The overpass replaces the viewing hole. Its presence allows for inspection and minor repairs machines on your own.

Depending on the type of the car itself, its size and the size of the overpass itself, its type is determined. You can make both stationary and collapsible. How to make a flyover for a car with your own hands is easy to learn.

Process of creation

1. First you need to decide on the type of flyover. If the size of the garage or suburban area allow, then you can make stationary.

2. The collapsible version is suitable for those motorists who are limited by certain parameters.

3. A complete inspection of the car is available only on a stationary overpass.

4. Partial can be carried out on a collapsible overpass.

5. Before selling a car, it is still better to entrust the inspection to specialists, for example, from.

The stationary overpass is made of bricks, wood, metal pipes. It can rise up to a meter above the ground.

To create a stationary metal overpass, you will need tools such as:

  • welding machine;
  • Bulgarian;
  • fasteners;
  • dye.

Basic Steps

  1. The overpass can be made using pipes that must be concreted into the ground. You will get 4 or 6 columns.
  2. Corners are installed over the pipes.
  3. between them with welding machine rebars are installed.
  4. Check-in is obliquely fixed.
  5. The places for the wheels must have stops that will not allow the car to move off on its own.
  6. metal structure it is necessary to cover it with anti-corrosion paint so that nothing rusts.

If there is no place for such a design, then it makes sense to learn how to make a simple overpass for a car.

There are several options for small collapsible structures:

  • one-sided pyramid;
  • "rocking chair";
  • flip;
  • from sleepers.

The very first type is made of boards and beams in such a way that one end is a plane and the other is a ladder. The boards are cut into equal parts about 30 cm long. The bars are cut into pieces different lengths, boards will be attached to them from above. Between themselves, both pyramids are fastened with metal rails so that they do not part.

A "rocking chair" can be made by almost any motorist. To do this, you will need two boards on which bars are installed at the edge and closer to the middle, but with an offset to the edge. When a car drives onto a structure, its center of gravity shifts and it is raised.

How to make a flyover for a car based on sleepers is very simple, just lay two sleepers that continue each other, boards are placed on them, which are a platform.

This building with your own hands can be built from almost all improvised materials.

Boards can be rested anywhere, so the question of how to make a flyover for a car yourself should not cause difficulties.

by the most affordable option will become: place a sawn piece of log of the desired height on the board, fix another board on it at an angle, fix everything - half of the structure is ready. The second half is done in the same way.

There are flyovers made of bricks, but they cannot be moved from place to place, so they are stationary.

All dimensions must match the specific vehicle. It is best if the width of the race is slightly larger than the size of the wheel. This will eliminate the risk of a “miss” and damage to the vehicle. Be sure to have stops for the car so that it does not move off the platform.

It is not difficult to make a flyover for car repair with your own hands, if any free time and minimal technical skills. All measurements must be carried out carefully so that the flyover is suitable for a specific car.

If you are the owner of your car and garage, while you prefer to at least occasionally look under your car yourself, then the following is for you. Usually, inexperienced drivers prefer to carry out inspections only at service stations and give their hard-earned money to "specialists", but even minor work on changing oil, consumables, monitoring the condition of your car's units and mechanisms can save your budget. A flyover made in the garage with your own hands is the best way out of this situation.

Let's look at the survey statistics on the topic, is it difficult. 66% of respondents answered that it is quite simple; 14% think it's simple, but with minor problems; 16% said it is not easy and skills in this area will be required; for 4% this is a very difficult task.

Depending on the size of the garage and the model of the car, you can choose a flyover option that will meet your needs.

Overpasses can be divided into 2 types:

  • for full arrival of the car;
  • for partial lifting of the car.

The first type will provide more comfortable conditions car maintenance work than the second.

Overpass options for full vehicle arrival

Such a statement would be correct in terms of the meaning of the word. But the function of the pit is the same as that of the overpass - to provide access to the bottom of the car.

The advantage of the pit is that it won't take usable space garage.

If the level ground water in the area where your garage is located is high, then it is not advisable to consider the issue of a viewing hole.

Otherwise, you will have to do extra drainage system(which is very troublesome and expensive), and the bottom of your car will be subject to constant corrosion due to moisture that will collect in the pit.

As a result, you will have to fall asleep and consider other options.

brick flyover

This option is suitable for those who have a garage in countryside or at the cottage. This design is carried out by the usual laying of bricks on cement mortar- according to the width of the distance between the wheels of the car in the form of a trapezoid.

The disadvantages of this type of overpass are obvious: a site is needed for its construction; brick can collapse over time; if it is necessary to free the site, then the dismantling of the structure will require considerable effort and time from you.

Overpass of railway sleepers

Such an overpass is assembled from several railway sleepers, like a children's designer.

You can lay out 2 bases by laying the sleepers one on top of the other in the form of a slide. Across lay the track for the race.

To prevent the structure from moving apart during the repair of your car, it must be fastened with brackets. The disadvantages of this overpass are obvious.

Firstly, not everyone has sleepers in stock. Secondly, the sleepers are very heavy, it will not be possible to assemble and disassemble such a structure alone. Thirdly, after completing the automobile repair work need a lot of storage space for sleepers.

Of course, if you are building this structure on garden plot you can leave them under open sky. The sleepers are usually impregnated with creosote, which prevents the wood from rotting.

Metal variant

If the previous options are possible subject to availability land plot, then the metal overpass can be considered as a universal one - it can also be used in urban conditions.

For its manufacture, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • rolled metal products;
  • welding machine;
  • fittings;
  • grinder with cutting wheels;
  • bolts with nuts;
  • metal paint.

If desired, you can make the overpass collapsible. This will save space by quickly assembling it if necessary.

Its design is quite simple. It is necessary to assemble 4 base racks approximately 50 cm high. To ensure stability, it is better to assemble the sides in the shape of a trapezoid and connect them with crossbars of the same length.

For this, a 63 corner (5 mm thick) is suitable. For the manufacture of bridges, you can use a 40 corner (thickness 4 mm) and reinforcement (12 mm is suitable).

The bridges are a metal ladder. It will be necessary to make 2 bridges for arrival and 2 bridges on which the car will stand during the repair. You can calculate the minimum length of the latter yourself by measuring the distance between the centers of the wheels of your car and adding a small allowance.

After the individual elements are ready, it is necessary to fasten them with bolts. In order to provide additional rigidity to the entire structure, you can combine the racks with each other. Bolted connection will allow short time assemble or disassemble the entire structure.

Garage flyover device

With a complete shortage of space, a way out of the situation can be found in the manufacture of mini-flyovers. They belong to overpasses for partial lifting of the car. Of course, working in this case will be less comfortable than with the options discussed above, but much more convenient than under a car raised by a jack.

Several options for mini-flyovers

The most elementary version of a mini-overpass can be made of wood.

To do this, you need a board (you can take a thickness of 50 mm), which is wider than the wheels, and wooden lath square section (for example, 100x100 mm). The height of the cross section will determine how high the car can rise. With the settings recommended above wooden products lift height will be 150 mm.

The structure is assembled as follows.

  1. A bar is attached to the back of the board from above, which will perform the function of limiting the wheel travel. 2 square bars are attached to the bottom part: one is a little further than the middle, the second is on the edge of the board. The structure is ready.
  2. You need at least 2 such devices (or 4 if you need to raise the entire car above the ground). Such a mini-overpass works very simply. When you put the structure under the wheel of your car, it rests on the ground at 2 points: the front edge of the board and a bar, which is fixed not far from the middle.
  3. As the wheels of the car hit the board and the center of gravity moves closer to the rear edge of the board, the front edge will rise and the rear edge will drop. Since the supports were made of a bar with the same section, the board will take a horizontal position.
  4. At the same time, the length of the board should be such that it does not hit the bottom of your car. It remains to fix the wheels that remained on the ground with stops-blocks. As you can see, such a flyover is very easy to make with your own hands. You can make a mini-flyover from metal. Its design will resemble the metal overpass discussed above, only in a smaller version. It also consists of supports on which bridges are attached.
  5. It is desirable to weld limiters along the edges of the bridges. This will keep your car from slipping.
  6. One bridge is located at an angle from the ground for arrival, the other is horizontal (when viewed from the side of the structure, the contour will be a trapezoid). You can focus on the following dimensions: base length - 80 cm; the length for the race is about 45 cm, the width of the bridges is about 40 cm. The entire structure can be assembled from a 25 mm corner (less is not recommended). Approximate weight designs will be 20-30 kg. At the rear, a travel stop for the wheel must be welded.

A more complex, but effective version of a mini-flyover can be made according to the swing-rocking principle. To assemble it you will need welding work. It will be necessary to make 2 frames in the shape of an isosceles triangle. The width of the frames is selected depending on the width of the wheels of your car, and the length of the bridge - depending on the length of the car.

To ensure the rigidity of the frame structure, it is necessary to fasten it together. For the stability of the structure, it is necessary to use spacers under the side that will be above the ground. In this case, it should be borne in mind that for greater stability, the center of gravity of the car should be closer to the top of the isosceles triangle.

When working on overpasses, you should always remember to observe safety measures. The car must be put on the hand brake, fix the wheels with blocks-stops.

Let's summarize. Have you considered various options and approaches on how to make a flyover with your own hands. Depending on the free space you have at your disposal, materials, finances and desire, you can choose any option for your garage.

It can be both a solid structure and a collapsible version of a metal overpass. It may be enough for you to make a wooden mini-flyover. In any case, the choice will be yours.

If you don't have viewing hole for a car, you can replace it with a flyover made by hand in the garage or in your country house. To do this, you will need a couple of sleepers and some thick boards or some scrap metal, a welding machine and a grinder. Of course, a pit in the garage is more convenient, but different reasons not every garage can equip it. The proximity of underground utilities or groundwater can interfere, and then, if you want to repair your personal car, the built overpass with your own hands will be the way out for you.

Types of flyovers

Depending on the size, flyovers for cars are of two types:

  1. To access one vehicle axle.
  2. To enter the whole car.

Mini flyover The first category is usually collapsible and requires a small amount of material in order to make it with your own hands. It is mobile, but not as convenient for do-it-yourself car repairs as a full-size one. The inconvenience of a mini overpass lies in the fact that, due to its small height, do-it-yourself machine repair with its help is far from being full-length.

There are two types of devices that give access to the front and rear of the machine at the same time:

  • Installed on level ground. Entry to their site for repair occurs at best at an angle of about 30 ° to the horizontal.
  • Situated on a slope. Entrance to them occurs without lifting up (horizontally).

For those wishing to make a mini overpass for car repair with their own hands, we present the simplest design, for the repetition of which drawings are not needed.

So, to make the simplest mini flyover for a car with your own hands, you need to lay two pairs of sleepers in pairs with side surfaces to each other and connect the sleepers of each pair to each other using steel brackets. Flip them over with the staples facing down and cut one end of each pair at an angle of about 30° to the horizontal for ease of driving onto them. Lay the pairs parallel to each other, according to the gauge of your car, cut ends to one side. The portable mini flyover is ready. The height of such a structure is regulated by placing boards of suitable thickness under the rectangular ends of the sleepers. To prevent the car from rolling off the overpass, make shoes from scraps of boards and put them under the wheels when repairing. In order not to fall from the structure when entering it, attach two trimming boards to the ends of the sleepers so that they stick up a little.

To work under the car on such a flyover, be sure to get a piece of thick felt or at least an old wadded blanket. Don't leave your health on the concrete floor.

To those who say that a car can be raised to such a height, I will object that if thick bars are placed under it, then not every jack raises so much, and secondly, it is much safer than on a jack.

Full size design

For those who do not want to endure the inconvenience when repairing their car, we offer to make a full-size version with your own hands. It will be more convenient for you to enter it if you build it on a slope. Yes, and the boards will go less. So it makes sense to look for a place on the slope for her. Of course, it is better to make a flyover from metal: it is stronger, does not absorb oil and does not rust as quickly as wood rots. But if you have a tree in stock, then the choice of material is obvious, do not buy the same rental.

metal installation

Two supports can be used. steel pipes with a diameter of at least 150 mm. They should be buried in the ground below the level of its freezing, otherwise the height of the flyover will increase with the onset of winter, and decrease in spring. After installing the supports, the pits should be rammed with broken bricks, and it is better to concrete. If the depth of soil freezing in your area is small, deepen the supports into the ground at least a meter. The height of the supports above the ground depends on your height, but should not be lower than 1.5 meters.

They should be installed at a distance of about 5 meters from the proposed entrance to the flyover, and at a distance from each other equal to the track of your car. From above, on the supports with the ribs down, lay a section of the channel about 150 mm wide, its length should be 50 cm more than the track width of your car. Weld the channel to the supports. After that, for the lateral stability of the structure, connect the supports crosswise with two corners. Lay four corners with ribs at least 7.5 cm long about 5 m in pairs parallel to each other with ribs, and fill the space between each pair with pieces of reinforcement 50 cm long and weld them to each, observing a right angle. Put the resulting ladders so that one side of each is on the edge of the channel, and the other on the ground. Check their horizontalness with a level. And also set the width between the centers of the edges lying on the ground, which should be equal to the track of your car. Weld them to the channel, and to them stops to prevent falling vehicle, and congratulations, you have welded a flyover of steel with your own hands.

Features of a wooden structure

  • Instead of a pipe as supports, two pieces of timber with a section of at least 15 × 15 cm are used.
  • Parts of the supports dug into the ground, for durability, must be impregnated with creosote or at least mining.
  • Each ladder should be assembled from two boards 5 cm thick, one of them 10 to 15 cm wide should be placed on the edge. The other one, about 40 cm wide, is laid flat on top and nailed to the first one with a hundred nails or screwed with screws.
  • In each timber, it is necessary to make one cut with a width of 5 cm and a depth in accordance with the width of the boards placed on the edge. Cuts are made in order to insert the lower boards of the ladders into them. The crossbar to the supports should not be attached from above to the ends, but in front just below the ladder board coming out of the cut.
  • The stops can be made by screwing two trimming blocks to the supports with self-tapping screws, so that they stick out above the ladders.
  • To reduce the likelihood of wheels slipping from the edges of the ladders, it is desirable to make ribs. One option is to attach a board about 2 cm thick and 10 cm wide to the end of the top board of the ladder. It is better to fix it with self-tapping screws with flat caps 50 mm long.
  • Below the crossbar, for lateral stability of the support structure, it is necessary to fasten together crosswise with two boards.

Every car owner knows that the main "sores" of the car are hidden in two places: in the engine compartment and under the bottom. You can get to the engine by opening the hood. But fixing the suspension or removing the transmission without getting under the body will not work.

To perform work under the bottom of the car, you can use a pit, lift or overpass. The pit can only be built in dry ground, so it is not available in all garages.

A lift is an expensive pleasure that a repair shop can afford. As a result, for an ordinary motorist, there remains a home-made overpass for a car that does not require high costs and build time.

In this article, we will consider the most popular and affordable structures for manufacturing, as well as describe step by step the process of their design and installation.

The main types of car overpasses

Depending on the budget and the complexity of the repair, there are two types of overpass structures:

  • They allow you to raise only one axle of the car (front or rear).
  • Full-size (designed for the entry of the entire car).

The first option is economical and convenient. The mini-overpass for partial arrival has small dimensions and weight. It is easy to install on a flat area and removed after the repair is completed. The main disadvantage is that it is not as convenient in operation as a full-size design, since the car lift here does not exceed 50-60 centimeters.

The full-length version is more expensive and more difficult to implement, but gives the car owner simultaneous access to all body units. We note in passing that, regardless of the type of flyover, for its high-quality manufacturing, you need to make a drawing, and during assembly, accurately maintain the dimensions of the structure.

Three groups of sizes are especially important:

  • height and width of supporting bollards "chairs";
  • ladder length (entrance and horizontal);
  • ladder width.

In addition, attention should be paid to the docking points of ladders with pedestals. They must support the weight of the vehicle without deforming.

Popular flyover options for auto repair

The simplest type of mini-flyover is two pairs of scraps knocked together wooden beam with a section of 20x20 cm. By cutting off the edge of such an impromptu support at an oblique angle, we will get a solid platform that can be driven into by the front end or by passing the car back (photo No. 1).

Photo 1. Two timber trimming - the simplest lifting device for repairs

The disadvantages of such a support are obvious: there are no sides to protect against side slippage of the wheels on the beam, which requires the driver to be extremely careful when entering. There is no rear bumper here, which will prevent an accidental exit. The height of the stand is insufficient for easy access to the bottom.

There is a better option wooden support for simple repairs. Such a flyover in the country is made from scraps of boards, sequentially knocked down into a wide shield. One side of it forms a stepped slope for entry (photo No. 2).

Photo No. 2 Mini-flyover from scraps of boards

This design has a breaker bar and two straps for carrying. Its width can be chosen so that you can drive in to inspect the car without the risk of breaking the wheels. The cost and complexity of manufacturing such a stand is minimal.

Most often, mini-flyovers are made of profile metal (pipes, angle and fittings). They are more durable and stronger than wood. You can see an example of such a design in photo No. 3.

Photo No. 3 Stand-trestle from the corner

Instead of a corner for the supporting part of the ladder, you can use fittings or a pipe. By extending the horizontal ladder by 1 meter, we will get a more convenient mini-flyover. Using it, you can get to most of the units located under the bottom of the body (photo No. 4).

The review of compact structures is completed by a mini-flyover for a collapsible type car. It occupies an intermediate position between portable and stationary options (photos No. 5, 6, 7).

Photo No. 5 Portable overpass assembled

An important feature of this design is the possibility of dismantling the horizontal ladders after the vehicle enters for easy access to the wheel arches and sills.

Photo No. 7 When disassembled, the universal overpass is completely placed in the garage

You can work lying or sitting under the car, but not very comfortable. Therefore, for regular repairs, a stationary high flyover is needed, assembled on a columnar foundation (photo No. 8).

Such a design, if necessary, will accept not only a passenger car, but also a small truck or bus.

How to make a collapsible overpass yourself?

The fabrication of the structure begins with the preparation of a detailed drawing. By doing it, you will be able to take into account and think through all the stages of the assembly, avoiding the mistakes inherent in hastily completed work.

The collapsible overpass should have the following dimensions:

  • The length of the entrance and horizontal ladder is equal to the length of the car + 1 meter.
  • The width of the ladder is at least 40 cm.
  • The height of the supporting pedestals is 70-80 cm.
  • The width of the upper part of the supporting bollards is equal to the width of the ladders.

In order to make the flyover durable, you should not save on metal. For ladders, you need to buy an equal-shelf corner of 63 mm. Supporting bollards "chairs" can be welded from a corner with a shelf width of 50 mm. The filling of the ladders is done with corrugated reinforcement with a cross section of at least 14 mm.

Without a welding machine, grinder and drill, it is better not to start work. In addition to the assembly tool, you need to prepare 12 pairs of bolts and nuts for attaching the ladders to the "high chairs".

Stages of work

The first step is the manufacture of supporting bollards. They need to be given a trapezoidal shape to increase stability. For precise assembly of the base and the upper part of the "high chair", the corners cut to size must be laid out on OSB board, fixing among themselves with the help of clamps or magnets of the welder.

First, the lower bases of all four supports are welded. Then they assemble the frames of the upper platforms and attach the legs from the corner to them. The final stage is the installation of the upper frames with legs in the lower supports and fixing them by welding.

Please note that on the assembly diagram, one of the corners of the upper frame is turned upside down and forms a bump to protect the wheels from falling off the overpass. On the end supports, you need to weld one more bump corner. They will not let the car move off the ramp.

In order to make the flyover with your own hands as stable as possible, you can install cross-links from a steel profile on it. It is bolted to the pedestals. This measure will not be superfluous, as it will increase the rigidity of the entire structure.

Horizontal and entry ladders are made from a 63 mm corner and reinforcing bars that act as a "ladder". The length of an inclined ladder for a passenger car must be at least 3 meters. The size of the horizontal section is chosen by adding 1 meter to the length of the car. The width of the ladders is at least 40 cm.

Before installing the reinforcing bars, the corners are turned over so that their shelves look up and serve as external side skirts. The "ladder" will turn out to be even if the profile is laid on a solid horizontal platform. Attaching it to concrete or asphalt is difficult. Therefore, two transverse angles can be used as a mounting base. Guide "ladders" are attached to them with clamps. Having done this operation, you can start the welding process. It will be more convenient to expose sections of profiled reinforcement using a 63 mm corner cut as a template.

Making an inclined ramp for car repair is slightly different from assembling a horizontal one. On it you need to leave a free end 10 cm long (without reinforcing bars), which will serve as a docking node. The vertical edge of the profile is cut with a grinder to a horizontal shelf. After that, it is necessary to bend the connecting ends.

If you don't have a bender but have a couple of heavy weight friends, ask them to climb up on a stand to counterbalance the bending force. Before this operation, you need to lay the entrance ladder horizontally, supporting its free end. Two holes are drilled in place in the supporting part of the profile and in the corner of the "high chair". Having fixed the ends of the "ladder" with bolted connections, it is tilted down to the ground with force. In the place where the profile was cut, a piece of steel plate must be welded to strengthen the support assembly.

The horizontal ladder is mounted by laying it on the pedestals. After that, holes for bolts are drilled in the bearing corners and the upper support profile of the pedestal. For a more reliable fastening of the overpass to the platform, lugs can be welded to the "high chairs". By fixing them with dowels to concrete or steel pins to the ground, you will protect yourself from displacement of parts of the overpass when a car enters it.

When making a test drive, pay attention to the behavior of the inclined "ladder". If it bends, then you will have to make two intermediate support frames and bolt them to the corners.
