It is necessary to pray not only in grief or life's difficulties, but also every day, thanking God for all the blessings that He sends us. Prayers are read when they wake up and go to bed, and thereby invoke the grace of God for life. A constant prayer rule brings spiritual peace and tranquility.

During the day, unpleasant emotions accumulate, fatigue, committed actions burden the conscience. All this adversely affects sleep. Not always heavy thoughts about the future let you fall asleep. Brief and understandable prayers to God, the Blessed Virgin and saints before going to bed will help calm your thoughts and tell you how best to proceed.

Why should you pray daily?

Modern life is very busy, it requires from a person full dedication and constant acceleration, combining many things. It is important for an Orthodox Christian not to lose sight of the main thing, namely the need for constant communication with the Creator. It is important to highlight certain time to read the prayer for the coming dream and stick to it steadily. This will help to develop a habit and life will certainly begin to change for the better.

Prayer before bed will help:

  • turn thoughts to God;
  • bring repentance for unworthy deeds committed during the day;
  • to thank for life and health, daily bread, pleasant moments;
  • drive away bad thoughts;
  • ask for support and help for the future.

You can read only one prayer or read the full evening prayer rule, turn to God and the saints in ready-made texts or in your own words. The choice depends on the desire of the worshiper and the availability of free time. If a person is busy with work and household duties, you can learn a few prayers and read on the way, or doing monotonous work.

If there are problems with sleep due to worries and stress, then it is recommended to read the evening prayer rule from the prayer books. An appeal to the Almighty, the Mother of God will help to realize that not everything is in the power of man, but everything is possible for God, the nerves will calm down and a peaceful sleep will come.

Prayer is a spiritual work that brings good results. The one who prays notices that he is gaining love, patience, and peace in his soul. It doesn't come all at once, but you have to strive for it. A person gradually conquers passions, takes over bad habits.

Whom do they pray to before going to bed?

Evening prayer includes an appeal to God, the Blessed Virgin Mary, the guardian angel. Also, with separate prayers, they turn to the Most Holy Spirit, the Life-Giving Cross. Included in the rules and prayers for every hour of the day and night, written by St. John Chrysostom, commemoration, confession of sins.

Before going to bed, they ask God for forgiveness of sins. Bad deeds deprive people of grace and drive away the guardian angel, since holiness and evil are incompatible. But if you have not yet managed to become a saint, do not despair, because the Bible says: "There is no person who would not sin." Daily prayers will help in the work on correcting life, because the Almighty always comes forward, appreciating even one good intention.

God forgives those who sincerely repent, their souls are freed from the burden of sins, and a state of peace and hope for the best sets in. They ask God and the guardian angel for protection from evil, since the devil confuses a person and is the cause of falling into sin. The main note of night prayers is to become worthy of the grace of God, to be worthy of eternal life with God and His saints.

Requests to the Mother of God consist in instruction on good deeds and a sinless life. There is one unusual prayer in the rule - the kontakion to the Virgin Mary, briefly called the "Choose Voivode". This prayer was written after the miraculous lifting of the siege of Constantinople, when the patriarch with the icon of the Virgin went around the walls of the city, and the danger was over.

Evening prayer rule

In the Orthodox tradition, there are ready-made prayer rules for reading in the morning and in the evening. They are obligatory for all Christians. They can be found in every prayer book. These prayers are ancient and written by saints who had great spiritual experience.

For beginners, the meaning of a large number of prayers is captured only in general terms and can be interpreted by each in his own way, sometimes incorrectly. Expressions such as "fierce bodily anger" (severe bodily suffering) are not always clear to readers. Misunderstanding the words of the prayer turns prayer into mere meaningless reading.

The need of the soul to converse with God in an understandable language is better than beautiful highly poetic works in Church Slavonic, but incomprehensible to the mind of the praying one. Many collections of prayers and church hymns translated into Russian have been published. There is the so-called Explanatory Prayer Book, which includes the most common prayers, morning and night, the main liturgical texts, troparia and kontakia of major holidays.

Strong prayers for the coming dream

Prayer rules are helpers designed to teach a Christian how to pray correctly. They do not cancel their own prayer, but only direct it. In addition to the rules presented, there are other forms of night prayers.

The Optina elders wrote that prayer should be according to its power. It is better to reduce the number of prayers, but read them daily, than to read a lot, but not always. Elder Ambrose said: “It is better when the source flows incessantly, at least a little, than a lot with interruptions ... It is better not to have a great rule, but to constantly fulfill it, rather than a lot of perfect abandonment with interruptions.”

Three powerful prayers for the night

Great saint of God Seraphim of Sarov advised 3 strong prayers for everyday reading:

  • "Our Father" 3 times;
  • “Virgin Mother of God, rejoice” 3 times;
  • Creed 1 time.

The text of the prayer "Our Father".

V Orthodox Church prayer for the coming dream necessary step every day. Reading an appeal to the Lord and the saints is not a duty that you just have to serve, but a bright and clean end to the day, purifying thoughts and spirit from everything that accumulates during the day.

How to read a prayer for a dream to come for the laity determines the prayer rule. It can be either one of the general options that any believing Orthodox Christian will resort to as a guide, or it can be individually compiled by the priest in the church for a particular person, taking into account his needs and the need to speak out or thank the Almighty.

According to the prayer rule, the evening prayer for the coming dream can be either complete - that is, long enough, in Church Slavonic, or short, up to three prayers, and perhaps even in simple and understandable Russian. A short prayer rule for the coming dream is used as a guide on eventful days when there is absolutely no time to read, or by novice parishioners who have just converted to the faith.

Prayers for the coming dream in Russian

The conservative Orthodox Church prefers to use the Church Slavonic language in services and prayers, which often seems completely incomprehensible to those who have just come to the Lord. In order not to try to speak with the Almighty in a language that the layman himself does not understand at all, in this case it is better to choose and read a prayer for the coming dream in Russian.

There are many rumors and rumors on this subject, as if only the original should be followed, but if you think about it, the Church Slavonic version is also translated, it was just done long before today. However, the main thing in prayer for the future is the understanding of one's speech, one's repentance and gratitude, one's appeal to the Lord and the saints. Prayer for sleep should come from the soul, and not from the lips.

Almost all common speeches of the Orthodox Church addressed to the Lord have been translated into Russian and other languages, and prayers for the coming dream are no exception.

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, through the prayers of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Glory to Thee, our God, glory to Thee.

The King of Heaven, the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who dwells everywhere and fills everything with Himself, the Source of blessings and life Giver, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save our souls, Good One.

Trisagion

Lord's Prayer

Our Father who is in heaven! May your name be hallowed; let your kingdom come; may Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us our daily bread today; and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Tropari

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us, / for, finding no excuse for ourselves, / we, sinners, offer this prayer to You, as to the Lord: / “Have mercy on us!”

Glory: Lord, have mercy on us, for we trust in You, / do not be very angry with us / and do not remember our iniquities, / but look now, as the Merciful / and deliver us from our enemies. / For You are our God and we are Your people, / we are all the work of Your hands / and we call on Your name.

And now: Open the doors of Mercy for us, / blessed Mother of God, / so that, hoping in You, we will not be ashamed, / but delivered by Your prayers from troubles, / for You are the salvation of the Christian race.

Lord have mercy. (12)

The first prayer of Saint Macarius the Great, to God the Father

Eternal God and the King of all created things, who made me live until this hour!

Forgive me the sins that I committed on this day in deed, word and thought, and cleanse, Lord, my humble soul from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. And give me, Lord, to spend this night in a peaceful sleep, so that, rising from my humble bed, I would please Your most holy name all the days of my life and defeat the enemies that attack me - fleshly and incorporeal.

And deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and vicious desires. For Yours is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen

Second Prayer of Saint Antiochus to our Lord Jesus Christ

Almighty, Word of the Father, Jesus Christ! Being Himself perfect, in Your great mercy, never leave me, Your servant, but always abide in me. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not give me over to the rebellion of the serpent and do not leave me to the will of Satan, for the seed of destruction is in me. But You, Lord God, accepting worship from everyone, Holy King Jesus Christ, preserve me during sleep with an unfading light, by Your Holy Spirit, with which You sanctified Your disciples. Grant, Lord, to me, Your unworthy servant, Your salvation on my bed: enlighten my mind with the light of understanding of Your holy Gospel, my soul with love for Your Cross, my heart with the purity of Your word, my body with Your passionless suffering, my thought with Your humility save. And raise me up at the right time to glorify You. For You are glorified with Your Father without beginning and with the Most Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

Prayer three, to the Holy Spirit

Lord, Heavenly King, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, have mercy and have mercy on me, Your sinful servant, and let me go unworthy, and forgive everything in which I have sinned against You today as a man, moreover, not only as a man, but even worse cattle: my free sins and involuntary, known and unknown; those from youth and evil habits, and those from irascibility and carelessness. But if I have sworn by Your name or blasphemed him in my mind; or whom I reproached, or slandered whom in my anger, or saddened, or irritated by something; either he lied, or he didn't sleep at the right time, or a beggar came to me, and I despised him; or made my brother sad, or entered into a quarrel; or whom he condemned, or boasted, or became proud, or became angry; or, when I stood in prayer, my mind was carried away by the seduction of this world; or had impure thoughts; or ate too much, or got drunk, or laughed foolishly; either he thought evil, or, seeing someone else's beauty, he was wounded by it in his heart; or obscene spoken; or laughed at my brother's sin, while my sins are countless; or was negligent in prayer; or, having done something else evil, I don’t remember - for all this and more than this I have done! Have mercy on me, my Creator, Lord, your dull and unworthy servant, and leave, and let go, and forgive me, as a good and philanthropist, may I lie down in peace, sleep and rest, I, prodigal, sinful and unhappy, and bow down and sing And I will glorify Your most honored name with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now, and always, and forever. Amen.

Fourth Prayer of Saint Macarius the Great

What shall I bring to Thee or what shall I repay Thee, rich in gifts, immortal King, merciful and philanthropic Lord, for bringing me, lazy to serve Thee and doing nothing good, to the end of this past day, directing my soul to conversion and salvation? Be merciful to me, a sinner and deprived of any good deed, raise up my fallen soul, defiled in immeasurable sins, and remove from me all the evil thoughts of this visible life. Forgive me, the Only Sinless One, my sins, with which I have sinned against You this day knowingly and out of ignorance, in word and deed, and thought, and all my feelings. You yourself save me from any enemy misfortune, covering with your divine power and inexpressible philanthropy and strength. Cleanse, O God, cleanse the multitude of my sins. Delight, Lord, to deliver me from the net of the evil one, and save my passionate soul, and illuminate me with the light of Your face when You come in glory, and now let me fall asleep without condemnation, and without dreams and embarrassment, keep the thoughts of Your servant. And drive away all satanic deeds from me, and enlighten the intelligent eyes of my heart, so that I do not fall asleep in the sleep of death. And send me an angel of peace, guardian and mentor of my soul and body, and deliver me from my enemies; yes, rising from my bed, I will bring you thanksgiving prayers. O Lord, hear me, Thy sinful and poor servant, with will and conscience! Give me, having risen from sleep, to learn from Your word, and through Your Angels drive the demonic despondency far away from me! May I bless your holy name and glorify and glorify the Most Pure Theotokos Mary, whom you gave to us sinners for protection, and hear her praying for us; for I know that She imitates Your philanthropy and does not cease to pray. Her intercession, and the sign of the Holy Cross, and for the sake of all Your saints, save my poor soul, Jesus Christ, our God, for You are holy and glorified forever.

Amen.

Prayer Five

Lord, our God, all that I have sinned today in word, deed and thought, as a good and philanthropist, forgive me. Peaceful sleep and serene grant me. For You are the guardian of our souls and bodies, and we give glory to You, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now, and always, and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayer six

Lord our God, in whom we believe and whose name we call upon more than every name! Give us, going to sleep, relief to the soul and body, and save us from every dream and dark voluptuousness. Stop the outbursts of passions, extinguish the fire of bodily excitations. Let us live chastely in deeds and words, so that in leading a virtuous life we will not be deprived of the blessings You promised, for You are blessed forever. Amen.

    Lord Jesus Christ, write me, Your servant, in the book of life and grant me a good end.

    Lord, my God, although I have done nothing good in Your sight, but grant me, by Your grace, to make a good start.

    Lord, sprinkle in my heart the dew of Your grace.

    Lord of heaven and earth, remember me, Thy sinful servant, filthy and unclean, in Thy Kingdom. Amen.

    Lord, accept me in repentance.

    Lord, don't leave me.

    Lord, do not lead me into misfortune.

    Lord, give me good thoughts.

    Lord, give me tears, and the memory of death, and contrition.

    Lord, give me humility, chastity and obedience.

    Lord, give me patience, generosity and meekness.

    Lord, put in me the root of goodness - Your fear in my heart.

    Lord, make me worthy to love You with all my soul and mind and to do Your will in everything.

    Lord, protect me from some people, and demons, and passions, and from any other inappropriate deed.

    Lord, I know that You do everything according to Your will - may Your will be done in me a sinner, for You are blessed forever. Amen.

Prayer Eight, to our Lord Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of the prayers of Your most revered Mother and Your incorporeal Angels, as well as Your prophet and Forerunner and Your Baptist, and the theological Apostles, bright and victorious martyrs, reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints - deliver me from the current demonic embarrassment. Thus, my Lord and Creator, who does not desire the death of a sinner, but that he may be converted and live, give me also conversion, cursed and unworthy. Retrieve me from the jaws of the destroying serpent that wants to devour me and bring me alive to hell. Yes, my Lord, my consolation, for the sake of me unhappy clothed in perishable flesh, deliver me from squalor and give consolation to my poor soul. Inspire my heart to do Thy commandments, and to leave evil deeds, and to receive Thy blessedness. For in You, O Lord, I trust, save me.

Prayer 9, to the Most Holy Theotokos, Peter the Studion

To You, the Most Pure Mother of God, I, unhappy, fall down and pray: You know, Queen, that I constantly sin and anger Your Son and my God, and, although I repeatedly repent, I turn out to be a deceiver before God. I repent, trembling, whether the Lord will strike me already, and soon I do the same again! I pray that You, my Lady, the Lady Mother of God, knowing this, have mercy, strengthen and teach me to do good. For You know, O my Lady Theotokos, that I strongly hate my evil deeds and with all my mind I love the law of my God; but I don’t know, Madam Most Pure, why I love what I hate, but I don’t do good. Do not allow, Most Pure One, to fulfill my will, for it is evil, but may the will of Your Son and my God be done, may it save me, and enlighten and give the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that from now on I will stop doing bad things, and the rest of the time I would live according to the commandments Your Son, to whom all glory, honor and power are due with His Father without beginning, and His most holy and good and life-giving Spirit, now and always and forever and ever. Amen.

Prayers for the coming dream in Church Slavonic

In the Orthodox Church, the old dialect, the Church Slavonic language, is widely used. Services in churches are read on it, the laity turn their prayers to God on it, and church literature is also written in this language. In most cases, it is intuitively understandable to a Russian-speaking person, and those who have been converted to the Lord for a long time and often visit prayer places and temples, he is generally known at a fairly good level.

The clergy of the Orthodox Church urge believers to relate to the sacrament of evening prayer for the coming dream with special attention. It is impossible to mutter the standard words the required number of times and assume that communication with heaven has taken place - you need to read and think about every word spoken, feel the meaning that prayer carries (praises the Almighty and the saints, repents, thanks higher power for what the layman has). Therefore, the Orthodox Prayer Book in the Church Slavonic language should be chosen for prayer for the coming dream only if you understand well the meaning of what is written in it.

There is a possibility, without resorting to anyone outside help, to personally deal with the interpretation of prayers for the coming dream from the Church Slavonic Prayer Book. This may be necessary if you want to fulfill your obligations to God and the church in the same way as they did it from time immemorial in Russia. In order to correctly interpret the meaning of the evening prayers for the coming dream, you can compare them with those translated into Russian. In this version, all words are clear, and the translation is almost verbatim, with the exception of obsolete interjections and particles.

It is better not to read prayers, but to know by heart, but this does not mean that you need to devote to the study of the Church Slavonic Orthodox Prayer Book. Over time, speeches repeated day after day for the coming dream will themselves be deposited in the head and heart, and each word will be understandable and eloquent, and at first you can read them from the phone screen or from the printed Orthodox Prayer Book (Akathist).

It will be even better at first, because one of the main difficulties of praying for the coming dream in church language immediately after full understanding is the correct placement of stress. If setting stress is difficult, you should find a Prayer Book with marks already marked, so it will be easy to read the rule for sleep.

And give me, O Lord, to pass in peace in this night of sleep, and having arisen from my humble bed, I will please your most holy name, all the days of my stomach, and I will stop the fleshly and incorporeal enemies that fight me. And deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil lusts. Amen.

Kontakion to the Theotokos

I place all my hope in You, Mother of God, keep me under Your shelter.

Virgin Mother of God, do not despise me, a sinner, demanding Your help and Your intercession, my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.

Prayer of St. Joannicius

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit: Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

It is worthy to eat as truly blessed Thee, the Mother of God, the Blessed and Immaculate and Mother of our God. The most honest Cherubim and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, without the corruption of God the Word, who gave birth to the real Mother of God, we magnify Thee.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

Reading the Prayer Book for the future should be done alone in front of the images, lighting candles or lamps. If the family is unanimously turned to the church, then the evening appeal to God can be family-wide, but this tradition does not cancel the personal appeal to the Lord, but only supplements it. Even if it is customary in the family to pray together before going to bed, after that you should definitely read the prayer for the coming dream alone with heaven.

Tropari

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us; bewildering any answer, we offer this prayer as the Lord of sin: have mercy on us.

Lord, have mercy on us, we put our trust in Thee; do not be angry with us, remember our iniquities below, but look now as if you are merciful, and deliver us from our enemies; Thou art our God, and we are Thy people, all works by Thy hand, and we call on Thy name.

Open the doors of mercy to us, Blessed Mother of God, who hope in Thee, let us not perish, but let us be delivered from troubles by Thee: Thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

Bewildered of any answer - not finding any excuse for themselves (bewildered - not knowing what to do, being unskillful; the word answer here is a translation of the Greek word "protection", "justification" - cf. Russian: "call to account").

We hoped for You - because we relied on You (so in the Greek text of the prayer; hope - the form of the 1st person plural of the past tense - aorist - the verb to trust; the Church Slavonic version means: we hoped for You). Green is strong. Below - and not. Yako is merciful - because You are merciful. We are us. All works by Your hand - we are all the creations of Your hands (the dash would have shone this expression: after the Greek original in the Slavonic translation, a copula verb is missing, in full form it would sound: all we do is work by your hand; Your hand - the form will give birth. case of duals. numbers).

By you - in the meaning: through you.

These troparia are the creation of St. John of Damascus.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)

Prayer 1, Saint Macarius the Great, to God the Father

Eternal God and the King of every creature, having made me sing even at this hour, forgive me the sins that I have done in this day by deed, word and thought; and cleanse, Lord, my humble soul from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. And give me, Lord, to pass in peace in this night of sleep, and having risen from my humble bed, I will please your most holy name all the days of my stomach, and I will stop the carnal and incorporeal enemies that fight me. Deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil lusts. For Yours is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Even at this hour to reach - to live up to this hour (to reach - to reach). Even I created - which I created (made). Humble - here: miserable, worthless (protect yourself from the terrible danger of false humility and proud recognition of yourself as humble!). In the night of this dream, pass - oversleep this night, "pass the field" of this night's sleep. From my humble bed (in some prayer books: from my humble bed) - from my miserable, meager bed (humble often means: "low, base" even just in a physical sense). Popper - I will overcome, I will trample. The lusts of the evil ones are evil desires.

And deliver me, O Lord, from vain thoughts that defile me, and from evil lusts. With these words of prayer, other words from the teaching of St. Macarius on prayer are peculiarly echoed: “The true basis of prayer is this: to be attentive to thoughts and pray in great silence and peace. then to cut off, but to aspire with thought to God and not to fulfill the desires of thoughts, but to collect whirling thoughts from everywhere together, distinguishing natural thoughts from the evil ones. trees, therefore, those intending to pass through this place should stretch out their hands and with effort and difficulty part the branches in front of them.So the soul is surrounded by a whole forest of thoughts inspired by a resisting force, which is why great diligence and attentiveness of the mind are needed in order for a person to distinguish alien thoughts inspired by a resisting force. force."

Prayer 2, Saint Antiochus to our Lord Jesus Christ

Almighty, Word of the Father, Jesus Christ Himself is perfect, for the sake of Thy mercy, never leave me, Thy servant, but always rest in me. Jesus, good Shepherd of Your sheep, do not betray me to sedition of the serpent, and do not leave me the desire of Satan, for there is a seed of aphids in me. You are, O Lord, worshiped God, Holy King, Jesus Christ, while sleeping, save me with a flickering light, by Your Holy Spirit, Who sanctified Your disciples. Give, Lord, to me, Your unworthy servant, Your salvation on my bed; enlighten my mind with the light of the mind of Thy holy Gospel, soul with the love of Thy Cross, heart with the purity of Thy word, my body with Thy passionless passion; Save my thought with Your humility, and raise me up in time like Your praise. As if you were glorified with Your Father without beginning and with the Most Holy Spirit forever. Amen.

He himself is perfect - being Himself perfect (soy - participle from the verb being: appearing, existing). Sedition - excitement, confusion, rebellion. To the desire of Satan - to the will of Satan (to the will of Satan). The seed of aphids is the seed of death. Flickering - unfading. Give - give. The light of reason - here: the light of understanding. Your passionless passion - Your suffering, alien to passion. The time is like - the right time.

Prayer 3, to the Holy Spirit

Lord, the King of Heaven, the Comforter, the Soul of Truth, have mercy and have mercy on me, Your sinful servant, and let me go unworthy, and forgive all, the fir tree has sinned today like a man, moreover, not like a man, but more woeful than cattle, my free sins and involuntary , known and unknown; even from youth and from science they are evil, and even from impudence and despondency. If I swear by Your name, or blaspheme in my thoughts; or whom I reproach; or I slandered whom with my anger, or grieved, or about what I became angry; or lied, or was worthless, or came to me poor, and despised him; or my brother grieved, or married, or whom I condemned; or you become proud, or you become proud, or you become angry; or standing by me in prayer, my mind moving about the wickedness of this world, or the corruption of thoughts; or overeat, or drunk, or laughing madly; or I thought evil, or saw the kindness of someone else, and that my heart was wounded, or dissimilar verbs, or I laughed at the sin of my brother, but my essence is countless sins; or about prayer, not radih, or otherwise that crafty deeds, I don’t remember, that’s all and more than these deeds. Have mercy on me, my Creator, Thy despondent and unworthy servant, and leave me, and let go, and forgive me, for I am Good and Lover of mankind; yes, I will lie down in peace, sleep and rest, prodigal, sinful and accursed az; and I will worship, and I will sing, and I will glorify Your honorable name, with the Father and His Only Begotten Son, now and forever, and forever. Amen.

The whole tree, I have sinned - everything in which I have sinned before You (all, the tree - everything, how much; I have sinned - I have sinned). Today is today. More than that - and more. Grief - worse, worse. Even - which. From youth - from youth, from a young age (and not "because of youth"). From science evil - from evil learning. From arrogance - from shamelessness, insolence. More - if. I swore - I swore. Pokhulih e - blasphemed him (further in the prayer follows a series of verbs in the form of the 1st person of the past tense - aorist; reproach - I reproached; slander - I slandered; grieved - I grieved, etc.). Bad - not on time. Svadih - excited quarrels, quarreled someone. I stand in prayer - when I stood in prayer. Moved about the wickedness of this world - rushed to the worldly (to the lies of this world). Sly - evil, bad. Seeing someone else's kindness - seeing someone else's beauty (or good properties in general: kindness means both external beauty and, in general, perfection). Toyu wounded by the heart - she was wounded in the heart. Unsimilar verbs - spoke inappropriate, obscene. My sins are innumerable, while my sins are innumerable. That is all and more than these deeds - because I did all this and more.

At the beginning of the prayer and at the end of it, despondency is mentioned among the causes of numerous sins: ... Forgive me, all of you, I have sinned ... from despondency ... Have mercy on me, my Master, my Creator, your sad and unworthy servant ... Despondency is one of the eight main passions, and the fight against this passion is inevitable for every Christian.

“The soul, wounded by the arrow of this ruinous passion, really falls asleep for any striving for virtue and observation of one’s spiritual feelings ... he does not think of anything else, as about food and a womb, until, having met somewhere a commonwealth in any man or woman, numb in the same coldness, he gets involved in their affairs and needs ... The main opposition to him will be: do not give in, sit down to work ".

This prayer of repentance contains a whole list of sins that we sin daily; In order for this daily repentance to be sincere, one should delve into the essence of the sins confessed here, into their connection and difference. Some of them deserve special mention.

... If I swear by Your name ... Here are the words of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself: You also heard what was said of the ancients: do not transgress your oath, but fulfill your oaths before the Lord. But I say to you: do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God; nor the earth, for it is His footstool; nor Jerusalem, because it is the city of the great King; do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. But let your word be: yes, yes; no no; but what is more than this is from the evil one (Matt. 5:33-37). Undoubtedly, the words of the evening confession of sins speak not only of an immediate oath, but also of any violation of the 3rd commandment of the Law of God - about worship and commemoration of the name of God in vain (note that the violation of the same commandment includes catechism and inattention in prayer - like pronouncing name of God with violation of reverence and deceitfulness).

... Or blasphemy in my thinking ... These words confess blasphemous thoughts - disgusting, dirty thoughts and ideas that arise primarily during prayer and during worship.

“Whoever is troubled by the spirit of blasphemy and who wants to get rid of him, let him know without a doubt that it is not his soul that is guilty of such thoughts, but an unclean demon ... Therefore, we, despising him and imputing his thoughts for nothing, will say to him: Get away from Me , satan: I will worship the Lord my God and serve him alone (cf. Matt. 4:10); let your words turn against your head!"

"Whoever has triumphed over this passion has renounced pride." "Let us stop judging and condemning our neighbor, and we will not be afraid of blasphemous thoughts: for the cause and root of the second is the first." The prayer-confession also draws our attention to these sins, internally connected with blasphemy, against our neighbor:

... Or whom I reproach; or slander someone with my anger, or grieved ... Here we are talking about a direct reproach (reproaches), about a passionate unjust condemnation (slander someone with my anger); finally, even "just" and not expressed directly anger in one way or another upsets our neighbors (sorrowful). Prayer of repentance turns us to the root of these sins against our neighbor: ... or about what you are angry ... Anger is one of the eight main passions.

"Nothing hinders the coming of the Holy Spirit in us so much as anger."

Saint John Listvichnik

***

"It is not useful to be angry, either without a reason or for a good reason; for this is justly forbidden by the Lord (see: Matt. 5:22)."

Venerable Nil of Sinai

***

Anger is permissible only at demons and at oneself: "Be angry with sin, that is, with yourself and the devil, so as not to sin against God."

Venerable Hesychius of Jerusalem

***

... Or saddened my brother ... It would seem that this sin has just been discussed; but above it was a question of sadness caused by manifestations of anger, and my brother can be saddened by inattention, and unreason, and simply my general sinfulness.

... Or svdih ... Swaditi - quarrel, stir up discord.

... Or whom I condemn ... Let us recall the words of the apostle: Whoever reviles his brother or judges his brother, the law reviles him and the law judges him; and if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one Lawgiver and Judge, able to save and destroy; and who are you to judge others? (James 4:11-12).

... Or you become angry, or you become proud, or you become angry ... But it has already been said above: or about what you became angry; is this a repeat? Perhaps the prefix times - indicates a different quality, a different level of confessed passion: a fairly strong grip with anger (angry can also refer to a fleeting feeling).

... Or seeing someone else's kindness, and wounded by that heart ... Wounded by the heart - that is, he was wounded in the very heart, received a painful heart wound (ulcer). The ambiguity of the word kindness allows us to attribute this phrase both to the temptation of someone's external beauty (voluptuous thoughts, burning and painful), and to envy, always painful; apply these words to your own mental ulcer.

... Or did you laugh at the sin of my brother, but my essence is countless sins ... Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not feel the beam in your eye? Or how will you say to your brother: “Give me, I will take the speck out of your eye,” but, behold, there is a log in your eye? Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see how to take the speck out of your brother's eye (Matthew 7:3-5).

Prayer 4, Saint Macarius the Great

What will I bring to Thee, or what will I repay Thee, the most gifted Immortal King, the generous and philanthropic Lord, as if lazy to me for Your pleasure, and did nothing good, did You bring to the end of this past day, the conversion and salvation of my soul building? Be merciful to me to the sinner and naked of every good deed, raise up my fallen soul, defiled in immeasurable sins, and take away from me all the evil thought of this visible life. Forgive my sins, O only Sinless One, even though I have sinned on this day, in knowledge and ignorance, in word and deed, and thought, and all my feelings. You yourself, covering, save me from every opposing situation with your divine power, and indescribable philanthropy, and strength. Cleanse, O God, cleanse the multitude of my sins. Delight, Lord, deliver me from the net of the evil one, and save my passionate soul, and fall on me with the light of Your face, when you come in glory, and now sleep uncondemned, create sleep, and without dreaming, and undisturbed, keep the thought of Your servant, and all Satan's work reject me, and enlighten with me the reasonable eyes of the heart, so that I will not fall asleep in death. And send me an angel of peace, a guardian and mentor of my soul and body, may he deliver me from my enemies; Yes, having risen from my bed, I will bring Thee prayers of thanksgiving. Hey, Lord, hear me, a sinful and wretched servant of Yours, with pleasure and conscience; grant me that I have risen to learn your words, and demonic despondency is far from me driven away to be created by your angels; May I bless Your holy name, and glorify and glorify the Most Pure Theotokos Mary, You have given us sinners intercession, and accept this one who prays for us; we know, as if imitating Your philanthropy, and praying does not stop. Toya by intercession, and the sign of the Holy Cross, and for the sake of all Your saints, keep my poor soul, Jesus Christ our God, for Thou art Holy, and glorified forever. Amen.

Greatly gifted - bestowing great gifts, generous. Like me being lazy to please You - like me, lazy to serve You. And he who did nothing good - and did nothing good. You brought me to the end - You brought me to the end. Past - past. Building - here: arranging. Naked every good deed - deprived of any good deeds (the image of grace, as well as good deeds, as clothes that dress a person, is repeated in the New Testament and is very frequent in liturgical poetry and ascetic literature. Compare the words of God Almighty in the Apocalypse: Behold, I go like a thief: blessed is he who watches and keeps his clothes, so that he does not go naked and that they do not see his shame - Rev. 16:15).

Even I have sinned - with which I have sinned against You (even - who, having sinned - I have sinned: the form of the 1st person singular Past tense - aorist). From every cooperative situation - from every onslaught of evil. Lukavago - here: Devil. Passionate - full of passions, subject to passions. When - when. Detail - business, activity. Drive away - drive away. She - yes, indeed. Desire and conscience - In the meaning. : in the expression of my will and in my conscience (desire - arbitrariness, free will - and conscience in this expression belongs to the one who prays, comes from him). I will rise - to me when I rise. Learn by your word - learn from your law (the same expression in the morning prayer to the Most Holy Trinity). Yuzhe gave thou - which thou hast given. We bo - for I know. Yako - what. Imitates - strengthens, appeals to (literally: pushes). Toya - Her.

Favor, O Lord, deliver me from the snares of the evil one... and get rid of all Satan's children from me. We will supplement these words of the prayer of St. Macarius the Great with words from his teaching: “The visible world, from kings to the poor, is all in turmoil, in struggle, and none of them knows the reason for this ... He who brought sin, as some reasonable power and essence of Satan, sowed every evil: it secretly acts on the inner man and on the mind and fights with it with thoughts, but people do not know that they are doing this being prompted by some alien force, on the contrary, they think that this is natural and that they do this according to their own reasoning. those who have the peace of Christ and the illumination of Christ know in their minds from whence all this is raised up.

Prayer 5th

Lord our God, if I have sinned in these days in word, deed and thought, forgive me as Good and Lover of mankind. Peaceful sleep and serene grant me. Send your guardian angel, covering and keeping me from all evil; as you are the guardian of our souls and our bodies, and we send glory to you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

If I have sinned - in what I have sinned. Yako - how. Mi - me. Like you are - because you are.

Prayer 6th

Lord our God, in Worthless faith, and His name more than any name we call, give us, departing to sleep, weaken the soul and body, and keep us from every dream, except for dark sweetness; set the striving of passions, quench the kindling of the revolt of the body. Give us a chaste life of deeds and words; Yes, a virtuous residence is receptive, the promised ones will not fall away from Your good ones, for blessed are You forever. Amen.

More - more. Weaken - relief. Dark sweets except for - unaffected by impure lust (sweetness - sensual pleasure, lust; except - outside). Stop it - stop it. Receiving - accepting, receiving back (note that the word itself indicates a return to an undefiled way of life!). Promised - promised. Good - good.

This evening prayer is all directed towards chastity, towards the confrontation between lust and dark sweetness. Such expressions as: the desire of passions and inciting the uprising of the body should not be translated into modern Russian: in Church Slavonic they are more understandable, because they indicate a whole worldview imprinted in them. Modern Christians live in a world literally engulfed in prodigal madness, so even for a married layman striving to live with God, the struggle to live chastely in deeds and words is in its own way no less stressful than for a monk. Prayer is an indispensable weapon in this struggle.

Prayer 7, St. John Chrysostom (24 prayers, according to the number of hours of the day and night)

Lord, do not deprive me of Your heavenly blessings. Lord, deliver me eternal torment. Lord, whether in mind or thought, in word or deed, I have sinned, forgive me. Lord, deliver me from all ignorance and oblivion, and cowardice, and petrified insensitivity. Lord, deliver me from every temptation. Lord, enlighten my heart, darken the evil lust. Lord, if a man has sinned, you, like God, have mercy on me, seeing the weakness of my soul. Lord, send Thy grace to help me, may I glorify Thy holy name. Lord Jesus Christ, write me Thy servant in the book of animals, and grant me a good end. Lord my God, even if I have done nothing good before You, but give me, by Your grace, to lay a good beginning. Lord, sprinkle in my heart the dew of Thy grace. Lord of heaven and earth, remember me Thy sinful servant, cold and unclean, in Thy Kingdom. Amen.

Sinned - I have sinned (past tense - aorist). Hedgehog darken - which darkened (gloom - also an aorist, but a form of the 3rd person). In the book of animals - in the book of life. Even though I have done nothing good - although I have not done anything good. Studnago - vile (literally: shameful; stud - shame).

Lord, receive me in repentance. Lord, don't leave me. Lord, do not lead me into misfortune. Lord, give me a good thought. Lord, give me tears, and the memory of death, and tenderness. Lord, give me the thought of confessing my sins. Lord, give me humility, chastity and obedience. Lord, give me patience, generosity and meekness. Lord, instill in me the root of the good, your fear in my heart. Lord, make me worthy to love Thee with all my soul and thoughts, and do Thy will in everything. Lord, cover me from certain people, and demons, and passions, and from all other unsimilar things. Lord, weigh, as you do, as you will, may your will be done in me a sinner, as if you are blessed forever. Amen.

The root of the good is the root (that is, the basis) of all that is good, of every good. Vesey - You know (You know). Like you do, like you will, that you do what you want.

The great teacher of prayer, St. Theophan the Recluse, attached great importance to these prayers and recommended them to many of his spiritual children as the basis of the prayer rule, as a school of unceasing divine thought. Here are some excerpts from his letters:

"How to read the prayers of St. Chrysostom (24 in the evening prayers for sleep)? Read them before prayer so that attention gathers together ... But at any time mentally repeat. This The best way to accustom oneself to the remembrance of God, and this remembrance is the basis of spiritual life. Lay bows from the waist, and sometimes earthly ones. "-" You can use the prayers of St. Chrysostom instead of your house rule and in the morning. Memorize them and think over each one... In them all spiritual life is commemorated... How many times to commemorate each one - determine it in such a way that you stand in prayer as much as you usually stand idle on the rule. You can attach your prayers to them - choose from the psalms: which rhyme is to your heart, write down that one ... Using these prayers with attention on the rule, you will soon get used to standing at prayer unabashedly. Insert the Jesus Prayer into their midst. For example, having said ten times: “Lord, do not deprive me of Your heavenly blessings,” apply: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.” - "The purpose of short prayers is to promote the collection of thoughts and sobriety. Strength is not in words, but in a feeling for God. It will soon form among those who work on prayer. This is smart prayer. The mind, standing in the heart, sees God and intelligently confesses to Him by invoking Him… Feeling for God is unceasing prayer without words.”

Prayer 8, to our Lord Jesus Christ

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, for the sake of Your Most Honorable Mother, and Your bodiless Angels, the Prophet and Forerunner and Your Baptist, the apostles who speak God, the bright and victorious martyrs, the reverend and God-bearing father, and all the saints with prayers, deliver me from the present demonic condition. Hey, my Lord and Creator, do not want the death of a sinner, but as if to turn and live to be him, give me the conversion of the accursed and unworthy; deliver me from the mouth of the destructive serpent that gapes, devour me and bring me down to hell alive. Hey, my Lord, my consolation, even for the sake of the accursed in corruptible flesh, throw me out of wretchedness, and give consolation to my wretched soul. Plant in my heart to do Thy commandments, and leave evil deeds, and receive Thy blessedness: in Thee, O Lord, trust, save me.

The real state of demons - the current environment of demons, a demonic siege. Do not want - do not want. But it is as if I would turn and live being to him - but that he would turn and be alive. Yawning devour me - who opened his mouth to devour me (gave - open his mouth). Even... clothed - clothed.

... Do not want the death of a sinner, but as if to turn and live to be him ... In prayer, the words of the Lord are quoted from the Book of the prophet Ezekiel: I do not want the death of a sinner, but if the wicked turn from his path and live his being (Ezek.33:11). Here is this verse in the Russian translation of the Bible: Tell them: I live, says the Lord God: I do not want the death of the sinner, but that the sinner turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways; Why should you die, O house of Israel?

Prayer 9, to the Most Holy Theotokos, Peter the Studio

To Thee, the Most Pure Mother of God, as a cursed one, I pray: weigh, Queen, as if I sin without ceasing and anger Your Son and my God, and many times I repent, I find lies before God, and I repent trembling: surely the Lord will strike me, and by the hour again I create: lead this, my Lady, the Lady Theotokos, I pray, have mercy, yes, strengthen, and give good work to me. Vesi bo, my Lady Mother of God, as if by no means an imam in hatred of my evil deeds, and with all my thought I love the law of my God; but we do not know, the Most Pure Lady, from where I hate, she loves, but I transgress the good. Do not allow, Most Pure One, my will to be done, it is not pleasing, but may the will of Your Son and my God be done: may it save me, and enlighten me, and give me the grace of the Holy Spirit, so that from now on I would stop foul deeds, and the rest would live in command Your Son, to Him is due all glory, honor and power, with His Beginningless Father, and His Most Holy and Good and Life-Giving Spirit, now and forever, and forever and ever. Amen.

Vesey - You know. And many times I repent, I find lies before God - and although I repent many times, I turn out to be unfaithful to God (I deceive God). I do the same thing again - I do the same thing again. This leader - knowing this. Do good work and give it to me - do good work and give it to me. It's like an imam in hatred - which I absolutely hate. My evil - my evil. We don’t know - I don’t know. From where I hate, I love - for some reason, what I hate is the very thing I love (literally: from where [those things] that I hate, I love them). Good - good. Yes, from now on, I would stop bad deeds - so that from now on I would stop evil deeds. Other - in the future. Would have lived - would have lived.

This prayer to the Most Holy Theotokos is the cry of a man who has realized how little his will for good can counteract sin. And repentance, quite sincere, and love with all thought for the law of God, and hatred for evil deeds are not in themselves able to save a person from slavery to sin. The words of the apostle Paul are close to the words of this prayer: ... I am carnal, sold under sin. For I do not understand what I am doing: because I do not do what I want, but what I hate, I do. But if I do what I do not want, then ... it is no longer I who do it, but sin living in me. For I know that no good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; because the desire for good is in me, but to do it, I do not find it. The good that I want, I do not do, but the evil that I do not want, I do. But if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but the sin that dwells in me. And so I find the law that when I want to do good, evil belongs to me. For by inner man I find pleasure in the law of God; but I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin that is in my members (Rom. 7:14-23). It is possible to overcome and overcome the law of sin only with God's help, the power God's grace which we cry out for in our prayers.

Prayer 10, to the Most Holy Theotokos

Good Tsar, good Mother, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Your Son and our God on my passionate soul, and with Your prayers guide me to good deeds; Yes, the rest of my life I will pass away without a blemish, and by You I will find paradise, Virgin Mother of God, the only Pure and Blessed.

Passionate - 1) subject to passions; 2) unhappy, suffering; both meanings are combined here. My belly is my life. By You - here: By Your help, through You. I will find - I will get.

Prayer 11, to the Holy Guardian Angel

Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and patron of my soul and body, forgive me all, the fir-tree of those who have sinned today, and deliver me from all the wickedness of the enemy, so that I will anger my God in no sin; but pray for me a sinful and unworthy slave, as if I were worthy, show the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity, and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ, and all the saints. Amen.

All, the fir-tree of sin - everything in which I have sinned (fir-tree - how much). Current - current. From all cunning - from all lies, all tricks. Opposite mi - opposing, opposing me. No sin - no sin. If you show me worthy, you will show me worthy.

Kontakion to the Most Holy Theotokos

The chosen Voivode is victorious, as if we had got rid of the evil ones, thankfully we will describe Ty to Your servant, the Mother of God, but as if having an invincible power, free us from all troubles, let us call Ty: rejoice, Bride of the Bride.

Chosen Governor - invincible Governor (chosen - invincible in battles - battles). Victorious - victorious (singing, that is, a victorious song). Like getting rid of the evil - because they got rid (literally: as they got rid) of evil (from troubles). Thanksgiving - thanksgiving (thankful song). Let's describe Ty - we sing (literally: we write) to You. Like having power - (You), as having power. Not bride - not married (literal translation of the Greek word).

The Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos, beginning with this kontakion, was written in the 7th century in Constantinople. This is the first (and most beautiful) of the akathists, which has become a model for all subsequent ones. All 12 ikos of the akathist end with multiple "rehashings" of the Archangelic greeting to the Blessed Virgin - "Rejoice!", the final of which is - Rejoice, Bride Unbride! We magnify the heavenly purity of the Unsophisticated Virgin, who indescribably gave birth to Christ our God, and in Her purity, the "Most Honorable Cherub" Bride, the Bride, appears before us as the greatest warrior with the forces of evil - the Chosen Governor, who has an invincible power.

Rejoice, Unbrided Bride! If we turn to the Greek language in which the akathist is written, we will see that all these three words, literally translated into Church Slavonic and included in our religious consciousness, should have been perceived by the Greeks somewhat differently than we perceive them.

Rejoice - the greeting of the Archangel Gabriel, brought to us by the Gospel - both before the Nativity of Christ and after it was a common greeting in Greek - the same as our "hello". In the appearance of the Angel, in his marvelous and mysterious words, the inner meaning of the greeting, forgotten in everyday life, of course, was renewed and shone with all its might; akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos (and every later inspired akathist), all permeated with this "rejoice!" and sparkling with the joy of magnificence, also resurrects the meaning of the Greek word, dormant in everyday language. But in Russian (and Old Russian) they greeted each other not with the word "rejoice", but with the word "hello" (in which we usually forget the wishes of health). "Rejoice" remains for us a word always more rich, special - a conscious word about joy, a unique greeting for the Most Pure Virgin Mary and the saints of God.

Bride Not bride - a direct, literal translation of two Greek words. Church Slavonic bride corresponds to the Greek word "nymph", which means not only a girl-bride, but also a newlywed wife and a young woman. The New Testament (and the Greek translation of the Bible) gave this word great mystical depth: The Bride of the Lamb in the Revelation of John the Theologian (Rev. 19:7; 21, 22, 17) is not only destined for Him, but also stands with Him in a mysterious marriage; this is an image of both the Mother of God and the Church (in her we recognize the bride of the Song of Songs and other books of Scripture). And the Greek word, translated by the Slavic word not bride, is a negative form from the first word, meaning "not married"; this word was quite common in Greek. For Greek, but not for Slavic! After all, in Slavic the bride is precisely the unguided, unknown (that is, exactly what the Greek unmarried corresponds to) a girl who has not entered into marriage, although she was destined for him; the word itself carries the meaning of purity. Inside the Slavic language, the word not bride is difficult to explain. It introduces a new shade of meaning into the expression of the akathist: Pure Bride, but - Not a bride, not an ordinary one, not comparable to any other bride.

Other Slavic epithets of the Mother of God, corresponding to the word Nebride, are Unskilful, Unskillful.

The chosen Governor is victorious ... Almost all of us are accustomed to perceiving these words by ear as a single whole, therefore we do not feel the structure of the phrase (quite simple): (to whom?) To the chosen Governor (we) we will describe (what?) a victorious thanksgiving, that is, a victorious thanksgiving song, (why?) like getting rid of the evil ones - since they got rid of troubles.

Glorious Ever-Virgin Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to Your Son and our God, may our souls be saved by You.

I place all my hope in You, Mother of God, keep me under Your shelter.

Virgin Mother of God, do not despise me a sinner, demanding Your help and Your intercession, my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.

By Thee - here: through Thee, by Thy intercession. Under the roof - under the cover.

Prayers "Glorious Ever-Virgin ..." and "All my hope ..." - the creations of St. John of Damascus.

Prayer of St. Joannicius

My hope is the Father, my refuge is the Son, my protection is the Holy Spirit: Holy Trinity, glory to Thee.

The creator of this prayer, St. Ioanniky the Great, repeated it after each verse of the psalms he read on the rule, thus constantly elevating the mind to the Most Holy Trinity.

End of prayers

It is worthy to eat as truly blessed Thee, the Mother of God, the Blessed and Immaculate and Mother of our God. The most honorable Cherubim and the most glorious without comparison Seraphim, without the corruption of God the Word, who gave birth to the real Mother of God, we magnify Thee.

Glory, and now:

Lord have mercy. (Three times)

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.

We see that after those prayers that are final in the "Morning Prayers" section and are marked with the words "End of Prayers", in the "Prayers for the Future Sleep" section (in most prayer books), some more prayers follow, more directly related to going to bed (The prayer of St. John of Damascus is supposed to be read, pointing to the bed, while reading the prayer "Let God rise again" are overshadowed by the sign of the cross and the bed, and the four cardinal points). One of the consequences of this is that we can adapt the general rule more flexibly to our own conditions of life, to our inner state. So, for some people (or in some circumstances of life) it turns out to be more convenient to read the first part of the prayers for sleep in the coming evening, early enough - perhaps before the complete completion of all affairs - and immediately before going to bed, already near your bed, read the remaining prayers. The joint reading of prayers for a dream to come - for example, in a family - can be completed precisely on "It is worthy to eat ..." and a common blessing, and prayers, starting with the prayer of St. John of Damascus, can be read to everyone ... at your bed.

This practice existed in ancient Russia. Under Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century, it was customary to add a few more prayers, literally going to bed and to your bed (the composition of these prayers did not coincide with ours). /Supplement by Archpriest Sergius Pravdolyubov.

Prayer of St. John of Damascus (read it pointing to your bed)

Vladyka, Lover of mankind, will this coffin be for me, or will you still enlighten my accursed soul in the daytime? Seven coffin is before me, seven death is coming. I am afraid of Your judgment, Lord, and endless torment, but I do not stop doing evil; I always anger the Lord my God, and Your Most Pure Mother, and all the heavenly Powers, and my holy guardian angel. We know, O Lord, that I am not worthy of Thy love for mankind, but I am worthy of all condemnation and torment. But, Lord, either I want it or I don't want it, save me. If you save the righteous, nothing is great; and if you have mercy on the pure, it is nothing marvelous: for the essence of Thy mercy is worthy. But on me, a sinner, surprise Your mercy; about this, show Thy philanthropy, so that my malice will not overcome Thy inexpressible goodness and mercy; and as if you were good, arrange a thing about me.

Se - here. Mi - me. Wem bad - so, I know. Yako - here: what. If you save the righteous, because if you save the righteous. Nothing great - there is nothing great in this (great - great). And if you have mercy on a pure one, it is nothing marvelous - and if you have mercy on a pure one, there is nothing surprising in this. Worthy of the essence - because they are worthy. About this - here: in this, this. Inexpressible - inexpressible.

Enlighten my eyes, O Christ God, lest I fall asleep into death, lest my enemy say: Be strong against him.

Be the intercessor of my soul, O God, as I walk in the midst of many nets; Deliver me from them and save me, Blessed One, like a Lover of mankind.

The Most Glorious Mother of God, and the Most Holy Angel of the Holy Angels, we silently sing with heart and mouth, confessing this Mother of God, as if she truly gave birth to God incarnate to us, and praying unceasingly for our souls.

Strengthened - I strengthened (past tense - aorist). This, of course, is about the invisible enemy - the devil.

Those who confess this Mother of God - confessing (openly proclaiming) that She is the Mother of God.

Enlighten my eyes, O Christ God, lest I fall asleep into death, lest my enemy say: Be strong against him. These are the words from the psalm: Look, hear me, O Lord my God, enlighten my eyes, but not when I fall asleep into death, but not when my enemy says: be strong against him (Ps. 12:4-5).

Mark yourself with the cross and speak prayer to the Holy Cross

Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let those who hate Him flee from His presence. As the smoke disappears, let them disappear; as wax melts from the face of fire, so let the demons perish from the face of those who love God, and are marked by the sign of the cross, and say in joy: Rejoice, Most Pure and Life-giving Cross of the Lord, drive away the demons by the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, crucified on you, descended into hell, and who corrected the power of the devil, and gave us His Honorable Cross to you to drive away every adversary. O Most Honorable and Life-Giving Cross of the Lord! Help me with the Holy Lady Virgin Mother of God, and with all the saints forever. Amen.

Spread - dissipate. Vrazi - enemies. Yako - how. From the person - in the meaning: before. Verbs - speakers. Chasing - chasing. The crucified - the crucified. Honest - worthy of honors, glorious. The adversary is the enemy.

Let God arise, and let His enemies be squandered... The beginning of the prayer is taken from the psalm: Let God rise, and let His enemies be squandered, and let those who hate Him flee from His presence. As the smoke disappears, let them disappear; as wax hides from the face of fire, so may sinners (sinners) perish from the presence of God (Ps. 67:1-2). The same verses of the psalm are sung at the Paschal service, interspersed with the Pascha troparion. The words about the Lord Jesus Christ, who descended into hell and trampled down the strength of the devil, also remind us of the troparion (trampling death by death) and other Easter hymns. The power of the Cross of the Lord is inseparable from the Resurrection of Christ; the death and Resurrection of Christ make the Cross a "sign of victory", which is why this prayer, uttered with faith and with love for the Holy Cross, is so powerful to drive away the forces of evil from us.

Or a brief prayer for the Cross

Protect me, Lord, by the power of Your Honorable and Life-Giving Cross, and save me from all evil.

Prayer

Weaken, leave, forgive, God, our sins, free and involuntary, even in word and in deed, even in knowledge and not in knowledge, even in days and nights, even in mind and in thought: forgive us all, as Good and Humanitarian.

Evening prayer for the coming dream

Every Orthodox Christian must adhere to a certain daily prayer rule: morning prayers are read in the morning, and prayers for the coming dream must be read in the evening.

Why you need to read prayers before bed

There is a certain rhythm of prayer reserved for monastics and spiritually advanced laymen.

But for those who have recently come to the Church and are just beginning their prayer journey, it is rather difficult to read it in its entirety. Yes, and it happens that the laity have Unexpected situations when there is too little opportunity and time for prayer.

In this case it is better to read short rule than thoughtlessly and without reverence to chatter the full text.

Often confessors bless beginners to read several prayers, and then, after 10 days, add one prayer to the rule every day. Thus, the habit of prayer reading is formed gradually and naturally.

Important! Any prayer appeal will be supported by Heaven when a person directs his activity to serve God and people.

Evening prayers

In the evening, a short rule is read by the laity - a prayer for the night before going to bed:

Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of Truth, Who is everywhere and fills everything, Treasury of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Blessed, our souls.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (Three times)

Our Father, Who art in heaven! Hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as in heaven and on earth. Give us our daily bread today; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us; bewildering any answer, we offer this prayer as the Lord of sin: have mercy on us.

Glory: Lord, have mercy on us, we put our trust in Thee; do not be angry with us, remember our iniquities below, but look now as if you are merciful, and deliver us from our enemies; Thou art our God, and we are Thy people, all works by Thy hand, and we call on Thy name.

And now: Open the doors of Mercy to us, blessed Mother of God, hoping in Thee, let us not perish, but let us be delivered from troubles by Thee: Thou art the salvation of the Christian race.

Lord have mercy. (12 times)

Eternal God and the King of every creature, having made me sing even at this hour, forgive me the sins that I have done in this day by deed, word and thought, and cleanse, Lord, my humble soul from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit. For Yours is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and forever and forever and ever. Amen.

Good Tsar, good Mother, Most Pure and Blessed Mother of God Mary, pour out the mercy of Your Son and our God on my passionate soul and with Your prayers instruct me in good deeds, so that the rest of my life will pass without a blemish and I will find paradise with You, Virgin Mary, one Pure and Blessed.

Angel of Christ, my holy guardian and patron of my soul and body, forgive me all, the fir-tree of sinning today, and deliver me from all the wickedness of the enemy, but in no sin will I anger my God; but pray for me a sinful and unworthy slave, as if I were worthy, show the goodness and mercy of the All-Holy Trinity and the Mother of my Lord Jesus Christ and all the saints. Amen.

The chosen Governor is victorious, as if having got rid of the evil ones, thankfully we will write down Ti Thy servants, the Mother of God, but as if having an invincible power, from all troubles of freedom, let us call Ty; Rejoice, Unbrided Bride.

Glorious Ever-Virgin Mother of Christ God, bring our prayer to Your Son and our God, may our souls be saved by You.

I place all my hope in You, Mother of God, keep me under Your shelter.

Virgin Mother of God, do not despise me, a sinner, demanding Your help and Your intercession, my soul trusts in You, and have mercy on me.

Amen.

Interpretation of individual prayers

  • King of Heaven.

In prayer, the Holy Spirit is called the King, because He, as God the Father and God the Son, rules the world and reigns in it. He is a comforter and to this day comforts those who need it. He guides believers on the righteous path, which is why he is called the Spirit of Truth.

The petition is addressed to the three hypostases of the Holy Trinity. The angels of heaven sing a great song before the throne of God. God the Father is Holy God, God the Son is Holy Almighty. This conversion is due to the victory of the Son over the devil and the destruction of hell. During the prayer, a person asks for permission from sins, healing of spiritual infirmities for the sake of glorifying the Most Holy Trinity.

This is an appeal directly to the Almighty as to the Father, we stand before Him as children before our mother and father. We affirm the omnipotence of God and His power, we implore to control human spiritual forces and guide them on the true path, so that after death they will be honored to be in the Kingdom of Heaven.

He is the Good Spirit for every believer, ordained by God Himself. Therefore, praying to Him in the evenings is simply necessary. It is he who will warn against committing sins, will help to live holy and will patronize the soul and body.

In prayer, the danger of attacks by bodily enemies (people pushing them to commit sin) and incorporeal (spiritual passions) is emphasized.

The nuances of the evening rule

Most people have a question: is it possible to listen to Orthodox chants in an audio recording?

The Epistle of the Apostle Paul says that it doesn’t matter what a person does, the main thing is that any of his deeds be done for the glory of God.

Prayer should be started before going to bed. Before starting to read the rule, it is recommended to thank God for everything that He has been given for the whole day. You need to turn to Him with your mind and heart, realizing the meaning of each spoken word.

Advice! If the text is read in Church Slavonic, then you need to study its Russian translation.

In modern practice, the rule is supplemented by reading prayers for:

  • close and dear people
  • the living and the dead;
  • about enemies;
  • virtues and about the whole world.

In a dream, a person is especially vulnerable to the devil's army, he is visited by sinful thoughts, bad desires. Night in the Christian understanding is considered the time of rampant demons. A person can receive information that can seduce his body and lead his soul into sin. Demons are very insidious, they can send nightmares in a dream vision.

That is why believers pray every day before going to bed.

Advice! Even when all life circumstances turn out well, one should not forget about faith and the Heavenly Father, because human destinies are predetermined in Heaven from the very beginning. Therefore, it is necessary to turn to God before going to bed and the next day will definitely turn out better than the previous one.

  1. It is useful to listen to the singing of the elders of Optina Hermitage. This male monastic monastery is famous for miracle workers who could and can foresee human destinies. The need to serve the Almighty is transmitted through their prayer songs and sets them on the righteous path.
  2. The Church has a positive attitude towards watching Orthodox videos, but this material must be treated very carefully, and in the process of listening or watching, it is recommended to postpone secular activities.
  3. The clergy advise to include in the composition evening rule prayers of the Optina elders. Their texts have evolved over the centuries and each of their phrases carries the greatest wisdom that can explain the basics Orthodox faith and know their full depth.

Prayer appeal is the breath of the soul of an Orthodox person. He practically cannot control his sleep, and other life processes are also difficult to control. Therefore, prayer before going to bed is aimed at ensuring that the Creator participates in human life, otherwise He will not have the opportunity to help us.

Important! Offering a supplication before going to sleep is an acquisition Orthodox Christian protection and support. In addition to their own protection, mothers beg God to protect their children and send them mercy.

The evening rule - prayers for the future - is an appeal to God with a request to protect from the fears and doubts that visit a person before going to bed, because he is the link between the world of dreams and reality.

Brief evening prayer rule

According to the Orthodox tradition, evening prayers, like morning prayers, must be performed daily and in accordance with a special Prayer Rule. But today, in times of rapid change, believers for the most part do not have the opportunity to read the complete set of prayers. Therefore, it is allowed to read a short prayer rule.

For evening prayers, as a rule, a person has more time, because having finished with daytime worries, he can devote enough time for personal communication with the Lord.

But it is also worth recognizing that many people are not even aware of the existence of a prayer for sleep in the future. Although at certain moments in their lives they, without realizing it to the end, remember her and resort to her help:

For a long time of the existence of Orthodoxy, Christians themselves could be convinced that evening prayer helps a person calm down and look at the current situation. life situation from the outside, thereby understanding the ways to solve it. The Almighty Himself through prayer helps in realizing this.

There is no such person on earth who at least once would not have experienced a terrible dream or a nightmare, sacredly believing after that only in something bad. Dream books also come to the rescue - and as a result, the one who sees the dream begins to be afraid and is ready to do anything so that the prediction does not come true in reality.

Sleep makes a person more vulnerable, because through his consciousness his fears and doubts come out, which means that all this can materialize. And it is at such moments that you need:

  • understand and believe that everything seen is just a dream;
  • fill your life with positivity;
  • feel safe and deal with anxiety through prayer.

It is often enough to read “Our Father” - and all negative thoughts will recede, and the dream itself will become less scary and symbolic. If bad dreams are frequent guests in your home, then it is advisable to read the prayer immediately before going to bed. Then its benefits will be undeniable, because the spiritual state improves and the physical, thereby a person finds harmony, which gives peace and tranquility.

Often, restless dreams can be seen by young children. There are many reasons for this. In such cases, the child cannot yet explain everything that happens to him, and therefore parents should come to the rescue - read the prayer for sleep to those who are coming for him. Here, when reading, a very important factor is the tone of voice. As a rule, the mother reads the prayer to the kids, since they perceive only her voice calmly.

When the child grows up, you can teach him to repeat the evening prayer after his mother, while explaining its true meaning. Then he will say the words of the prayer on his own - and this will help him to be more calm and feel completely safe, and also guarantee a sound sleep.

Quite often, mothers tend to take dreams very seriously until they are convinced that any danger in reality has passed. In such cases, you need to turn to prayers that mention:

  • Cyprian Hieromartyr;
  • Saint Cyprian and Saint Ustinia.

These are a kind of prayer-amulets, which are a petition to God for children, help to avoid the influence of evil forces and save peace of mind. Children can simply listen to such prayers.

If the prophetic dream that the baby has had is not interpreted very pleasantly, and the prayer for the dream of the future does not bring peace, you should go to the temple and put two candles at the icon of the Mother of God for health:

The third - at the icon of All Saints.

For a peaceful children's sleep, the following evening prayers are often read:

When reading prayers, you need to remember one thing important rule: in order for them to have a positive effect, one should not just repeat them mechanically, but concentrate, because this is personal communication with God.

Evening rule of Optina Pustyn

Particularly reverent to the rule of evening prayer are in Optina Hermitage - monastery Russian Orthodox Church, which is located in Kaluga region(Russia).

Temple prayer rules:

  • read the evening prayers according to the prayer book;
  • pay close attention to the meaning of each word;
  • use a rosary in church, and sometimes at home, at the very beginning of hostile thoughts;
  • read every day a chapter from the Gospel, the Apostolic Epistles and Acts;
  • if you want a close conversation with God, read a kathisma or akathist to the Sweetest Jesus, the Mother of God.

Evening Prayer Rule of the Optina Elders

There is also a set of rules for reading prayers for sleep from the Optina elders, which contain all the weaknesses of a person’s physical and mental health:

  • the prayer rule should be in force (sick people, women with small children);
  • let the prayer be short, but always read daily;
  • moderation is better than excess;
  • do not perceive prayer as a duty;
  • it is better to discuss the prayer rule with a spiritual father or with a priest;
  • reasoning and advice Main way in prayer to the Lord.
