Many people want to have modern metal-plastic windows in their house, and many have already installed them a long time ago. But in addition to installing a double-glazed window, you need to take care of finishing the opening. It is decorated with wood, stone, or simply plastered on a concrete surface. by the very the right option is the lining of the opening with plastic and the installation of a PVC window sill. We will tell you what advantages PVC finishing elements have, consider how to install plastic window sills and give detailed instructions by installation.

Advantages and disadvantages of PVC window sills

PVC window sills are very popular due to their durability and moisture resistance.

The popularity of plastic products is due to the fact that they have a lot of advantages over finishing elements made from other materials. The advantages of plastic window sills include:

  • attractive appearance;
  • ease of cleaning from dust and dirt;
  • long service life;
  • high strength, due to the presence of stiffeners;
  • harmlessness to health (PVC window sills are made from environmentally friendly and non-toxic materials);
  • high moisture resistance.

In addition, when fixing the product, mounting foam is used, which prevents the penetration of dampness into the room and, as a result, the appearance of mold in the house.

Plastic window sills also have disadvantages, but there are very few of them. So, PVC plates are prone to scratches in case of careless operation. Hot objects should also not be placed on them - this can lead to deformation of the surface and loss of beautiful view finishing element.

Installation methods

Installing a window sill with wooden linings is time-consuming, but this method is the most reliable.

There are several methods for installing PVC products. Let's consider each of them.

  • The first method, the oldest, involves fixing the element with a special composition. Nowadays, this method is used extremely rarely, as more convenient and reliable ones have appeared.
  • Most quick installation window sill is carried out using self-tapping screws. First, holes are drilled in the window frame, into which the hardware is screwed. The junction is treated with acrylic sealant, after which the edge of the window sill is brought under the double-glazed window and fixed with self-tapping screws. To give maximum rigidity to the plate, special linings are placed under it and the resulting place is blown out. mounting foam.
  • The next method involves the installation of PVC window sills using spring clips. These fasteners are screwed to the substitution profile of the product with self-tapping screws. After that, the plate is mounted in the groove formed between the window frame and the bracket, and the product is installed.
  • In the last version of the installation of plastic window sills, no fasteners(self-tapping screws and staples). This is the most time-consuming method, but also the most reliable. Its meaning is that the wedges are driven under the plate until its edge is pressed against the frame as tightly as possible.

Each method has its pros and cons. For example, it is undesirable to install a window sill using self-tapping screws near the opening sash. Installation options for PVC window sills differ only in the way the product is fixed under the frame. The remaining stages of work here are absolutely identical.

What will be required

Before proceeding to the installation, it is necessary to prepare materials and tools. As the first rule of professional builders says, the quality of work largely depends on the class of tools used. So, with good fixtures, it is easier to work, and their service life is longer. Especially when you consider that tools are likely to be needed in the future, since window sills are often installed under each window of a house or apartment. So, for work you may need the following materials and tools:

  • PVC window sill;
  • electric jigsaw, grinder;
  • mounting foam cylinder and a special gun;
  • building level, measuring tape, pencil;
  • self-tapping screws or staples (depending on the chosen method of installing the window sill);
  • wooden wedges (thin boards and the like);
  • chisel and hammer;
  • stationery knife;
  • spatula and primer.

Preparatory work

Taking measurements

The product should protrude no more than 8 cm

To qualitatively install any window sill, you must first take measurements. This moment is extremely important, because both the appearance and the strength of the future structure depend on it. Here, in addition to the properties and characteristics of a PVC product, many additional parameters should also be taken into account. For example, there must be a certain distance between the battery and the window sill. Otherwise, air circulation will be disturbed, which will lead to a deterioration in the microclimate in the room.

When taking measurements, it is worth remembering that the length of the installed plate should be slightly greater than the distance between the side slopes. The fact is that the product is inserted into the grooves made with a depth of 2-3 cm. As a rule, the window sill is mounted above the battery, so the size of the front protrusion of the plate should be no more than 8 cm. If this figure is greater, then the PVC plate will not allow hot air to rise from the radiator to the window. And this will lead to the formation of moisture. As for the vertical distance between the battery and the window sill, it should be more than 10 cm.

Due to the fact that the product is installed directly under the window, modern models equipped with a special profile with the possibility of fastening the ebb.

Trimming the window sill

In addition to a jigsaw, you can use a grinder or a special hacksaw to trim a plastic window sill.

In accordance with the measurements, cut the blank of the window sill of the required width and length. It is advisable to cut PVC products with a grinder. Using this power tool will allow you to achieve perfectly smooth edges. In the absence of a turbine, you can use a jigsaw. Less often, pruning of a PVC window sill is carried out with a hacksaw for plastic. But you need to cut it very carefully.

Do not apply too much pressure to the saw, as this may cause chips and cracks on the product.

When working with plastic, you need to remember the safety measures. This is a rather fragile material, so when it is intensively cut, small particles can fly out. Wear safety goggles and work gloves.

Window opening preparation

To make grooves for the window sill, use a chisel and a hammer

Immediately before installing the window sill, it is necessary to prepare the place of its installation. At this stage, grooves are made in the side slopes with a chisel and a hammer. After that, the installation site of the product is cleaned of debris and primed. Next, special spacers or wedges are attached to the window frame. They can be fixed gypsum mortar. Stands are used to set the slab at the correct level and at the required inclination. At the same time, keep in mind that the plate should be located at an angle of 1-2 degrees towards the room. So water from watering plants or condensate will drain, and not collect under the stove. Then attach the window sill and check how tight and even it becomes. Trim the edges if necessary.

Apply a layer of moisture-resistant primer to the installation site of the window sill

Important: If you find any gaps in the window opening, they must be blown out with mounting foam.

Assembly and installation instructions

Use a special gun to blow the mounting foam

As noted earlier, the fixation of the product can be performed in several ways. We will consider the latter - using wooden spacers and polyurethane foam, as it is the most reliable and very popular lately among people doing DIY repairs. The procedure is as follows:

  1. We insert the window sill into the prepared place. At the same time, we use the building level and wooden beacons, which we have in increments of no more than 80 cm.
  2. At the front end, we install supporting wooden blocks under the slab. The distance between them is no more than 50 cm. In this case, the bearing elements should not go beyond the plane of the wall. The distance from the blocks to the side slopes is 10 cm.
  3. Re-check the angle of inclination of the window sill with a level. If it does not correspond to the previously specified value, then adjust the pads in thickness.
  4. We blow out the hole between the slab and the concrete surface with mounting foam. But not completely, but only to fix the product.
  5. We evenly place the weight on the plate. This will prevent the foam from lifting the sill. It is important here not to overload the structure, as its surface may be deformed. Often, 3-4 tanks of water with a volume of 5 liters are used as cargo.
  6. We blow everything out free space under the window sill with mounting foam. Use a special gun so that the sealant does not splatter on the sides and does not get on clothes.
  7. After that, we leave the window sill alone for 2-3 days so that the foam completely hardens. Cut off excess binder with a clerical knife.
  8. In case of subsequent detection of cracks under the slab, treat them with acrylic sealant.
  9. At the final stage, plugs are installed on the ends of the window sill. To do this, use glue for PVC products. At the end, it remains only to remove the protective film from the product.
  10. Important: The window sill should fit tightly with the window frame, and the gap between the slab and the walls should not exceed 4 mm. "Ears" of the product (the part that protrudes internal slopes) should also be firmly pressed against the wall.

    Video instruction for installing a PVC window sill

    Installation of plastic window sills is not an easy job that requires appropriate knowledge and skills. When installing such products with your own hands, be careful and follow the above rules, because the price of a damaged PVC plate is much higher than the cost of its installation.

Window replacement usually means the installation of the double-glazed window itself and the installation of a window sill. Correctly inserting a window structure with glass into the opening alone is difficult, so it is better to entrust this part of the work to professionals.

And here is to install plastic window sill on their own is quite realistic. With a competent approach, the task is easy to do, plus, it will save part of the family budget.

For work you will need:

  • PVC window sill of the desired type.
  • Roulette.
  • Pencil.
  • Building level.
  • Jigsaw (circular saw).
  • Perforator.
  • Mounting foam.

The installation of a new plastic window sill should begin with determining the dimensions of the future structure.

How to take measurements and determine the size of the window sill

The width of the window sill is determined based on the thickness of the bearing wall. To do this, first make the appropriate measurements of the walls.

10-15 cm are added to the result obtained - the distance at which the window sill will protrude into the interior of the room and another 2 cm, which are necessary to deepen the structure under the double-glazed window.

The length of the plastic window sill is equal to the length of the window opening, plus an additional 5 cm. This is necessary so that the side parts of the plank go into the slopes, and the cutting parts are not visible.

Attention! The protrusion of the window sill above the heating radiator should not exceed 7 cm, otherwise a niche for insulating warm convection air will form in the window opening.

Purchase selection criteria

When choosing the right model of a plastic block, it should be borne in mind that the length standard for such products is in the range of 1.5-3 m, the width standard is 15-60 cm.

The length is determined depending on the size of the window opening horizontally with additional allowances for each side of 3-5 cm.

The width of the PVC window sill must correspond to the depth of the window opening, taking into account allowances for penetration under the double-glazed window and the protrusion of the block from the opening into the room.

Color, structure, decorative coating products are selected in accordance with the design of the window.

In this matter, it is not forbidden to be guided by personal preferences, since the quality of installation and performance characteristics products, these indicators do not affect.

Preparing for installation

The window sill should go beyond the boundaries of the window opening by 2-5 cm on one side and the other. Therefore, before installing the block, you need to trim.

To do this, make markings on the panel with a pencil and cut off the excess parts with a jigsaw (manual, electric) or a circular saw.

If the walls in the room are perfectly even, the plastic window sill can be installed flush with the plastered surface.

In the case when plastic or plasterboard slopes, their lower part will have to be cut in order to insert a window sill into the gap.

If the wall is uneven, you need to make small indentations (about 5 cm) on each side. After graduation installation work recesses cut in the wall will need to be puttied.

The seat should be leveled, cleared of debris. For better adhesion, the surface must be dedusted by wiping it with a damp sponge.

Installation work

The instructions for installing a plastic window do not provide for any complicated steps. The main thing is to do everything clearly, accurately, without violating the sequence of steps:

  1. The panel prepared for installation with gaps cut out on the sides is pushed under lower profile double-glazed windows to a depth of 2 cm.
  2. Pre-prepared wooden wedges are brought under the lower part at a distance of 4 cm between adjacent bars. The angle of inclination is adjusted by changing the height of the wedges (cutting, lining chips).
  3. The correct installation of the structure horizontally is checked using the building level. Measurements are made in all directions.

Wooden wedges are needed in order to tightly press the block to the structure plastic window and take on some of the load.

In addition, with their help, the window sill is installed with a slight slope away from the window to prevent water from leaking (watering indoor flowers, condensate) under the profile of the double-glazed window.

Final stage

The gaps between the wall and the lower part of the plastic block installed on the bars are successively filled with mounting foam. From the far side, the window sill is pressed against the window frame with self-tapping screws.

A load (10-15 kg) is placed on the window sill so that the panel does not rise. Since professional polyurethane foam practically does not expand, it will be enough to put 3-4 three-liter jars with water.

The work is almost completed. It remains to wait for the complete hardening of the mounting foam, which will happen in about a day. After that, you need to remove the load from the windowsill and carefully cut off the excess foam with a clerical knife.

As you can see, nothing complex process does not foresee the installation of a plastic window. The main thing is to carry out the correct preliminary measurements, trim the block and follow the recommendations during installation.

Before installing a window sill to plastic windows, you need to determine the material that you will use. Most the best choice This is an acrylic window sill. Unlike ordinary PVC coating, acrylic film is protected from cigarette burns, sand abrasions and other mechanical influences. At the end, the entire list of types of window sills is indicated, we will focus on a plastic window sill.

It is more difficult to install a window sill with your own hands, but at the same time it is cheaper, and you will gain experience. After the installers have completed the installation of windows, you can immediately begin fixing the window sills. Tools you will need to get the job done: construction foam, wooden bars, or plastic inserts, a level, or a corner, a grinder, a puncher or a hammer.

The first stage is the repulsion in the slope of the protrusions for attaching the window sill. AT pvc windows grooves are provided below, where the window sill should fit, but no one foresaw such a connector in the walls. If you have big house, then by shortening the distance of the protrusions you can save a whole window sill.

When you decide on the size of the protrusion (a few cm is enough), outline the place where you plan to make them with a pencil. Further, depending on the material, walk the grinder along the lines drawn on the slopes. If the material is not very strong, then a hammer is enough to beat off the protrusions later, if you have concrete walls, then you need a puncher with a set of chisels.

Why is it blowing after installing the window sill?

Do-it-yourself installation does not always go well - everyone has different skills and experience. Remember that before installing the window sill in the opening, you need to make sure that the installers did not leave you a surprise - holes between the window and the wall, small holes, etc. By quickly installing the window sill without checking this nuance, you will never guess why It's cold in your apartment, so be careful.

When you blow out the holes, start cleaning the grooves and the place where the window sill will be installed. Any small pebble can become a major hindrance during installation. After you remove the "large" obstacles, start cleaning the rest of the area - sweep the future parking lot of the window sill with a brush.

Before using the foam, it is important not only to clean the area, but also to moisten it - construction foam acts in places where there is moisture. We recommend that you use a primer for these purposes, just keep in mind that the thickness of the applied layer directly depends on the number of pores in the material. For example, more soil can be applied to aerated concrete than to ordinary concrete - otherwise the place for the window sill will be too wet.

You will need wooden blocks or plastic inserts, which we talked about at the beginning, to equalize the level of the window sill. It should be placed exactly at 90 degrees to the window. Determine the level of the window sill, and then insert your blanks into the voids between the wall and the object to be installed. You can determine the degree both with the help of a level, and with your own hands using a corner.

When you're done measuring, start blowing foam. It is very important that the foam is distributed around the entire perimeter. Please note that after a while it will increase in size and will need to be cut off. This will need to be done taking into account the fact that putty and plaster will need to be applied under the windowsill.

In order for the window sill not to rise due to the increasing foam, it is necessary to install a load on it. Great solution there will be installation on the windowsill of 5-liter bottles of water. Three is enough.

At the end of the installation, seal the joints with sealant.

Price of materials

It does not make sense to take expensive foam, it will do for 250 rubles. If you raise the window sill, you can do without a foam gun, but with it the process will be simplified. Its cost is about 1000 rubles. The primer, according to the idea, should be available in the room where the repairs are being made, but just in case: its cost is 100 rubles. The price of a window sill is from 50 to 1200 rubles per meter, depending on the manufacturer and the quality of the material.

Types of window sills:

  1. Monomaterial (wood, granite and other stone, PVC window sills)
  2. Composite differ in the material of the board and film.
Types of boards:
  • polyvinyl chloride;
  • chipboard or fiberboard;
  • wood-polymer composite;
Types of films by type of coating:
  • polyvinyl chloride;
  • veneer;
  • laminated paper (High Pressure Laminate, Continious Pressure Laminate, EPL-coating)
Types of films by abrasion:
  1. PVC film (paper, varnish)
  2. Elesgo film (electron beam hardened surface).

Windowsill - required element any window opening, performing both decorative and, in many cases, practical function. After all, this is one of those places where are often located flower pots or other small household items.

In the past, openings were decorated most often wooden crafts, and with the advent of plastic windows, window sills began to occupy places in the interior from the same material.

Advantages and disadvantages of PVC products

pros

To the benefits products include the following properties:

  • the material is not afraid of moisture and temperature changes;
  • It does not require special care;
  • the design is light in weight;
  • does not require periodic tinting, and is also not subject to shrinkage and warping, unlike wooden products;
  • the window sill can be installed in any length, width and shape.

Minuses

  • plastic is inferior in strength to the same wooden products;
  • when using a glossy decorative film as a coating, the window sill is easily scratched and its appearance deteriorates;
  • hot objects placed inadvertently (for example, a pot or pan removed from the fire) can significantly damage the surface.

Installation methods

Installation of a plastic window sill can be performed in one of several ways:

  1. With the help of a special solution. This method was often used in the past, but now, thanks to the emergence of new ones, it is practically not used.
  2. Using spring clips, which are screwed to the substitution profile with self-tapping screws, and the window sill itself is installed in the groove between the window and the bracket.
  3. With the help of self-tapping screws. This is the most fast way, in which the window sill is fastened with screws to the window frame.
  4. Another option is to install a window sill. without any fasteners(staples, self-tapping screws). This is the most time-consuming method, but at the same time the most reliable. The window sill is fixed with the help of wedges that are driven under it, thereby tightly pressing the edges of the slab to the frame.

Installation work

After the base is ready, you need to measure the niche and, in accordance with the obtained dimensions cut window sill from a pre-purchased blank using a jigsaw or grinder.

If necessary, the thickness of the wedges can be increased or decreased. The installation of the window sill must be carried out taking into account the fact that the plate should have a slight slope towards the room (1-2 degrees). This will allow condensation and water from watering plants to drain onto the floor, thereby liquid will not collect under the stove.

After fixing the window sill, the space between it and the base is blown out with mounting foam. For better fixation, the plate can be press down evenly with a weight.

As a load, you can put five-liter water bottles in the amount of 3-4 pieces. In this position the design is left for 2-3 days so that the foam hardens well, after which its excess is removed with a clerical knife.

It is advisable not to overload the window sill, as in this case its surface may be deformed.

How to fix the foam under the windowsill?

You can do this in one of two ways:

  1. Seal up the foam that has been cut flush tile adhesive solution. If the walls will be painted in the future, you need to putty the area plastered with glue. If it is planned to stick wallpaper, the surface is treated with an acrylic primer.
  2. In the second case, the foam should cover with vapor permeable tape, then install a decorative flashing on top (PVC, aluminum or wood).

Learn how to properly seal the foam with a solution from the video:

A few points to consider when installing a window sill.

Working with a perforator is desirable use personal protective equipment(glasses, gloves).

The window sill should not protrude beyond the slope line more than 6 cm, otherwise the air circulation may be disturbed, causing the windows to fog up.

Mounting foam stick much better if the surface with which it will be in contact, pre-moisten.

After reviewing how to replace a PVC window sill, we can conclude that this the procedure does not require professional skills and special tool.

The main thing in this matter is to be careful and do not make a mistake with the size when cutting plates. Therefore, the rule "measure seven times, cut once" is more than appropriate in this case.
