Much in the garden can and should be done with your own hands. Often this requires very little time and minimal material costs. In addition, you don’t have to be a professional - even a beginner can do many crafts. For example, various drinking devices for migratory and domestic birds.

Purpose

Naturally, drinkers for garden songbirds are very different in shape, size, and design from water supply systems for poultry.

Since time immemorial, people have been raising chickens to produce dietary meat and eggs. The productivity of laying hens directly depends on a well-thought-out feeding and drinking system. They should be convenient and easy to use. Therefore, it is often easier to think through and make drinking bowls for your home than to spend a long time searching for suitable ones in stores. The best thing is to set up an uninterrupted system for filling drinking containers with water.

Another thing is hand-made decorative bird drinkers in the garden. They attract birds, which help fight insect pests, and at the same time serve as landscape decoration elements. It is not difficult to construct them from available materials, having free time and a little imagination.

Peculiarities

Surely there are some unnecessary items on the farm that you can use to make your own birdbath. A variety of available materials will be used: cement, plaster, wire, wood, as well as plastic bottles - where would we be without them?

The simplest bird drinker is a bowl in various modifications. It is filled with water manually. This idea can be wonderfully developed and made into an exclusive designer item for your favorite garden.

To create vacuum bird drinkers with your own hands, you only need to slightly improve the usual one.

Its action is based on the phenomenon of fluid pressure in vessels, familiar from school physics courses. Some of the water from the neck of the inverted bottle is poured into a flat container, and the pressure in both containers is balanced. When the water level in the plate decreases, an airless layer is formed between the two layers of water, and, due to the pressure difference, the water is again poured into the lower container until they are balanced. Therefore, the water in the plate is always replenished automatically, and all that remains is to monitor the fullness of the bottle, periodically filling it to the top. This idea is much more convenient, since in a regular bowl the water quickly evaporates and is splashed by the birds.

Songbird drinkers - garden decoration

First you need to think about where it is best to install them. Since birds are usually attracted to the garden to combat harmful insects, it is advisable to leave drinking water in these areas. It is more advisable to place drinking bowls in the shade so that it does not evaporate too quickly.

Taking these points into account, you can create several cozy corners in the garden, decorated with a variety of man-made devices for birds. For such an interior drinking bowl, it is enough to choose a beautiful, durable bowl and decorate it with pebbles, tiny plaster figures of birds, fish, and frogs.

Leaves in the grass

If you have the desire and time to do something truly hand-made and unique, you can use the following idea. You will need a little cement and water to mix the solution. You also need some kind of flat surface for the workspace - a regular piece of plywood will do.

As a decorative form, you can use a large leaf of cabbage or burdock. For painting, it is very important to choose a paint that is durable and non-toxic. Otherwise, there will be a strong chemical smell. You will also need: plastic film, fine sandpaper and gloves to protect your hands.

The surface of the desktop should be covered with plastic wrap or newspaper for protection. Cement mortar is mixed in a separate container. It should be quite plastic - approximately like sour cream. You need to pour a little sand onto the work surface in a heap - approximately this depth will be a garden birdbath. With your own hands, first lay a film on the sand, then a burdock leaf to give the shape of a cup. Next comes the cement mixture, it needs to be leveled with your hands, watching the thickness of the layer - it should be uniform over the entire area. After this, the craft remains for about a day, and after it has completely dried, you can begin to create an exclusive bird drinker with your own hands from a nondescript workpiece.

Use sandpaper to thoroughly sand the surface. Not only the appearance of the product, but also its durability depends on this. The next stage of work is painting. It is better to choose paints in natural shades. An interesting effect can be achieved if you paint the top and bottom of the sheet in different tones of the same color. After staining, the container must be thoroughly dried again. Now you can apply a final coat of varnish to protect the surface from damage by water and wind. If you sculpt several similar leaves, you will get a lovely garden composition, where flocks of chirping birds will happily flock to drink water.

Hanging drinker

To make this masterpiece you will need ordinary utensils such as a deep cup.

The material should be something that can be easily drilled into, such as clear plastic. Making such a bird drinker with your own hands will not take much time and effort. It’s also great that all consumables are available. Since the design is supposed to be elegant and airy, it is worth choosing a cup of a suitable design. In addition, you will need thick wire or ready-made fasteners in the form

S , decorative rope or metal chain.

First, you need to make symmetrical markings for four holes in the edges of the bowl. You can make them using a hot awl or even a nail. To hang it, you need to take two pieces of chain or rope of equal length. S -shaped wire hooks are passed through holes in the dish with one end, and secured with the other in loops at the ends of a chain or rope. If you take a glass bowl with wide, downward-curved edges, then the hooks simply hook onto the edges of the bowl. The finished drinking bowl can be hung on a tree branch and filled with water. If the bowl is made of lightweight material, you can place several stones at the bottom for greater stability.

Nest on a stump

Another idea on how to make a birdbath with your own hands and at the same time decorate the stump from

It is better to choose a bowl from any natural material, such as clay or wood, in natural warm shades. Its diameter should be greater than the cut in circumference. The wire frame is also formed into a bowl and securely attached to the stump. First, a “nest” woven from thin twigs and dry grass is placed in it, and the drinking bowl itself is installed on top. In this case, it can be easily removed for washing. The stump can be painted, decorated or coated with a protective varnish.

Vacuum drinker

You can improve the previous option - make a birdbath with your own hands from a plastic bottle.

An inverted bottle is placed in a suitable small but deep container. It is important that its neck is below the edges of the container, otherwise water will constantly pour out. This simple structure is attached using two thick wire clamps connected to the bowl. To make it more decorative, you should look for a beautiful unusual bottle and a transparent bowl for water. Wire fastenings can also be turned into a design element.

From reviews of vacuum drinkers:

“The simpler the better! Simple, cheap and effective. Just what you need! Why buy expensive factory drinking bowls, if you can make the same one from a simple bottle, and almost for free.”

“Any drinking bowl should be changed not once a week, but more often, so that the water does not stagnate.”

For poultry house

Here, too, you can do a lot with your own hands. Bird drinkers and feeders, for example. However, in this case, the device can be convenient, functional and at the same time decorative.

Based on this principle, the simplest is the vacuum drinker described above. It is worth considering that chickens are quite large birds. They can push the drinker hard, so it needs to be securely fastened to the wall, preferably not with wire, but with a metal strip. The bottom tray must also be sufficiently stable.

Nipple drinking system

The main advantage of this idea is that such a drinking bowl does not require a bowl, in which various debris constantly accumulates and has to be washed.

Hens and chicks press the nipple with their beaks. Therefore, water comes from the hole in doses; below, under the drinker, there is practically no water. To make nipple drinkers for birds at home with your own hands, you can use any capacious plastic container. You need to make 4-5 holes in the bottom into which the nipples are screwed tightly, according to the diagram. When used, the container itself must be placed in a metal frame that reliably fixes its position.

It is better to make it from steel strip. Water is poured into the container, which just needs to be rinsed well periodically, otherwise the nipples will quickly fail due to debris. It is advisable to place a large flat container underneath such a drinking bowl to drain the water. Such a water supply system significantly saves time and effort on cleaning the poultry house and looks quite aesthetically pleasing.

“If you use such a drinker, the chickens will always have clean water, the owners do not have to constantly monitor the availability of water, and the chickens will not get wet.”

« Much also depends on the quality of the nipples themselves. If we replace them with good quality nipples, the problem will be solved.”

People have been raising chickens since time immemorial. For some it is a business, for others it is an activity for pleasure, for others it is a desire to provide only themselves and their family with dietary meat and eggs.

But to achieve results, you need to work hard, as anywhere else. If you or your family live in a rural area or have a summer cottage, then you can do a lot yourself for your own pleasure and to save money.

A drinking bowl is an indispensable and necessary item in raising any poultry. You don't have to buy it. All or part of it is made with one’s own hands from available materials.

There are general requirements for them that need to be taken into account if you intend to make them yourself:

  • she must be easy to use. The water container must be easy to fill, if necessary manually or via the plumbing system. You should also immediately think about free access to the bottom of the container. For example, if you use a 200-liter barrel with a 10 cm cap as a tank, it will be easy to fill, but impossible to wash or clean from the inside;
  • safety requirement. Includes the use of quality material to produce. If the container and pipes are metal, they are made of stainless steel. If you choose plastic, PVC, or other plastic, its substances cannot be toxic or harmful to the bird. The material must not react with water-soluble drugs;
  • she should not get dirty long term. The bird should not bathe in it or otherwise litter it. To do this, open areas of water are minimized in area;
  • they are made sustainable resistant to overturning or well secured (depending on the design) and durable (material, design);
  • their design must optimally perform its function - from it the bird must drink freely, no problem.

Homemade nipple drinker

If your goal is to design a nipple drip drinker, you need the following:

  • nipple;
  • dropletrvitel;
  • pipe(water flows through it) with a plug and outlet;
  • capacity for water (if it is not taken from a water supply with a regulator (if it comes under pressure).
Nipple drinker device

If we take it directly from the water supply system, we don’t have to place the container. But settled one is preferable. Therefore, as an example, we consider the second design option. We attach a PVC pipe of the required length to the tank at a distance of 5-10 cm from its bottom.

If one is not enough, we extend it from several using connectors. We drill holes in the pipe at equal distances for the nipple and separately for the drip eliminator.

Nipple connection

Note: a hole must be drilled for each nipple separately. If we use a drip catcher, it is installed next to the nipple.

One end crimps the pipe, the other is shaped like a spoon, which collects water from the nipple while the bird drinks. You can buy a drip catcher or make it yourself from a plastic bottle.

You can do it yourself in another way

You need to take any container with a capacity of 10-30 liters and nipples - 4 or 5 (depending on the diameter of the bottom). First we drill holes for the nipple.

Drinking bowl from a container

There are nipples that operate 360 degrees, and others that operate 180 (up and down).

Do-it-yourself vacuum variety

This design is used mainly for chickens. It supplies water using a vacuum, which constantly flows from the container when it is needed, that is, until the poultry drinks it. Then the container is filled again.

We make it from 5 liter plastic bottles

It’s not difficult to make a vacuum-type structure yourself. In this case, you do not need to buy anything additional, as in the option described above.

Option #1

For this we will need: One plastic bottle for 2.5 liters and one for 5 liters and 2 screws.

Attention! When making this type of vacuum design, it is necessary that the sides of the 5-liter part of the bottle are located above the hole for water leakage.

Option No. 2

A drinking bowl can be made from a 10-liter plastic bottle using a simplified design. It is also suitable for 5-liter.

First, we make a 6-7 mm hole in a 10-liter bottle at approximately a distance of 5 cm from the bottom. But the distance will directly depend on the vessel in which you place the bottle. If it is deep, then the hole is made higher.

Option with bottle and vessel

Next, we place it filled with water in a container. It will stop flowing from the bottle as soon as its level reaches the hole. You can fill the bottle on the spot by unscrewing the cap from the top. This is also a type of vacuum feeding system.

Important! The bottle is hermetically sealed with a lid.

Pipe sippy cup for chickens

Construction of a pipe sippy cup

An open type drinking bowl is made from a plastic sewer pipe with a diameter of ten to fifteen centimeters. To do this, several rectangular holes 25-35 centimeters long are cut in the pipe. In this case, the first and last holes are made at a distance of 10-20 cm from its edge.

The distance between the holes must also be 10-20 centimeters. They are cut with a grinder or other tools. The edges are cleaned to avoid possible scratches and cuts.

Tees with plugs are installed on the edges of the pipe. When you need to add water, remove the inlet plug, pour it out - the drain plug. You can connect this type of structure to an existing water supply network, fill it with water if necessary, and then turn it off with a tap. This will allow you to fill it without effort.

In a chicken coop for roosters and laying hens, it is secured with clamps of the same diameter as the pipe. They are fixed in such a way that the pipe is raised 15-20 centimeters from the floor (ground). Install it at a slight slope (1-2 degrees) to flush the pipe, and the contents drain by gravity.

Water in such a design quickly becomes dirty and loses freshness; the pipe is often washed. To do this, install not a plug, but a drain valve, on the tee at the other end of the pipe. This makes it easier to work with the drain.

For information: This type of design is not suitable for chickens as they may choke or drown.

Drip model for chicks

It is preferable to install a drinking bowl for chickens either of a vacuum type or of a nipple type. If you choose the first option, make sure that the chickens do not choke in the vessel into which water will flow from the bottle, that is, that the sides of the vessel are not high.

Diagram and design of the sippy cup

If their population is small, buy a vessel for a homemade vacuum drinker (in the form of a saucer and turn a glass jar onto it).

Chicks in the first days of life are defenseless. If they are raised separately from the hen, people care about their safety. As chickens age, they become more active. This means that the drinker needs to be well secured to avoid the danger of it overturning and injury to young animals. In addition, due to accidentally spilled water, the litter becomes wet, which leads to illness in the bird.

Important! In no case should you place a simple vessel for chickens, especially with high sides - the likelihood that they will choke or drown increases.

You can use a design version of a nipple drinker. Then it is important to secure it at the level of the chickens’ heads.

Let's compare the types of water dispensers for birds

Nipple: easy to use, safe, retains clean water for a long period of time, does not tip over. More suitable for adult birds. The central pipe can be connected to a large container that acts as a reservoir.

They are also connected to an existing water supply. Among the disadvantages, one can note its high cost, since almost all the components of this type of structure will have to be purchased.

Vacuum: convenient, pollutes water more than the nipple type, is safe if it is well fixed, does not require any money to manufacture, and is easy to make yourself. More suitable for chickens.

Disadvantages: if you do not secure it sufficiently, there is a possibility of it toppling over; you must constantly pour water into the container. If its volume is small, this should be done often.

Pipe drinker: convenient, more used for adult livestock, durable, resistant to tipping over, provided it is well fixed, it can be used to feed a large number of heads, it can be connected either to a tank or to a water supply system.

Disadvantage: not suitable for chickens, the water in it quickly becomes dirty.

It is better to choose what type of drinking bowl to make with your own hands, based on the availability of available materials and financial capabilities.

Over the weekend, while watering the beds at the dacha, I noticed how two birds were bathing in the splashes of water from the watering hose, right in the place where the latter had the temerity to leak. More precisely, it was not the hose itself that leaked, but the connection of its two parts. Apparently the birds were so hot that they allowed them to approach almost 3 meters and did not fly away, although in a normal situation this distance was never reduced to less than 5-6 meters. They looked at the gathered people with curiosity and continued to splash and drink water, hinting that it was hot now for everyone, not just people.

Almost immediately, my engineering thought began to work towards creating an automatic device, different from a banal cup of water, in which water evaporates faster and splashes more, but at the same time, has a not too complex and cost-intensive design. The materials at hand included plastic bottles of various sizes and volumes, and I chose this material.

I took a round bottle (not square) of 5 liters, in which ordinary drinking water was sold, and a 2-liter bottle of mineral water. The lids of both containers have different diameters; I drilled them exactly in the center, connected them with a bolt and clamped them with two nuts and washers. Bottle caps must be inserted into one another so that the threads of the caps of both the first and the second are on the same side. Then I cut a large bottle (5 l) so that a bowl was formed from the thread to the cut line, and in the bottle (2 l) I made a hole with a diameter of about 1 cm. The distance from the neck of the bottle to the hole in the bottle should be less than the distance from the thread of the bottle to the edges of the bowl of a large baklashka. When I assembled the structure, it looked like this: a drinking bowl.

The essence of this design is that as soon as the water through the hole in the bottle reaches the level of this hole, the bowl will immediately stop filling. If the water decreases, until the water level drops below this hole and the bowl is replenished immediately. In other words, if birds drink water from a bowl, then there will be water in the bowl as long as there is water in the bottle, and there is almost 2 liters of it, and these two liters will not immediately pour out onto the ground and will not evaporate, but will be consumed gradually. All that remains is to fill the drinking bowl with water and secure it to the tree.

At first, the birds were very wary of the new object on their territory. The ubiquitous tits were the first to venture into exploration. First, they examined the “object” from a safe distance, then some of them tried to drink water, and then the party began in full swing. The tits began to drink and swim in the new reservoir. Looking at all this from the side, the nuthatches began to follow the tits. Soon a line formed at the drinking bowl and the usual bird leapfrog began.

In general, this drinker does not require any special costs or effort, and the benefits from it are quite real, the importance of which is quite difficult to overestimate in such weather. After all, that hunger and cold in winter, that heat and drought in summer are all the same for our smaller brothers...

Sergey Smorovoz, hot summer 2010

Garden landscape decorations can be not only interesting, original and pretty, but also quite useful. Today we will tell every reader of the site about how to make a birdbath with your own hands, and at the same time create a real masterpiece!

In fact, many people expect from the article something extremely basic, like a drinking bowl made from a plastic bottle, but today we are more interested in a different product, which will require a little more work. Naturally, it will be inexpensive, because if we wanted to buy something like that, we would simply go to a store of original figurines and garden items.

So, be careful, because the next few paragraphs will tell you how to make an original birdbath with your own hands.

Materials for creating a drinking bowl

We start with the selection of materials, and immediately rush to reassure all summer residents, since we only need cement, water, sand, paint, thin plastic film, a piece of old pipe and a leaf of rhubarb or burdock.

The only tools you will need are a grinder; you will also need rubber gloves and a paint brush.

How to make a birdbath yourself

Everything is very simple with us, and we are not going to burden you with too complex “recipes”, since there is an elementary one that is accessible to every summer resident, and it is already in front of you. Our drinking bowl will be made from cement mortar, from concrete, which we repeatedly prepared during construction at the dacha.

Preparing for drinking bowl production

  • Initially, we need to find a piece of plywood or chipboard on which we can work. It can be old, previously used material, as long as it is smooth.
  • In addition, you will need to mix the cement mortar and make it have a creamy consistency. Try to mix the solution well so that there are no lumps or undissolved material, which will negatively affect the quality of the product.
  • Next, actions with a piece of an old pipe, or rather, with two pieces of different diameters. We deepen a piece of pipe of larger diameter into the soil at the place where the drinker is installed, approximately 30 cm, leaving 20-40 cm of pipe above the surface. From a piece of pipe with a smaller diameter, use a grinder to cut a small piece, approximately 5-8 cm.

Making a drinking bowl from concrete

We lay a plastic oilcloth or a layer of paper on the found surface so as not to smear the wood and spoil it. After this, we pour a small pile of sand and stretch it to the shape of a rhubarb leaf, which we need for shaping. Now we lay a plastic film on the sand, and a rhubarb leaf on top of it, and level everything, bringing the drinking bowl into the required shape.

When the preparation is complete, we can fill our mold with cement. It should be poured onto the mold in an even layer and spread with your fingers along the edge of the rhubarb leaf.

Now all that remains is to wait about a day to get a draft version of the drinker.

We still had an unresolved issue with a small piece of pipe, which we cut off with a grinder. So, it is needed in order to embed it in the cement during pouring and molding. Thus, you can get a drinking bowl on a small leg, with the help of which you can install the craft on the first pipe, which we talked about earlier. In addition, an interesting idea is to strengthen the drinking bowl, which can be done by laying a cement mortar with a mounting mesh and tightly embedding it into the material.

Decorative finishing of a homemade drinking bowl

A gray and rough concrete drinking bowl does not look very interesting, and it can easily spoil the aesthetics of the garden if installed there without finishing. Therefore, we propose to take the simplest measures that will help not only protect the material of our work, but also significantly change its external data.

You can sand the drinker a little, paint it with different colors or a single color, cover the top and bottom of the craft with multi-colored paints, give it the shade of a leaf or the main color of your landscape.

There is freedom for your imagination here, however, remember that the paints for the drinking bowl should be chosen non-toxic, so as not to scare away the birds or poison them with decay products.

Brilliant, I would never have thought of this, tomorrow I’ll go to the city for materials, otherwise we raise pheasants for beauty, and we feed them from an old enamel bucket. The only thing that confuses me is the composition of the paint, will it harm the birds? Maybe cover the top with glaze, like on plates that are hand-painted, but I can’t imagine where this is sold.

Oleg Povalov 01/13/2016

The varnish will peel off in any case, so this is probably not the best way :)
As for me, such drinking bowls are only needed for decoration; in practice, it’s unlikely that anything will really work out; we buy drinking bowls for chickens here all the time, like plastic ones, but we’ve never had any problems.

And to solve the problem with environmental friendliness, you can try to cover the surface with good glue and fill it with sand on top, the sand will stick well, and even if it peels, it will not harm the tiles.

  • It's no secret that birds in a summer cottage are almost always a good thing. Naturally, with the exception of a large number of them, when the birds begin to eat fruit trees and bushes, but even in this case you should not despair, because it is always yours. Sparrows, titmice and bullfinches are of particular importance on the site. In summer, birds free the garden from harmful insects that can destroy the entire area. In winter, birds delight garden owners with their chirping sounds.

In order for birds to want to live on your site, they need to create good living conditions. The best way to lure birds is to create bird feeders and waterers with your own hands. You can put bread or cereal grains in them, just be very careful, since not all cereals are suitable for birds to eat. Some species can make them sick or even die. Naturally, only a feeder is not enough for them; birds love water, so they cannot do without a drinking bowl.

    What is a feeder-drinker?

In almost all cases, the feeder-drinker is a small plastic box without a lid with two or more fasteners. Either food is poured into it or water is poured into it. This is its main drawback. Although this design is called a “feeder-drinker,” it still performs only one function. It is impossible to combine the two; you won’t pour water into the cereal or vice versa. Another significant disadvantage is that such structures are sold without lids, and any natural sediment can spoil the food or water for the birds. Naturally, you can buy a bird feeder and a bird drinker separately, that is, two separate containers. Or you can make them yourself.

How to make a drinking bowl with your own hands from plastic bottles?

The simplest option is a drinking bowl made of plastic containers. If you do everything according to the instructions, then you can build such a structure in literally half an hour, and sometimes it takes less time. To create it, you need to purchase two plastic containers: the first with a volume of 5 liters, the second with a volume of 2 liters.

Algorithm for creating a drinking bowl with your own hands:

    1. A plastic container with a volume of 5 liters should be cut so that it does not turn out to be a bowl with a stopper at the bottom. Its depth should not exceed 12 centimeters, since you should not forget that the birds should be as comfortable as possible in using the drinker.

    2. The corks are unscrewed from both bottles and connected to each other using a bolt. Since they are of different diameters, a small plug is inserted into a large one, secured and screwed.

    3. Take a two-liter plastic container, you need to make a small hole in it (no more than 10 mm). The height of the hole should not exceed the depth of the five-liter plastic container. Based on the fact that we made the bowl about 12 centimeters, then the hole in a two-liter container should be made at a height of 8-9 centimeters from the throat.

    4. A two-liter container is filled with water and screwed to the bowl using connected stoppers.

    5. The most important thing remains - installing this birdbath with your own hands. The container is turned upside down, and it turns out that water flows from a two-liter container into the bowl. Please note that it will only build up to the level to which the hole is made. As soon as the water begins to evaporate or the birds drink it, everything will automatically repeat itself and the water will always be in the bowl. Here's a simple and amazing design you can get.

    Nipple bird drinkers

This version of drinking bowls differs significantly from the previous method. Such designs are sold in special stores, and their cost is minimal. However, for masters, in this article we will tell you the principle of its creation.

The first thing to understand is that this is not an automatic drinker, that is, there will not be a constant supply of water. This container is made according to the principle of a washstand - press a button and the water flows. Birds are very smart, so they immediately begin to understand how this system works. To prevent water from dripping onto the ground, the structures are made with special drip eliminators, which are installed under the nipple.

    How to make vacuum drinkers?

The method of operation of such a container is exactly the same as a container made of two plastic bottles. There is only one difference - you made the plastic drinkers yourself, while the vacuum ones were created for you by the equipment at the factory. This drinking bowl is a large flask with a bowl. The flask is an analogue of a two-liter bottle, and the bowl lid is an analogue of a five-liter eggplant. Such designs are quite easy to use.

How to make a birdbath out of concrete?

If you have enough time, energy and strength, you can create a real pool for birds. You can decorate it in a unique style. You only need two elements: burdock (leaves) and a cement mixture. A handful of sand is poured onto the surface, and several burdock leaves are placed on it (face down). Next, the solution is diluted (1 part cement and 3 parts sand). It is diluted to a homogeneous substance with water. The mixture you have obtained is applied to the leaves.

The thickness of the cement mortar should not exceed 2 centimeters. Moreover, towards the edges the layer decreases somewhat. The future drinking bowl is covered with polyethylene and waited for complete drying. Afterwards, the burdock leaf is carefully separated from the solution. Actually, this completes the entire creation of a bird drinker. All that remains is to carefully process the edges and paint them in a colorful color. This drinker will suit any garden landscape.
