Potentilla white erect - herbaceous plant growing to a height of twenty-five centimeters. It has a thick scaly rhizome. Blooms from May to June. Distributed from the center of Europe to the waters of the Volga. It is unpretentious to the soil, loves light forests and small copses, edges and sunny grassy slopes overgrown with shrubs. In some European countries, it is close to extinction and is listed in the book of rare plants of the regions. All parts of this plant are used medicinally. Its root is used most often for the manufacture of alcohol tinctures, and for the preparation of decoctions and medicinal infusions, both seeds and white flowers, as well as stems and roots, are taken.

The biological composition of the white cinquefoil

Potentilla white erect has a very valuable property to accumulate and concentrate trace elements. So, its composition (especially in the underground part) includes many chemical elements. Among them are aluminum and iron, silicon and cobalt, a lot of manganese and copper, as well as zinc. This allows the extract made from cinquefoil roots to compensate for the deficiency of these substances in the body, thereby normalizing the mineral balance and salt metabolism, which helps fight metabolic disorders and rheumatic changes.

The biological components contained in the composition of white cinquefoil (phenol carbonic acids and flavanoids) stimulate the activity of the immune system, stabilize the work of the central nervous system, tone the body and help to cope with chronic stress. The roots of the plant are rich in tannins, so the extract based on them has an excellent astringent effect and antibacterial properties. Decoctions and infusions, as well as tinctures prepared from various parts of the cinquefoil plant, are often used as mouth rinses for acute sore throat and tonsillitis, to eliminate various kinds stomatitis, and their ingestion is indicated for diarrhea and inflammatory-erosive diseases of the digestive system.

Due to the fact that white cinquefoil does not contain hormone-like substances, but has a large supply of iodic acid and active iodine, preparations based on it normalize the functioning of the thyroid gland. The concentrate, made from the stems, as well as the rhizomes of the plant, is able to constrict blood vessels, strengthen small capillaries well and reduce the permeability of the vascular wall, relax muscle fibers during convulsions and stop attacks of severe suffocation.

  • Pathology of the heart and blood vessels.
  • Shortness of breath, irregular heartbeat.
  • Low hemoglobin.
  • Recovery period after heart attacks and hemorrhagic strokes.
  • Severe liver damage.
  • Atherosclerotic changes in blood vessels.
  • Liquid formations of intracavitary organs, benign tumors of the uterus.
  • Instability of menstruation, too painful menstruation, increased sweating.

Contraindications to the use of Potentilla white

This plant has no poisonous properties and cannot cause poisoning or overdose. But taking into account the fact that the extract from its roots has a potent effect, before taking it, you should consult with a phytotherapeutist in order to identify contraindications to its use. On an individual basis, the doctor will select the dosage of the drug, taking into account all concomitant pathologies. The elderly and children's (up to twelve years) age of the patient is the basis for the doctor's special attention to this patient during the period of her treatment. Potentilla white tincture, made on alcohol, is not used for the treatment of children.

All dosage forms, which include Potentilla erectus, are forbidden to be used by people with low blood pressure, which forms contraindications. Although they are not capable of causing fainting and collapse, they can significantly affect performance, causing drowsiness and unpleasant lethargy, dulling attention.

A large amount of astringents in the composition of Potentilla white, excludes its use by patients suffering from a tendency to constipation. This is the next type of contraindication.

The ability of this medicinal plant to constrict blood vessels and affect the permeability of the vascular wall forms the following contraindications to the use of cinquefoil, as it can adversely affect patients with a high prothrombin number, which can cause increased thrombus formation.

Preparation of medicinal tincture

To make a tincture, you need to take the dry root of the cinquefoil herb and crush it with a hammer, then grind it in a coffee grinder until a homogeneous powder is formed. Ready-to-use powder from Potentilla rhizomes can be purchased inexpensively at a pharmacy; it is also suitable for making vodka tinctures.

Fifty grams of the powder prepared in this way should be placed in a darkened bottle and add half a liter of factory vodka or medical alcohol diluted to forty degrees. Let it brew for three to four weeks in a dark place, at an ambient temperature of no more than twenty-three degrees, periodically shaking the bottle.

When the white extract turns dark brown and acquires a tart smell and a specific pleasant taste, treatment can begin. It is not necessary to filter and pour the resulting tincture, the longer it is infused, the more concentrated the extract will be.

Application:

Add twenty to thirty drops of tincture to a small amount of boiled water, drink twenty to thirty minutes before meals. Take for a month, then take a break for one week and repeat the course again. After another week's rest, another month of taking the tincture.

If the medicine in the bottle is over, it is necessary to fill the thick with half of the original volume of vodka (two hundred and fifty milliliters) and hold for two weeks. Get a secondary tincture. It is also taken two or three times a day, but forty to fifty drops at a time. The last time the sediment is poured with 125 milliliters of vodka and allowed to brew for a week, and the dose is increased to 60-100 drops at a time. This method of preparing a medicinal tincture allows you to maintain a constant concentration of active ingredients in the preparation.

The tincture may be recommended by the herbalist in a different order, when the duration of the course is increased to five weeks at the same dose, and the break is increased to two months, after which the course of treatment is repeated. In any case, the use of medicinal herbs is long-term. Therefore, to judge whether Potentilla white erect is effective should not be earlier than a year from the start of treatment, although the first positive changes will appear after the end of two courses of treatment.

The use of cinquefoil white with thyroid gland

The consequence of the Chernobyl tragedy was an unprecedented increase in thyroid diseases. But the inhabitants of Polissya, who traditionally use white cinquefoil and its root for making tea, softened this effect for themselves. Due to the fact that the concentration of iodine in this plant is high, and besides, it has an irreplaceable ability to remove toxins from the body, people who regularly use it for food have reduced the manifestations of radiation contamination. The positive effect of Potentilla white on the work of the endocrine system is actively used in the treatment of various endocrine diseases.

To do this, use a tincture made from the roots of Potentilla. It is she who has the maximum therapeutic effect. In other elements of the plant, the concentration of active substances is insufficient.

Potentilla tincture is used for:

  1. Increased functional activity of the thyroid gland (thyrotoxicosis)
  2. Overgrowth (hyperplasia) of the thyroid gland
  3. Preventive treatment of persons exposed to radiation or other adverse factors
  4. Goiter (an enlarged thyroid gland caused by an insufficient amount of iodine in foods).

For effective treatment it is necessary to calculate the optimal dose of Potentilla tincture and the duration of the course. It takes into account the stage of the disease, the presence of cardiovascular pathology, the age of the patient. The most commonly used scheme is where the drug is taken in monthly courses of twenty to thirty drops three to four times a day, with breaks for two months. The duration of treatment is up to one year.

It is possible to combine taking tincture of Potentilla with the use of hormonal drugs. With such complex treatment, it is possible to significantly reduce the dose of hormones received, without compromising the therapeutic effect. And then stop using them altogether.

Procurement of raw materials

Potentillae rhizomata (Potentillae rhizomata) is used as a medicinal raw material. They are dug up during flowering, cleaned of roots, washed from the ground and dried in the open air, in ventilated rooms or in dryers.

Chemical composition

The pharmacological properties of Potentilla erectus depend on the biologically active substances contained in the plant. Rhizomes contain up to 30% tannins, glycoside tormentilin; triterpenoids (up to 6%): quinic acid, tormentoside; resins, crystalline ether tormentol; phenolcarboxylic acids: gallic, quinic, ellagic, caffeic, n-coumaric, protocatechin, flavonoids (kaempferol), flobafens; phenols (fluroglucinol, pyrocatechin, pyrogallol); catechin, wax, gum, starch, macro- and microelements.

Pharmacological properties

A decoction of the rhizomes of Potentilla erectus has astringent, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, bactericidal effect, and also has an expectorant and choleretic effect.

It has been established that aqueous extracts from Potentilla rhizomes have antimicrobial, antiprotozoal and fungicidal activity. The antimicrobial effect of the decoction when exposed to it chemical compounds peculiar to the intestinal microflora. Its action is softer and more physiological, since the biologically active substances of the plant are in essence and resistance of pathogenic pathogens does not develop to them. A decoction of Potentilla rhizomes is used in the treatment of diseases associated with functional bowel disorders. In this case, the inflamed intestinal mucosa is protected from irritation and damage by microbial and other adverse agents, the elimination of an acute inflammatory reaction, the normalization of intestinal motor function, the suppression of pathogenic intestinal flora and the restoration of eubiosis in the intestine.

The general anti-inflammatory effect is associated with the action of flavonoids, and the local effect is associated with tannins that can create a biological film that protects tissues from bacterial, chemical and mechanical influences that accompany inflammation, while at the same time capillary permeability decreases and blood vessels narrow.

In the gastroenterological department of the Clinical Diagnostic Center No. 1 in Moscow, studies were carried out on the pharmacological properties of the rhizomes of Potentilla erectus. There were 60 people under observation. The first group included patients with functional bowel diseases (irritable bowel syndrome) and with organic diseases (chronic enterocolitis). All patients had diarrhea. The second group consisted of patients with erosive and ulcerative processes in the stomach and duodenum, the third group - with chronic active gastritis. The fourth group was a control group and, unlike the first three, received only medications, without cinquefoil.

When using the plant in the group of patients receiving Potentilla erectus as monotherapy, there was a fairly rapid disappearance of diarrhea or its decrease. The pain syndrome also significantly decreased to 5% (before treatment it was 54%), such dyspeptic disorders as nausea, bitterness in the mouth, belching, vomiting, as well as bleeding gums and rectal bleeding significantly decreased.

Diarrhea in the control group without the use of cinquefoil was stopped in 12 of 30 patients (40%), with the use of cinquefoil erect in 24 of 30 patients studied (80%).

Also, due to the increased interest in Helicobacter pylori infection, tests were carried out to identify Helicobacter pylori in patients of all four groups of patients before and after treatment with cinquefoil rhizomes. The results showed that Helicobacter pylori was absent in 16 out of 19 studied patients suffering from chronic active gastritis and erosive and ulcerative lesions of the stomach and duodenum before taking this phytopreparation, and in the control group of patients, Helicobacter pylori was absent in 8 out of 21 people.

Thus, Potentilla erectus can be used both as monotherapy and in combination with other drugs without disturbing their metabolism. This plant is well tolerated by all patients, regardless of age. The introduction of Potentilla erectus into the treatment of antiulcer therapy accelerates the time of epithelialization and significantly increases the efficiency of eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection. However, given the presence of a large amount of tannins, it is necessary to remember the drying effect of Potentilla on the mucous membranes.

Application in traditional medicine

In folk medicine, decoction, infusion, tea and tincture of Potentilla are used. Potentilla erectus was used primarily as an astringent, expectorant and analgesic. Potentilla rhizome is an ancient folk remedy used in the treatment of gastritis, stomach ulcers, various internal bleeding (pulmonary, gastric, intestinal, uterine). With diarrhea and dysentery, they drank tea from the roots of Potentilla. A decoction of rhizomes was taken for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, insufficient acidity of gastric juice.

It was also used externally as an ointment for burns, frostbite, weeping eczema, as well as for rinsing with sore throat and scurvy. Potentilla was also used for jaundice, liver diseases, gout, and as part of the fees - for kidney diseases, Bladder and prostate adenomas.

There is evidence of the effectiveness of infusions and decoctions from the leaves, stems and flowers of Potentilla in the treatment of patients with acute and chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver with congestion (edema, ascites).

Potentilla has found application in other countries. In Bulgaria, Potentilla infusion is used as a choleretic agent for gastritis and peptic ulcer with low acidity, as well as in the form of applications for hemorrhoids.

The German National Health Service recommends using galangal inside for diarrhea, externally for rinsing and irrigating the mouth with inflammation of the gums and mucous membranes.

History reference

Potentilla erectus has always been popular with the Russian people. However, it is known to many as galangal. The people have other names for this plant: elm-grass, ovary root, zavyaznik, derevyanka, drevlyanka, whisperer, dubrovka, oak root, umbilical grass, diarrhea grass, uzik, spool, etc. Traditions about this plant have been preserved. One of them is connected with Ilya Muromets. It says that before the battle with the Nightingale the Robber, the hero found a large thicket of “whisper” grass, inhaled the smell of its roots and felt immeasurable strength in himself.

In the Middle Ages, the medicinal properties of Potentilla erectus were highly valued, as it was almost the only remedy for dysentery. In ancient reference books, cinquefoil is also mentioned in combination with other medicinal herbs. In the “Ethnobotanical Notes” by H. Marcellus, the following is said about Potentilla: during the plague of 1348-1349 in the Baden Valley, a bird flew from the sky to people and sang: “Whoever eats a galangal and a thigh will delay his end.”

Thank you

plant galangal ( bloodroot erect) has been used since ancient times as a remedy for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. This plant is superior in its therapeutic effect to such modern drugs as aspirin and penicillin. About what forms of galangal preparations to use for certain diseases, what properties this plant has, as well as what contraindications to its use exist, and will be discussed in this article.

Description of the plant Kalgan (Potentilla erect)

On the territory of Russia, there are about 150 species of cinquefoil, but the most valuable of them is considered to be erect cinquefoil. This rose-scented plant is characterized by a horizontal, thick, woody rhizome with numerous roots.

The flowering time of galangal is the end of May - the beginning of September. The fruits of the plant ripen between June and July, that is, three weeks after flowering.

The plant grows in meadows, pastures, as well as in sparse coniferous forests, on the outskirts of swamps and along water bodies.

Kalgan in folk medicine

Kalgan is widely used in folk medicine in the treatment of the following diseases of the digestive tract:
  • stomach ulcer;
  • duodenal ulcer;
  • enterocolitis;
  • cholecystitis;
  • diarrhea.
In addition, galangal preparations help to cope with diseases of the liver, lungs, throat, mouth and ears.

External use of galangal is indicated for such skin diseases:

  • weeping eczema;
  • skin cracks;
  • burns;
  • haemorrhoids;
  • inflammatory processes;
Since ancient times, decoctions and tinctures from galangal have been used as an astringent, anti-inflammatory, choleretic and hemostatic agent for intestinal and uterine bleeding. Today, this plant has found its application in the treatment of hemorrhoids (microclysters) and trichomonas colpitis (douching).

In addition, in folk medicine, Potentilla erectus is used in the treatment of the following pathologies:

  • angina;
  • thyroid disease;
  • gout;
  • renal and intestinal colic;
  • inflammation of the nasopharynx;
  • insomnia;
  • bronchitis;
  • rheumatism;
  • jaundice;

The benefits of galangal

Galangal (namely, its seeds) is used in herbal medicine to treat malaria, dysentery, and cholera.

It should be noted that the use of decoctions, tinctures and tea from galangal helps to strengthen human immunity. According to oriental medicine, regular use of fresh galangal root significantly stimulates the so-called internal heat of a person (in other words, warms the stomach), thereby normalizing digestive processes and speeding up metabolism.

Collection and storage

For medical purposes, galangal rhizomes are used, dug up during the death of all above-ground parts (this happens in September - October), or in April - May (before the appearance of new root leaves).

After harvesting, the rhizomes are cleaned from the ground, washed and slightly scraped (adventitious roots must be removed). The cleaned raw material is cut into small pieces, after which it is dried in the shade, but always in the open air (special dryers can be used to dry the rhizomes, the temperature in which should be 60 degrees). I must say that such a "quick" drying is not typical for the harvesting of medicinal plants, but the galangal root is one of the exceptions, since with quick drying it retains much more useful substances than with slow drying.

Important! Before you start drying the galangal, you need to cut the root of the plant into pieces of 5 mm, because the dried root becomes almost stone, as a result of which it will be extremely difficult to separate it later.

Best before date raw material is 4 years. Dried galangal has a slight aromatic smell. Repeated preparations of galangal at the same place can be carried out after 6-7 years.

Treatment with galangal

Kalgan drugs are used in the treatment of cirrhosis, as well as hepatitis occurring in the chronic and acute stages.

Thanks to the reception of galangal, patients experience the following improvements:

  • reduction of puffiness;
  • reduction of fluid accumulation in the abdominal area;
  • increased diuresis;
  • normalization of the content of bilirubin in the blood.
Potentilla erectus is used as a douche for whites, while for stomatitis and inflammation of the gums, it is recommended to rinse the mouth with a decoction of the plant.

This plant effectively reduces elevated body temperature, therefore it is used in the treatment of colds and inflammatory diseases. In addition, galangal is one of the components of the kidney, stomach and antidiarrheal fees.

Root

Potentilla erect rhizomes have astringent and hemostatic properties, due to which, in the form of decoctions, they are used as an antidiarrheal and bactericidal agent in the treatment of inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, as well as internal bleeding of various origins. Also, galangal preparations are recommended for inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity.

Grass

Galangal grass (leaves, stems and inflorescences) are used in the treatment of acute and chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis of the liver, accompanied by congestion, including edema and ascites. Also, the herb is an effective anthelmintic agent.

From the leaves of the plant, infusions are prepared for the treatment of hemorrhoidal bleeding and hemoptysis, gingivitis and laryngitis.

The use of galangal

The main mechanism of the therapeutic effect of galangal lies in the ability of tannins and flavonoids, which are part of the plant, to significantly reduce the permeability of both capillaries and the cell membranes themselves.

Due to its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, this plant is widely used in the treatment of the following pathologies:

  • haemorrhoids;
  • burns;
  • difficult healing purulent wounds;
  • eczema;
  • neurodermatitis;
  • skin cracks.
In order to strengthen the gums, it is recommended to put a small piece of dried galangal root under the tongue and dissolve it for 15 minutes twice a day.

The composition and properties of galangal

Vitamin C

It is a strong antioxidant, thanks to which oxidized products that negatively affect healthy cells are removed from the body.

It is vitamin C that takes part in the process of restoration of liver cells, not to mention the normalization of the pancreas. It is also important that ascorbic acid (or vitamin C) removes harmful compounds that provoke the development of malignant tumors in the gastrointestinal tract.

Starch

Thanks to this easily digestible carbohydrate, which is converted into glucose, the body is quickly saturated with the energy necessary for the normal functioning of all organs and systems, including the heart.

Gum

Preparations containing gum, as follows affect the body:
  • reduce the negative impact caused by taking certain medications;
  • reduce cholesterol levels;
  • reduce appetite;
