation methods: autoclave under pressure above atmospheric; warming up - cold bath; application to the surface; autoclave-diffusion; combined drying-impregnation.

One of the most important tasks that builders have been solving for many centuries - fire protection of wood.
At the stage of construction or repair of wooden structures, constructive measures are used to protect wood from fire. For this wooden structures removed from sources of fire or protected from its direct impact.
Another way to solve this problem is to apply flame retardants to the wood surface - substances or mixtures that protect wood, fabrics and other materials of organic origin from ignition and self-burning. To do this, wood is coated with fire-retardant paints, varnishes and coatings or impregnated aqueous solutions fire retardant salts.
As a rule, work on fire protection and bioprotection of wood is carried out simultaneously. Fire-retardant materials often contain antiseptics. The impregnating composition is applied to wooden elements with brushes, dipping or spraying.

Impregnation of wooden structural elements consists in triple treatment with a fire retardant solution with a temperature of 10-15°C or a double treatment at a solution temperature of 50-60°C (with a break between treatments of at least 6 hours). Impregnation is carried out at positive air temperature.

Wooden structural elements should not be impregnated if they were previously coated with other impregnation or various paints (oil and silicate).
After impregnation, the parts should not be subjected to additional machining, as this removes the fire-retardant layer.
Minimum consumption of fire retardant solutions per 1 liter:
- with a two-time processing of the structure with a heated solution - 500 g / m 2;
- with a three-time treatment with a cold solution - 550-600 g / m 2;
- when impregnated by immersion - 600 g/m 2 .

Classification of protective equipment

1. By the nature of the action: antiseptics, flame retardants, protective equipment combined action.
2. By solubility: water-soluble - BP; soluble in light organic solvents - L; soluble in oils and heavy petroleum products, oils - M.
3. By washability: easily washable - LV; washed out -B; difficult to wash out - TV; indelible - HB.

Pinotex for wood is in demand by every owner of a wooden house. The name Pinotex has long become a household name, like a student asking to “photocopy” an essay, an unlucky consumer in the construction market asks to sell him Pinotex, pointing to obviously counterfeit products. Penotex was developed to protect the most ancient building material. We dare to assume that it was wood that became the first building material from which the man's house was built.

Wood is a natural product with excellent heat and sound insulation performance. Wooden houses have been standing for centuries, and are not afraid of Siberian frosts. Remarkable properties. able to make the house "breathe" without resorting to vapor barrier films, which favorably affects the formation of a comfortable microclimate in the house.

However, when erecting, wanting to extend the life of the building, the prudent owner thinks about how best to protect his home from:

The appearance of mold;
reproduction of mold microorganisms and fungi;
the beginning of putrefactive processes;
the spread of blue on light wood;
from atmospheric dampness.

It is no secret that wood is vulnerable and unable to effectively withstand the negative effects of the environment. It’s good that there is Penotex, you say, it perfectly copes with the primary task of protecting wooden structures from the adverse effects of atmospheric phenomena, resists harmful bacteria and repels insects. Pinotex prevents the ingress of moisture from the surface deep into the wood, acts as a barrier against rotting, blue wood.

The main protection that helps to avoid problems with wooden structures for a long time remains ordinary paint. paints and varnishes(LKM) are designed to increase the resistance of wood to the negative effects of atmospheric phenomena.

This is what it looks like wooden house processed Pinotex

The disadvantage of ordinary paint remains: the lack of penetration into the structure of the tree, protecting only the surface, in addition, the paint peels off and completely hides the authenticity of the pattern of wood structures. Modern LKM Pinotex, is able to organize the protection of wooden buildings, while maintaining natural properties. Pinotex found wide application in individual construction and in the industrial complex.

The choice of Pinotex is not accidental.

Since 1959, the Danish company Sadolin&Holmblad has accumulated a unique store of knowledge on wood protection measures. The history of Pinotex, a durable wood protection product, dates back to the development of the 50s of the last century and does not end to this day. The raw material base of the product components is alkyd resin and white spirit. Iron oxide is used to achieve the required consistency for the pigmentation of the coating.

Since the beginning of the 60s, in the European countries of Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Finland, there has been a rapid increase in requests for environmentally friendly buildings made of wooden elements. Consistently, in accordance with the needs of the owners, Sadolin & Holmblad developed a series of products capable of protecting wood and not distorting the appearance of the house.

Products have been developed in the following areas:

  • Antiseptic - a means that prevents the occurrence of putrefactive bacteria and prevents the decomposition of wood.
  • Flame retardant - an additive of organic origin, is added in order to give fire protection properties to wooden structures.
  • Lacquer coatings.

The result of the activity was not long in coming, and in the mid-70s, European consumers recognized Pinotex products as the most effective and reliable means that meet the requirements of environmental safety. Flattering reviews about Pinotex were passed from mouth to mouth, and even without the Internet, reviews contributed to winning leading positions in the market. At the beginning of the Pinotex paint journey, it was produced in limited colors, offering the consumer a traditional palette of colors:

  • colorless varnish;
  • ebony;
  • walnut coloring;
  • shades of teak wood;
  • classic pine color scheme.

Nowadays, a palette of colors can lead to a hypnotic state, even a sophisticated designer. There are more than a dozen basic color solutions, and shades expand the gamut to forty semitones of each color.

Pinotex classification

Pinotex coatings are used at every stage of processing wooden structures: from impregnation at the beginning of installation to finishing. The release of inexpensive Pinotex paints involves universal use for outdoor and indoor use. More progressive paints, specializing in separate application of external or internal coating. The price for a can of Pinotex special paint is a little more expensive.

Most often, an antiseptic is used during the processing of hidden wooden structures to be further covered with finishing materials.

It is forbidden to use an antiseptic in structures that are under open solar radiation, since ultravioletdestroys protective properties biocides.

The uniform application of the antiseptic on the surface is facilitated by a unique green indicator from the developers. Quick application (dipping allowed), no streak splashing, and lack of harsh odor is favored by craftsmen. Pinotex Impra perfectly "works out" in a humid climate.

Application: floor joists, rafters, roof battens and other internal structures. It is necessary to cover the elements of antiseptics twice with drying the layer for at least 2 hours. The antiseptic Pinotex is diluted with water and has green color. After final drying, additional processing of elements is not required.

How to prepare a wood surface before painting

Step 1. Cleaning the surface

Impregnations do not “treat” wood, they protect. This is the basic rule. That is why, before painting, you need to make sure the quality of the “healthy” material. In case of damage to wooden building materials by a fungus, it is better to replace them, in extreme cases, subject them to serious cleaning from biodefeat. The damaged surface will have to be cleaned to a healthy layer. In places where there are knots, it is better to walk with an antiseptic and varnish first.

A clean and healthy wooden surface is sanded with a fine sandpaper until the pile is removed and cleaned of dust. Previously treated wood will have to be freed from the previous paintwork to a clean coat. further also, the surface is sanded and cleaned of dust. Cleaning happens:

Physical - with a scraper, a hard iron brush, a sandblasting device;
thermal - with hot air using a building hair dryer;
chemical - industrial means for removing paintwork.

Step 2. Surface priming

Rule number two - do you want long lasting coverage? Do not skimp on applying a primer coat. The primer forms the initial moisture insulation. Penetrating deep into, it fights for each woody layer, preventing fungal formations and blue bloom. In addition, the task is to increase the adhesion (adhesion) of finishing paints to the product, prolonging their durability.

Pinotex Base is an important part of the concept of protection, it goes well with fine paints. Evenly distributing, the primer is abundantly spread over the product, paying special attention to the sawn ends of the material. The final stage of painting begins no earlier than after the daily drying of the primed surface.

Step 3. Coloring

After making sure that the final drying of the primer composition, you can start applying the final color. The best effect is achieved when painting with 2-3 layers of finishing. Each subsequent color adds depth to the color, and makes the protection more stable and reliable.

Painting should be carried out continuously, spreading the paint with a brush or roller along the wood fibers. The final color shade of the paint can only be assessed after complete drying. Color may vary due to:

  • tree type,
  • level of preparation and cleaning,
  • application method,
  • number of coats of paint.

The painting process must be carried out at positive temperatures from +5 ... + 30 ° С, the best climate zone lies within +18±2°С. Pinotex paints are already on sale in finished version use and do not require breeding. The final drying of the cover film depends on the humidity, but after 48 hours it should in any case acquire the desired appearance.

Universal Mixes

They are used selectively, as they “work” in the same way in any conditions. Approved by independent experts for food, medical, children's, educational institutions. They have a low content of harmful volatile substances (VOCs).

Prepared on a water basis. They block UV rays, have increased atmospheric wear resistance, and are safe indoors.

Application technology

The beneficial effect is calculated on the processing of fresh wood. On previously painted objects, deep penetration is blocked - protective and decorative properties are declining. Pinotex is used on any properly prepared wood.

It is impossible to restore a tree damaged by mold with Pinotex. Mixtures on a surface covered with drying oil are ineffective. It makes no sense to paint rotten or bug-eaten areas.

Step 1. Preparation

The preparation process will reduce consumption and improve the quality of painting:

  1. New wood should not have areas with bio damage, greasy spots. Permissible humidity - 20%. If there is a place with a fungus, clean the sore spots to healthy fibers. Remove grease with a solvent.

  1. Conifers are cleaned of resinous deposits: they are scraped out with a knife or a metal brush, then the places of resin are washed with turpentine / white spirit and polished with sandpaper.
  2. Previously treated wood is cleaned of the old coating. Applies chemical wash, grinder with abrasive nozzles, brush. When using a wash, it warms up with a building hair dryer or dries in the air.

  1. Drying oil is washed off with dishwashing detergent / any soapy solution.
  2. It is recommended to cover the heads of non-galvanized nails with metal primer, as they will give rusty smudges in the rain.
  3. Blue/grayness on the board must be bleached with special solutions: Oxide, Ecosept, Neomid-500, Senezh. Apply with a brush for 2-10 hours, then rinse, dry.

Step 2. Priming

A colorless primer Pinotex Base is used. Apply with a brush in one layer. The ends are carefully painted over - until complete impregnation / saturation. The second layer is created after 24 hours.

Step 3. Coloring

Allow 24 hours between primer and top coat. The paint is carefully moved, the brush is wetted to half the pile, the movements should be along the fibers. It is advisable to paint in two layers.

Uniformity of a covering is reached by means of a dry brush. 10-15 minutes after applying the mixture, walk over the surface with a brush.

It is desirable to carry out work at a temperature of +18 ... +20 ° C in a shady place, on a calm, dry day.

Impregnation for wood contains active substances to protect the latter from mold and blue. Suitable for painting, first of all, sawn, as well as planed wooden surfaces. Not suitable for finishing fungus-infested or pest-infested wood.

When painting, Pinotex adheres well to the surface of the wood.
- The product emphasizes the beautiful structure of wood
- Helps prevent fungal diseases and pests in the wood
- Used both in the system and as a separate product (without soil)

The surface to be treated must be clean, of high quality and free of fungal damage (rot fungus, mold and blue stain). At all stages of processing, the wood must be dry, with a moisture content of less than 20%.
Depending on the type of contamination (dust, soot, mold, organic formations), select the appropriate surface cleaning method. Avoid using cleaning methods that could damage the wood.
To ensure better adhesion, remove from the surface mechanically with a brush with hard bristles or by washing a layer of wood preservative, as well as a slightly destroyed or grayed layer of wood.
available on the surface old paint(e.g. oil, alkyd or latex) completely remove either mechanically (scraper, stiff brush), thermally (hot air, infrared radiation), or chemically (paint remover). This ensures a uniform color when the surface is subsequently treated with a wood preservative.
When fixing wood flooring, galvanized nails and staples are preferred. When using non-pretreated metal parts, they must be separately protected against rust before the final repainting of the wooden surface.
Make sure that the wood paneling is well ventilated, the roof and drainage system are in order and the drainage works without interruption.

Internal and exterior finish buildings using wood has become very popular. This material has an attractive appearance, is natural, safe, has excellent thermal insulation characteristics. But in order for all external data and its properties to be preserved for many years, you need to take care of this in advance and provide it with the necessary protection.

To do this, you can use paints for wood, which are now available in large assortment. Many of them are able not only to preserve the former appearance of wooden materials, but also to provide them reliable protection from the effects of biological pests. These are Pinotex and Aquatex, many are lost when choosing a paint between these two compositions. So which drug is the best?

Pinotex is intended to ensure proper protection of wood from the adverse effects of atmospheric conditions and microorganisms dangerous to it. And also for obtaining a finishing decorative coating on a wooden material. Pinotex paints are produced by an Estonian manufacturer. Paints of this trademark mainly for outdoor use, but also for painting wooden materials indoors.

Pinotex paint has high elasticity, it does not crack from air temperature changes and movement (breathing) of wooden material. The composition of the paints includes fungicides that prevent contamination of wood with biological agents, as well as protect against the invasion of pests. Pinotex provides wooden material with moisture resistance, moisture can lead to its deterioration and rotting processes. With the help of Pinotex paint, you can improve the appearance of a wooden material while not changing or hiding its structure. These compositions are produced in 10 shades, which are allowed to be mixed. Also, if desired, you can tint the paint in 30 colors using special pastes.

The composition of Pinotex paints is easy to apply. But you need to work only with cleaned wooden surfaces. They should not have an old paint coating, resins, mold, fungi. It is desirable for efficiency and reliability to pre-prime the wooden material carefully. The composition should be applied with a brush along the wood fibers. Before use, Pinotex paint must be diluted, it is enough to mix it well.

Photo: Aquatex extra wood paint is considered to be of better quality than just Aquatex (without the extra prefix). Aquatex paints are made on an alkyd basis. Their manufacturer is Russian company Rogned. These funds gained popularity in the construction market among buyers due to their qualitative composition. They include alkyd resins, antiseptic additives, pigments and organic solvents. The very composition of paints is complex and includes a large number of components. They are suitable for processing wood of any kind indoors and outdoors.

Aquatex paints create a protective film that does not change the texture of the wood material. The antiseptic substances included in their composition prevent the formation of mold, fungi and insects on the surface of the wood. Also, Aquatex products protect wooden material from the adverse effects of sunlight. The coating obtained after painting is vapor-permeable, it does not prevent the wood from breathing. Paints are able to protect wooden material from moisture and fading, prevent cracking and decay. Aquatex paints are available in 15 shades, which can be mixed if necessary.

The coloring of wooden material with Aquatex paints is of high quality. Apply this composition to clean and moderately damp wood (moisture percentage should not exceed 40%). All dirt and previous coatings of varnish or paint must be removed. The paint does not spread and can be applied with a roller or brush. The composition of Aquatex does not need to be diluted, it is sold already in a form ready for use. It is recommended to paint wooden material in several layers to get a rich and uniform shade. The resulting coating does not fade and can last in excellent condition for at least 5 years.

Pinotex and Aquatex: which composition is better

It is difficult to say which paint composition among Aquatex or Pinotex is better. The advantage of Aquatex paints is their domestic production, hence their low cost. Pinotex has good quality characteristics. But it is produced by a foreign manufacturer, which affects its price. But Aquatex also has a drawback, it contains organic solvents that spoil environmental characteristics material. Although the manufacturers claim that their paints are not capable of harming human health, they should not be used in residential areas, in rooms such as bedrooms, nurseries, etc.
