Where can you get homeschooling? Homeschooling - what is it?

Some children know about school life only through the stories of friends and acquaintances. These are children who study at home, and they are also considered schoolchildren, however, they do not study at a school desk under the guidance of a teacher, but at a home desk under the guidance of parents or tutors. And only parents decide whether the child needs to be transferred to this type of education.

When is it necessary to transfer to home schooling?

Sometimes it is more correct not to force the child to go to school every day, but to transfer him to home schooling. Here are five main reasons why you should really do it:

1. If the child is far ahead of peers in mental development. For example, he studied the entire school curriculum and he is not interested in sitting in class, he is distracted, interferes with others, so the child may completely lose interest in learning at all. There is an option - to jump over a year or two to study with older guys, but then the child will lag behind in physical, mental and social development.

2. The child has a serious hobby, for example, professionally goes in for sports, music or drawing. It is difficult to combine such a hobby with schoolwork.

3. If your work or the work of your husband is connected with constant moving, when the child has to constantly change schools. This hurts him a lot. Difficulties with academic performance may arise, and it is psychologically difficult to get used to new teachers, classmates, and new surroundings.

4. You do not want to send your child to a regular public school for ideological or religious reasons.

5. The child has serious health problems (schooling at home, then teachers come to the child themselves).

How to get homeschooled

In order to transfer a child to homeschooling, a few documents are required: an application for the transition to homeschooling, a birth certificate or a child's passport, and medical certificates if the reason for the transfer is the child's health.

The first thing you need to do is to find out if the charter of the school you have chosen, to which you will be attached, has a clause on homeschooling, otherwise the school will refuse you. Then you can apply to another school or immediately to the department of education of the local administration, they should have a list of those schools in which homeschooling is provided.

If you yourself want to arrange homeschooling, then only an application and documents for the child will be enough, and if the child switches to homeschooling for health reasons, then you need to contact the local doctor to give him a referral to the psychological, medical and pedagogical council, on which it will be decided whether the child needs to switch to home schooling, and will issue a certificate that is valid for a year.

An application for the transition to home schooling must be written in the name of the principal, but it is possible that he does not want to take responsibility, then he will send an application to the department of education. Or you can immediately write a statement to the administration.

The application must indicate which subjects and how many hours the child will study. On this issue, you can consult with the teachers of the school.

The schedule of training must be agreed with the school administration. You can both teach the child yourself and hire repeaters, teachers from the school can come in certain subjects (this is already by your agreement). For some subjects, the child can come to school to the teachers, but when the lessons are over, and again, if you agree.

After everything is completed, you should be given a journal where you will mark the topics that have been covered with the child and rate him.

As soon as the child is transferred to home schooling, an agreement is concluded that spells out the rights and obligations between the school, parents and the child, as well as the terms of certification.

How is homeschooling

With home schooling, the child receives all the knowledge either from tutors hired by the parents, or the parents themselves teach, or the child independently studies subjects, for example, those that he likes the most.

The child comes to school only for intermediate and final certification. If the child studies according to the program of the school itself, then his own assessment will coincide with the assessment that takes place at the school. And if the child is studying on an accelerated program, then initially the parents and the school administration will draw up a schedule for the delivery of final works on individual plan child. Typically, certification takes place every six months. The child has two attempts to pass it, but if he fails, then most likely he will return to study at a regular school.

The school, in theory, should provide you and your child with textbooks and other methodological literature.

And the state, for its part, pays the parents funds for the education of the child - about 500 rubles a month. But in some regions it is higher due to the compensation of the local administration.

Advantages and disadvantages of home schooling

There is a lot of debate about the benefits of homeschooling, and each side has its own arguments. To virtues Homeschooling can include:

  • The ability to regulate the pace of learning yourself: stretch or go through the program of several classes in one year.
  • The child learns to rely only on his knowledge and strength.
  • The child can study subjects of interest to him in more depth.
  • You yourself can adjust the school curriculum, taking into account its shortcomings.

To shortcomings also include the following:

  • The child does not socialize, does not learn to communicate and work in a team.
  • He has no experience of speaking in public, defending his opinion in front of his peers.
  • Not all parents can effectively organize the education of children at home.
  • In the future, the child may have difficulty adapting to studying at the university and finding a job.

The concept of homeschooling (translated from English, “homeschooling”, has become increasingly popular lately. In order to understand what it is, I suggest first turning to Wikipedia:

"The term homeschooling refers to the education of children at home, usually by parents, although it is possible to involve other teachers, as opposed to teaching children in public or private schools."

At the same time, the concept is not limited only to the fact that children study at home. Homeschooling has several types:

Unschooling- this is teaching children without a pre-thought-out and clearly scheduled program. Also, unschooling does not have predetermined goals and objectives. But at the same time, the method does not mean that children are not taught anything. This is a method that assumes the absence of a pre-planned training program.

The term unschooling was coined in 1977 by John Holt in Growing Up Without School. Holt talked about how children learn best from experience in accordance with their interests. He suggested that parents give up artificial learning conditions, and use real life. John Holt criticized the school system and wrote that compulsory schooling was harmful to the health and psyche of children. As a result, he proposed to get rid of schools and systematic education in general. Adherents of the theory consider such training to be natural, starting from the needs of the child himself.

What are the types of homeschooling?

Family Learning

Parents enter into an agreement with the school, which specifies the forms and terms of certification, the timing of practical and laboratory work. The child can go to classes that he likes.

external student

The child independently studies the school curriculum at a pace convenient for him and then passes intermediate exams. You can study two years of the school curriculum in six months.

Home education

Homeschooling can be arranged if you have a medical recommendation. Then school teachers come home and conduct classes - from 8 to 12 hours a week, depending on the age of the child.

Nonschooling- here the child is really not specifically taught anything, nothing is forbidden to him. Everything that he wants to do himself is seen as a natural need to acquire new knowledge.

Homeschooling advantages and disadvantages

Homeschoolers Arguments

- School discourages a person's natural desire for knowledge (curiosity), replacing it with discipline and the desire to get good grades.

“Normal socialization does not take place in the school, because the school community is not built the way a normal community is built. Socialization is replaced by "social Darwinism" ("survival of the fittest") or the discipline of teachers. Also, schoolchildren cannot dose the amount of communication, as they are constantly in the company of other children.

- Constant compulsion to study discourages not only the desire, but also the ability to study independently, set tasks for yourself and solve them, even if you want to do it.

- The school unifies children, smoothes individuality.

- The school limits the child's cognitive interest in the situation "here and now", replacing it with the need to follow the school curriculum.

Criticism of homeschooling

- Without school, children do not socialize, do not learn to communicate and work in a team.

- Without school, children will not receive systematic fundamental knowledge, they will not learn to think. The school still teaches to think.

Not all parents can stay at home with their children. And not all parents can effectively organize the education of their children outside of school.

– In the future, it may be difficult to adapt to study at the university and find a job

Marina Ozerova, Head of the remote family center, educational psychologist, Israel

I choose home education primarily because I want to provide a child with an individual approach to learning. I want freedom of choice - what and how to teach, when and how much. And, most importantly, that education should not be divorced from practical activities and the active life of the family.
The degree of sociability (which is often confused with socialization) does not depend on home schooling, but on the character and temperament of the person. In addition to home (or school education), the ability to be in society depends on many factors.

Most recently, I read data from a National Center for Education Statistics study of home and family education. It turns out that in each country about 5-10% of the total number of children attend this type of education. For example, in Russia every year there are up to 100 thousand children who receive home education. The numbers surprised me and even shocked me a little!

Why do parents prefer this form of education?

What are the disadvantages and advantages compared to public education?

What is the difference between home and family education?

I will try to fully answer these and many other questions, providing parents with maximum information for reflection.

Why do parents not want to send their child to a public school?

There can be quite a few reasons:

  • some mothers and fathers believe that the school does not provide enough quality and in-depth education
  • there are a number of parents who believe that the workload at school is quite serious and has a bad effect on the physical and psychological state of the child
  • intimidation, initiation into bad habits: smoking, drugs, alcohol, as well as division into a social level by peers
  • the desire of parents to establish their own curriculum.
  • classes are overcrowded, so the teacher is not able to give each student the appropriate attention
  • parents wanted and want to spend as much time as possible with their child
  • the family lives quite far from the school, and getting to it is very problematic.
  • parents had a bad school experience.

Perhaps there are dozens of other reasons, but I have highlighted the main ones that are often encountered.

Why do children not want to go to school?

Now let's answer the question of worried parents: "Why does the son or daughter not want to go to school?" You understand that children are different and there can be quite a lot of reasons. I will bring to your attention the most relevant, which psychologists have identified:

  • in the schools of our country, due attention is not paid to each student, there is no individual approach depending on his mental and physical abilities. As a rule, the general education system is designed for the average student. Therefore, in practice, it has been observed that children with high intellectual abilities do not develop their gift, they are sad, lazy and descend to the level of an average schoolchild. But a child with weak mental abilities does not feel comfortable, he has complexes when he is called to the board, he is afraid of ridicule, answering to the whole class. Therefore, the parents of both children understand the needs of their child and transfer them to home or family education. Thus, geeks develop their abilities and do not get bored from a lack of information, while the weak ones follow a simplified program and do not build up inferiority complexes in themselves.
  • the attitude of the child to school in most cases depends on the first teacher. Agree that not everyone is lucky with the first teacher! For example, my daughter is very lucky. My baby went to school with pleasure, absorbed every word that Lydia Alexandrovna said. And not only she! The director, parents and children were delighted with her teaching method, her ability to present information in an interesting, professional and intelligible way. It was also important that she was patient, fair, attentive to each child, never raised her voice and did not single out anyone, writing down as favorites. That is why the whole class, being in the 8th grade, has remained in full force, has a fairly high academic score and now confirms its knowledge in all subjects with different teachers. But I don’t even want to remember the first despotic teacher! Although I studied well, I was afraid to go to school and did not want to. Her cry and constant dissatisfaction with all the children stood in my ears! I will not judge, but just say that my class breathed a sigh of relief when, for family reasons, she moved to another city.
  • complex curriculum. Many parents and teachers, with horror, understand: what an unbearable burden falls on the shoulders of students! When attending school, he sits out for 5-8 intense lessons, getting acquainted with the topic of a particular subject, and then, when he comes home, he thoroughly studies the material and does a huge amount of homework. The child is emotionally and physically tired, cannot withstand such loads, gets sick and refuses to go to school. Seeing the condition of the child, some parents decide to switch to home or family education.
  • disabled child. Unfortunately, there are children who cannot attend school for health reasons. And there are dozens or even hundreds of thousands of such children in each country. For them, a special program of home schooling and obtaining a certificate of secondary education is provided.

What are the types of homeschooling?

Having dealt with the reasons for studying at home, let's talk about: what it can be, consider its priorities and disadvantages.

There are six forms of home education:

  1. Unschooling, which in translation from English means "without a school." Believe it or not, this is a complete rejection not only of the school, but of the school curriculum as a whole. It is not difficult to guess that unschooling is a very risky decision of parents in relation to the future of the baby. Confident in their pedagogical and mental abilities, parents believe that they themselves will be able to teach the child everything they need, in a peculiar form they will master all the sciences that they will need in life and when they enter a higher educational institution. Basically, this turns out to be a fatal error! That is why unschooling is banned in many countries, including Russia and Ukraine.
  2. Home schooling- this is a close relationship with the school curriculum and teachers. For this form of education, a medical certificate is issued, indicating forced home schooling. As a result, school teachers individual sessions with a child at home, without deviating from the secondary education program: with writing independent, control works and passing exams.
  3. Homeschooling with Partial School Attendance. This type of training is provided only due to medical indications approved by a special medical commission. These may be children with special needs who are only allowed to attend a few lessons per day.
  4. Family Learning significantly differs from the home one in that the lessons are conducted by the parents or relatives themselves, independently choosing the lesson schedule, materials and their volumes. You say that this is unschooling! No, I dare you to object! Being in family education, the kid is assigned to school, every year he passes certification, passes exams, and also prerequisite is the passing of an independent examination assessment. Upon graduation, the child receives the same certificate as the students attending the educational institution.
  5. external student issued by agreement with the school administration. With the help of relatives, the child learns the basics of science at home, and then passes tests and exams without coming to school.
  6. remote method- this is training by teachers via the Internet through the Skype program or forums. Homework and control robots are performed online. The distance learning method is agreed and approved by the school administration due to the reasonable circumstances of the student.

We evaluate the pros and cons of homeschooling.

Let's dwell on the positive and negative sides of home-based education.

Positive sides:

  • children receive education at a convenient time for them and taking into account the wishes
  • the fact of violence by teachers and peers is excluded
  • no need to follow school rules and absurd rituals.
  • there is an opportunity for parents to completely control the child, to engage in his moral, religious and ethical education.
  • a great opportunity to live according to your biological clock. This is a great opportunity to get enough sleep, if necessary, stop or cancel classes during illness, etc.
  • engage in the study of special sciences or rare languages.
  • the risk of acute respiratory infections, acute respiratory viral infections, injuries, infectious diseases is reduced, and problems with posture and visual impairment are practically eliminated.
  • there is a constant contact of the child with his parents, as a result, a bad or any other influence on the growing personality is excluded.
  • have a unique opportunity to school course training in less than ten years.

Negative sides:

  • no experience with teamwork
  • the need for constant employment of parents with the education of the child, control over the educational process.
  • there is no clear work schedule and strict discipline, which stimulates the speed of completing educational tasks.
  • no experience in resolving conflict situations among classmates and high school students
  • parents will not be able to professionally and fully teach all school subjects without exception. No matter how talented they are.
  • overprotection will lead to selfishness of the child
  • the baby will grow up like a houseplant - without worldly experience
  • the imposition by parents of their point of view on the child is detrimental and leads to a complete absence of their opinion
  • the baby feels that he is not like everyone else and tries on the image of a “white crow”.

Like this! So, dear parents, decide where and how your child should be educated! I wish you to do right choice!

7 ways to instill in children a love of reading!

Increasingly, parents, trying to individualize the educational process of their children, are turning to the concept of “home schooling”. This is especially true for elementary school, when a child may be mentally and physically unprepared for a simultaneous change in lifestyle, high-quality assimilation of the flow of new information, the need for socialization and active competition among peers.

Some parents are still thinking possible consequences taking on the role of educators, while others are already actively involved in the work, making plans for the next year.

Homeschooling - what is it?

It is no secret that a ten-year school program can be studied much faster with an individual approach to the educational process. Realizing this, parents choose homeschooling as a real opportunity to help their children save time and acquire broader and more useful knowledge in the modern world. Mastering standard subjects, the child simultaneously masters additional skills of an alternative orientation, gradually forming into a versatile personality.

Home training of a temporary or permanent nature is caused by a need: medical contraindications for a child to attend school. In this case, the student is officially assigned to an educational institution, and it bears full responsibility for his knowledge and successful certification.

But “family education” is just a synonym for homeschooling, providing for the detachment of the child from school and the imposition of responsibility for his preparation entirely on the parents. An educational institution can be only one of the parties to the contract in the case of certification - intermediate or final.

Legal norms for the preparation of students in full-time and part-time form

In 2012, the "Law on Education" was issued. Its essence is that children can now receive education in an organized manner: in and out of schools. Education in schools is divided into full-time, part-time (externship system) and part-time (at home, home). The training of students outside the educational institution is defined by the terms "family education" and "self-education", with the meaning adequately invested in them.

A child, for medical reasons, has the right to individually developed parameters for teaching him subjects, in accordance with Article 34 of the Federal Law "On Education".

Homeschooling is provided by law in the following cases:

  • the need for long-term treatment;
  • disability;
  • surgery and subsequent long-term rehabilitation;
  • neuropsychiatric disorders (epilepsy, neurosis, schizophrenia).

For sick children, both conditions for learning at home and easing the requirements for attending school can be created: additional days off, exemption from lessons.

The number of load hours is determined by special standards depending on the class (usually from 8 to 12 lessons per week).

The law also provides:

  • conclusion of a contract between parents and an educational institution;
  • providing the child with the necessary equipment for the remote format of obtaining knowledge;

  • rules for accepting a child handicapped to school;
  • change of educational institution;
  • standards of attestation and issuance of documents on education.

Getting ready for individual program, children master subjects in accordance with the school plan, as well as write control, independent, creative work, pass intermediate tests.

In order to transfer their child to home schooling, parents provide the school with an application and a certificate issued by the medical board, on the basis of which the directorate issues an order and draws up a lesson schedule.

Preparation of sick children

In accordance with the diagnosis, teachers develop work programs for home education in all subjects.

Training according to such a system can take place both personally, through a teacher's visit to the child, and remotely.

Programs take into account:

  • achievement by the end of the process of certain tasks;
  • number of hours for each topic;
  • forms of knowledge control.

The main attention in the development of individual schemes for the preparation of sick children is given to the following areas:

  • the ability to express one's own thoughts;
  • mastering the terminology of a particular subject;
  • memory training;
  • stimulation of creative thinking.

An important role is played by the educational process: the development of willpower, sociability, responsibility, understanding the significance of the discipline being studied.

Family education: points of the law

Home education in Russia is also implemented as a form of obtaining knowledge outside of school.

Parents are required to notify local authorities and the directorate of the educational institution in writing that they take full responsibility for the further education of their children. To pass the intermediate and final certification, a contract is also concluded with the school on external studies. With these necessary procedures, the process of family education begins.

The presence of overdue academic debts is unacceptable. This may be a precedent for transferring to a full-time education system in a school without the possibility of choosing the method of training in the future.

The "Law on Education" regulates the legal norms of family education in the following articles:

  • Article 17 - about the types of educational process.
  • Article 33 - on the system of external studies.
  • Article 44 is about the rights of parents and children.
  • Article 58 - about unsuccessful attestation and its consequences.
  • Article 63 - on the need to notify self-government bodies.

There is also a letter from the Ministry of Education explaining how to switch to homeschooling. Homeschooling in Russia, therefore, is regulated by legislative acts and fully implements the democratic rights and freedoms of citizens.

Why do parents decide to teach their children on their own?

The preparation of children outside of school is a serious step for the family and requires an understanding of the whole range of problems that may accompany the education process.

Reasons for choosing homeschooling:

  • ideological - unwillingness to raise a child within the framework of common system;
  • religious;
  • overload of the child in sports, music, art schools, caused by the main hobby and the planned future career;
  • psychological unpreparedness of the baby for adaptation in a large team;
  • the desire of parents to protect the child from the harmful effects of the school (stress, bad companies);
  • the opportunity to study far beyond the boundaries of civilization - in remote family estates, so popular in recent times;

  • the child can move with their parents to their places of work in different parts of the world;
  • family dissatisfaction with the quality of school education.

The advantages of homeschooling children completely depend on the reasons for the transition to it.

But the disadvantages include the responsibility placed on the family not only for the educational process of the child, but also for his subsequent adaptation in society, a possible lack of communication with peers and a lack of experience in building relationships with a system that exists outside the family world. The cost of the required private tutoring services can also be a factor.

Perhaps the cons are subjective and quite surmountable?

The history of family education, or "We all learned a little ..."

home preparation in various subjects - a long tradition of Russian society of the pre-Soviet period, which came from Byzantium along with Christianity. Then church books were studied: the Psalter, the Book of Hours, the Gospel.

In the Petrine era, the widespread dissemination of academic education initiated the desire for enlightenment in various circles of society. Foreigners were involved as teachers and tutors. A whole series of satirical works, ridiculing the principles of provincial education, reveals the squalor and narrow-mindedness of the petty nobility and the "teachers" they hire. Nevertheless, very talented people could also act as teachers, such as the fabulist Krylov or the poet Zhukovsky (the children's mentor of Emperor Alexander II).

In general, home schooling of children had the task of instilling manners, giving basic knowledge in mathematics, writing and foreign languages, teaching the expression of one's thoughts (oral and written), that is, preparing for the next stage of obtaining knowledge - academic.

Many famous people of Russia were educated in the family at one time: Pushkin, Bunin and even those closer to the modern era, for example, the physicist Ginzburg, the founder of cosmonautics Tsiolkovsky, the designer Korolev, Marshal Rokossovsky, the creator of the hydrogen bomb Sakharov.

AT Soviet period children could only be taught in schools. This allowed the state to regulate the educational process of the younger generation.

How about abroad?

Perhaps everyone knows the legend of Thomas Edison, whom school teachers recognized as incapable of science, as a result of which his mother was engaged in his preparation, and very successfully.

History knows other famous foreigners who received homeschooling: Franklin Roosevelt, Louis Armstrong, Charles Dickens, Walt Disney, Agatha Christie, Abraham Lincoln, Pierre Curie, Claude Monet, Charlie Chaplin.

All these wonderful examples only confirm that good homeschooling of children is the key to their successful future.

Unfortunately, despite the fact that homeschooling is a term of Anglo-Saxon origin, in most European countries, the legal process of family education of children, in fact, has many problems. Among them are obsessive control by inspectors, features of the organization of certification, deliberate underestimation of points during testing.

The most democratic approach to the system of family education in the United States. To enter a university, a child can submit a questionnaire filled out by parents with a list of subjects studied and take tests in the necessary sciences in the general stream. In other words, a state certificate is not needed at all.

How to build a family preparation process

After attaching the child to the school, which will conduct intermediate tests, it is necessary to move on to learning. The main preparatory steps are:

  • getting textbooks;
  • asking teachers for a list of necessary additional literature on the topics studied;
  • determining possible requirements for exams;
  • drawing up a home schooling program;
  • the formation of a schedule of classes with a list of disciplines for development.

How can a process be built:

  1. Reading and retelling a paragraph in a textbook, answering questions.
  2. Watch a video on the topic of the lesson.
  3. Performing a test or creative task based on the materials of the Internet.

There are usually 2-3 classes per day in different subjects. Free time can be devoted to sports, development of creative skills: music, dancing, drawing, in-depth study interesting material, foreign languages, as well as communication with peers and walks on fresh air.

The advantages are obvious: you do not need to buy a school uniform, donate money for curtains, classroom repairs and gifts for teachers. In the conditions of home schooling, classes are held in the maximum comfortable conditions both in terms of the time of the event, and the choice of a comfortable posture, the admissibility of expressing any opinion, with the possibility of snacks and rest.

Compulsory tests are held in grades 9 and 11, as they require the issuance of documents on education. Knowledge can also be controlled primary school(after 4th grade). The rest of the exams are optional.

Studying at home is easy!

The information environment offers wide access opportunities for mastering not only school subjects, but also serious academic disciplines.

She is also full of:

  • thematic libraries;
  • video funds;
  • on-line courses;
  • distance learning resources in educational institutions;
  • various formats of wide communication.

Therefore, home training in manicure, hairdressing, knitting, carpentry, home renovation is a common practice for interested people who need practical knowledge.

Unfortunately, it is still possible to get a diploma only in accredited institutions, paying them the cost of training or testing.

The Future of Family Education

Modern world requires more agility from the school system, which has remained virtually unchanged for decades - standard set subjects with a constant number of teaching hours.

Meanwhile, in some countries, for admission to universities, it is required to pass tests in a limited range of disciplines: native and foreign language, history, mathematics, computer science. It turns out that the rest of the subjects studied at school may be needed only if the applicant specializes in some subject.

Family education is currently striving to bridge the gap between the school system and the demands placed on it quickly. emerging technologies with a highly specialized focus. These processes are taking place all over the world.

Therefore, homeschooling will gain supporters, at least in the intellectual environment, and its volumes will increase over time, pushed by the processes of globalization:

  • facilitating movement between countries;
  • fast communication capabilities;
  • reducing the cost of information resources;
  • the spread of the freelance system as the most convenient in a number of economic areas;
  • the transition of trade to the main turnovers on the Internet;
  • development of distance learning forms;
  • restructuring the thinking of modern children from the process of memorization to the ability to find and structure the necessary information;
  • higher requirements for the specialization of knowledge in industry and the national economy;
  • the growing desire of people for independence from the state and its institutions.

Family education is a promising system for preparing children, providing broad horizons for the development of creativity, independent thinking, simultaneous completion of programs of Russian and foreign schools with parallel certification.

The main thing is that it does not look like a satirical short film "Homeschooling", where the parents look like crazy people with crazy ideas, and the child is limited in communication with peers, leading the life of a hermit imposed on him.
