Probably nothing warms the soul of the hostess so much as beautiful things made with their own hands. They say with all their appearance: “What a clever girl you are! And a needlewoman! And what is the first thing that catches your eye in the apartment? Of course the curtains. And to make them really beautiful and of high quality, you need to know some subtleties. Moreover, knowing these subtleties does not guarantee that the curtains will fit perfectly into the interior. Therefore, I decided to do a sort of mini-study and collect in it everything that can be useful in preparation for tailoring and directly when sewing curtains.

Having started collecting material, I understand that it is impossible to manage here with one post. Therefore, I begin to spread a series of articles under common name. All images are clickable.

In the first part:

  • what is it called
  • types of curtains
  • styles

And I want to immediately note this feature: the type and style of curtains do not always match. For example, you can sew Roman curtains in ethnic style or Austrian curtains in Provence style.

First, let's define the style, it consists of several components: the size and shape of the window, general style interior, your taste preferences. To understand all this, you need to know some concepts.

CURTAIN in Wikipedia - the general name of household functional and decorative window curtains made of fabric materials. Curtain (fr. store) in a particular case - a window curtain, moved apart to the sides or lifted up.

PORTIER(from French Portiere, derived from Porte - "door") in Wiktionary - port-tier-ra. 1. curtain (usually heavy fabric) on doors or windows, this term is used to refer to thick, heavy (lined) curtains.

CURTAIN(from German Gardine), according to the Yandex Dictionary - a curtain of heavy fabric for an alcove niche, etc., and Wikipedia believes that - there is a non-compliant literary language the idea that the curtain is a massive stick on which the curtain is hung. A curtain (Dutch. Gordijne) is actually a soft curtain made of thin transparent fabric (tulle, organza, veil), covering the window completely or partially.

All curtains consist of elements that form one or another style.

(from French Lambrequin - decoration) - decoration in the form of drapery, which is placed in front of curtains or soft curtains and gives the window a decorative completeness, has many types and subspecies, is soft and hard;

directly a curtain or curtain placed behind a lambrequin;

A part made of fabric or other material, for fixing curtains or curtains in the required position, can be of several types;

A method of processing the back of a curtain or lambrequin, to give best view, to hide raw cuts, as well as for color (decorative) support of some interior elements;

TYPES OF CURTAINS:

All species reflect the style of the era and the place of their origin.

- they are a plain fabric, gathered in uniform vertical folds along the entire length, creating a unique ceremonial atmosphere, they are installed on a rail cornice or on a cornice with a special lifting mechanism.

- just like French ones, they are horizontal folds of fabric collected along the bottom edge of the canvas. The curtain fabric can be fixed in the assembled state, or hang in the loose state. In these curtains, cords and special loops are sewn on the wrong side of the fabric, with the help of which beautiful scallops are obtained when pulled together and soft folds along the bottom of the curtain when loose. An Austrian curtain made of dense fabric will create a cozy classic atmosphere, and a light transparent fabric will create a romantic one. In addition, the Austrian curtain can hang both independently and with a lambrequin. With all the luxury, the curtains take up little space, so they are suitable for rooms with limited space. For installation, a special rail cornice with a device for attaching cords is used.

the curtains are distinguished by their original fastening - the fabric sheet does not move apart completely, and the tiebacks are in a higher position. The curtains are gracefully supported diagonally by cords that are attached to the ends of the cornice and create a beautiful silhouette of the window. This type of curtain looks good in not wide window openings and visually increases the height of the window. For Italian curtains use a standard cornice with a rail or a curved cornice that will perfectly emphasize the arched shape of the window.

Roman curtains - their original purpose - to protect the room from prying eyes and unwanted light. The design of Roman curtains consists of horizontal folds, assembled by means of hard rails sewn in or fixed on the inside, moving with the help of cords and rings sewn onto the fabric. Curtains are universal and can be an element of the interior, decorated in any style.

crossed curtains, formed from two panels, crossed along the upper edge and attached to opposite sides window.

Roll (roller) curtains - are wound on a roller fixed at the top of the window. Raising and lowering roller blinds is controlled by a spring mechanism that fixes the curtain in the open and closed position, or a rotary-chain mechanism that allows you to raise or lower the curtain fabric to the desired level. Can be with the left-hand and right-hand control mechanism. The advantage of these curtains is the possibility of using fabrics with dust-repellent impregnation and varying degrees of light transmission. The fabric can be easily replaced without changing the mechanism itself. Curtains can be used on their own, making the main accent or used as functional element in combination with curtains or tulle.

Curtains pleated- the simplest of all existing curtains, but no less functional. They optimally distribute the light flux and combine, on the one hand, the clarity of the lines, and on the other hand, the warmth of the fabric. With the help of side control, they are easily folded like an accordion to the desired position. The use of dirt-repellent and sun-protective fabrics allows them to be placed in unfavorable ordinary curtains places, in the bathroom or in the garage, they are indispensable for the design of inclined and skylights, on windows non-standard shape(arched, triangular), because due to their plasticity they repeat the shape of the window opening.

Japanese curtains - several solid, absolutely even canvases moving to the side, like a screen. Top and bottom - rigid inserts that do not allow them to fold. They differ from other types of window decoration in minimalism, restraint and conciseness, they are best suited for spacious rooms with large windows. They can also be used as a partition screen that divides the room into several zones. Another plus is that such a curtain almost does not collect dust. Any fabric is used.

Panel (screen) curtains, resemble a screen and look very stylish and concise. Any fabric is stretched on special frame fasteners, and the panels themselves can easily move in the plane of the window, fixing in any desired position. Also, this mechanism can be used not only for window decoration, but also for creating decorative partitions in the room. For these curtains, only natural materials are used - hemp fabric made from trunks herbaceous plants, bamboo stalks, cotton and silk fabrics with the inclusion of fibers obtained from palm leaves as an accent.

Curtains on eyelets and hinges Soft, straight creases created with eyelets are a great way to show off the beauty of a fabric.

curtains - universal in use, light and practical, they are bamboo sticks sewn together. Cord control system: the curtain smoothly "wave after wave" unfolds down and assembles in a similar manner.

CURTAIN STYLE:

- involves the use of colorful national motifs of Arabs, Scandinavians, Indians, Africans, Japanese and other peoples, which are reflected in the interior. Ethnic style is divided into many segments.

East style- symbiosis of two oriental cultures: Arab and Asian, bright, multi-colored fabrics of rich, deep colors, richly embroidered with beads, shiny beads and cords. Oriental flavor will add light chiffon fabrics combined with heavy cords and tassels.

Japanese style- minimalism, conciseness, restraint. Curtains can take the form of partitions, panels and screens. They can give a minimalist home a discreet, uncluttered look. It is very easy to care for such curtains, and their choice of possible colors is very large.

Scandinavian style- only light colors. real curtains in scandinavian style have a simple cut and natural color, are sewn from thin linen, translucent cotton, silk, muslin, muslin, any light fabrics of satin and damask weave. They do not take up living space and soften the geometric shapes.

RURAL (RUSSIAN)- includes several directions united by natural fabrics, memories of summer and a bias towards nature.

- cosy country style, which is characterized by cheerful colors, it is easy to emphasize using linen or any other coarse fabric with a check pattern, polka dots or natural colors. You can add old buttons, stripes, seams, ribbons from natural materials. Curtains in country style have a light style, their movement will evoke the idea of a pleasant smell of freshly cut grass and a vacation ... it is supposed to use two panels that can have tiebacks and be combined with a lambrequin. The style allows you to decorate windows with homespun cloth or mesh. The curtains created using the patchwork patchwork technique look original.

- combines the calm and soft colors of the Mediterranean nature: white, pistachio, blue, wheat, pink, lavender. All pastel colors have a calming effect, give a feeling of summer warmth and fresh field air. General trends- maximum lightness, simplicity, lack of pretentious details and a certain color scheme. The fabric used is light, airy (veil, organza and tulle), because these curtains should give the impression of air entering the room.

- classic curtains consist of tulle and curtains, if you choose interesting fabric and show a little imagination, you can achieve interesting effects. Considering the purpose and origin of this style, silk, velvet, taffeta and lined fabrics are used for curtains. Tiebacks, brushes, lambrequins and decorative cords are used here. With the help of beautiful drapery, curtains radiate solemnity and self-sufficiency. It also includes several subspecies that can not be used in every room, but only with high ceilings.

French- heavy, dense fabrics - velvet and velor, dark, saturated colors, large floral and floral ornaments. Designed to emphasize the luxury of royal chambers, theaters and rich mansions. This style must be accompanied by rich antique furniture.

Palace style- This style was most popular back in the 17th century. Then it was used to decorate palaces and houses of other nobility. Today, this style has also retained its popularity; it differs from the French only in the use of decor and “gold-like” finishes.

- the style is characterized by the use of lambrequins of a complex and rigid design, which are decorated with appliqué or embroidery in the form of fantastic flowers and leaves, and luxurious golden tassels that enhance the splendor of the composition. Fabrics are used dense, saturated colors, matte or with a satin sheen.

TO classic style can also be attributed English, Austrian, Roman- so named according to the method of manufacturing and fastening curtains and the surroundings corresponding to the style.

MODERN (MODERN)- well suited for those who are accustomed to surround themselves with bright colors and bold combinations. But there is a small hitch. Here you need to think through every detail to create a holistic image. If you cannot choose the shape, fabric, accessories and color of the curtains in accordance with your interior, then no matter how skillfully the curtains are made, they will look ridiculous.

- the style is the most daring, since it is customary to use a simple cut, and the effect is achieved through fabrics with a non-standard texture and decoration details.

VINTAGE (RETRO)- things from the attic have found a second life: the furniture is restored with the preservation of obvious traces of time: cracks, scuffs, chips, scratches. Velvet, old-fashioned, reminiscent of shots from an old film of the last century, curtains are pulled out of the chests and knocked out from the dust. Treated with braid with bombs or tassels.

- a combination of incongruous - the essence of this style. If you manage to combine two different style- the uniqueness of the interior is guaranteed. The rule here is such splendor multiplied by minimalism, pretentiousness is combined only with simplicity. Eclectic style, able to set the tone for the design of the entire room. If you are stuffed with ideas like a magic pot of porridge, then it is the eclectic style that will give space for activity. Any decor, in any combination - only the ability to feel the line beyond which bad taste begins can serve as a limitation.

I hope this information gives food for thought and when the next post comes out, you will already have an idea of what kind of curtains and in what style you want to sew. Next:

The materials are collected from open sources, systematized and described by Angelina Vine.

Step-by-step instructions for sewing curtains for the living room

At first, it may seem to you that it is very easy and simple. In fact, there is nothing particularly complicated about this. You just need to remember the technology and stick to it established sequence. Curtains with braid are most often hung in living rooms, so the order of sewing just such curtains will be considered below. Does not matter significant differences there are no other types in the sequence of sewing curtains.

Calculate first right amount material. To do this, measure the distance between the cornice and the floor, as well as the length of the cornice. If you want to sew long curtains, add an additional 10 cm of hemming allowance to the length. Choose the width according to your personal preference. If you want to get a draped curtain, multiply the length of the cornice by 3. For example, if you have a cornice 2.5 m long, you will need to purchase 7.5 m of material. If you don’t need a lot of folds, multiply by 2-2.5. Add 6 cm to the width for the side hem. If you are sewing a curtain with two sheets, add another 2 cm of seam allowance.

The scheme of hemming the bottom of the curtains: 1.2 - the sequence of bending the fabric.

Double-fold the edges on the sides. First you need to bend 1 cm, then 2 cm, and after that sew on sewing machine. Hem the bottom edge of the curtain as well, bending it first 3 cm, and then 5 cm inward. The upper edge must be folded inward by about 3 cm, and then ironed. On the wrong side, a decorative braid is pinned to this edge. Use pins for fastening. About 1 cm should be retreated from the top fold. It is important to choose the correct length of the braid. Usually the product is taken 5-6 cm longer than the canvas itself. Pull the ends of the laces from the inside of the braid and tie, then tuck the allowance of the braid inward.

The same operations are performed with the second edge of the braid. Only laces in this case no need to link. This edge will be outer. The braid is attached along its lower and upper edges to the canvas. Sew on the folded edges of the product. The ends of the laces from the outer edge do not need to be sewn.

In conclusion, you just have to form the folds of the curtains. To do this, they must be pulled together with laces and tied. The braid itself has loops. Hooks are inserted into them at an equal distance from each other. The more creases you want, the more crochet hooks you will need. On this beautiful curtains for the living room are ready.

Bedroom curtain sewing guide

Pattern of curtains "with a scallop".

In the bedroom, curtains made of dense material that retard the sun's color are best suited. Choose the material you want in terms of color and decor and start the sewing process.

First you need to take measurements and cut a piece of material of a suitable length. Measure the distance between the cornice and the floor, if you want to get long curtains, add 10-15 cm on each side in width and 25-30 cm in length. Before cutting the fabric, double-check everything carefully to avoid further difficulties and mistakes.

In professional workshops, the material is marked out on specially designed tables. At home, as a rule, you have to be content with the floor. Marking is carried out using a special centimeter. Lines are drawn using a long ruler or bar and a bar of soap or tailor's chalk.

Before you start sewing seams, iron the material with an iron. This will make further work more convenient. Always keep the edges of the fabric in sight. Stitch the necessary seams.

Take another piece of material and cut 2 strips of 15 cm long and 15 cm wide from it. To be more sure, make a margin of 2.5 cm. Fold the cut pieces in half lengthwise and sew. These will be grips and decorative tape. After that, cut off another strip, but already 21 cm long. It must also be folded 2 times in length, stitched and turned inside out, and then cut into 3 identical parts 7 cm long.

Fold up the raw edges of each of these strips and sew them to your curtain as decorative loops. Place one in the center, and the remaining 2 on the sides, at a distance of 2.5 cm from the edges.

Pass the decorative ribbon through the loops. Its ends must be sewn to the side parts of the curtain. Move the curtains and secure the drapery with a hook and then hook or Velcro to the wall.

The most common problem is the lack sewing machine. Although the unit is useful, no one usually wants to buy it for the sake of tailoring curtains alone.

There is a great alternative, namely gluing. A special adhesive tape is used. It is sold in sewing stores.

Measure this adhesive tape and cut it into pieces according to the width and length of the edges of the curtain. Tuck the ribbon into the seam and iron as directed. Very fast, convenient and simple. The use of such tapes eliminates the need to work with a sewing machine.

Today in choice matching curtains there is no problem for your home. You can buy any model, color; a variety of fabric types also gives room for imagination. But why not take the opportunity to sew such a product yourself? Roller blinds are very easy to make and can add a touch of class and style to any room, from the kitchen to the living room.

Features of curtains and suitable fabrics

Designers say that blinds are not the most the best way for residential areas, they are more suitable for office. These devices are being replaced by roller blinds, which are just as convenient to use, but at the same time cozy, looking at home. They are very easy to sew, and even easier to install.

Many people confuse roller blinds with Roman blinds, and even consider them the same. Yes, these products have a lot in common as in appearance, and in principle of fastening on the surface and the manufacturing process. Nevertheless, there is a significant difference between Roman and roller blinds. It consists in the following: in the first product, folding is ensured by sewn-in trims, according to the principle of an accordion; the second type of curtains is rolled up, there are no slats along the length of the curtain, which provide rigidity.

Installation of such a curtain can be done in three ways:

  • on the wall;
  • above the window
  • on the frame.

It is especially easy to fix such a curtain on plastic window. Cassettes mounted on the frame do not interfere with work casement, and the U-shaped guide holds the fabric tightly, keeping it in a taut position.

The same guides can be on roller blinds attached to the wall. This installation option provides protection against drafts. The use of opaque materials creates the effect of complete blackout.

Roller blind: front and back view

Almost all materials can be used for roller blinds, but it is better to purchase a special fabric impregnated with antistatic or antibacterial composition. This is especially true for products that will be used in the kitchen or bathroom. According to the degree of transparency, these fabrics can be:

  • transparent;
  • translucent;
  • darkening.

The range of patterns and colors is unlimited.

The most popular roller blind fabric is polyester. Impregnation with antistatic prevents sticking of polyester to the canvas. You can choose material with a metallic tint or a soft pearly sheen.

For tailoring roller blinds, you can use any fabric

Teflon coated sheets are very easy to maintain due to their dirt and water repellency. There are also fabrics with fire protection.

Note! Real, high-quality impregnations that form on the fabric protective layer completely harmless to the body. In order not to buy a fake, ask the seller for the appropriate hygiene certificates.

Tailoring

In our master class, we will tell you how to sew a simple roller blind. This option does not require you high costs and special skills in tailoring.

Necessary materials

  • fabric cuts different kind or colors for the face and the wrong side - 2 pcs.
  • Wooden bars equal to the width of the window frame - 2 pcs. (for fastening the curtain and its weighting).
  • Scissors.
  • centimeter or ruler.
  • Cord.
  • Ring screws - 5 pcs.
  • Hook screws - 3 pcs.
  • Threads, needles, sewing machine.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Measure your window frame. According to the calculations obtained from the prepared fabric, cut out two segments with the desired dimensions. Allow for seam allowances: 10 cm in length and 3 cm in width.

  7. Thread the cords into the rings on the fastening bar. Remember: a longer cord must be tied to a ring located farther from the common side ring.

Curtains - necessary element apartment decor.   • the cloth;
  • tape for curtains;
  • threads in color.

Sewing such simple curtains is almost no different from sewing tulle.

Walkthrough:

  1. Fabrics are recommended to take twice the width of the window opening. If you only need one curtain, then you can use the tulle sewing guide, as it will not be any different. If you need two curtains, then each in width will correspond to the width of the window. Thus, together they will create required amount folds and the right size.
  2. Measure the desired values on the fabric, you can do it in the same way as with tulle, and then simply cut the resulting fabric lengthwise into two curtains.
  3. Then follow the instructions for sewing tulle. You will have to go through all the steps twice, as you should get not one curtain, but two of the same.

Advice! Do not rush to get rid of the pieces of fabric remaining after sewing. They can come in very handy when creating decorative elements, both for curtains and just for the home.

Roman curtains

Before you need to take measurements from the windows as accurately as possible, as it is assumed that they will close them tightly and completely.

You will need:

  • dense or coarse fabric;
  • threads in color;
  • special cornice for Roman curtains.

Walkthrough:

Roman sewing is one of the easiest, they also do not need patterns.

  1. Mark and draw the curtain on the fabric, according to the size of the window. The fabric for such curtains is usually taken dense and rough and not slippery, so the process will be facilitated. To the drawn curtain, add 5 cm for allowances on the sides, and 12 cm from the bottom.
  2. Roll up with an iron on all sides of the fabric and stitch along the edges.
  3. Now you only need to put the curtain on a special fixture.

Blinds

Another stylish and easy-to-tailor option for curtains. For them, you can choose almost any dense fabric. It is better to avoid drawings, because because of the sun, it can quickly fade and the curtains will lose their original appearance.

You will need:

  • special devices for vertical blinds;
  • the cloth;
  • wooden panels;
  • threads in color.

Walkthrough:

  1. First you need to determine the length, width and number of lamellae. Standard values are: 127 - 89 mm.

  3. Fold each with the right side inward and start the lines. Turn out.
  4. Iron the resulting slats with a steam iron.
  5. Put them on the guides. Tidy up your vertical blind system.

The advantage of self-tailoring blinds is that for their manufacture on the market they offer a lot of different materials and devices, so that you can easily realize any of your ideas.

Advice! It is better to do any curtain patterns before buying fabric, since only after that you will be able to determine as accurately as possible how much you need it.

As a result, you will get a very realistic and beautiful flower.

How to take measurements correctly

In order for your product to turn out to be even, neat and beautiful, use the following tips for the correct measurement of windows:

  • When measuring the height from floor to ceiling, do this in at least two places (depending on the width of the window), as the ceiling or floor may be crooked. In the event that the values \u200b\u200bare different, it is necessary to make a smooth bevel during cutting to the side that is smaller in height.
  • Make all measurements as accurately and carefully as any mistake can affect the final result of the product.
  • Measure the width of the window from one end of the curtain to the other, that is, the entire perimeter, which the curtain will have to close in the future.
  • When measuring, you do not need to add allowances! This is done during the construction of patterns!

  • On the reverse side of the fabric, draw a pattern for the product with double seam allowances - for a double turn of the edge.

  • Cut out the workpiece by cutting off the factory edges - they tighten the fabric.
  • Smooth out the product with an iron - even fabric is easier to handle than wrinkled and wrinkled fabrics. In addition, this way you reduce the likelihood of sewing uneven side seams.
  • Roll up 1 side allowance and iron.

  • Iron the finished edge with an iron.

  • Immediately after the iron, walk along the edge with a cold object - a piece of glass, for example - this action will further smooth the fabric after machine stitching.

At this stage, the product can already be used by hanging it with special clips or clothespins. If you want to fasten the curtain with hooks, sew a curtain tape with ready-made slots on the top of the product.

To sew Roman curtains, you will need materials such as adhesive tape, 7-8 rods of wood, metal, about 3 centimeters shorter than the width of the product, plastic rings- 3 for each pin, 3 long identical cords, 2 straps - for hanging and weighting, hooks, nails.

  • You need to sew a Roman-style curtain, starting with cutting. Measure your window opening and add seam allowances to get the width of the piece. The length will be equal to the length of the window or below the window sill by 5-10 centimeters.

  • You can use the following table to determine the number of folds and the distance between them, guided by the future length of the item.

  • Cut the product according to the finished parameters. With a simple pencil or soap, mark the insertion points for the pins and rings.
  • Cut out the piece of fabric. Finish the edges of the curtains in the same way as in the previous master class.
  • Fix a wooden cornice in the window opening or above it - depending on how you want to decorate the window.
  • Attach Velcro tape to the finished bar. Attach the second sticky part to the top edge of the curtain so you can easily remove the items for washing.

  • Tuck and stitch the bottom of the curtain, forming a loop into which you need to insert the weighting rail.
  • From the wrong side of the product, sew a wide braid at the levels where the gathering twigs will be.
  • Sew 3 rings to each braid. They need to be fastened so that all the rings of the same row are clearly above each other.

  • Stick the curtain to the beam with adhesive tape. Starting with the top ring, thread 1 cord through each of the rings - you should have 3 of them. Secure the cords by tying them in knots on the bottom rings.

  • Bring all the laces to 1 side of the curtain, passing through the top fasteners.

The curtain should hang in a fully extended state, only then you can tie a knot of 3 cords at the top. Attach the lifting mechanism to window frame or in an opening, wind the cord around it and tie the knot again. Cut off the uneven ends of the cord. With it, you will adjust the height of the rise and the size of the folds of the Roman blind.

  • After each action, check the products for creases, bruises and get rid of them with an iron. It is possible to sew with wrinkled material, but this increases the chance of skewed seams and fabric.
