Despite already a large number of reviews on the Xiaomi smart home ecosystem, I completely undeservedly ignored one of the most affordable and very useful system sensors - the window and door opening sensor. In addition to its basic functions, which are incorporated in its name, this sensor is the most easily modified sensor of the system, and its scope is much more than it seems at first glance. But I will still devote my first review of this sensor to its main functionality, but I will also mention possible modifications.

I will start, as always, with the appearance - like all other sensors of the system - this is a white cardboard box, with printing in gray tones. The box is very similar in size to the wireless button box - flat and square.


On the back, there is some Technical information, from the interesting, besides the dimensions, this is the ZigBee operation protocol, that is, the Xiaomi Gateway gateway is required for operation, and the type of battery used is 1632. I have already stocked up on 2032 and 2450 batteries, I will have to get 1632x.


Inside the box, held by a cardboard tab, is a sensor that consists of two parts. Actually the sensor itself and the magnet.


In addition to the sensor and magnet, there is also a spare set of double-sided tape in the box. One set is already glued on the sensors.

For mounting on the surface, double-sided tape is already pasted on the back of the sensor. Just peel off the protective film.


On one of the narrow sides of the main sensor, let's call it the bottom one, there is a pairing button hole and a notch for opening the sensor.


The sensor is easy to open, you just need to pry off the notch and remove the cover. Of all the sensors that I had, this one is the easiest to parse.


Why did I call this sensor the most easily modified? This photo is the answer to that question. In fact, the sensor responds to the state of the contacts - open / closed. By default, a normally open reed switch is used for this. When the magnet approaches, the reed switch closes. For modification, it is enough to solder two wires parallel to the reed switch, and make a sensor for your own purposes.
For example - in one of the comments to my video review of a wireless button, they were interested in whether it is possible to solder wires to the contacts of the mikrik and bring them to a regular doorbell button. I advised to use the alteration of the opening sensor, which turned out to be much easier, and the commentator successfully implemented his idea - to make the doorbell part of the smart home system, and outwardly - it remained as it was in the form of the most ordinary button. There are still many options for modifications, I will talk about them as they are implemented.


The 1632 battery is located on the outside of the board - it is not difficult to replace it.


To align the sensor and the magnet, on the long side of each, there is a risk. To work, they must be placed with these sides to each other.


For pairing, we need a paper clip, it is not included in the kit, but it is required so often that I do not even hide it far away.


Experimentally, by setting the operation of the gateway backlight to the “closed” mode, I determined the maximum distance at which the reed switch contacts are closed - this is about 2 cm.


Therefore, you can place the sensor and the magnet not strictly against each other - but, for example, as in the photo - with a shift. It works great in this position.


The sensor is connected via the gateway control plugin. We choose to connect the device, select the door and window sensor from the list, then, following the on-screen prompts, hold down the synchronization button, wait for the LED to blink three times, then release the button and wait for the synchronization process to complete. In the list of devices, we have a new sensor.


A sensor, like a button, a motion sensor, and a cube, does not have its own plug-in. When you click on the sensor line in the list of devices, we get to the control window, which consists of two tabs. On the first one - a list of scenarios where it works, on the second - a log of sensor state changes. In scenarios, the sensor is available as a condition - and has three trigger options - open, closed and open for more than 1 minute.


Application options, in this review we are talking about regular functionality -
1. Turn on the lighting when entering the room. Upon opening the door, two lamps will turn on - a ceiling lamp and a light bulb. By setting the activity time of such a scenario to the evening hours, we will remove unnecessary inclusions during the day.
2. The sensor can also serve as a trigger for an alarm in the gateway settings. To do this, select it in the alarm settings window. There can be many triggers - for example, several opening and motion sensors.
3. Personally, for me, the hero of the review is located on the window, and when the window is opened, it turns off the air humidifier, and also stops the scripts that control the level of humidity. When closed, everything turns back on.

The gateway is needed to communicate the sensor with your WiFi network and vice versa, this, in turn, is necessary for the implementation remote control smart home systems via mi home and receiving notifications on a smartphone about various changes in the position of the sensor. The sensor comes in a small box with more colorful printing, unlike the boxes of other Xiaomi smart home devices and sensors. There is also a schematic sketch of the sensor itself on the front, as such there is no image on the box.

On the back of the box, as usual, the characteristics of the device are applied. From them you can get some interesting information about the sensor, its identification number, month and year of production, as well as the range of operating temperatures. They did not forget, as usual, about the indication of the ZigBee protocol, with which the device interfaces with the gateway.


In the kit, on a small spacer, there are two contact sensors operating on the principle of electromechanical switching, that is, from the presence and absence of magnetic field in a closed circuit.


Also included is a slightly informative manual. The most useful source of information is the QR code for downloading the Mi Home app. Although, I think that almost all readers of this publication have had it on their smartphone for a long time. In general, by tradition, I post photo instructions for lovers of waste paper.



Unlike the first version of the sensors, the manufacturer did not include an additional 3M adhesive tape in the kit. But this is not very embarrassing, since the adhesive surface of the sensors withstands several gluing and peeling off for a short period of time, so that its position can be corrected during installation. On the reverse side of the main contact part, which transmits information to the gateway, there is technical information that repeats some of the specifications on the box.


The main body now has a button instead of a paperclip hole. At the same time, pressing and holding the button during pairing is not very convenient due to its size and recession. Under the button is a hole to open the sensor.


On one of the sides of the main part there is an inscription of the Aqara logo and a risk to match with the contact part, which also has a risk on one of the sides. However, since the magnetic field propagates in a circle on the contact, this part of the risk is advisory and can be placed in any position relative to the main part.



Now the sensor is completely recessed into the case and the board can no longer be seen, as it was with the previous version, so opening the sensor will now mainly be accompanied by a battery replacement.


On the front of the main part of the sensor, you can see the blue operation indicator, which will light up only when it is paired with the gateway. The surfaces of the main and contact parts in front are completely flat, which advantageously allows them to be placed in any position relative to each other without combining at risk. The shape of the sensors is practically rectangular except for small rounded corners.


I installed the sensor on the outside of the door, since the protruding trim prevents the sensor from being installed in the room, this kind of sensor installation within interior doors Basically, it doesn't bother me.



Let's move on to setting up the sensor and pairing it with the gateway. Download and open the Mi Home application, go to the gateway device, within the gateway plugin, go to the Devise tab, then click on the "+" Add Subdevice.


In the window that opens, we see all the sensors that can be connected to the gateway, scroll down and click on the Aqara Door / Window sensor. After that, a pairing window will appear, where it will be indicated that in order to pair the sensor, it is necessary to hold down the button on the sensor for three seconds until the blue indicator flashes.


Then a window will appear where you need to select the room for its location and what the opening sensor is installed on (door, window, other) and click on the next step. After that, several pictures will appear, which show under what installation conditions the sensor will not work. We skip this window and get into the devices tab with the sensor that appears in it.
