Classic pendant chandeliers continue to be very popular even in modern interiors. However, a situation arises when the chandelier you like does not fit into the room due to the insufficient height of the ceilings.

Indeed, you can hardly increase the ceilings. But to shorten the chandelier completely. This publication will describe the process of preparing a chandelier for installation in a room with low ceilings.

The bottom line is that regardless of the technology used to make the "leg" of the chandelier, it can still be shortened. Of course, it may be necessary to re-thread the threads so that the top taper hides all the wires.

But this is not as difficult to do as it seems at the beginning. The fact is that the overwhelming majority of classically chandeliers are made in one of two ways:

  • chain;
  • tube.

There are models in which the metal tubes are additionally covered with plastic or glass tubes. Unfortunately, in this case, it is not possible to carefully cut the chandelier.

The easiest option is to shorten the chain. You just need to remove a few links, cut the wire supplying the light bulbs, and that's it! The chandelier can be installed in its rightful place.

It is extremely important to make sure that after cutting the chandelier, the wire that is located inside it is not damaged. Otherwise, the risk of electric shock increases significantly.

Problems can also arise regarding this part of the chandelier adjustment. Chandeliers often use brass tubes. Moreover, their thickness is very small (much less than a millimeter).

As a result, threading yourself is quite problematic. In this case, they resort to trick. The cone, which is adjacent to the ceiling, is fixed to the “leg” with an ordinary pin, which is also made of brass.

The hairpin is inserted into the hole made. Of course, the designated fastening element must be fixed on the opposite side. With the right approach, such a rework can be done carefully.

Following these tips, most models of classic chandeliers can be converted for use in rooms with low ceilings. This is especially true for apartments of the Soviet era, which the owner wants to update with a new design.

Installation instructions for connecting a pendant light!

We have already examined how to connect and install all the most common types of lamps: chandeliers, overhead, recessed, sconces, street lighting and landscape lighting. Now it remains to consider a slightly less rare installation option with connecting a pendant type of lamps that are attached to the ceiling using various types of suspensions.

To suspend the luminaire body, cables, pipes are used, or the most common option since Soviet times is the suspension of the luminaire on a reinforced electric cable.

The main advantages of this type of luminaires are ease of installation with the choice of any required installation height and subsequent maintenance.

Remember that you should not install below 2 meters, so as not to accidentally touch your head.

Scope of application Pendant lamps are simply irreplaceable in rooms with high ceilings. With the help of a suspension, they are installed at the required height, providing the required amount of light, and in addition, the process of subsequent cleaning and replacement of lamps in them is simplified. Pendant lamps are irreplaceable in production, in shopping centers, etc. Not infrequently they help to effectively solve the problem of bright lighting in individual houses and apartments. For example, a billiard table or a kitchen ...

Basic suspension structures.

The luminaire is suspended from the ceiling using an electric cable supplying it, the insulation of which is specially reinforced in order to withstand the weight of the luminaire for a long time without damage and stretching (Figure 1).

The luminaire can also hang on a metal chain, and the cable will intertwine with it or hang side by side without weight load (Figure 2).

There are designs from 2 to 10 luminaires that are suspended by cables to the ceiling (Figure 3), and there are models with the simultaneous suspension of several identical luminaires (Figure 4). Figure 5 shows a luminaire with one shade, which hangs on three cables. There are still quite a few variations, but almost all of them are installed in the same way.

Pendant luminaire device. The luminaire consists of a base with a mounting plate, which is mounted directly to the ceiling. The second main detail is a lampshade with a shade. And the third part is the suspension (cable, chain, cable itself, etc.) The design of the lamp provides a terminal block for connecting it to the power supply and, of course, a lamp.

Installation and connection of the lamp.

1. Turn off the switch and check the absence of a phase with an indicator screwdriver on the electrical cable to which we will connect. If the phase is not lost, then the junction box is not correctly wired (see the correct wiring diagram) and it is necessary to turn off the corresponding machine!

2. We disassemble the lamp. We remove the plafond, and securely fasten the mounting plate to the ceiling together with the outlet of the electrical cable or wires.

How to mount to the ceiling, see this article.

3. Adjust the height to the required value, for this we unscrew the bolts on the retainer and shorten the cable and cable to the required length. As a rule, the luminaire comes from the factory with the maximum length of the suspension.

After finishing the adjustment, cut off the excess cable and cable, if it is not possible to hide too much remaining stock in the base of the lamp.

4. We connect the lamp.

Phase and zero are connected to the terminal block, and if you have a three-wire network, then the third wire is attached either directly or through the terminal block to the metal case.

5. Fasten the lamp base with a cable coming out of it and an electric cable with a socket to the mounting plate.

6. We hang the plafond.

The most common option is when the cover is fixed on the cartridge by twisting a special plastic threaded ring onto it.

That's all that remains to install the lamp and check the performance of our lamp.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated, there is no way to do it yourself!

Frequently asked questions

Question: Is it possible to connect a sconce designed for connection through internal wiring, if such wiring is not provided in the room? Answer: Yes. To do this, you need to connect a cord with a switch and a plug to the sconce.

Question: With what arrangement of shades (up or down) to choose a chandelier if the ceiling height is 2.60m? Answer: With shades down or to the sides, since with such an arrangement of shades, the light output will be greater.

Question: What if the chandelier is with a long chain and the ceiling is low? Answer: In almost any pendant chandelier, you can remove the chain links and choose the optimal length.

Q: Is it practical to buy a transformer chandelier? Answer: Yes. Since the transformer absorbs voltage surges, this increases the life of the halogen lamp.

Question: What color should the shades of the chandelier be in order to have the maximum light output? Answer: White, as the light output of the lamp is 92%. This is the maximum light output.

Question: Is it possible to connect a lighting device so that the plafonds do not turn on all at once, but for example, through one plafond? Let's say that the lighting fixture has 3 wires (blue, brown, yellow-green). Answer: Yes. To do this, you need to connect wires of any color (blue or brown) to the yellow-green wire, after removing the grounding (detach the yellow-green wire from the fittings).

Question: What kind of lighting devices are used for directional lighting? Answer: Spotlights. They have a swivel joint that allows you to change the direction of the light flux. They use incandescent and halogen lamps.

Question: Which lamps heat up the lighting fixture less and are replaced less often? Answer: Energy-saving fluorescent lamps, such as CFL

Question: Which incandescent lamp does not have a spiral visible and the luminous efficiency is greater than that of a conventional incandescent lamp? Answer: A krypton incandescent lamp. Due to filling with inert gas krypton, the life of these lamps is longer and the luminous efficiency is 10-15% higher compared to conventional incandescent lamps.

Question: How many bulbs are needed for a room? Answer: Depending on the size of the room, it is necessary to calculate the number of lamps.

Question: Can the crystal and fixtures of the lamps be washed? Answer: Chandeliers with crystal trimmings do not require any special maintenance. There is no need to remove individual pendants from the chandelier. A thin layer of dust can be easily removed with a dry anti-static cloth. It is necessary to work with white gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints. If the crystal is very dusty or dirty, all you need is some lukewarm water and a little dishwashing liquid. New microfiber wipes are ideal for such work; You can also use a thin, lint-free cotton cloth that is highly absorbent. Use a cloth soaked in soapy water to gently wipe each harness from top to bottom, then dry with a clean cloth. After cleaning, the crystal will shine again in full force. We have on sale a specially designed cleaner for chandeliers and crystal products in a convenient package to facilitate the maintenance of high-placed chandeliers, while eliminating the need to dismantle, wash and wipe the chandeliers. Removes household dirt, tobacco bloom. This tool is indispensable for cleaning the complex, multifaceted surface of vases, cups, while the processed objects acquire pristine purity.

Question: Is it possible to remodel a chandelier with one connection for two or more? Answer: Yes. You can do it yourself. To do this, it is necessary to remount the wiring diagram of the chandelier, in compliance with the rules of electrical and fire safety. We recommend that you entrust the installation of the luminaire to a qualified electrician.

Question: Is it possible to use 60 W bulbs in luminaires? Answer: First of all, you need to remember that the maximum power of a light bulb that can be used in a luminaire is marked on the lamp holder or shade. We recommend using 40-watt bulbs in luminaires with closed-type shades and 60-watt bulbs in open ones, thereby eliminating the possibility of overheating of the shade and socket, because an open luminaire is better cooled by air. To increase the power of the luminaire, energy-saving lamps are used.

Question: What you need to know and what safety measures must be observed when connecting the lamp? Answer: First of all, you need to remember that sound mind, caution and careful operation of electrical appliances are factors that depend only on the user himself

When choosing a ceiling light, pay attention to the suspension. How long should it be? Should you buy a model with a decorative hanger?

Do you need an adjustable model? Pendant light device A light on a wire.

This is a prototype of a single-lamp pendant luminaire, consisting of a socket and a cable attached to it. Modern models are much more complex. In addition to the holder and the suspension wire, the design includes a luminaire body, diffuser and / or reflector.

However, today the suspension of a luminaire is not necessarily a wire.

Types of suspensions Suspension is an ordinary electrical wire. Usually it is painted in one color or another, and sometimes it is equipped with a beautiful braid.

Such a suspension is found mainly in single-lamp models - the cable is able to withstand only a small weight of the device. In general, this is still the same lamp on a suspension, but with a light shade - made of plastic or, say, rice paper.

In most cases, the manufacturer provides for the length of such a suspension with a small margin, so the chandelier can be mounted at different heights. However, if later you want to hang it a little higher or lower, you will have to start all over again and change the cord.

Decorative suspension is the most common. The luminaire has both an electrical wire and an element that holds the luminaire. Beautiful forged chains, multi-colored cords with decorations and much more can act as such a suspension.

In this case, the wire hangs freely or wraps around the decorative part. And to hang the lamp higher, simply remove a few chain links. Both single-lamp and multi-lamp models - chandeliers - are equipped with decorative suspensions.

Decorative pendants are not only beautiful, but also durable - they can support significant weight.Invisible pendant is the complete opposite of decorative.

It is based on a transparent fishing line or thin metal string. It seems as if the chandelier is floating in the air. What is holding her back?

Obviously, this is not a power cord - after all, it wriggles, that is, it is not at all stretched under the weight of the lamp! All the "fault" is inconspicuous invisible suspensions: with the help of such devices, the lamps are attached to the ceiling - they are the ones that hold the weight.

A fixed hanger is a rod within which a wire runs.

It is made from any material, from aluminum and plastic to glass and wood. The rod fits directly to the ceiling, so the suspension height of the luminaires remains unchanged.

Before buying such a model, carefully calculate what length is right for you, so as not to touch the chandelier with your head in the future. To shorten the fixed suspension, you will have to pick up a hacksaw for metal.

But it is unlikely that you will be able to accurately carry out the procedure - it is better to choose another lamp. All the suspensions described above can be called stationary.

But there are also varieties that allow you to constantly change the direction of the luminous flux or the height of the lamp installation - at your request.

In this case, the design allows you to vary the installation height of the luminaire. It can be a system of counterweights or knees (a similar solution is used in table lamps). - Flexible suspension.

Each of the chandelier arms, placed on flexible fittings, can be directed in any direction, highlighting a decorative element or scattering light on the ceiling surface. Flexible suspensions are very convenient if from time to time there is a need to direct the light in one direction or another.

How to get a chandelier hook from the ceiling

Not all chandeliers or ceiling lamps are suspended from the ceiling on a hook, often the hook only interferes with the installation, we will now talk about how to get it out of the ceiling.

Most often, chandelier hooks in the ceiling look like this:

As you can see, there are 3 main options for hooks presented here, one of which, most likely, will be with you. For convenience, we will consider them separately, the more they are attached in different ways.

OPTION 1

This type of chandelier hook is found in most new buildings. At the same time, the attachment to the base may be different, but outwardly they look the same.

The technology for dismantling such a hook, no matter how it is attached to the ceiling, is the same at the first stages. It is done as follows:

1. The protective cover is removed from the hook

2. Go down the hook and remove the protective strip that covers the place where the hook is attached to the ceiling and the cable outlet.

3. Now that we have access to the place for attaching the hook to the ceiling, it remains for us, depending on the type of installation, to remove it.

3.1. If at the base of the ceiling there is no niche where the cable is often hidden, but it is solid, as in our case, such a hook is simply attached to a self-tapping screw or to a dowel-nail.

3.2. If there is some kind of cavity behind the protective cover, most often in monolithic houses there is a socket, a hook, because it is double-sided, just suspended by the second end on the crossbar. You just need to remove it.

OPTION 2

Option two hooks may differ in color, material of manufacture, thickness or other characteristics, but they can be removed in the same way.

They just need to be unscrewed. Grasp the ring and rotate counterclockwise. If the hook is tight and you cannot turn it with your hands, use pliers, pliers, a Swedish wrench, or any other suitable hand tool.

Depending on the type of base, whether it is a concrete ceiling or suspended, made of drywall, the hook will be fixed in different ways, but, in any case, you can unscrew any of these types of hooks.

OPTION 3

This option is the least common, but the dismantling of such a hook is the simplest and most straightforward. Usually the hook is part of a mounting plate that is simply screwed to the ceiling. In this case, simply unscrew the fastening screws and remove the hook base.

If you come across a different type of chandelier hook and you cannot remove it yourself, as well as if there are additions to the article or corrections, be sure to write in the comments to the article!

How to hang a chandelier on the ceiling (on a hook, with a bar) + photo

Installing a new chandelier in the room is a landmark event. Before you hang a chandelier on the ceiling in an apartment, you need to assemble it correctly. Fortunately, the design of most chandeliers is not that complicated, so let's get down to the next part of the preparatory work.

Wire connection

Let's start with the most basic. First, answer the questions:

  • How many wires are coming out of the ceiling?
  • How many keys are the switch installed on?

If there are only 2 wires, then forget about the possibility of turning on different parts of the chandelier with a two-button switch. Without installing the third wire, nothing will work. This means that all the wires in the chandelier are collected in bundles of a certain color. If 3 wires are connected to the lamp, and you need the light to turn on not at the same time, then in the chandelier, the wires going to the thread of the cartridge and the ground wire are collected in one bundle, while the others are divided into 2 groups, and also twisted into bundles.

Bad contact will not only lead to heating of the wire, but can also cause premature failure of the housekeeper.

To work, you need a simple tool:

  1. Pliers.
  2. A small screwdriver.
  3. Battery-powered indicator screwdriver.
  4. Terminal block.
  5. Open-end wrench 12.

The need for a key arises when assembling a chandelier. An indicator screwdriver is required to determine where the wire is connected. Take it in your hands, and the moment you touch the tip of the screwdriver and its upper part, it should light up - this means that the device is working. Now, while grasping the top edge of the screwdriver, touch the stinger to the thread (or side contact) in the chuck. With your free hand, touch the wires coming out of this socket. When you touch one of them, the indicator should light up. Wires of the same color will be ground.

Insert the separated wire bundles into the terminal block of your choice and fasten securely in it.

We hang the chandelier

Let's look at two main ways.

  1. On the hook.
  2. On the mounting plate.

Hook

Previously, this was the most common method, but now it is a thing of the past. Nevertheless, many variants of chandeliers are still produced with just such a mount.

Some craftsmen solved this problem in their own way - they replaced the plastic hook with a homemade one made from an electrode for welding.

The chandelier comes with a special fixing strip, which must be properly prepared before installing it on the ceiling. Fasten the screws on it with nuts so that their caps are in the inner part of the bar, just do not clamp them. Insert the bar from the inside of the bowl into the chandelier as it will be installed later, screwing the decorative nuts all the way - the bar should be flush with the edges of the chandelier bowl, or slightly below it.

After checking, securely tighten the screws in the bar so that they do not twist, otherwise removing the chandelier can be a big problem. Place the plank on the ceiling where it will be installed and mark through the holes on the ceiling. With the plank aside, drill the concrete base of the ceiling and insert the dowels. After that, the plank is attached to the ceiling, and the chandelier itself is attached to it. If the base of the ceiling is wooden, then the plank is attached to it with wood screws.

Electrical connection

When the contacts of the switch are open, there should be no voltage on the wires.

This means that when you touch the wires with an indicator screwdriver, it should not glow. In this case, a battery-free screwdriver will give a more accurate result. After turning on the power, the indicator should show the presence of voltage on the two wires. The remaining one is the "earth", which should be connected to the common beam of the chandelier. If this is not the case in your case, then this means that the switch disconnects not the phase, but the ground. If you have incandescent lamps or LED lamps connected, then you can leave it that way, for housekeepers such a connection is not suitable, since they can blink (as described above).

In no case do not install housekeepers if the chandelier is connected via a dimmer!

Connecting a chandelier with a power supply

Often people try to increase the brightness of the glow by replacing the standard lamps with more powerful ones, as a result of which the chandelier ceases to function.

To prevent the transformer from breaking down, monitor the total consumption of the lamps - it must be lower than the output power of this device.

If your chandelier has halogen bulbs, then most often they are designed for a 12 V supply. In this case, the power is connected through a step-down transformer, on which the voltage at the outputs is always written. Where the voltage is 220V, we connect it to the network, and the contacts with the designation 12V are to the bulbs.

When connected directly, the bulbs must be 220V. Otherwise, halogen lamps designed to operate through a transformer will explode and glass shards scatter throughout the room.

All wires must be carefully insulated.

Fastening to a concrete ceiling

In order to fix the mounting strip on the concrete ceiling, you need to attach it to the intended mounting location, and make marks on the ceiling where the holes will be drilled. If the ceiling is made of hollow slabs, then you need to check the thickness of the concrete in the place where the hole will be drilled, as it may happen that the dowel has nothing to hold on to. You may have to step aside, or position the plank differently. In the event that nothing can be changed, then you can use anchors, or, lead a wooden lath into the cavity of the slab, and screw the bar to it with screws. To complete this work, you will need:

  1. Hammer drill (or hammer drill).
  2. Victory drill, according to the diameter of the dowel.
  3. Screwdriver (screwdriver / drill).
  4. Dowels (anchors, or screws).

Before you start drilling, make sure that dust and sand do not get into the hammer chuck. For this purpose, you can pull a disposable cup, or half a rubber ball, onto the drill, and then drill.

Depending on the method of fastening you choose, secure the bar securely, but do not overdo it, as it can be bent if you press very hard.

On plasterboard ceiling

What difficulties can arise when installing a chandelier on a plasterboard ceiling? The fact is that both the appearance of the plasterboard ceiling and the mechanical strength of the installed structures are important.

It is necessary to decide in advance on the choice of a chandelier, and determine how it will be fixed. Let's consider the main recommendations:

  1. The place on the ceiling, where the heavy chandelier will be located, must be additionally reinforced with a metal profile. This must be taken care of even during the manufacture of the frame of the ceiling structure.
  2. To fix a small chandelier directly to the drywall, you need to buy fasteners (folding spring dowels, butterflies). You don't need to reinforce anything.

During work, it is important to observe safety precautions - to ensure safe movement under the ceiling and to de-energize the electrical system.

If you cannot turn off the power to the room, then you need to work in the rubber gloves of an electrician and use a solid tool (nippers and pliers should be with intact handles).

We fix the chandelier to the plasterboard ceiling

Drywall has strong mechanical properties, and for this reason, installation is carried out directly to the material itself. But this method has limitations.

  1. Since a drywall sheet can withstand a load weighing up to 6 kg per square meter, then, given this feature, when buying, you should give preference to chandeliers that have a relatively low weight.
  2. It should be borne in mind that deformation of the plasterboard ceiling may occur during the operation of the device, for example, replacing the lamp or if you accidentally hook the chandelier with your hand. Therefore, in order to preserve the attractive appearance of the plasterboard ceiling for a long time, it is not recommended to repeatedly change the chandelier, all the more it is not recommended to make new ones next to the old holes.

First, consider the option of attaching a pendant chandelier. First of all, you need to drill a hole in the drywall (for the selected fasteners) and insert a spring dowel or a butterfly - in this place the chandelier will be suspended from the ceiling.

The spring dowel must be tightened with a nut, and the butterfly must be tightened with a self-tapping screw (there should be a click). The dowel and butterfly must be completed with a hairpin or hook. After that, you can hang the chandelier on the hook and connect the wiring.

Holes are made at the designated points, as in the case of a pendant chandelier, but there was a hook, and here we will use a butterfly dowel, to which the bar will be drawn with self-tapping screws. Now the most interesting thing - holding the chandelier under the ceiling, you need to connect the wiring, and only after that you can fix the chandelier.

This work alone is extremely inconvenient, so you need someone to hold the chandelier until you finish the electrical wiring. If there is nowhere to wait for help, then make a small hook and temporarily hang the chandelier on it so as not to scratch it.

When installing a stretch ceiling, you should take care in advance of what kind of chandelier or lamp will be on the ceiling, and what kind of fixture you need to use for the lighting fixture. This is important to take into account, because the stretched material is not the basis for fastening, and if the integrity of the film is broken, the canvas will simply break.

How to choose the right chandelier

It is important to pay attention to the choice of a chandelier so that it does not spoil the expensive ceiling covering. In this case, it is necessary to take into account which lamps will be used. For example, it is better to purchase a chandelier with energy-saving lamps, since they heat up less during operation. If halogen or incandescent lamps are used, then they should be hidden in the shade and not directed at the ceiling, but to the side.

If you have purchased a chandelier with sockets for ordinary incandescent lamps, it is better to screw in housekeepers or LED bulbs instead. It is important to know that if the chandeliers are overhead with a thin metal base, then adjoining the stretch ceiling in a heated state from incandescent lamps can lead to its deformation.

You also need to make sure that the base of the fixture that covers the fasteners is free from sharp edges and will not tear the film.

Fasten to a stretch ceiling

The most common and reliable mounting method is with a hook. But this method is only suitable for hanging chandeliers.

  • if the base for the stretch ceiling is reinforced concrete slabs, and the hook has already been installed by the builders, then it is necessary to determine whether it is installed at a sufficient height;
  • if the location of the hook may not suit you, then using a dowel or anchor you can install the hook yourself by cutting off the old fasteners with a grinder;
  • another way - in the place where there will be a hole for installation in the stretch ceiling, a wooden mortgage is installed, and a hook is attached directly to it.

You need to know at what distance the stretch ceiling will be from the main ceiling, and also bring the ends of the electrical wire to the installation site.

After the stretch ceiling is stretched, where the hook is located, you need to glue the thermal ring, inside which a hole is cut out for the wires to exit, and then the chandelier is fastened. This happens in this way: the chandelier must be hung on a hook, the wires must be connected, and the attachment point must be covered with a cap of the lighting fixture.

The chandelier can be mounted on a strip or mounting plate.

Most lighting fixtures come with special fasteners - a metal profile with screws (the fastening strip mentioned earlier). It is attached to the main ceiling, and the chandelier is attached to the screws on top of the stretch ceiling using decorative nuts.

Another fixing of the chandelier to the stretch ceiling provides for the installation of a wooden bar to the main ceiling, the length of which should not reach the stretch ceiling by almost 1–2 cm. Otherwise, the bar will protrude and, over time, may tear the stretch ceiling film. Further, the bar should be attached to the ceiling using self-tapping screws with dowels. And when using a wooden block, you also need to make a hole, reinforcing it with a thermal ring.

The mounting plate is attached to the bar without going beyond the hole. Then the base of the lighting fixture is attached to the plate. Further, the holes of the base must be connected with pins (or screws) and fastened with nuts.

In some cases, instead of a wooden block, thick moisture-resistant plywood with attached metal legs is used as a base.

Fastening the chandelier to the cruciform bar

Fixing for chandeliers This type of fixing is intended mainly for heavy chandeliers with a wide base. Due to the fact that the mounting holes are removed from each other, it will be impossible to fix the chandelier within the hole. For this, a wooden block in the size of a cross is again attached to the main ceiling as a base. In the canvas of the stretch ceiling, it is necessary to carefully cut out five holes and reinforce them with thermal rings: one large hole to bring out the electrical wires and connect the power, and the other four are smaller. Instead of small-diameter thermal rings, where self-tapping screws are screwed in, you can use pieces of plastic that are glued to the stretch ceiling. This procedure must be done, otherwise the film will tear where the hole is made.

When the wires are connected, you can hang the chandelier on the cross and fix it with nuts.

Answers to the most common questions about chandeliers and pendant lights.

Chandeliers and pendant lights are consistently popular and are able to illuminate dark corners, bringing chic and sparkle to a room. The article provides tips to help the reader choose, hang and properly care for chandeliers and pendant lights.

Which chandelier should you choose?

The chandelier you choose should match the interior and style of the room in which you want to hang it. For a normal room, try simple pendant lights or chandeliers without a lot of tiers, crystals, or bulbs. Wood chandeliers are unique, so they are suitable for any interior, from rustic style to modern style. Brass and crystal chandeliers are great for more formal spaces as they are designed to sparkle and impress. Iron chandeliers are also suitable for more formal interiors due to their antique look.

What size should the chandelier be?

Never choose large chandeliers for small spaces and rooms with low ceilings, they overload the room and look out of place. Small chandeliers in a large room or room with high ceilings can look smaller than they actually are, making the room look dark. Measure the dimensions of the room by adding them. A chandelier for such a room should have a diameter close to the same number in centimeters.

How high should the chandelier be hung?

This is a tricky question. If hung too low, you can bump your head against it at the dining table, and the chandelier can also create reflections in the living room. Hanging too high will make the chandelier look dull and out of place. The chandelier should hang 75 to 85 cm above the dining table. A vintage-style or very fancy chandelier can be raised 7cm to improve visibility. In a simple living room, you can hang a chandelier just below so that it becomes the center of attention.

Where can you place the chandelier?

Chandeliers should almost never be located in the center of the room, which creates shadows in the corners, prompting you to put all the furniture in the middle of the room. Position the chandeliers over spaces with specific functions to highlight them. For example, hang a small and cozy chandelier over your sofa. Several small chandeliers located around the room will create a warm atmosphere. In a dining room, the chandelier is best positioned above the center of the table. You can try placing two or three small chandeliers along the length of the table.

How to clean a chandelier?

Most chandeliers require only light cleaning with a soft cloth or microfiber. To increase the copper sheen of a brass chandelier, use a cloth lightly dampened with furniture polish. Cleaning your light bulbs and lampshades is important as they diffuse light. Buff the light bulbs with a soft cloth before dusting the chandelier itself, then wash the lampshades in warm soapy water. Crystal chandeliers need special cleaning and care. Clean crystal chandeliers and lampshades in warm water mixed with isopropyl alcohol. Cover it with a cover, leaving the chandelier to dry.

Does a chandelier need special lamps?

Most chandeliers come with special bulbs, so you need to find bulbs with the correct intensity. These are usually 20, 40, 60, 100-watt bulbs. You can choose between transparent bulbs for maximum light output, or frosted glass bulbs for additional diffusion.

What are pendant lights, how to use them?

Pendant lights are similar to chandeliers but are often smaller, longer, and less formal. They come in a variety of vibrant colors and designs. Pendant lights are great for highlighting and dividing space and work lighting. Try placing them together above your kitchen island to separate the kitchen area from the dining area. Use one light to highlight the butcher's block. You can use two, three for the length of the dining table.

Everyone can skillfully and correctly hang a chandelier on their own, without being an electrician and without calling specialists. Of course, installing a chandelier under the ceiling is quite a serious undertaking, but at the same time it does not require a high level of special training.

There are several different ways of attaching a decorative lighting fixture - chandeliers - to the ceiling. Determines tactics, first of all, the total weight of the product. It is logical that a heavier chandelier requires a solid, thoughtful fixing.

Let's consider the most effective, frequently used techniques.

Chandelier mounting methods

Fixing the chandelier using a hook

The metal hook is the most simplified and reliable option. There are two ways to use different types of hooks:

1. When the mass of the chandelier is less than 3.5-4.0 kg, you can safely use a threaded hook. The installation technology is simple - having drilled the required (in diameter and depth) hole in the ceiling material, it is necessary to place a plastic dowel in the channel. Then it remains to carefully screw the hook to the maximum possible depth.

Attention! The hook holding the chandelier can only be fastened to concrete or to a massive wooden base (beams, logs, beams, etc.). It is unacceptable to mount the main element in drywall, plastic panels or decorative attachments!

2. If the lighting fixture is heavier than 4.0 kg, the technology will be different. In this case, you need to use special anchor bolts (d> = 10.0 mm2) with a spacer hook. Having drilled the desired channel, it is necessary to put an anchor in it and tighten it to the limit. Now, the fixture will be positioned securely under the ceiling.

To mask the fastening system, a decorative bowl-shaped element (included in the chandelier kit) is used. This part slides freely along the main bar and can be fixed in its upper part. Therefore, if desired, it is quite easy to adjust the height of the chandelier.

Fixing the chandelier with a bracket or strip

The second method of fastening, which involves the use of a strip or bracket, is more complicated, but available for independent execution.

The chandelier kit, if the product is of high quality, must include a metal bar (or bracket) intended for suspension. This element contains two screws that must be secured with the corresponding nuts. Now, the created complex is fixed to the ceiling, in which channels are pre-drilled and PVC dowels are installed.

The chandelier is brought to the ceiling and, by inserting bolts into special holes, is fixed to the ceiling.

Advice! If the ceiling is wooden, then the bracket is fixed with self-tapping screws for wood of the required length. And when the ceiling is a plasterboard structure, you need to fix the chandelier with self-tapping screws for metal to the supporting profile bar!

Simplified mounting option

When the purchased chandelier is small and light, you can do without auxiliary fixation mechanisms and fix the lighting fixture directly to the ceiling surface. At the base of these chandeliers there is a small metal plate with several holes for installation.

Installation technology is extremely simple. The locations of the screws are outlined and channels are drilled at these points. They are placed in the holes of the pvc dowels and the luminaire is fixed with at least 2 screws.

The process of placing and fixing a chandelier on the ceiling is full of various nuances, among which the most significant are:

1. Massive, elongated chandeliers are suitable for placement only on high ceilings, otherwise, in addition to aesthetic disharmony, there will be a danger of electric shock.

2. It is better to equip low ceilings with flat or small lamps, close to the surface. Otherwise, distinguished guests will be in uncomfortable conditions. Also, a large chandelier model in a small room will cause constant psychological discomfort due to the low overhang.

The method of connecting the chandelier to the network

The installation issues have been considered and now you can proceed to the most difficult stage - the creation of an electrical system with switches. Usually a luster kit is delivered ready-made, but sometimes you have to make an independent correction or completely redo the local wiring.

Consider the likely situations with switches:

One-key switches

There are no special incomprehensible moments here. From each plafond there is a pair of wires of the same color or different (this is not critical). One cord from all the shades must be brought into a single contact, and the others, into a second combined twist. Now we bring one connection to the phase wire, and the second to the zero, which go together from the switch.

Two-button switch

In fact, such a relay is a combination of two single-key devices, which has three outputs (common and two separate).

First, let's deal with the wires, of which we will have 4: two two-wire wires from the shades, a three-wire wire from the switch and a double wire from the electrical panel.

The connection principle is as follows:

- are combined into one twist, one conductor from each plafond and a neutral wire from the electrical panel;

- the phase conductor from the shield is connected to the common contact of the two-button switch;

- the remaining wire from each plafond is connected to the output of one of the keys;

At what height should the chandelier be hung, at what distance from the floor should the lowest point of the chandelier be, what should be the distance between the chandelier and the floor? These questions periodically arise among people who are going to purchase a ceiling pendant lamp or a classic chandelier for the house, as well as among most people when finishing the interior decoration of the house or when repairs in an apartment are completed. The answer is not as simple as it might seem. It all depends on the height of the ceilings, the area of the room, the purpose of the room in the house, as well as on what material the ceilings in your house are made of, no matter how strange it may sound.

If a chandelier is purchased for a living room, study, living room or bedroom, where the ceiling height is 2.5 - 3 meters, then it is recommended to hang the chandelier so that about 2 - 2.2 meters remain from the floor to the ceiling lamp. There are not very many people with a height of 2 meters and above. By hanging the chandelier at a distance of 2 meters from the floor, you can be sure that no one will accidentally hit it with your head or hand. People rarely raise their hands above their heads when they are at home. The exception is when a person makes the bed, puts on a T-shirt or sweater, and does exercises.

If possible hang the chandelier closer to the ceiling and away from the floor then hang it as close to the ceiling as possible. This recommendation is only suitable for rooms with low ceilings, where you need to visually increase the space between the floor and ceiling. This recommendation is especially relevant for rooms that have a solid area and low ceilings. In this version, a wide chandelier is ideal, and at the same time short in length.

The recommendation “hang the chandelier as close to the ceiling as possible” is relevant if it is a corridor in front of the entrance door or a hall where there are built-in wardrobes with high hinged doors, a high entrance door, high room doors that can touch the chandelier when opened. It should also be noted that in the hallway of the house, people take off and put on their outerwear, comb their hair, and manipulate hats and umbrellas. That is why in such rooms it is necessary to broadcast the chandelier as close to the ceiling as possible, or at such a distance from the floor that it is not accidentally hit by a person or a door.

The statement "hang the chandelier as close to the ceiling as possible" is relevant for bathrooms, since in these rooms there is a risk not only of touching the chandelier when washing or drying it with a towel, but also accidentally flooding it with water. The higher the chandelier hangs in the bathroom, the safer it is for herself and for a person. It is best to hang a ceiling chandelier in the bathroom, where the lamps are completely hidden by the shade, which will prevent water drops from falling on the light bulb. It is the drops of water that fall on the lamp that often cause the lamp to crack and crumble downward. Again, if the ceiling height in the bathroom is large, then you can hang a classic chandelier. In this case, one rule must be adhered to: the chandelier should be at the height of the outstretched hand of a person who stands at full height.

If your living space has high ceilings where the distance from the floor to the ceiling is more than 3 meters, then the suspension height of the chandelier here depends more on aesthetic considerations than on practical purposes. An important role is played by the area of the room, the diameter of the chandelier and the purpose of a particular room. Only one thing can be said with certainty, if the height of the ceilings allows, then broadcast the chandelier so that it can be reached with your fingertips if a person stretches his hand up. But at the same time, it is not necessary to specially shorten the chandelier, adjusting it to this statement. First of all, you should pay attention to the aesthetics of the interior at a given height of the chandelier.

Sometimes a pendant lamp or chandelier is located in an area that is not intended for full-length people to walk in. Such an area can form above the dining table or above the work table in the kitchen. At the same time, it is necessary that this area is well lit. There are options when in such places a pendant lamp or chandelier is hung very low. With this arrangement of the chandelier, it is difficult to recommend the height at which it should be above the floor or above the table. The only thing that can be advised is to hang the chandelier so that it does not shine in the eyes when eating or preparing it.

Most classic chandeliers have a chain that connects the main body of the chandelier to the lamps and the ceiling mount of the light fixture. The chain can usually be easily reduced by removing excess links from it. By purchasing a chandelier with a long chain, you can always make it shorter. By adjusting the length of the chain, you will achieve the optimal position of the chandelier between the floor and the ceiling.

For rooms with stretch ceilings there are slightly different rules for the location of the chandelier between the floor and the ceiling. The weak point of stretch ceilings is the susceptibility to heat from the chandelier. Stretch ceilings do not like temperatures that exceed 50-65 degrees Celsius. It is at this temperature that the ceiling is installed, after which it cools down and stretches like the skin of a drum. A chandelier can negatively affect a stretch ceiling if incandescent lamps are too close to it. Ceiling chandeliers can have a negative impact, where lamps are placed very close to the ceiling, and air ventilation of the interior space of the lamps is negligible. The minimum distance of incandescent lamps, the power of which is 60 watts, from the stretch ceiling is 0.4 meters. But nevertheless, stretch ceilings are different and it is best to find out similar distances from the craftsmen who installed the ceilings or from the manufacturer of the film for your ceiling.

It is best to play it safe and buy a chandelier with shades that look vertically down or down and slightly to the side. In such a chandelier, heat is accumulated mainly on the shades, from which it is successfully dissipated. In such chandeliers there is no direct hot air flow from the incandescent lamp to the ceiling. The second way to secure a stretch ceiling is with pendant chandeliers with LED lamps.

The situation is more complicated when the chandelier must be hung on two or even three floors... Here, as a rule, they choose a chandelier that looks equally good from all floors. A falling cascade of crystal, a chandelier with shades in several tiers or a spiral chandelier consisting of several suspended shades that hang at different heights from the ceiling are suitable as such a chandelier. The distance of the bottom point of the chandelier from the floor, in this case, is selected in the same way as in an ordinary room with high ceilings. The chandelier is placed at arm's length of a person standing in full growth or higher, it all depends on the configuration of the space in which the interfloor chandelier hangs.

It should be noted that today, during construction or renovation, little attention is paid to the strength of hooks for chandeliers and lamps. Buyers often ask: "Will my hook handle a heavy chandelier?" The question often arises when buying expensive heavy chandeliers made of brass, Murano glass, wrought iron. Strong hooks are necessary if you are going to hang a large chandelier in several tiers or even a small but heavy lamp. There is such a document as PUE - Rules for the Arrangement of Electrical Installations. PUE is the main document on the safe operation and installation of electrical installations in the Russian Federation and some CIS countries. The document states the following. “The ceiling hook or fixture for hanging the chandelier must be able to withstand five times the weight of the luminaire for 10 minutes. Once the load has been removed, there should be no deformed areas or visible damage on the hook. If you plan to hang a chandelier weighing 25 kilograms or more, then a load equal to twice the mass of the lamp plus another 80 kilograms is applied to the hook. " Before hanging an expensive and heavy chandelier, it is best to exercise caution and make sure the ceiling hook is strong.

Summing up our opus, I must say that the height at which the chandelier is located in the room, is not calculated by any formulas or tables. Everyone decides for himself how to hang the chandelier. First of all, it is necessary to rely on common sense and logic, and only secondarily on the aesthetics of the interior, with one or another distance of the chandelier from the floor.

Tell me how to shorten the chain on this chandelier? and got the best answer

Answer from Ostovchanka [guru]
The link does not open...

Answer from Vladimir Ageev[guru]
Show me which one - let's think about it
So, I opened the link with grief in half - it was broken from the beginning.
Which chain links are brazed or bent? How is the chain attached to the top and bottom?

Answer from Sergei Dmitriev[guru]
What is the problem? Bend the link (with two pliers) - shorten the chain - the wire to the ceiling or cut a little

Answer from Uncle from the Future ...[guru]
That's it.. . You remove unnecessary links and all shortening ....
And either cut the wire or push it into the hole in the ceiling ...

Answer from Lommaster Honored[guru]
cut the wires

Answer from Elena Pyatakova[newbie]
Late, of course, the chain has probably already been unbent with pliers. But I am writing, on Sun. case. The design of the chandelier - it turned out in the course of solving the same problem - involves the complete removal of the chain ... it is screwed on both sides. Then, using the resulting "spare parts", the top of the chandelier is assembled again. I also had such a problem: since the "cup", "glass" or whatever it was, it became impossible to lower it, it became inconvenient to hang it on a hook (I am silent about the wires). I had to screw a small instead of a ring. another, large diameter, which held the chain (now I had to unbend! :)) - it also fits, I hope it will withstand. The distance m. Cup and ceiling, of course, is greater, but it is easier to put on the hook, and the wires together with the terminal stake. shove. While hanging ... :))
