Making a simple do-it-yourself copy machine at first glance seems like an easy task. There are many photos on the web finished structures, which impress with their originality and ease of manufacture. Many are eager to do something similar. But when the homemade copy machine is assembled, it turns out that not everything is so smooth.

Copy machines come with milling and turning. In terms of prevalence, the first place is occupied by milling and copying machines. They are more functional and allow you to get not only round copies, but also copies of an arbitrary shape. They will be discussed in this article.

The biggest trouble of milling copy machine assembled at home is backlash and vibration. Many home craftsmen complain that when copying a sample, the resulting product has many inconsistencies and flaws that appeared when the direction of the forming cutter changed and the support structure trembled. In addition, distortion and deflection of the workpiece associated with an increase in internal stress due to wood sampling are added. Therefore, when making a copy machine, it is impossible to immediately avoid all the shortcomings. As a rule, after assembly, it is necessary to bring the structure to acceptable parameters for some more time.

In any case, it is better to make a home-made copy machine not universal, but narrow-profile, that is, optimized for the manufacture of specific products that you need. For example, to efficiently produce wooden part guns, a propeller screw and voluminous text, we need different technical solutions, and if they are combined in one machine, then there may be side effects which will be difficult to correct. Therefore, it is more practical to assemble machines for some a specific task. This approach will avoid many difficulties and unnecessary costs.

Another important factor is the size of the machine. The larger the workpiece you plan to process, the more massive the design should be. Vibrations transmitted from the cutter drive must be absorbed by the mass of the supporting structure of the machine. And the guide axles must not only withstand the load, but also have a margin of safety so that they do not bend. At independent design milling and copying machine optimal parameters for a smooth run, the cutters are selected empirically.

The principle of operation of the milling and copying machine is as follows: a milling cutter for sampling wood and a probe are installed on the movable frame, which is driven along the original. The frame drops to wooden blank, and the excess wood is removed with a milling cutter. The whole point of design is to ensure the simultaneous movement of the cutter and probe in three planes, as well as rotation around the transverse axis. To do this, use metal guides or wooden hinge systems. Wood absorbs vibrations better, is easier to process and has a lower cost. The video at the bottom of the page shows a homemade copy machine for creating flat-relief images and three-dimensional inscriptions with in a non-standard way movement in space. Moreover, in this design, a twofold reduction in scale is provided. You can download the drawings of the milling and copying machine in one archive at the bottom of the page.

Now it will not be difficult to make a copy, for example, of a three-dimensional inscription. You can also make a template for creating 3D text yourself. To do this, you will need a printed sketch, a couple of cardboard sheets, glue and a stationery knife. We glue the sketch sheet and cardboard together so that the paper does not wrinkle. After drying, with the tip of a clerical knife, carefully cut out the letters exactly according to the sketch. A template height of 2 mm is usually sufficient to keep the stylus from slipping.

The wood copy-milling machine is a universal equipment designed for copying products in two- and three-dimensional format. This unit can copy ready product two-dimensional type, as well as using special copiers and three-dimensional models.

In addition, the technique is often used to engrave profiles and a variety of decorative elements. Also, a copy-milling machine for wood can be “entrusted” with simple traditional milling work, with which it is able to cope on a par with traditional milling machines.

This technique is inherently unique, because with its rather primitive device, it is able to copy quite complex structures, including very thin ones. manual work.

Such machines can be found on the most different enterprises, including at large industrial facilities of large-scale production.

The copy-milling unit specializes in milling curved parts.

This is done by copying the template.

Do-it-yourself copying and milling machine for wood

It is the templates that make it possible to make the process as accurate as possible, nullifying manual work and, accordingly, the human factor. This feature of the technique acts as a guarantee that the parts received will be identical, and their shape will match.

In this case, the master can use either one template for all parts, or use already made parts as a template.

In fact, each part produced on such equipment can act as a sample, which confirms the amazing accuracy of the technique.

If this is not enough for you, you can improve the accuracy parameter of your machine.

To do this, you should equip it with a special copying device. It is called a pantograph and is intended for extremely accurate transmission of the movement of the copying head to the main device that processes the workpiece. If the template has a lot of “thin” details, it makes sense to select a copy-milling machine for wood, which has a pantograph as an option.

Design features

This unit allows you to process profiles or relief.

Processing is carried out with a special tool made of hard alloys. It's about cutters. The cutters completely repeat the movements of the copier - a device that reproduces the contours of the template. This setting device is equipped with a mechanical or other connection with a tracking system responsible for the trajectory of the tool.

What can perform the functions of a copier for such a machine?

This can be a 3D or flat sample, a contour drawing, or a reference model. A special probe, in fact, traces the contours of the workpiece, which are transferred to the tool. In some modern units, instead of a probe, a photocell can be used, which is characterized by increased accuracy.

Pantograph - important element copy-milling machine for wood.

Its design includes a special guide pin. It moves along the copier, accurately capturing any geometric features of the figure. In this case, the proportions of the pantograph arms determine the relative size of the final result.

Classification of copy-milling machines

Today it is possible to divide all the machines on the market according to many parameters.

By type of drive, the following units can be distinguished:

  • Copiers with two- or three-dimensional pantograph;
  • The universal unit placed on a rotary sleeve;
  • Equipment equipped with a round or rectangular table;
  • Copiers with electric, hydraulic or mechanical feed.
  • photocopier units.

There are also such units that differ from each other in the level of automation:

  • Manual table type machine with mechanical clamp.
  • Automatic copy-milling machine equipped with a pneumatic clamp.
  • Stationary automated machine with pneumatic clamping and three-spindle nozzle.

findings

Copy-milling machines occupy an honorable place in the woodworking industry.

Without them, manufacturing a part with a complex relief would take a lot of time. With the advent of such technology, labor productivity on an enterprise scale increases tenfold.

That is why buying such a machine can be a very valuable investment for the craftsman.

The copier consists of a copier mounted on the movable part of the device, along which the roller of the leash bracket slides from below, motionlessly mounted on the vertical guides of the machine.

The copier works as follows. Both cavities communicate with each other, for which a hole is made in the piston. The rod of the hydraulic cylinder is t l tr fastening, and the cylinder tzd 1 is blocked.

Copiers are either made as attachments to existing machines (turning, milling, etc.), or organically built into them and form copy machines or semi-automatic machines.

The copier can be mechanical, electromechanical, hydraulic, and the rotation of the spindle unit, the table is one or two-index.

Copiers can also be installed on horizontal milling machines.

A copier (Fig. 73) is used to process shaped surfaces with a fairly high accuracy.

The copier of this machine works according to the inductive method.

Template copiers can achieve accuracy up to 0.02 mm.

Very often there is a need to make an exact copy of a certain part from various materials. In production conditions, a special copying machine for wood and metal is used for this. This type of device is very easy to make yourself using simple materials. The advantage of such a copy-milling machine is its high productivity. If you do everything right in a short period of time, you can get a lot of quality parts that will not differ in any way from the original sample.

General description of equipment

The purpose of copy-milling machines for wood is the processing of various parts both in volume and in the plane. Their principle of operation is somewhat similar to units with. If samples of wood are processed, then with the help of milling machines of this type, the following can be achieved:

  • reproduce any ornaments;
  • put the desired inscription on the surface of the workpiece;
  • to engrave shaped profiles;
  • obtain complex volumetric blanks with multiple small details, which are placed in different planes.

The milling and copying unit, which works with wooden parts, is most often used for the production of furniture. It helps to create all the necessary decorative elements, which is difficult to achieve in another way.

Features of the unit

A milling machine for metal or wood works using the following rules:

  • a milling cutter acts as a cutting element in this type of equipment. It creates the desired contour or volumetric elements in accordance with the established program task;
  • between the cutting element and the tracking device is another connecting element. This is a supply and control system, which can be mechanical (used in the simplest units that process wood), hydraulic or pneumatic;
  • as a copier, a specially created template, contour drawing or already finished part. CNC copy-milling machines do not need such samples, so they are considered universal. These units work thanks to numerical commands that are set by the user through a special interface.
  • blanks made of any materials - wood, metal, plastic, etc. can act as a template.

Varieties of milling machines with copy function

Copiers can have different drives. On this basis, this equipment is divided into:

  • units where there is a pantograph. Allows you to copy at the desired scale. The equipment where the pantograph is installed can provide processing of parts in several directions. The structure of this unit also includes the axis of rotation. The pantograph provides the desired processing scale due to a certain ratio of distances between these elements;
  • copiers that are equipped with a working mechanism mounted on a rotary rail;
  • devices with one or multiple spindles that have rotary tables different size and forms;
  • units with different scheme feed - mechanical, hydraulic, electric;
  • photocopier installations.

Depending on the degree of automation of all operations and the method of fixation, this equipment can be:

  • desktop, where the fixing of the workpiece occurs mechanically;
  • stationary, where parts are fixed using pneumatic clamps;
  • stationary with and three-spindle head.

Do-it-yourself copy machine for a router

The design of a homemade machine

A do-it-yourself wood milling machine will consist of the following structural elements:

  • a work surface that fits in size;
  • supporting frame, which will ensure the stability of the unit during operation;
  • node required to install cutters.

In the manufacture of this homemade product, it must be borne in mind that the milling head used must be equipped with a transmission mechanism, which must have an electric motor. This will provide the unit with several modes of operation at different speeds.

A homemade copy machine does not have precise control, which leads to a decrease in the quality of parts made with it. All the shortcomings are especially pronounced when changing the direction of the cutter or during the active operation of the unit, which is accompanied by vibration in the entire plane of the structure. Eliminating these defects is almost impossible. Therefore, it is recommended to create narrow-profile units that are aimed at processing only some of the parts.

Also, during the manufacture of a home-made copy machine, you should pay attention to the weight and dimensions of the workpieces. The larger they are, the more massive the supporting frame of the equipment should be. This will absorb all the resulting vibrations and provide a sufficient margin of safety, which will make the created do-it-yourself machine durable and reliable.

In order for the processing of wood parts to take place efficiently, care should be taken to ensure sufficient engine power. If it is 150-220 W, then it will not be difficult to provide the desired speed of rotation of the cutter.

It is also necessary not to forget that the assembly that connects the cutter to the copying probe must be strong and reliable. It is very important that their plane and the surface of the desktop completely coincide. As a result, the created structure is rigidly mounted on the supporting frame. Also, it should move freely on the working surface in all the right directions.

Using these tips, it is very easy to create a copy machine with your own hands. But we should not forget that its scope is limited. If processing is required different type and size, it is better to purchase universal equipment that is factory-made.

The copy-milling machine for wood is designed to create products according to a given pattern. With the help of such devices, flat-relief, volumetric or sculptural carving is carried out. If it is not possible to purchase a factory model, then you can always make a machine with your own hands.

Classification of copy-milling machines

According to the degree of automation, three groups of copy-milling machines for wood are distinguished:

  • manual (desktop):
  • stationary;
  • automatic.

On the devices of the first group, the workpiece is fixed mechanically. The design of milling machines of the second and third categories provides for the presence of pneumatic clamps that hold the product. This allows you to work with aluminum.

The principle of operation of the device

Copy-milling machines for wood are designed for processing flat and voluminous parts. With the help of such devices, ornaments and inscriptions, shaped profiles, complex patterns on workpieces with faces in different planes are created.

There are models of CNC milling machines that process curved parts using the pattern copying method. Through the use of these devices, possible creation a large number details complex shape and the same size.

These machines are mainly used in furniture production to create decorative elements of complex shape.

In addition to furniture, decor items, architectural elements (bas-reliefs, friezes), souvenirs, wooden details weapons, handles garden tools. Since all these products differ in shape and size, each of them requires milling machines of a certain design to create them. But regardless of the layout, all devices work on the same principle.

To work with wood, a milling cutter is installed on the machine - cutting tool. Processing of products is carried out according to the following scheme:

  • The copier defines a contour or surface. A flat template, a reference sample, a spatial model, a drawing, a photocell can act as a copier.
  • The tracking device is connected to the cutting head through a mechanical (rarely hydraulic or pneumatic) feed system.
  • According to a given template, the cutter creates a contour or surface.

Milling options

Milling on a copy machine can be done by one of two methods:

  • Counter milling, at which the part is fed in the opposite direction from the cutter.
  • Downhill milling, in which both the workpiece and the cutter move in the same direction.

The cutter on such devices can be made of mineral ceramics, synthetic or superhard material and can replace the grinding procedure. But for machines working with wood products, this is not very relevant, since this material is not particularly hard.

The process of creating a machine with your own hands

Buying a copy-milling machine for wood, especially equipped with a CNC, is beneficial for large manufacturers, in other cases it is easier to create it yourself.

Before manufacturing the machine, it is necessary to create a drawing and decide how the device will be used. If you plan to work with large products, then the size of the machine must also be large so that the cutter produces less vibration. In addition, you need to choose an electric motor of sufficient power. The choice depends on the density of the material with which you plan to work.

The number of axes is also determined at the layout stage, since changing the design of the finished machine can be problematic. To work with flat parts two axes are sufficient: with longitudinal and transverse movement. Workpieces with a small relief also require a perpendicularly moving axis. For processing more complex products, four or five axes may be needed.

There are many designs of a milling machine, but they all consist of three elements:

  • working surface;
  • bed;
  • milling head.

The design of the working surface of the copying machine must provide for height adjustment, and the milling head must be high-speed and equipped with an electric drive.

The layout of the copy-milling machine for wood can be vertical or horizontal. The comfort of working with the tool and unloading of finished parts depends on this.

Pantograph

Most cheap option, for the manufacture of which several boards and a milling cutter are needed. Designed for flat carving.

The shape is similar to a parallelogram. Thanks to this design, when moving, the nodal points describe equidistant curves. To scale the device, the link is lengthened.

The side of a parallelogram is twice as long overall length with copy tip. Because of this feature, when copying a part with a tip, the cutter will halve it, which reduces the error of the copier.

Model with plane-parallel mechanism

Used for contour milling. Unlike the previous model, a curvilinear trajectory is achieved by adding two axes perpendicular to each other. The third axis drives the cutter into the workpiece.

To balance the system, the design includes a counterweight on the other side of the swing frame. To be able to adjust, it is better to place it on a threaded stud.

Model for volumetric milling

On such a device, the milling head is placed on a swinging frame, which during processing moves on roller carriages along perpendicular guides. The model and part are mounted on two swivel nodes at the bottom of the base. The open bed makes it easy to clean out sawdust.

Serial copy-milling machine for wood, designed for both flat-relief and sculptural carving. The design provides for five controlled axles:

  • side levers;
  • swivel frame;
  • milling head;
  • work tables;
  • transverse movement of the head.

Quite light (weight about 28 kg) for one person.

The design of this model is similar to the Duplicarver-2, but it has two additional guide rollers (another linear axis), and the turntables are mounted vertically. Thanks to these changes, it became possible to work with long volumetric threads.

Although a manual wood router makes the job much easier and increases productivity, it still needs to be controlled. But the models used in mass production are equipped with numerical control (CNC). When working with such an apparatus, a person only needs to load the workpiece and pick up the finished part.

A simple CNC milling machine operates from a control program that the operator creates in a special system, according to a three-dimensional model developed in advance by a design engineer.

Unlike a simple CNC milling device, a programming system is installed in copier models, which itself compiles a control program. Such devices have an additional CNC attachment, which feels the reference workpiece, develops its three-dimensional model, on the basis of which the control program is made.

The main problem in machine tools with numerical control is the high cost. For small production there is no point in such an apparatus, since the payback period should be no more than five years. At home, with CNC it is easier to make not a copy machine, but an ordinary milling machine, which, however, is also not an easy task.

Milling is one of the most common wood processing methods. With the help of a milling cutter, you can make parts of a wide variety of configurations.

The resulting product is characterized high accuracy and surface cleanliness. indispensable in the home workshop, but often not a piece item is required, but several completely identical products.

This is where a wood milling and copying machine comes to the rescue. This is a device that can create copies of a reference product, recreate a part according to a template, and some models even work according to drawings.

Distinctive features of copy routers

The cutting tool of this type of machine is milling cutters various shapes and designs. Actually, a copy-milling machine is a device with a movable cutter, the depth and angle of penetration of which is adjusted with a special probe.

The range of products that will help to make a copy-milling machine is very wide. Among other things, it should be noted:

  • all kinds of furniture details;
  • carved and figured interior elements;
  • profile frames for paintings and photographs;
  • volumetric products with carvings (caskets, figurines);
  • exterior elements (skirting boards, platbands, baguettes);
  • decorative railings of stairs, details of fences;
  • tool handles.

In addition, copy-milling machines are used in technological process specific industries. On machines of this type, wooden parts of firearms (butt, fore-end) are created.

Machine device

Structurally, this machine consists of a frame on which a movable part is installed. In the simplest case, the movable part is a rigidly interconnected probe that moves along the surface of the model or template, and a cutting head that processes the workpiece. Devices with a mechanical connection are distinguished by ease of assembly; such a copy machine is easy to make with your own hands.

Note! Many models of copy routers allow you to cut not only exact copies of parts, but also reproduce them in a certain scale. For this, an additional device is used - a pantograph.

The pantograph can be mechanical (a linkage system that allows you to change proportions) or an electronic mechanism that controls a pneumatic or hydraulic drive.

A measuring finger with a pointed or rounded end is used as a probe. Good results when working with large parts gives a roller probe. It is a rubberized wheel that rolls freely over the surface, following the contours of the reference part. More expensive models have electronic control, and a laser meter is used as a probe.

The main types of copy routers

Devices of this type are in demand on the most different industries, it is a great helper for home master working with wood. Considering high demand, manufacturers offer many types of machines that differ in purpose and technical characteristics.

Copy-milling machines are distinguished by the degree of automation and the method of fixing the workpiece. The simplest are the most popular. desktop devices designed for the manufacture of small parts.

Stationary machines with pneumatic fixation of the workpiece are in demand. They perform a wide range of work and can process not only wood, but also metals. Demand in the production of automatic multi-spindle equipment that allows you to simultaneously perform several operations.

There are several groups of machines, based on their design features:

  • devices on a rotary frame that moves in a vertical plane;
  • a pantograph machine that allows you to make enlarged or reduced copies of the template;
  • multi-spindle devices with rotary tables;
  • photocopiers.

A copy-milling machine is a complex device, however, having the skills to work with metal, it can also be made in a home workshop. It is hardly worth trying to recreate powerful factory equipment; this will not be required for a home. best device for a home workshop, you can consider a simple desktop or stationary copy machine on a rotating frame with one working tool.

factory equipment

Not everyone will take up the production copy router on wood with their own hands. Still, it is difficult, the work will require skills, free time. If there is a need to acquire this useful machine in all respects, but there is no desire to mess around with drawings and details, it is worth considering buying a finished factory product.

We must not forget that the choice of any machine for a home workshop, copy-milling is no exception, is a serious matter. It is worth spending a little time comparing the main characteristics, choosing a device that is guaranteed to cope with the tasks. When choosing a machine, you should pay attention to the following:

  • type of device, as a result, the list of work performed;
  • engine power, labor productivity and permissible hardness of the processed material depend on it;
  • brand and country of origin.

The price of the machine largely depends on its manufacturer. With approximately equal indicators, the products of the EU countries and the USA will be more expensive. Much less price devices from Asian countries, but here you have to be careful, far from always low cost is adjacent to quality.

Producer examples

Those who need a reliable machine for flat milling should pay attention to the products of the Italian company GRIGGIO. Machines of this trademark have a relatively low price and are good decision for creation of shaped details, plinths, platbands. With their help it is convenient to create facades of furniture sheets and wooden doors.

The VFK-810 milling machine with a 45 degree table rotation is perfect for those who are fond of making furniture. Her distinguishing feature– high speed of rotation of the cutter (up to 20,000 rpm), which guarantees excellent surface quality of the finished product.

The Chinese unit MX 5068 has comparable characteristics at a much lower price. It boasts a cutter rotation speed of up to 18,000 revolutions, uses a pneumatic drive to turn the table and move the tool.

Those who are going to seriously engage in carpentry should pay attention to the milling unit made in Taiwan. WINNER LH-1000 will be the best assistant if you need serial production of the same type of parts. A feature of the machine is a multi-level spindle, which allows you to perform several operations at once in one pass and create a product of the required profile without the need to rearrange the cutting tool.

CNC copy-milling machines

A separate type of copy-milling machines are devices with CNC (computer numerical control). These machines are more complex to manufacture, while they have a number of significant advantages compared to simple models:

  • the ability to work in a fully automatic mode without the participation of an operator;
  • consistently high quality of manufactured products;
  • ease of setup and programming;
  • possibility of integration into a computer system.

CNC devices are obviously more expensive, their purchase is advisable for large manufacturing enterprises.

Homemade copy router

Factory-made devices are expensive; the design of a home-made wood copier will help to get out of the situation. It is unlikely that he will be able to compete with purchased models in terms of power and reliability, but the price is guaranteed.

There is an opinion that the easiest way to make a copy machine is from an available conventional wood milling machine. It is a bad idea.
