The cherished dream of a smooth, but inexpensive, flooring is close to completion: a sheet of PVC material has already been bought, the base of the floor has been prepared, it remains to find out how to lay linoleum correctly.

Every novice repairer, before laying, must make the correct measurements of the room. Considering all the protrusions, depressions, irregularities, it is imperative to measure the length and width of the room in several places - domestic buildings do not particularly differ in proportion. In this case, it is better to measure 7 times, add 10 cm each (just in case), and after calculating the additional allowance for the drawing (if you need to combine it), feel free to go to buy household (if desired, commercial) linoleum.

DIY linoleum laying is a doable task

Correct styling is not difficult if you know some of the subtleties. First you need to arm yourself with the following tools:

  • a sharp stationery knife with replaceable blades, you can use an excellent set of knives with trapezoidal blades (for marking) and with hooks (for finishing cutting)
  • an even long ruler (better than a metal one)
  • large scissors (for correction)
  • spatulas different sizes(for leveling the surface)
  • rubber or wooden hammer with a rubber tip (for tapping, straightening)
  • load (to protect against swelling)
  • roller (for applying glue)
  • primer, glue (mastic) or tape

Laying linoleum with your own hands will take place with minimal labor costs if the base of the floor is flat, dry, clean. In the deplorable state of the floor slabs, it will be necessary to create a screed of cement and sand, with minor deviations, you can get by with a thin layer of self-leveling mixtures. Wood floors also require preparation: leveling with plywood, sanding or filling.

You can lay linoleum on the floor using several methods:

  • Laying the canvas without the use of adhesives- this is the simplest and fastest method, which is suitable for small rooms, but not recommended for an area of more than 15-20 m 2. When laying linoleum loosely on a concrete floor or wooden base in large rooms there is a risk of a "wave", especially when moving furniture.
  • Installation of the cover on double-sided tape provides better safety of linoleum, protection against rapid wear. If necessary, it peels off easily with little residual effects from glue or tape
  • Gluing considered the only the right decision for large rooms using more than 1 linoleum sheet. Laying linoleum on a wooden floor or concrete using glue (PVA, Bustilat - for a fleecy inner surface) or mastic (on latex base- for a smooth seamy side) allows you to securely fix the coating on the prepared substrate. The only drawback is the rather laborious dismantling.

It is best to transport and store purchased PVC covering on a roll, because jammed folds can cause problems with their alignment. If the purchase took place in winter, then it is necessary to "leave alone" the linoleum for several hours so that it "gets used" to the ambient temperature.

The answer to the question: "How to lay linoleum correctly?" brilliantly simple. Cut pieces of the coating should be laid on the floor and allowed to “lie down” from several hours to 2-3 days, depending on the thickness of the coating and the ability to take an even horizontal shape. To speed up this process, you can apply various weights in those places that cannot be leveled, make cuts in the corners so that the coating fits snugly against the walls and floor. It is necessary to orient the sheets so that the direction of the drawing runs parallel to the main wall. Although the arrangement of the elongated pattern is perpendicular, it will visually lengthen a narrow room.

Then, with a sharp knife, the canvas is cut strictly along the perimeter of the room so that a gap of 0.5-1 cm remains between the wall and the linoleum for free narrowing-stretching. If you are laying linoleum with your own hands without gluing, then all that remains is to remove all excess, fix the coating in doorways with slats or thresholds, and proceed with the installation of skirting boards.

When gluing the coating, it is desirable to pre-prepared (leveled and cleaned) base of the floor, as well as the back side of linoleum without lint, to cover with a primer. How to properly lay linoleum on glue:

  1. Unfold the canvas on the floor and fold back one half
  2. Apply glue (mastic) to the floor using a roller or notched trowel
  3. Unbend the folded part, smooth out thoroughly, removing air bubbles
  4. Repeat with the other half of the cover.
  5. Cut off excess
  6. Install slats, thresholds or skirting boards

If double-sided tape is used, then first the tape is glued around the perimeter and over the entire area of the room in the form of cells without removing the upper protective layer. Having unfolded the roll, you need to bend half, fold it onto the other. Then remove the paper from the surface of the tape and carefully spread the roll, smoothing it towards the walls. Linoleum is also laid on the floor on the other side. After that, the excess is cut off, fixed with plinths.

When laying linoleum with your own hands Special attention it is necessary to pay the joining of the strips. Very basic but effective reception will allow novice repairmen to make the joints almost invisible. For this you need:

  • put the covers on top of each other so that one canvas overlaps the other by about 10 cm
  • straighten the stripes, apply glue to the floor
  • glue the bottom of the cover
  • repeat the operation with the top strip
  • cut off with a sharp knife strictly under the ruler both layers of linoleum anywhere overlap
  • remove the scraps and glue both edges tightly

The use of “ cold welding"Or a special" liquid for soldering seams ", which guarantee a strong adhesion of surfaces and a perfectly smooth invisible joint. This type of special glue is of type A (for welding freshly laid linoleum) and type C (for filling joints and fastening parted canvases).

Basic tips for laying linoleum on the floor with your own hands:

  • make sure the measurements are correct
  • qualitatively prepare the base
  • enlist the help of a partner (friend, brother, godfather, etc.)

Strong foundation under your feet!

The modern building materials market offers customers a variety of floor coverings that differ in price range and technical indicators. Among this variety, we note the material that appeared in the middle of the last century, the popularity of which has not changed for several decades. Linoleum has excellent characteristics, reasonable cost, uncomplicated installation... Owners of city apartments often have a question about laying this floor material with their own hands, we will consider this issue in detail.

Tools for the job

In order to properly lay linoleum, you will need the following tools:

  • pencil;
  • roulette;
  • metal ruler;
  • stationery knife.

The list of basic tools can also be supplemented with a screwdriver, nailer, hammer, roller and brush.

Stages of work

Professionals distinguish two main stages of linoleum laying.

  1. Preparatory work.
  2. Direct laying of the coating.

At the stage of preparation, it is necessary to remove all furniture from the room, to provide free access to the floor.

Floor preparation

This stage involves leveling the surface, since the linoleum is laid on a smooth and even floor. All unevenness on the floor must be removed.

Wooden floor

V country houses, mainly wooden floors are used, the preparation of which must be taken with great responsibility.

When laying the coating on a wooden floor, proceed as follows:

  1. Dismantle all the old floor skirting boards around the perimeter of the room. Instead of them, it is then better to use new PVC skirting boards. Examine the condition of the floor surface. All debris accumulated under the skirting boards is removed.
  2. Raise the entire wooden floor, move the boards tightly, eliminating the gaps between them. If we identify low-quality boards, we will replace them at the same time.
  3. After all the gaps between the boards are eliminated, the surface will have to be additionally processed. Armed with grinder or hand plane, you need to walk around the entire perimeter of the floor. To simplify the procedure for leveling the floor, you can use plywood, laying it with a slight offset. Use parquet glue to fix the plywood. All gaps between the plywood sheets must be treated with mastic, dried with high quality, and pierced with nails (if necessary).
  4. If squeaks are found, a similar problem is eliminated. All rotten boards are removed and replaced with new ones. The protruding heads of the nails are carefully hammered in with a hammer, all the screws are tightened deeper.
  5. In the presence of differences in height, the boards are leveled using stands or with the help of scraping. Large cracks are removed with putty, then primed, treated with a special antiseptic.

Concrete floor

For modern apartment buildings concrete floors are typical. To level and strengthen them, it is important to use self-leveling floors created on a cement basis. It is quite possible to do this on your own, without attracting qualified specialists.

If there is a self-leveling or concrete floor in the room, its preparation is carried out according to a certain algorithm:

  1. First you need to conduct a visual inspection of the floor surface, remove debris. If sharp changes in height are detected, the problem is solved by using concrete or leveling mixtures. If the differences are too large, you can build wooden frame, then lay the chipboard sheets. All seams between the sheets must be carefully putty.
  2. Next, the most decorative coating is laid.

Tiled covering

When laying linoleum on a tile, first inspect the surface, assess the condition of the tile. If broken or chipped tiles are found, they need to be replaced. All the seams between the tiles are carefully rubbed, getting a flat surface.

Attention ! Laying linoleum on a floor that has not been previously prepared will lead to the "manifestation" of all tile joints on the linoleum.

If it is not possible to level the floor covered with ceramic tiles, remove the tiles, or cover the tiles with chipboard sheets. Minor irregularities can be eliminated by using the underlay decorative material.

We lay linoleum

After the base is ready, you can proceed to laying the linoleum with your own hands. We offer step-by-step instructions.

Before you start laying linoleum, bring it indoors, spread it out at room temperature for 10-12 hours.

Advice ! To level the linoleum, you can put heavy objects on it.

This "trick" will help you eliminate all waves, avoid mistakes when cutting the material. This decorative material can be fixed in two main ways: by welding or on double-sided tape. The choice of laying technology depends on the surface, room humidity, type of linoleum. Small rooms suggest laying linoleum in a roll width, but for apartments with a modern layout, this width will not be enough.

Single Strip Option

We cut out linoleum along the perimeter of the room, making an allowance on each side of 10-15 cm. During the operation of linoleum, its shrinkage is possible, if you do not leave allowances, linoleum will lose its aesthetic characteristics. The strip is spread around the room, checking for size. Next, you need to fold the strip of material in half lengthwise. The open part of the subfloor is treated with special glue using a brush or roller.

Advice ! After applying glue to the floor surface, wait 10-15 minutes, then start laying linoleum.

Unfold the linoleum, carefully start laying it on the glue-treated surface. Take your time, use a clean roller to smooth the surface. Further, perform similar actions with the second part of the coating.

Instead of glue for fixing the decorative coating, you can use double-sided construction tape. The laying technique is similar to the case with glue, but first, an adhesive tape is applied to the floor, then the protective film is removed from it, the covering is laid.

Laying the coating using a multi-lane method

You can also lay the cover in two strips. V modern construction two types of laying are used: hot and cold welding.

Cold welding

This method is considered simple, you can lay the coating on your own, not involve professionals. Cold welding requires model C and A glue.

When choosing brand "A", you will additionally need an adhesive tape. It is applied to the joints between the edges of the coating. Then it is cut with a sharp knife along the joint, glue is introduced into the gap formed. Once the glue dries, the tape is removed.

When choosing "C" grade glue, it is enough to simply apply it to the edges between the strips of the coating, at the moment of their joint.

Hot welding

This type of linoleum fastening involves the use of special equipment. In addition, additional materials will be required for hot welding. In work, an indispensable device for welding, into which a special polymer cord will be inserted (a substance that holds the linoleum strips) is indispensable.

First you need to bring the temperature of the welding machine to +350 degrees Celsius. This temperature allows the polymer cord to melt. Hot welding is performed in two stages:

  1. At the first stage, the apparatus is placed at the end of one strip of linoleum, so that the bonding polymer substance falls directly between the strips of the coating. Then we move the device to the center of the room. The polymer layer will be slightly higher than the coating, its excess can be removed with a sickle knife. Excess polymer must be removed until it hardens.
  2. At the second stage, we perform similar actions, only with the second half of the decorative coating. At this stage, it is necessary to overlap the bonding material with the first part. Excess material is also removed with a knife.

How to lay linoleum on a concrete surface

Laying is allowed from any corner of the room. First you need to spread the covering over the entire area of the room, align the stripes so as to comply with the pattern. All excess pieces are cut off, leaving 5-10 cm of overlap on the wall. Between the wall and the covering, you need to leave 0.5-1 cm gaps around the entire perimeter of the room.

When laying the covering in a room whose area does not exceed 20 m2, there is no need to additionally strengthen the strips, it is enough to use the skirting boards. When carrying out work in a room with a larger area, after marking, it is necessary to bend the linoleum, coat the floor with special glue, then put the covering back.

After laying the covering, pass it with a heavy roller, moving towards the walls from the center, expelling all air bubbles from under the covering.

To fix the joints between the strips of linoleum, use polymer welding or double-sided tape. After 1-2 days, you can start installing decorative skirting boards on self-tapping screws or a dowel - nails.

Conclusion

If you don't install skirting boards, the decorative flooring will look unfinished. In hardware stores there are PVC skirting boards of any color, you can choose corners, connecting elements for them. If you install plastic skirting boards around the perimeter of the room, you will turn your floor into a real work of art.

When planning a renovation and deciding which floor covering to give preference to, many make a choice in favor of linoleum. People's love for this material is explained, first of all, by its practicality. The simplicity of appearance should not be misleading: such a coating is resistant to mechanical damage and moisture, which is especially important for the kitchen, hallway and utilitarian premises.

Peculiarities

Linoleum is not only affordable, but also easy to install. The fact that it is not at all necessary to be an extra-class master to lay this material, but only minimal skills and understanding of the flooring technology are required, is a kind of motivation. This characteristic is especially relevant, given the current price tag for the services of professionals. Let's study this issue in more detail and find out all the intricacies of installation.

Modern linoleum is strikingly different from the coating of the times of the USSR, not only in performance, but also in decorative qualities. Depending on the material that is used to make the canvas, the final product acquires certain useful properties.

Manufacturers use:

  • Natural materials. By giving preference linseed oil, powdered limestone, resin of wood conifers, wood flour combined with natural dyes. Buying natural linoleum, which is decorative, environmentally friendly and durable, is not a cheap pleasure.
  • PVC (polyvinyl chloride). In this case, the base can be foamed or fabric with heat insulating or sound insulating properties. The coverage is also baseless.

  • Alkyd / glyphthalic modified resins in combination with organic / inorganic fillers. Alkyd (glyphthalic) linoleum with a fabric base is characterized by high heat and sound insulation qualities.
  • Nitrocellulose. The coloxyl coating has no base, it has good elasticity, resistance to humid environments. The disadvantage of such products is low fire safety.
  • Rubber. The high elasticity and water resistance properties of the Relynne coating are due to the combined composition: synthetic rubber, recycled rubber and bitumen as a binder component of the lower layers.

Pros and cons

Consider in detail the arguments in favor of purchasing linoleum:

  • Hygiene. It is immune to dust, is of no interest to pathogenic microorganisms and is dust-repellent.
  • Diversity color solutions and textures. A large assortment expands the possibilities for decorating premises for any purpose and style.
  • Simple installation. Self-laying linoleum is a procedure available to everyone who knows how to handle the simplest household tool.
  • Hassle-free service. To keep the linoleum floor clean, there is enough regular wash water.

It is common for newer models to have anti-slip or bacteriostatic coatings that only benefit.

There are also several disadvantages:

  • Contact with open fire and chemicals is contraindicated for this material; exposure to low temperatures and direct sunlight is also undesirable.
  • High ductility is another negative characteristic linoleum. Regardless of the type, the flexible material always takes the shape of the surface on which it is laid, so the existing base will definitely need high-quality preparation. Otherwise, any unevenness will be noticeable, which will affect the appearance of the linoleum and nullify the effort spent.

How to Prepare?

Preparatory work imply three key points.

  • Creation optimal conditions indoors, which includes taking out furniture and putting things in order. According to SNIP, the value of the optimal temperature regime in the room where the material will be stored, before laying, should be from 15 ° C. The moisture content of the subfloors cannot be ignored either. If they are concrete, then the maximum is 5%, if they are made of wood or chipboard, then 10%. The norm of the humidity regime of the air is from 60%.

  • Surface preparation. First, the skirting boards and fittings are dismantled - connecting elements, plugs, corners. The floor needs to be cleaned of debris, crumbs, greasy stains... The better the base is prepared, the longer the linoleum will last. The flat surface underneath serves as a guarantee that the material will not stretch, deform and wipe. To understand whether it is necessary to dismantle the existing coating or whether it is possible to lay new linoleum on the old one, you need to evaluate the existing foundation. Most masters who have been repairing for several years advise not to neglect the removal of the previous layer.

There are several serious arguments on the side of dismantling the old coating:

  • Laying on a base that is free of dust, dirt, mold and mildew is the key to creating a healthy microclimate in the apartment.
  • The leveled surface contributes to even distribution load, which eliminates damage inside material.
  • A clean base provides better adhesion of linoleum to the floor than in the case of laying on an old floor.

Coating preparation

An important part of preparing linoleum for laying is acclimatization in the room where you plan to lay it. The roll is placed upright and left as it is. If you yourself have to do the styling in winter period, then it will be necessary to place the roll in the room in advance, letting it lie down in a folded form for half a day.

In low temperature conditions, the brittleness of the material increases. It is important that the linoleum warms up naturally, and the room temperature is suitable for this.

24 hours before the flooring, the roll is rolled and cut, leaving the panels to straighten to prevent the formation of waves. When cutting canvases, leave a 10 cm margin, taking into account the folds on the walls, placement in doorways, niches and under radiators. After cutting, the linoleum needs to be given time to lie down, even under its own weight. Alignment will proceed much more efficiently if large canvases are pressed down with small ones.

How to choose materials

Decide on the type of linoleum. The floor covering can be homogeneous (baseless) and heterogeneous, where a special lining is provided - felt or polyethylene. If the surface is flat, the first is considered the best option. When the floors have small irregularities, then the second type is preferable. Linoleum with felt backing can only be used in dry rooms.

Roll coating differs in wear resistance, therefore, there are 3 types of material:

  • Household type. The scope of application of models with a low wear resistance class is limited to residential premises.
  • Semi-commercial type. Coatings with a middle class of wear resistance are used in places of medium traffic. It may be small office rooms,
  • Commercial type. The high class of wear resistance allows it to be used in premises with increased traffic.

Thickness selection sheet material in the case of laying on fiberboard, it depends on the height of the drops and the number of defects. If the surface is very uneven, then in order to hide all the imperfections, a thicker material is selected.

Selecting skirting boards for linoleum by material, crucial has a coating design:

  • For linoleum with imitation of parquet, skirting boards made of MDF / PFC with a wood-like texture are considered the optimal framing;
  • For linoleum with other patterns, polyurethane / PVC fillets are most often used as a finishing touch.

When choosing skirting boards for linoleum by color, the easiest way is to heed the advice professional designers, which offer to build on the color scheme:

  • Floor covering. This is a classic. Skirting boards should be a couple of shades darker.
  • Platbands. The main thing is that the framing in thickness and color coincides with the thickness and shade of the platbands.
  • Background finishing. The dimensions of the room are important here. Skirting boards in a small room with low ceiling painted to match the walls, since with a contrasting frame it will visually decrease in size.
  • Furnishings. It is based on the color of the largest piece of furniture that forms the center of the interior.
  • Ram on the windows. This solution looks unusual, especially with unconventional colors. window frames- gray, beige, black, olive.
  • Accent decor. Suitable for those who like non-standard solutions.

Another option is to choose a color arbitrarily, without tying it to anything. But color palette will then be limited to neutral shades of white and cream.

Tools

During the installation process, you will need:

  • Universal cutting knife and set of interchangeable blades.
  • Building ruler-level, short meter ruler and long from 2 m.
  • Connecting plinth for the linoleum plant on the wall.
  • Notched spatula.
  • Large roller.
  • Roulette and pencil.

With special scissors, which are supplied with replaceable blades, cutting / trimming the material is much easier. The markings are made with a trapezoidal blade, and the final trimming is done with a hooked blade.

From consumables, depending on the chosen styling method, prepare:

  • putty mixture;
  • clamping strips;
  • Double-sided tape;
  • composition for welding seam joints;
  • emulsion adhesive-mastic;
  • trailing edge;
  • screws and nails.

How to calculate the material?

Linoleum is sold in rolls of various widths up to 5 m in half-meter increments. When installing, laying the material, you need to step back from the walls by 1-2 cm. Thanks to the gaps, the coating will not rest against the walls, starting to get lost and forming ugly waves. In order to avoid a mistake when calculating the material, it is important to carefully measure the room.

Algorithm of actions:

  • Measure the width of the room. For accuracy, indicators are taken at the extreme points and in the center. At uneven walls, the greatest accuracy of measurements will be ensured by checking indicators in four or five places.
  • Measure the length of the room. The work is carried out according to the above-described scheme. It is important to measure at least three points in order to detect flaws or deviations.
  • Rooms with non-standard geometry are measured differently. The baseline is the length / width of the room at its widest point. When choosing linoleum, determine on the spot which of the options is more suitable and how you will place it.
  • Accounting doorways... Often, laying involves inserting material into openings or joining it with a floor covering in an adjacent room. In this case, the margin is 70% of the wall thickness. When planning the installation inside the opening with the help of thresholds, proceed from the calculation that the door frame will hide the joints.
  • Accounting for niches under heating radiators. The depth of the batteries on each side is measured, and then the total width of the coating is added to the resulting value.
  • To the obtained indicators of length / width, they are plus 7 cm, which will be a margin, allowing you to accurately adjust the linoleum to the base.

The presence of a small overlap is your insurance against unpleasant surprises when installing linoleum.

Laying rules for different coatings

Training different surfaces has its own specifics.

Consider the requirements for any base for future coverage:

  • It should be dry, smooth and firm. Use a spirit level to check the surface is even.
  • The allowable size of the gaps is 0.3 cm.
  • Make sure there are no bumps, sagging, cracks, bulges, protruding screws, or nail heads.

Laying on uneven subfloors accelerates the wear of the flooring, shortening its lifespan. The initial state of the foundation determines the scope of preparation work.

If you are going to lay linoleum on wood flooring, then you need to inspect the floors for dropped fragments, curvatures, drops, all kinds of deformations.

Disadvantages are eliminated in several ways:

  • You can putty problem areas, and then grind the surface with a grinder or plane.
  • To make sheathing of fiberboard / chipboard / plywood. Hardboard flooring is allowed.
  • Reanimate damaged parquet flooring by replacing missing planks and cycling it.
  • Use self-leveling floors.

Linoleum is often laid on concrete pavement... In almost every case, such a surface needs to be leveled.

Suitable for this:

  • Cover with fiberboard / chipboard.
  • Fill with self-leveling mixture if minor surface differences need to be eliminated.
  • Make a concrete screed.

A new screed dries within a month, and self-leveling mixtures dry in a few days, which significantly saves time. Make sure you choose the right linoleum, as not all types of linoleum can be laid on a concrete floor.

For such bases, the following flooring models are suitable:

  • Materials on a heat and sound insulating base.
  • The main type of alkyd linoleum, which has a non-woven / woven backing.
  • Some types of coating that exclude the possibility of combining directly with a rough version of the concrete base, therefore, you will need to create a dry layer using sheet material.

Consider a few more simple types of bases and the nuances of laying linoleum on them:

  • On the carpet. You need to get rid of the obsolete coating in the room, clean the surface and level the problem areas.
  • On linoleum. Not everyone wants to do extra work, spend time and effort dismantling the old coating, so they limit themselves to laying new linoleum on top of the existing one. Such a base only needs to be thoroughly degreased.
  • On the tiles. This is most often done in the kitchen or in the hallway. Loose tiles are re-glued. For leveling the surface, the leveling compound and Knauf floating floors are equally suitable.

How to lay: step by step instructions

You can lay linoleum in 3 ways:

  • Free flooring. This method eliminates the fixation of the coating to the base, which is suitable for rooms up to 20 sq m and not intensive use of the floor.
  • By means of adhesive tape. It is advisable to use this option when the area of the room exceeds 20 square meters and the frequent movement of heavy objects is possible.
  • With the help of mastic emulsion glue. This method must be used when planning active exploitation coverings in places with high traffic.

How to cut?

The first stage of do-it-yourself flooring technology involves marking the linoleum and cutting, when the coating has acclimatized in the room, lay down and smoothed out, getting rid of a specific "new" smell.

There are two options:

  • Rolling the material along the base and cutting off the excess on the spot, which is faster than the second method, but the accuracy of cutting is questionable here if there is no dexterity.
  • Carrying out all measurements with subsequent transfer to the surface to be cut. In this case, damage to the canvas is possible due to an error in dimensions.

When laying involves the use of a solid canvas, then after 2 days it will be possible to start installing the skirting boards, that is, in fact, to complete the work.

When you have to lay several canvases, it is important to master the wisdom of joining linoleum:

  • When working with plain canvases, place them in the direction of the light to achieve a "solid" finish.
  • Place patterned linoleum at outer wall, making sure that the pattern of the canvases clearly matches.
  • The connection of individual fragments implies their joining to each other along the factory edges.
  • To make it easier to perform trimming, bending around utilities, wait until the material is finally acclimatized and acquires the necessary flexibility. At the points of the cut, the coating is alternately bent at the desired angles, neatly forming a contour.

Ready-made templates should be allowed to rest for several days. The canvases are laid out on the floor, observing the cutting pattern, and fixed with massive objects.

Styling process

Fixation methods

First, the floor and the back of the coating are primed. After a couple of days, when the primed surfaces have dried, we proceed to the installation itself.

Work order:

  • Apply glue-mastic to the area of the base that is covered with linoleum and to the canvas itself.
  • Transfer it to the treated area, then press down firmly.
  • Smooth out the coating with a roller, removing the remaining air.

When applying mastic, it is important to ensure that the layer is not excessive, as a result of which the linoleum can go bumps.

You can also lay the flooring dry. Sequencing:

  • First, you need to glue the perimeter of the base, the joints and optionally the entire coating with adhesive tape, leaving the protective layer of the tape intact.
  • Spread the canvas, cut it out, let it rest.
  • Trim seam allowances.
  • Glue the first panel parallel to the wall.
  • Raise the panel to the wall along which it was glued, after which, one by one, release the attached tapes from the protective layer, fixing the linoleum throughout the entire area.

The rest of the canvases are glued in the same way, then they are carefully smoothed, trying not to miss a single unevenness, otherwise all the work will go down the drain.

Flooring can be done with glue. Procedure:

  • Unscrew the sheet from one edge, distribute the glue evenly over the base and leave the sheet on the floor. Roll back opposite side canvases to the border of the coverage area with mastic and spread the glue over the base of the other part.
  • A large roller is ideal for quick leveling of the surface. They begin to wield the tool from the middle, gradually moving towards the edges and getting rid of excess air.
  • Smooth the canvas close to the walls using a spatula.
  • With a metal ruler, the canvas is sequentially pressed closer to the wall, and then the excess is cut off with a knife, after having tucked the hook-shaped blade into it.
  • The second sheet is fixed with glue the same way, and it will need to be glued overlapping to the surface of the first, going three centimeters.

It will take three days for the coating to become durable. Docking points can be processed after a day has passed from the moment of installation.

It is possible to lay natural linoleum qualitatively with the help of special glue with specific properties. For this reason, increased requirements are imposed on the base. The surface must be dry, clean and absorbent, and self-leveling mixtures help to achieve these conditions. The roll is acclimatized and must be rewound so that the front side is inside: this will reduce the longitudinal shrinkage due to the action of the water-dispersed adhesive.

Work order:

  • Cut the sheets according to the arrows on the back of the blade.
  • Open and stir the glue. Distribute it on the prepared base.
  • This type of linoleum is glued along the strip, and rolled with a steel roller, which weighs about 10 kg, which allows you to evenly distribute the glue, removing air from the bottom.
  • After rolling the joints, the glue is allowed to dry completely, and then the joints are joined with a combi-marker for the welding cord.
  • After cleaning the seams with a vacuum cleaner, you can start soldering, preheating them with a hairdryer to 350 ° C. Finishing trimming is carried out when the seams are completely dry.

Linoleum is a popular material for many reasons, which is often used as flooring for the kitchen, corridor or hallway. Despite its rather simple appearance, it perfectly resists scratches and moisture, and can also be easily installed by yourself. Consider how to lay linoleum: how to cut it out, and then take care of it in order to extend its service life.

How to lay linoleum is a question that interests many who have started an independent and rather budget repair... After all, this flooring can be called one of the cheapest. But at the same time, this material is worthy of attention, because it meets all the requirements and quite well withstands exposure external factors... Consider each stage of the work to be performed during the installation process, as well as some of the features and nuances.

Floor preparation for linoleum: what should be the base

A high-quality and suitable base is a guarantee of a long service life of the material. In order not to wipe it, and also look as aesthetically pleasing as possible, it must be laid on a flat surface. This will avoid unnecessary stretching and deformation of the material, and therefore will extend the life of the coating.

First of all, before laying the flooring, it is necessary to remove all the skirting boards as carefully as possible. This must be done, since the fastening must be made to the walls. In some cases old skirting board fixed in place if its condition satisfies the owners. In this case, dismantling must be done as carefully as possible to avoid damage.

Useful advice! In order not to confuse during further installation which plinth should be attached to where, you can number them during removal. Using a simple pencil, mark the number on the back of the baseboard and at the bottom of the wall where it was attached.

It is extremely important to assess the validity. This will allow you to choose the most rational algorithm of actions and decide whether it is worth dismantling the old coating or you can lay it directly on top. Next, we will consider in detail the specifics of working with various surfaces.

How to properly lay linoleum on a wooden floor:technology features

Laying linoleum on wooden surface Is a common technique used, for example, if there is old parquet that has lost its attractive appearance or painted boards. The main thing to do before laying on a wooden floor is to assess its condition. In both cases, there may be some problems with the base, for example, the elements of the parquet that have fallen out or the deformation of the boards.

Therefore, it is not necessary to count on a special evenness and smoothness of the surface, which means that before putting the linoleum on the wooden floor, it is necessary to prepare it yourself. Here are some of the more popular options for solving this problem:

  • using a plane or sander, the base can be leveled. To do this, all cracks, irregularities and other defects are covered with a putty. Then grinding is done;
  • in order to hide the existing surface imperfections, you can lay another layer of chipboard or fiberboard plates. In some cases, they even resort to laying linoleum on plywood;
  • if you need to deal with missing parquet planks, you can first restore them, and then loop the parquet;
  • in order to achieve a perfectly flat surface, you can pour a special compound on top, the so-called self-leveling floor, which has the ability to level.

Thus, there are several ways to solve the problem, and it is more than possible to get a level base with an old wooden floor. You can learn more about how to properly lay linoleum after considering the features of working with other bases.

How to glue linoleum to a concrete floor

Almost always, an old concrete base requires work aimed at leveling it. And we can say that the methods and technologies have a certain similarity with those used for wooden floors:

  • before laying the linoleum on the concrete floor, cover the existing base with a wooden flooring. For this purpose, chipboard or fiberboard plates are suitable;
  • pour a concrete screed capable of self-leveling.

In order to provide linoleum with a reliable fixation on a concrete base, you need to choose the right adhesive composition and that the chosen flooring meets the requirements. So, the following types of linoleum are suitable for laying on a concrete base:

  • material with an insulating backing. In this case, the back of the linoleum has a special non-woven or woven material designed to prevent the passage of heat and sound;
  • alkyd linoleum, for which a non-woven or woven fabric is used;
  • other types of linoleum that are not suitable for adhesion to a rough concrete base. In this case, it will be necessary to install an additional dry layer, which is laid under the linoleum. What can be used for this? Perfect, for example, the same plywood, chipboard, fiberboard, etc.

Laying linoleum on a concrete floor has its own characteristics, and the main thing in this case is to choose the right materials. So before making a purchase, you should once again make sure that your choice meets the requirements and familiarize yourself with the algorithm that indicates how to lay linoleum on a concrete floor.

How to lay linoleum when it comes to other base materials

The first question that interests many home owners is whether it is possible to lay linoleum on old linoleum. V in this case the answer is unequivocal: it is possible to lay linoleum on top of the same, but old coating. The main thing is to first make sure that it meets the requirements, namely, it does not have holes, cracks and does not differ in excessively large thickness. If so, then first of all it is imperative to degrease the surface of the old coating.

Another difficult question is how to properly lay linoleum if carpet has already been laid on the floor. In this case, the old coating must not only be removed, but it is also worth taking care of thorough cleaning of the surface in order to remove the lint and any dirt. All irregularities must also be eliminated until the surface is sufficiently flat and smooth.

If you need to solve the issue of laying linoleum where the tiles have already been laid, then in this case there is no need to dismantle the old coating. The main thing is that all the elements of the tiles are in their places. If a few have already disappeared, it is worth picking up tiles of a suitable size and gluing them in place. After that, the surface is poured with a special compound intended for leveling. It is important that at the same time it has sufficiently high adhesive properties.

Regardless of what you have to lay linoleum on: wood, tiles, concrete or old linoleum, in any case, you need to make sure that the base is thoroughly dried before you start laying. This is important because moisture cannot evaporate through the linoleum, which means that with a poorly dried base under the coating, mold and mildew will appear very soon.

Useful advice! Before you put the linoleum, you must carefully clean and wash the surface of the base. After all, even the smallest pebbles and grains of sand will negatively affect the life of the material. Tiny indentations and protrusions can also cause harm.

Material preparation and selection of tools forlinoleum flooring

Material preparation involves not only trimming it, but also storage conditions. The ideal temperature regime in which linoleum should be before laying is considered to be from 15 to 25 ° C. This is due to an increase in the fragility of the coating when exposed to low temperatures. Therefore, if you have to lay linoleum with your own hands in winter, then you must definitely bring it into the room in advance and, without unrolling it, let it lie down for at least 12 hours.

Useful advice! In order to further avoid the waviness of the coating, after the linoleum is deployed on the surface, you need to leave it for a while before proceeding with cutting and laying.

While the linoleum rolled out on the floor is leveled, it is worth thinking about the availability of all the necessary for self styling tools:

  • a sharp knife with a short blade (a boot knife works best);
  • scissors;
  • roulette;

All of the above is likely to be found in the closet of any home craftsman. So there is no need to purchase any expensive tools for styling, which is another indisputable plus in this case.

DIY linoleum laying: step by step instructions for work

Before gluing linoleum to the floor, you need to know one thing very much important rule: for rooms with an area not exceeding 25 m², no adhesive is used. Of course, this only applies to cases where one piece or, in extreme cases, two pieces of material is used. In this case, it will be enough to fix the material under the skirting boards. You can use double-sided tape at the junction.

So, let's take a closer look at each step of the work:

  1. After making sure that the roll of linoleum, which you previously unrolled, lay down for a sufficient amount of time and leveled off, we put it in such a way that one of the sides is almost close to the wall, and the gap is only 3-5 mm. The material should be slightly overlapped relative to the remaining three walls.
  2. If the area of the room is large enough and you cannot use one sheet, you will have to work with the joints. First of all, attention should be paid to fitting the joints so that these places look aesthetically pleasing. Only after that you can proceed directly to laying the pieces, again, not forgetting about some overlap on the walls. Very often the surface of linoleum has some kind of drawing, ornament or pattern. In this case, there is an additional need to combine the drawing at the joints. The most important thing is to do it properly in the middle of the room. This is also important if the pattern is repeated in the next room, and you need to combine it in the doorway. To do this, one of the cover sheets must be shifted until the drawing matches.
  3. This stage is relevant if you have to work with several pieces of linoleum that have a pattern. Most often, the drawing imitates parquet or tiled flooring, that is, it consists of the intersection of straight lines. In this case, in order for the coating to look as neat as possible, these lines should not be located at an angle relative to the walls. Such linoleum will look beautiful only if the lines are located strictly parallel.
  4. After that, you need to fit the linoleum to the ledges and niches that are in the room. In fact, you have to deal with this almost always, since niches under the windowsill and in the doorway are a common thing. In that case, in order to avoid mistakes and not spoil the material, you must first measure the depth of the niche.

How to cut linoleumin different cases: consideration of examples

As a first example, consider the features of working with a corridor. In this case, the first overlap, which should correspond in size to the depth of the niche, is made about front door... To do this, first you just need to measure the depth of the niche and wrap the corresponding section of the coating. Then it remains only to carefully cut off the excess areas on the sides, so that the remaining piece fits perfectly inside. In the same way, linoleum is fitted to all other niches that exist.

Another case, which is much more often encountered in the kitchen than in the corridor, is the presence of a ledge. In this case, to carry out the most accurate measurements, it is necessary to lay the linoleum up to the ledge and tuck it. The depth of the protrusion should be measured and then marked on the material. After that, all that remains is to carefully trim the cover.

Except for these situations, there is nothing difficult in the process of fitting linoleum. It is enough to just slightly bend the linoleum to the wall so that it fits as tightly as possible to it, and then, using a knife and a ruler, carefully cut the material. This method is suitable if the repair is carried out in the apartment of an old house, the walls of which cannot be perfectly flat. The main thing is not to rush, so as not to accidentally cut off the excess.

How to lay linoleumdo it yourself: fixing the cover

As already mentioned, for small spaces the question of whether it is necessary to glue linoleum is not relevant. But if you need to fix the joints, then double-sided tape is perfect for this. To do this, draw a line along one of the pieces. This line will show you where the middle of the tape should go. Having glued it in the right place, it remains only to remove the protective paper, and then alternately lay both sheets on top, ensuring reliable gluing of the linoleum and scotch tape.

For the rest, fixing linoleum involves installing baseboards: old, if you decide to leave them, or new ones that were bought specifically for this purpose. In general, the skirting boards perfectly press the linoleum, providing it with quite a decent fixation, but in this case it is not recommended to drag heavy furniture across the floor. Although, the glued linoleum may not withstand excessive loads.

Important! In some sources, you can find recommendations that linoleum should be left to lie down without fixing for a long time, for example, a month. In fact, there is no real need for this, since PVC linoleum made according to modern technology, not subject to shrinkage.

As wellhow to glue linoleum to the floor: when is it necessary

There are several answers to the question of how to glue linoleum. Let's consider each of them, as well as get acquainted with the gluing technology and some of the nuances of this process.

What glue to glue linoleum on: options for adhesives

The first version of the composition for gluing linoleum is dispersion compositions. The list can include well-known to many AK, ADM-K, Bustilat and Gumilax. Also, their foreign counterparts are often used. These options are commonly used for fixing coverings that have an insulating backing or fabric backing. The composition is simply applied to the concrete base with a layer of 6-7 mm, and then linoleum is laid on top.

Another option is bituminous mastics and adhesives. Perhaps the most famous composition from this group is Bisky, although there are still many decent bitumen-polymer compositions. Usually a layer is applied with a thickness of 4-5 mm, and then, after waiting 15-20 minutes, the material is glued.

Sometimes special mastics are used, made on the basis of synthetic rubbers or resins. This group includes all kinds of oil, bitumen, as well as fine lacquer and casein-cement mortars. With their help, you can perfectly fix any alkyd linoleum without a backing. The mortar is evenly applied in a layer of 3-4 mm on the reverse side of the coating and on the base, using a spatula or brush for this.

In this case, gluing is not done immediately. First of all, the adhesive composition is applied to the subfloor, and then they wait for some time until the so-called "stickiness" occurs, that is, the weathering of excess solvent from the composition. Only after that, the mixture is applied to the reverse side of the linoleum and, after another 10-15 minutes, is glued.

In the first two cases, a notched metal or plastic spatula is used to apply the adhesive. In this case, the size of the teeth should be determined by the thickness of the layer you want to apply.

Important! If you are applying a synthetic based mastic, it is strongly not recommended to use a metal spatula for this, as this can lead to a fire.

All excess glue that will appear at the seams after the linoleum is glued must be removed. You can remove them with an old rag, but you need to do this right away to avoid drying out of the composition. If you used dispersion glue as a solution, then you can easily wash it off by hand with plain water. If you had to deal with mastic, then you can wipe it off with a solvent.

Whether it is worth smearing the entire surface of the coating or whether it will be enough to apply the composition only along the perimeter of each piece depends on the dimensions of the room. Of course, it is better not to save money and carefully glue maximum area... Although some experts argue that as an alternative to glue, you can use double-sided tape, gluing it around the perimeter of each linoleum element.

How to properly care for linoleum to extend its life

As already mentioned, the quality and technology of linoleum laying largely determines its service life. Therefore, having figured out how to glue linoleum, you should also ask how you need to take care of it. Here are some recommendations of specialists that will allow you to preserve the aesthetic appearance of the coating for a long time:

  • detergents containing a solvent or acetone are strictly prohibited to use in the process of caring for linoleum;

  • if, for any reason, the integrity of the coating has been damaged and a hole has appeared on the linoleum, you can make a patch in this place. But in this case, you should make sure that the pattern on the coating matches perfectly, and the seams are even and minimally noticeable;
  • it is worth taking care of the presence of a protective layer, which can be done using a special composition. It is applied to the surface and then carefully polished. This coating becomes thinner over time, so it needs to be renewed periodically (about 2-3 times a year).

How much does it cost to put linoleum: prices for materials and work

The question of the cost of certain renovation works always remains relevant. Of course, this is what determines the costs and largely decides which of the options you prefer. But it is difficult to unequivocally answer the question of the cost of such work, since a lot depends on what the linoleum is glued to, and what kind of material is in question.

The cheapest household linoleum will cost about 200 rubles per meter, but most likely such material will be thin enough and will not last too long. A more or less high-quality coating will cost about 400-500 rubles / m. It is important to understand that if you lay linoleum, the price of which is too low, then at the first load it is likely to be damaged, so you should not save too much.

Everyone can figure out how to glue linoleum without problems. This does not require special skills or abilities. You just need to take into account all the recommendations for the selection and installation of the coating, and then the new floor will delight you with its appearance for many years. Of course, a particularly durable and reliable material will cost much more, but everyone must decide on the advisability of such an investment independently.
