Dear Russians, who are tired of messing with their grandmother's heavy inheritance - an old but still good-quality feather bed, quilt a blanket and a pillow out of it. And if the featherbed is already very large, then most likely you will get a blanket and another mattress.

A feather bed (in some regions of Russia it is called a down jacket) is a pillowcase (or bag) for the whole bed, stuffed with a small feather and a makhalka torn from the stem (I looked it up in Dahl's dictionary). The stalk and makhalka are nothing more than the awn of the feather (stalk) and soft beards (makhalki) attached to it. These fluffy beards are torn off from the awn and filled with a feather bed.

But first of all, sew a pillowcase (a cover that keeps the feather from spilling out) from a dense fabric (for example, teak) that does not let fluff through. Fold two panels of the calculated length and width inside out and stitch along both side longitudinal sides. We turn it on the face and get a “sleeve”, which we only fold inward, inside out, by 1.5 ... 2 cm on both transverse sides. and warps on the blanket.

Let's draw a central longitudinal line (Fig. 1) on the "sleeve" with a felt-tip pen or a simple pencil and stitch it. On both sides of this axial line, we outline lines parallel to it at a distance of 10 ... 15 cm and also sew them. In order to prevent distortions of the "sleeve", we start sewing the seams from the axial central line, moving towards the edge. After we sew the entire panel along, draw and sew the axial transverse line. Let's use a felt-tip pen to draw lines parallel to it, spaced from one another at a distance of 10 ... 15 cm along the entire length of the cloth (Fig. 1.6). As a result, we have two halves (right and left) with longitudinal "pockets" that will be filled with a pen. But before we start stuffing a blanket or mattress, we will clean and refresh the down-feather - we will “wash” it without a single drop of water according to the old gypsy method.

We will pick up a dry, clean wooden barrel (the most convenient!) Or any other equivalent container. Here we pour the feather from the feather bed into it and mix it with a dry stick for a long time (depending on the degree of contamination of the feathers). At the same time, a good pen “floats” to the top, and the most rough and all sorts of rubbish settles to the bottom. Choose top soft and clean feathers and fill your duvet with them!

We start, for example, from the right half to fill with a pen “pockets” adjacent to the axial transverse line (Fig. 2, a), and we put more pen in the middle ones than in the extreme ones. We fill in the “pockets” of the intended transverse line (the first from the central transverse, Fig. 2.6), and then we lay a line along it. In this sequence, we fill the “pockets” with a pen, sewing transverse lines one after another, until we fill the entire half of the blanket, gradually approaching the hem. We sew the edge of the hem with a double line (at a distance of 0.1 cm and 0.75 cm from the edge) - for reliability, so that the feathers do not spill out. So, the right half of the blanket is filled.

Similarly, we fill with a pen and sew the left half of the blanket along the transverse lines - no special science is required here. Sew a cover made of bright fabric onto the finished apron, which you grab with a few stitches to the apron in the middle and at the corners so that it does not stray. Here's a blanket for you - have a nice sleep!

Down products have long been famous for their good qualities. Down duvets and pillows are still popular today, but their cost is not affordable for everyone, and not everyone can afford to purchase such products. The high price of down blankets is only because the manufacturing process requires a lot of resources and energy. Many needlewomen are wondering: how to sew a duvet with your own hands? Previously, our grandmothers were engaged in the processing of raw materials and sewing by hand, now everything is much simpler. In this article, we will tell you in detail how to cope with such a task.

Benefits of duvets

Products made of fluff are practical, comfortable and light in weight, but these are far from the main advantages. There are much significant advantages for blankets made from this raw material:

  • They have moisture-repellent properties.
  • When washing and long-term use, the fluff does not gather into lumps.
  • Retain their original properties for a long time.

Due to the fact that the prices are very high, it is recommended to sew a duvet at home. With a great desire and the presence of all necessary materials, tools, it will be possible to make a blanket in just a few hours. In addition, you will get an original product that you will not find anywhere else.

We sew a duvet at home

In order to make a duvet with your own hands, you need to be patient and be prepared for a difficult handmade. Tailoring includes several stages, and if you perform them in turn, then in the end you will get what you want.

Initially make sure you have the following tools and supplies:

  • Sewing machine with threads.
  • Gauze bag and lining fabric.
  • Filler for the future blanket.

If you have everything, proceed to the implementation of the stages of manufacturing the product.

Training

Since you will need fluff for sewing, you should first calculate right amount. Approximately you will need:

  • Double duvet - about one and a half kilograms of fluff.
  • One and a half blanket - about a kilogram of filler (+/-200 grams).
  • Baby blanket - about 600 grams of fluff.

At this stage:

  1. Raw materials must be carefully sorted out, garbage removed.
  2. Then place it in a bag of gauze and wash it several times in soapy water.
  3. Dry well in vivo, stirring constantly during drying.

Important! You can also treat the fluff with antibacterial compounds. Make sure that the raw materials do not gather in lumps and do not remain wet.

We sew teak

In order to sew the outer layer of teak, it is better to choose fabrics that look rich - satin or satin. The inner layer should be made of a denser material - the usual one will do cotton fabric. This is necessary so that the fluff does not crawl out. The base and the outer part must be free and correspond to the specified dimensions. As a result, you will get two bags, which will later be filled with fluff.

Important! The finished blanket will be buttoned on all sides. This fact must be taken into account, and the size of the matter must be increased by 4-5 centimeters.

Making markups:

  1. After you sew the breastplate, place the finished bags one inside the other. The satin or satin bag should be on top, as this is the front side of the quilt.
  2. Then you need to draw transverse and longitudinal lines in such a way that you get the same squares over the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe future product.

Stitching the lines

To bring the base of the future blanket to completion, you need to make seams along the marked lines. You need to sew carefully, slowly, so as not to spoil the basis of the future product.

Filling the blanket:

  1. After the fluff has been processed and dried, it should be thoroughly kneaded with your hands and patted a little to make it even softer and more airy.
  2. Distribute the raw materials into equal parts in accordance with the number of stitched pockets.
  3. Each part of the bird's down is evenly distributed in the pockets - this is the main rule.

Important! In order to prevent the filler from peeking out, you can flash the pockets with a temporary seam, which will be easy to remove later.

The final stage of creating a homemade duvet

  1. When all the pockets are evenly filled with fluff, you can start stitching the longitudinal seams.
  2. Then using sewing machine making final seams.

We put on a duvet cover and enjoy a soft and warm blanket.

Despite the high quality of down products, it is recommended to follow a few rules to maintain an aesthetic appearance and maintaining the original qualities:

  • Wash the product by hand using special gel formulations.
  • Can the blanket be washed in washing machine, while setting the “gentle wash” program.
  • Washing is carried out at a temperature not exceeding 40 degrees.
  • It is better to dry the product in the wind or with a fan, as the air will penetrate inside and push the raw materials.
  • After drying, the blanket should be slightly patted with your hands so that there are no downy lumps.

17 geese walk around the yard, and peasant upbringing and a large family do not allow throwing out such good as goose down. Here's what I found on the internet...
“This is how my grandmother sewed a quilted duvet.
First I sewed a quilt cover. I outlined (drawn) the longitudinal and transverse lines of the stitches, we got 15x15 squares (depending on the size of your fist, you will understand why). I sewed the longitudinal lines of the stitches. In these long pockets, I alternately put a down-feather in the lowest row of marked squares with a handful of stitches. (Your stuffed fist must fit into your pocket, so at least 15cm wide.) Having filled the first row of squares, she chopped off with pins along the intended transverse line and sewed on a typewriter. Then, with the same hand, she filled each square of the second row with stitches, cleaved and sewed.
In my opinion, this method is also suitable for filling the blanket with holofiber balls. "

"Duvet at home can be sewn easily and quickly.

For this purpose, the down of ducks and geese is most suitable. For a double blanket measuring 172 x 212 centimeters, about 1.4 kilograms of down is needed, for children (110 x 140 centimeters) - 0.4, one and a half (140 x 212 centimeters) - 1.1 kilograms.
First, the down is washed in warm soapy water. For 10 liters of it, 400 grams of planed soap and 2 teaspoons of borax are taken. Washing powders "News" and "Lotus" also give good results.

The fluff is placed in a gauze bag, dipped in water for 30 - 40 minutes and slightly wrinkled. After that, the fluff is squeezed out and again stirred for half an hour in a new solution, where soap and borax are half as much.

The pressed down is rinsed in warm water and dried in the sun. The moisture content of the finished raw material should not exceed 10 percent.

After the “stuffing” is ready, 2 pillowcases are sewn: the inner one is made of teak, the outer one is made of satin or satin. They should have holes where fluff can be pushed in.

Pillowcases are placed one inside the other, on the outside - a pattern is applied. At the same time, you should not be too philosophic: a square or a rhombus will be a sufficient decoration for your blanket.

The fluff is poured into the inner pillowcase, the hole is sewn up. The blanket is pulled over a frame made of planks with a section of 3x3 centimeters. The size of the frame must match the dimensions of the blanket.

After the blanket is stretched and the fluff is evenly distributed over the entire area, the stitch begins "

"From down feathers unsuitable for these purposes, you can sew a duvet. In this case, the feathers must be carefully sorted out, washed and dried. The feathers are washed in a solution of the Novost or Lotus washing powder. Soak the down with a warm solution of the powder for 30-40 minutes, then hands are stretched for 3-4 minutes, squeezed and placed in clean water.Depending on the degree of contamination, the water is changed 2-3 times (To clean). In order not to lose the feathers during washing, the water from the container is poured through gauze. During drying, the feathers are periodically mixed and straighten the fallen lumps. The dried feathers are sorted out again, the fan is separated from the rods. The fan must be plucked from the tip of the feather. The fluff prepared in this way can be mixed with the fluff of waterfowl (ducks, geese).
Two pillowcases are needed for a blanket: the inner one is made of feather fabric (teak), the outer one is made of satin, satin or other fabric. They are sewn up from four sides, leaving a hole for pouring fluff. Then put the pillowcases one inside the other, straighten the fabric well and apply a pattern for the blanket stitch on the front side of the upper pillowcase. Do not make too complex a drawing. It is best to quilt the blanket with diamonds or squares. After drawing the pattern, pour the fluff into the inner pillowcase and sew up the hole well. Then pull the blanket over a special wooden frame(hoop), evenly distribute the fluff over the entire canvas and quilt. "

"preparing the fabric: cut out right size pieces, taking into account allowances, we sew only on one side. the top one should be lined with the required number of squares.
We divide the finished fluff by the lined number of squares - in order to evenly distribute it.
now lay the fabric on the floor, sewn side towards you - the upper part lies on your lap. let's say you got 6 squares in a row, so you put fluff in these squares as close to the edge as possible. then close top and bait - manually with medium stitches along the edge of the lined square. do not forget about the edges - they also need to be sewn.
do the next row in the same way.
it turns out that you put fluff on the bottom piece, and the top one rolls onto the bottom piece as you go.
when all the fluff is laid out, and the lines of the squares are stitched by hand, then we sit down at the machine and sew the edges first, and then the horizontal and vertical lines.
We sew the edges like this: we bend to the wrong side and sew along the edge.
somehow clumsily explained, but it didn’t work out better.

About the lack of a machine: you can manually sew it all, because the duvet cover will still be there. "

Such chic soft beds - they seem to be from the past. From that time of the time - when they still slept on featherbeds stuffed with the softest fluff, and not on foam mattresses. However, no one bothers you to sew a feather bed for yourself and create such a soft bed with many pillows and pillows.

A featherbed can be sewn from a certain number down pillows. First you need to sew a pillowcase to the size of the bed. To do this, you need a dense fabric called teak. A rectangular breastplate is sewn from it, which should be stitched once along and several times across.

As a result, it will consist of transverse stripes, which are stuffed with fluff on both sides and then sewn up. Just remember that it is best to work with fluff in the bath - where cleaning will be easiest to do.

Video - how to make a duvet

original bed

This is such a great solution for the bedroom. Probably, it is convenient to use it in earthquake-prone areas ... But seriously, such a bed looks chic, aesthetically pleasing and ethnic in my opinion! And between the cables you can tie a canopy, and - at any height! And for the price, such a bed will not cost much - wood panel, mattress and ropes from ordinary rope. The main thing is that the floor slabs are strong))) In general, it is probably better to hang such a bed in a private house - at least the floor of the neighbors from above will not be in danger.
