Fencing an industrial zone, public areas or private property is unthinkable without installing a fence. An indispensable component is the entrance gate. You can save money by making such an object yourself.

Swing gate designs, types and designs

Swing gates have a simple design and are the easiest to automate. This is especially important for gates installed on production sites with large traffic volumes.

The design of a gate without a mechanism for opening and closing it is inconvenient, since in this case you will have to get out of the car, open and lock the doors one by one, drive into the yard, and then perform all the steps in reverse order. This takes a lot of time, and it is especially unpleasant to do it in bad weather.

Swing gates made of picket fence are easy to make and require few materials Sheet metal swing gates are reliable and durable Lightweight swing gates made of forged lattice are not only protection of the site, but also its decoration A solid wooden leaf makes the gate more reliable

Selecting the direction of opening the doors

Gate leaves can open in two directions: outward or inward.

The first option is preferable when the yard has a small area. The disadvantage of this solution is the need to install the gate opening/closing mechanism in a hidden position. To do this, it is placed in a pit. This solution requires additional costs for sealing and entails the need to lengthen the axes of the valves to install the drive lever. When opening inward, the mechanism is installed directly on the gate post, and the levers are attached to the door leaf.

Choice of fabric design

At this design stage, errors most often occur, the cause of which is the direction and strength of the wind at the location where the gate is installed that is not taken into account. If the area is characterized by strong, stable winds, it is preferable to choose a lattice structure, since it has less windage compared to a solid canvas. Under the influence of wind loads, the mechanisms for moving the sashes are overloaded and fail faster.

General design features

On any gate there are a number of elements that you need to pay attention to:

  1. Hinges are parts that secure the doors to supporting poles. Their number and power should ensure smooth movement of the valves for a long time.
  2. The central lock is an element necessary for installing the sashes in the closed position.
  3. Extreme clamps are parts for temporarily fixing the leaves when the gate is wide open.
  4. The lock is a massive latch, a hasp with hinges, or simply hinges for a lock, attached to the doors 1–1.2 m from the bottom edge.

Preparatory work for the installation of gates

The result of all work on assembling and installing the gate depends on the thoroughness of the preparation. Preparatory work includes the following:

  • development of a preliminary design of the entrance with details and drawing up a bill of materials;
  • revision of the remains of building materials from previous construction and inclusion of suitable parts in the project;
  • acquisition of materials in accordance with the material list;
  • production of parts, purchase of related materials and missing tools.

Based on the sketch above, all that remains is to count the number of elements for each position in order to obtain a material statement. It is also necessary to consider the methods of execution (welding, riveting), the material for the protective coating, the dimensions of the concrete foundations and other structural elements. These items in the required quantities are also included in the bill of materials.

Selection of materials for swing gates

This is perhaps the most important point. Even a perfectly executed gate may look completely out of place on the property if it does not harmonize with the fence of the property or the color of the roof of the house. A unified design style is important.

The most common are metal products in various combinations.

In this case, the combination of brick, wooden picket fence and brown corrugated board seems doubtful. This solution can only be in harmony with a wooden house on the site.

The photo below shows an example of a more successful combination of gates and fencing in color and style. This option is made from almost the same materials. Elements of the simplest forging from a rod are available for self-production.

The use of a relatively new material in combination with metal - cellular and monolithic polycarbonate - must be considered successful.

The advantages of this material are its high strength, ease of processing and a large selection of tints and degrees of transparency.

It is impossible to list or show all the variety of combinations of different materials for the manufacture of swing gates. A successful solution with minimal costs depends only on the performer.

Materials and tools for making swing gates

Everything necessary for the manufacture of gates has already been calculated at the design stage and drawing up a bill of materials. This applies not only to basic, but also to auxiliary materials. You only need to add wooden beams to make the slipway, which is necessary to ensure the flatness of the sash during the assembly process.

When installing a slipway, you need to pay attention to the flatness of its load-bearing elements. Since this is only an auxiliary structure, there is no need to saw off the protruding ends during the assembly process, and the material can later be used for other purposes.

Tools, accessories and materials

Considering the need for these products, we will stipulate the initial conditions. Let's assume that you need to make gate leaves of a combined design using metal profiles in the form of a rectangular pipe 80x40 mm for the main frame, the same material 40x40 mm in size for the jibs and stiffeners, as well as a wooden board - lining for filling the leaf leaf.

To work you will need:

  1. A hand-held grinder (grinder) for cutting metal profiles and processing the cutting area in order to grind sharp edges and remove burrs.
  2. Abrasive discs for grinders.
  3. Bench square - for marking the cutting area.
  4. Three-meter tape measure - for taking measurements.
  5. Clamps for fixing parts before welding.
  6. Household welding machine.
  7. Electrodes corresponding to the material of the valves.
  8. Hammer for removing scale from welds.
  9. Wood hacksaw for working with lining.
  10. Screwdriver - for attaching wooden parts to the frame of the doors.
  11. Self-tapping screws - for the same purposes.
  12. Electric drill - for drilling holes for self-tapping screws of the appropriate size.
  13. Bench vice - for securing rods in the manufacture of clamps.
  14. Construction plumb line - to control verticality when installing sashes on support pillars.
  15. Construction level for adjusting the position of the load-bearing structures of the slipway.
  16. Metal primer and corresponding paint - for applying a protective coating to metal parts.
  17. Compositions for antiseptic treatment of wooden parts and fire-resistant impregnation for wood.

During the work, other tools and equipment may be needed.

Installation of swing gates, step-by-step instructions

Gate installation must begin with the installation of support posts.

Installation of support pillars

For support pillars, rectangular pipes measuring 100x100 mm are used, preferably galvanized. If the pipe is electric welded, then the longitudinal seam should be located on the opposite side from the installation site of the canopies.

Pits for poles are best made using a garden auger with a diameter of 250 mm.

It is convenient to drill holes for support posts using a garden auger

The depth of the pit depends on the depth of soil freezing in the area where the work is being carried out. For the Moscow region, this value is 180 cm, therefore, the pit should be 15 cm deeper. If this requirement is not met, in winter, as a result of soil movement, the support pillars may become skewed.

At the bottom of the hole you need to arrange drainage. To do this, sand is poured onto the bottom (layer height 10 cm), then medium-fraction gravel (layer height 5 cm).

Concreting is carried out in the following order:

Simultaneously with concreting the support posts, it is necessary to make a central support with the installation of a metal embedded part on it. It is more convenient to make holes for the locking pins later - when hanging the sashes with markings in place.

Manufacturing of sashes

While the concrete is curing, you can install the slipway and begin manufacturing swing gate leaves. To do this you need:

  • measure the distance between the support pillars and, if necessary, make adjustments to the longitudinal dimensions;
  • install a slipway;
  • prepare the sash parts for assembly;
  • lay the structural elements on the slipway, secure them with clamps;
  • check the correctness of the diagonal layout and dimensions, correct if necessary;
  • weld the structure;
  • after completing all welded joints, remove the slag with a hammer, inspect each seam, and re-weld if necessary;
  • paint the surface with primer and dry;
  • apply a final protective coating (paint);
  • install the inner leaf of the sashes, secure in the chosen way.

Installation of sashes

The sashes must be installed in the “closed” position on a temporary mount, while:

  1. Provide gaps between the support posts and the doors equal to the size of the gate hinges. It is convenient to use wooden spacers for this. The gap between the sashes should be from 10 to 50 mm.
  2. The distance from the bottom edge of the sashes to the ground must be at least 50 mm.
  3. The height of the sashes is installed on temporary linings.
  4. Check the freedom of movement of the valves when opening them. To do this, you need to install a bar on the lower edge of the gate perpendicular to the wings. The length of the strip should be equal to the width of the sash. Align the bar horizontally with a level. The far end of the plank should not be in contact with the ground. Otherwise, the sash will hit the ground when opening.
  5. After taking all the necessary measurements, you can install the awnings. To do this, they are placed in the provided gap and welded to the support pillars and sashes.

    Swing gate canopies are welded to the support pillars

  6. If galvanized pipes were used for the pillars, the welds must be thoroughly cleaned and painted over with special paint, which consists of 95% zinc powder. Otherwise, the metal will actively corrode and the poles will quickly fail.
  7. Mark and drill holes for the fixing pins and install them in place.
  8. A plate of suitable size must be welded to the top of the support post to plug the hole.

    Fixing pins are needed only during long periods of absence of the owners or in strong winds to avoid damage to the mechanism from wind loads

Choosing automation for swing gates

Most often, linear and lever actuators with electric traction, as well as hydraulic drives, are used as a device for opening/closing gates.

Linear drives

The popularity of linear mechanisms is due to their lower cost compared to lever mechanisms and their higher power and stability in operation. Their market share is about 95%.

The design feature of such mechanisms is the use of a worm screw, which allows them to withstand increased loads. An important factor determining the popularity of linear actuators is also the ability to use them to open gates both inward and outward. An additional advantage is the ability to install them on narrow poles.

Lever gate drives

The main feature of such mechanisms is smooth operation when opening and closing, which is due to the design features.

The gear motor drives the levers connected to the doors through a worm gear. Opening/closing can be done in any direction at an angle of up to 110°.

Automatic gate control

Mechanization of gate operation does not provide any advantages if used without automatic control. It is convenient to open them by simply pressing a button on the control panel.

Designations in the figure:

  1. Left leaf drive.
  2. Right leaf drive.
  3. Control Panel.
  4. Signal receiving device.
  5. Photocells for safety.
  6. Signal lamp.
  7. Receiving antenna.
  8. Racks for installing photocells.

Here is a minimum set of control devices to ensure the operation of swing gates.

Additional devices on swing gates

Automated swing gates do not require any additional structural elements.

But situations are possible when the entire structure is subject to critical loads. This primarily applies to solid doors in strong winds. Therefore, traditional bolts and pins at the bottom of the sashes are used for insurance. The material for their manufacture is usually the remains of the main structure of the valves, bent steel rods with a diameter of 12–16 mm. A metal strip 4 mm thick is used for locking loops.

All these additional elements are used during the long absence of the owners or in the event of unfavorable weather conditions.

Video: making automatic swing gates with your own hands

Beautiful, properly made automated gates are not only a decoration for a country house, but also a reliable security device. Most developers can do it themselves.

Swing. In this article we will tell you how to make swing gates with your own hands, look at the example of making metal and automatic gates, and provide explanatory photos, diagrams and drawings.

Regardless of the chosen design, you reserve the right to choose the method of opening them - into the yard or out. Making swing gates is not difficult at all. The classic form of swing gates has a number of distinctive features:

  • Functionality.
  • Ease of use.
  • Compactness.
  • No beams or guide rollers.
  • There are no size restrictions.
  • Possibility to use different materials for manufacturing.
  • Possibility to use all kinds of details for decoration.

Types of metal structures

Before you start making gates, it is important to decide on their design. The choice depends on the frequency of their use. Several types of gates can be made from metal; we will consider each one separately.

This type of design is not as popular. They are one continuous fabric. In order for them to function well, the support column must be reliably strengthened, which will require a lot of money. If such gates are installed on a garage, then it is necessary to build a powerful metal frame and reinforced hinges. Moreover, the disadvantage is that it is necessary to provide sufficient space to open single-leaf swing gates.

The most common and convenient type of swing gate. Without any effort, they can be made at home. Moreover, their design includes two identical canvases. Therefore, a frame is made of two frames and sheathed with sheet material. Unlike the previous design, less free space is required to open.

For daily use, these gates are very convenient. Moreover, they are made according to the same principle as ordinary double-leaf gates. The only difference is that you attach an additional beam and support to install the gate in the right place on one of the leaves. If a gate of this type is mounted on a garage, then a mortise type of gate is used. In this case, the required hole is cut out in one of the gate leaves and the door is installed.

Forged swing gates are made more for aesthetic effect. If the structure is made in the form of closed elements, then decorative forging is used, but an open type of gate is often used.

As for the garage, a predominantly closed type of gate with individual forging elements is used for their construction.

Regardless of the type of construction, garage doors can be insulated. Due to this, heat will be retained in the garage. And your car will not be subject to corrosion due to sudden temperature changes.

By following the guide below, you will be able to make metal swing gates with your own hands. But for this it is important to closely adhere to the drawing/diagram of the design you have chosen. If it is difficult for you to design your own drawing of swing gates, then at the end of the article you will find many diagrams that you can use as a basis. The basis of the gate will be a metal frame, the fastening of which is carried out in the entrance opening. If you decide to make a gate in your yard, then you can immediately design a gate with a built-in gate. But to do this, you will need to install strong pillars that will support the weight of additional sashes. You also need to install supports, for this you will need:

  • building level and tape measure;
  • metal pipe 3 pcs. Ø 100 mm;
  • shovel;
  • facing brick (in case the supports will be covered);
  • cement, sand, crushed stone and water;
  • plumb line

Installation of supports

The work on making supports looks like this:

  1. Measure the entrance opening between the edges of the fence.
  2. Place marks for installing pillars.
  3. In the chosen location, dig a hole to install the support post.
  4. The thickness of the support pipes is selected based on the weight of the swing gates.
  5. After installing the pillars in the hole, adjust them to the level. But first fill the bottom of the hole with crushed stone.
  6. The installed pillars should be filled with prepared concrete.
  7. In order for the pillars to initially stand securely, they should be lined with bricks in the hole itself, and at the same time adjust the vertical level.
  8. So, the installation and concreting of the support pillars has been completed.

If the gate is 2 m high, then the depth of the pit should be about 1 m, and the diameter should be 100 mm wider than the diameter of the pipe.

Now is the time to start making the gate frame. To do this you will need:

  • metal sheet, 2–3 mm thick;
  • metal profile, angle and pipe;
  • measuring instruments (level, tape measure);
  • metal loops;
  • welding machine.

If you are making swing gates for a garage, then first of all you need to make a frame and install it in the opening. It is made from a metal corner of a rectangular or square shape, depending on the garage opening.

As for making a frame for a garage, it is better to make them in duplicate. Secure one on the outside of the opening, and the second on the inside. They are connected to each other by metal strips and welding.

The manufacturing process for gate leaves is as follows:

  1. Place corners or a profile pipe on a flat surface and weld the shape of the sash according to the drawing.
  2. To increase the strength of the structure, strengthen the resulting sashes with diagonal beams.
  3. When the frame is ready, you can sheathe it.
  4. To cover the gate, use a sheet of metal 2 mm thick. It is not recommended to take sheets that are too thick, because in this case it will be necessary to strengthen the support posts.
  5. Next you need to install the hinges. Weld one half of the hinge in the right place on the gate frame, and the other on the support post.
  6. Finally, all that remains is to install a mortise lock and a gate, made according to the same principle as the main frame.
  7. Painting of swing gates is carried out on the ground or already in a suspended position. There isn't much difference. The only thing worth considering is that painting in a suspended state can cause the formation of drips and sagging. Therefore, be careful when performing this work process.

Every person has a desire for comfort. And this even applies to the use of gates. Modern technologies have made it possible to automate the process of opening swing gates. And there are many advantages to this. For example, when you are in a hurry, you should not waste time getting out of the car to open/close the shutters. If it's raining outside, you can avoid getting wet by going outside again. Reflecting on these positive aspects, we invite you to consider the manufacturing technology and some features of automatic gates.

First, let's highlight some of the features of such a structure:

  • Strength.
  • Versatility.
  • Long service life.
  • The mechanism is unpretentious and simple.
  • The opening/closing speed is around 15 s.

For the sake of objectivity, consider the disadvantages:

  • If there is an obstacle in the way while opening/closing the gate leaves, this will disable the automation and the leaves will jam.
  • It is necessary to regularly check the gate opening path, otherwise breakdown is inevitable.

In addition, it is worth highlighting the frequent breakdowns of automation. Although manufacturers claim that this or that mechanism is extremely reliable, nothing lasts forever. However, by carrying out preventive maintenance, any troubles can be avoided.

If during operation the automation stops working, then you should not forcefully close the gate. It may be necessary to reverse the process from opening to closing. When pressed again, the mechanism can start working.

Although this does not solve the problem in all cases. Often you have to turn to specialists to repair automation. Considering all this, do not be afraid of this design. As they say: “If you are afraid of the wolf, do not go into the forest.” You shouldn't give up the benefits of comfort.

It’s worth noting right away that the installation procedure for automatic gates is quite labor-intensive. This requires some qualifications, accuracy and precision. Therefore, if you doubt your abilities, it is better to choose a company that will do everything efficiently and quickly. If you have experience in such work, then following the guide, you will be able to achieve your intended goal.

The manufacturing process of swing gates was described above. Therefore, we will pay special attention to automation, which is equipped in accordance with certain standards.

So, when installing automation, the following indicators must be taken into account:

  • the position of the valves relative to the support column;
  • if automation is used without the use of limit switches, then a sash stop is used.

Without taking these important factors into account, the automation will fail, which will lead to rupture of the bracket, breakdown of the electric motor and other unpleasant consequences.

If you really want to, you can make an automatic gate opener yourself. Especially for amateurs, this business will become a real hobby. This is especially true for those people who want to save money.

In any case, the basis of such a drive will be the mechanism that is installed on the gate from the satellite dish. It, in turn, is equipped with a worm gear. As a result, this will completely replace the conventional electric drive.

The satellite television system in its design has a rotating mechanism (this applies to old-type systems). This mechanism is an electric motor that can be used for installation on swing gates. As for the worm gear, its operating principle is similar to the drive. But as for the first option (worm gear), it is more profitable, since a voltage of 36V is sufficient for its operation; conventional magazine drives require a voltage of 220V.

Speaking from the safety point of view, the use of such a step-down transformer plan is more profitable. Moreover, if the voltage increases, then the opening/closing of the gate leaves increases. However, with prolonged increased voltage, the mechanism may fail.

So, to assemble homemade automation, take 2 drives from a satellite dish in working condition. Give preference to those that have long stems.

This mechanism can be purchased at a relatively low price from a specialized company. Plus, you will need to buy a remote control and a transformer with a power of 36–40V.

The remote control will act as a signal to the electric drive to open/close the gate through the leaf. This system can also be installed on garage doors. The remote control range can reach up to 50 m. The entire drive is assembled within 6 hours. To ensure that all automation works properly, supplement it with a current relay. It will prevent possible damage in case a stone or other object gets under the gate leaf. Automation will return the doors back. If the relay is missing, then after several times the motor may burn out and the door leaf may become unusable.

This is how you can make your own automation for swing gates. If you do not have the opportunity and desire to do all this, then you can buy a ready-made mechanism.

First of all, you should consider the method of opening swing gates. For example, the doors can open inward or outward. Based on this, you should select the appropriate automation. Immediately before installation, prepare the following material and tools:

  • hammer;
  • insulating tape;
  • roulette;
  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • drill.

An appropriate electric drive is also selected. It comes in two types:

  1. Linear.
  2. Lever.

How to determine which one you need? If the internal distance between the support pillars is up to 1.5 m, then a linear one is required. In this case, the automation will not have levers and, accordingly, will take up less space on the gate. If the distance is more than 1.5 m and reaches up to 3 m, then you should purchase a lever mechanism. This drive is also unpretentious and is simply designed for heavy loads. Among other things, you should select the necessary components. To do this, it is necessary to take into account the wind load.

During installation, make sure that the doors open freely. It is very important to monitor this, since after installing the electric drive it may be too late to configure anything.

If you find that the movement of the valves is difficult, then identify the problem and fix it immediately. One of the possible problems is the movement of the shutters out of level. The reason for this is the tilted support column. As a result, this negatively affects automation. When all the shortcomings have been eliminated, you can begin installing automation on the gate.

If you bought the gate automation in a store, then closely follow the manufacturer’s instructions when installing it. In this case, it will work properly for a long time.

It is believed that opening the gate into the yard is a standard scheme. Therefore, any drive will be suitable for this project. So, if the support pillars are made of steel, then it is preferable to use a linear drive. It’s a completely different matter if you have brick supports and swing gates are located in the center of the column. In this case, a linear actuator is not suitable. You will have to install and buy a lever electric drive. The automation itself is mounted on poles, and the levers will allow you to open swing gates, even if the distance from the pole to the gate is 200 mm.

If we compare them with each other, then both linear and lever ones are suitable for opening gates from the outside. But based on the price, preference, of course, falls on a linear electric drive. The only thing to consider is the method of attaching the drive to the pole when opening from the outside.

In most cases, the drive is attached to a brick, which can quickly crumble. It is worse if the drive is mounted to an almost destroyed pole. Under such conditions, the automation will disappear along with part of the pole.

Taking this into account, such a pillar requires additional reinforcement. For example, you can weld a metal frame around it. Next, the outward opening drive is set to manual mode, and the mounting brackets are attached to the gate by welding. If you are using a linear drive, then after welding, open the gate completely and leave free movement up to 1 m. After this, check the movement of the leaf and the correct operation of the drive. If everything works properly, then you can connect the automation and connect the engine.

All automation and remote control are configured according to the attached instructions. If one of the doors opens in the wrong direction, then just move the wire in the connection. But if you follow the connection diagram, then no problems should arise.

So, it is important to make the right choice of the necessary automation, taking into account which direction the swing gates will open. From this article you learned that it is possible to make automation yourself. An easier option is to purchase a ready-made kit. But one thing is certain, regardless of the choice you make, having automatic gates will make your life easier. Therefore, when building a gate in a country house, think about what method of opening it will be - automatic or manual. If you have your own experience in installing automatic gates, then write comments on this article.

The photographs show possible options for swing gates:

Schemes and drawings

The diagrams will help you design your own model of swing gates:

The arrangement of any territory requires the presence of a boundary fence. A mandatory attribute of such a design is a gate to ensure unimpeded entry into the facility. Such systems are used both in industrial enterprises and in private areas. Products of this type can vary in complexity and design. Preliminary preparation will allow you to choose the best product option, taking into account all the nuances.

Peculiarities

Gates are universal enclosing structures that are installed at the entrance to a specific facility or private territory. Today there are many varieties of such structures, which allows you to select them depending on their purpose.

Regardless of what type of gate is being considered, the product consists of several basic elements:

  • Canvas. This part is the main part of the entire system. Depending on the design, there may be several canvases. Some models may have a complex geometric shape, given to create a unique design.
  • Supports. These products take the main load created by the sash or leaf. The shape and technical features depend on the method of fastening the gate.

The gates have several distinctive features:

  • Simplicity. The manufacture of some modifications does not require knowledge and experience in working with different materials.
  • Durability. High-quality products can last up to 15-20 years with proper care.
  • Ease of control. Today, all types of gates are supplemented with special hinges, rollers and other systems that simplify opening the doors.
  • Variety of designs. Products are manufactured using various materials and approaches. This allows you to obtain not only durable, but also beautiful products.

Kinds

Gates are an integral element of many enterprises and private estates. These designs must solve several universal problems. Today you can build them yourself, using special drawings or sketches. Depending on the technical parameters, gate systems can be divided into several types.

Recoil

The leaf of such a gate moves parallel to the fence or one of the walls. The main components of the products are the canvas, cantilever beam, rollers and supports. The fastening scheme of these attributes depends only on the selected type of sash and its location.

The frame is shifted by means of a cantilever beam and rollers.

The most popular type is cantilever gates, but there are also hanging and rail systems. The latter, for example, are very similar to console ones, but movement is carried out on a special rail. There are also so-called folding gates. In them, the sash seems to enter into itself. This is achieved by using metal profiles of various thicknesses and its fastening. Sliding gates are universal, as they can be installed both at the dacha and at an industrial facility.

Among the disadvantages are the need for free space on one side, as well as the high cost of the product.

Swing

This type of gate consists of one or two leaves that open in an arc. The use of swing systems today is very diverse. They are used both in private households and in large agricultural enterprises where additional fencing for areas is needed. The construction of these gates is one of the simplest, which has led to their widespread use. To install them, you will need metal and welding, with which the frame of the door is welded, and then the gate is installed in the right place. Today swing gates are used as entrance gates.

Rolled

A feature of such designs is that the fabric is wound on a special shaft when moving upward. This was made possible by dividing the canvas into small sections that are interconnected. Theoretically, roller gates can be installed outdoors as fencing systems, but this process is quite labor-intensive, so they are installed in garages or warehouses, where the frame can be attached to the base of the building. Among the disadvantages of these structures is their low strength.

There are varieties in which the canvas is not rolled into a roll, but folded into an accordion, but they are used quite rarely, since they are not so practical.

Sectional

Gates of this type consist of a large leaf of several sections, which moves along special guides. Similar systems are used in the construction of large warehouses, garages and other industrial facilities. To increase thermal insulation, insulation is inserted inside the canvas. The gate lifts up, so no additional space is required near the base. Some modifications can be supplemented with windows and gates.

Among the disadvantages are the high cost and limited use (installation is carried out only on solid foundations).

Tilt&Turn

Materials

Theoretically, gates can be made from almost any material. Today, several types are used for such purposes:

  • Metal sheets. Often, for such purposes, a profiled sheet is used, which is selected according to thickness and color. The canvas itself is formed from it. Please note that iron sheets not only cover the frame, but also form the top layer of the roll mechanisms. To protect the metal, the surface is coated with PVC solutions.
  • Pipes. Both round and profile products are used. Homemade gates are often made from a profile: you just need to weld the blanks correctly.
  • Metal corners. They are necessary to create or strengthen the frame. This material is not used for heavy gates.
  • Wood. This material is the most affordable and widespread, but wooden gates are becoming increasingly rare today, as they are quite demanding on climatic conditions.
  • Metal rods. Decorative elements are made from them. They are the basis of forged gates, which are distinguished by their originality and beauty.

How to make it yourself

Gates can differ radically from each other in design and technical parameters. The construction of some modifications is technically impossible at home. These include hanging or roll varieties.

Before you start building a gate in a private house, you should take into account several recommendations and proceed in stages.

  • Decide on the type of structure you plan to build. Today, many people prefer sliding systems, but they require free space along the fence. This must be taken into account when planning. At this stage, it is advisable to take all measurements in order to have data from which the main parameters of the canvas will be calculated.
  • Calculate all the parameters of the canvas and the wicket (if there is one). To do this, it is better to make a small drawing on which all the main dimensions of the future sash should be plotted. Particular attention should be paid to cantilever and fan systems: for them, accuracy is most important.
  • Stock up on tools. The construction of some types of gates requires not only a hammer and welding, but also other auxiliary tools: circular saws, grinders and many others.
  • Before starting work, buy building materials in the required amount: plastic pipes, corrugated pipes, rollers, loops and the like. The required set is determined by what kind of gate you are going to build.

Installation of supports

Technically, supports can be called elements of the system that hold the canvas in a certain position. These structures take the main load, so they are built from durable materials. The simplest option is to install fence posts for swing systems.

It consists of several sequential steps:

  • Initially, they determine the location. Often, for double-leaf gates, the support posts are placed at a distance equal to twice the width of one leaf plus a small margin. It is also important to consider the direction of movement of the web. If it opens into the yard, then you need to leave room for plowing.
  • Concreting pillars. Concrete structures, wooden beams or metal channels of varying thickness are used as supports. They are selected depending on the weight of the gate. When concreting, it is important to deepen the pillars by no less than 50 cm. It is advisable to position them strictly vertically, since any displacement can affect the ability to close the doors.
  • When the concrete is poured and the pillars are aligned, you need to install a brace so that the pillars do not change position while the solution hardens.

Installing a support system for sliding panel gates is a more complex process.

It can be described in several points:

  • Digging a ditch for the lower support beam. It will take the main load from the departure track. The ditch is located along the opening, and its length often does not exceed half its width. The depth of the pit reaches 1-1.5 m.
  • Beam construction. This structure consists of a steel channel and metal supports that are welded to it. As a result, the entire structure resembles the letter “P”. The channel is installed with the legs down, its flat side should be flush with the ground.
  • Concreting. When everything is ready, the ditch with the support beam is poured with concrete. It is important to control that the elements do not move in space. The beam must be in a horizontal plane. If this condition is not observed, then the movement of the exit track on the rollers will be complicated.
  • When the support beam has frozen, they begin to form the side support pillars. They are needed to optimize the operation of the folding structure. Closers, support rollers, motion sensors and other auxiliary attributes are mounted on them. Many experts recommend making decorative fence posts first, and then attaching the remaining parts to them.

As for armored gates or structures made of sandwich panels, they are not installed on the street. These systems are attached directly to the building frame, which acts as supports.

Some modifications are equipped with a metal frame that is easy to attach at the factory.

Installation

Before you begin installing the gates, they should be assembled. Swing and sliding systems are considered the easiest to assemble. The technology of construction and installation of swing-type structures should be considered.

It can be divided into several stages:

  • Frame installation. The sash can be made of either wood or metal. The latter option is preferable, since the metal is stronger and more durable. Initially, profile pipes are cut into blanks, which, when folded, should form a rectangle. The corners of the elements are connected to each other by welding. To strengthen the product, metal corners are welded at the joints, adding rigidity.
  • Sheathing. When the frame is ready, it is sheathed with profiled sheets, wood or chain-link mesh. If you want to get a beautiful and unusual design, then you can use forging elements as decoration. They require experience working with metal, because it needs to be bent into a certain shape. If you do not have experience, you can purchase ready-made options.
  • Fastening. Hinged hinges are welded to the finished canvases and support posts. It is advisable to do this before laying the stone, so that both halves of the loops can be aligned perfectly evenly. If the hinges are welded correctly, then you can simply “put” the sash on the support pin. At the very end, locks and a gate are installed.

Installing sliding gates is much more difficult. It involves performing the following operations:

  • Construction of a metal frame. It is made from durable, thick profile pipe. The length of the canvas is often about 50% greater than the width of the opening. This is necessary to create a kind of counterbalance. If the width of the canvas is small, you don’t need to make a counterweight. The technology also involves cutting metal into blanks and then welding them at the corners, which need to be given special attention. Vertical supports should be welded along the entire length of the frame, to which the sheathing will then be attached.
  • Installation of the support beam. Outwardly, it resembles a profile pipe with a longitudinal section. The length of the beam is equal to the width of the lower end of the gate. It is attached to it using spot welding.
  • Sheathing. Sheets of profiled steel are placed on top of the frame. They are attached using special self-tapping screws that are not afraid of moisture and do not damage the metal.

  • Installation of rollers and top guide. Support rollers are attached to a metal platform. It is advisable to fix it by welding on a channel, which acts as a base. The rollers are securely screwed with ordinary bolts. The top guide is a small bar that moves along the rolls. The rolls, in turn, are attached to the support pillars. They do not allow the canvas to move to the sides when moving. The procedure is completed by installing removable polypropylene plugs, which are attached to the ends of the pipes, preventing moisture or dirt from entering them.
  • Gate installation. When all systems are secured, the canvas should be put on the rollers and tested. It is advisable to perform all operations with at least two people, since the gates are quite bulky and heavy.

Automation

The frame of many gates is made of metal, which increases its weight. Opening such systems manually is not always comfortable. This problem is solved with the help of automatic drives. It is impossible to make them yourself, since this requires special equipment. They install automation on roller shutters, sliding and swing gates. This process can be broken down into several sequential steps:

  • drive mount. It is a motor with gears that drive the entire system. They are located inside a special housing, which allows them to be protected from external factors. At this stage, the device is adjusted relative to the blade so that the rail moves without load.
  • Rail fastening. It is fixed on the canvas so that it coincides with the internal gear. It is important to take the product in length with a small margin. When fastening the gate must be completely closed.
  • Setup. In order for the motor to move the sliding gate, the teeth on the gear and rack must match. They are combined using special methods, which you can ask experienced craftsmen about.
  • Connection. The motor is connected to the electrical network of the house, and sensors are used to open the gate using a phone or a regular button.

Making a gate yourself is much easier than it seems at first glance. To do this, you only need basic metal working tools and a welding machine. Let's talk in detail about materials and manufacturing technology.

The project is the head of everything

The manufacture of gates should begin with the preparation of the project, i.e. a drawing showing all the features and dimensions of the future structure. Therefore, before compiling it, you need to decide on the following nuances of the product:

  • type of construction - most often the gates are made swinging or sliding;
  • design - largely depends on the design and materials;
  • size – selected taking into account individual requirements;
  • the location of the gate - it can be built into the gate or in the form of a door on a separate stand.

When you have a clear idea of the future gate, draw it on paper. The basic structural elements are always the same - a frame is used, which is a frame reinforced with jumpers and struts. The frame is usually covered with sheet material. For these purposes, sheet steel or corrugated sheets are usually used.

The supporting function is performed by racks or pillars. Most often, profiled pipes are used as the latter, which are dug into the ground and concreted. Sometimes they use concrete pillars or build them from brick. The gate leaves are attached to them using awnings.

If you do not have a welding machine or experience working with metal, you can make similar gates from wood. They have the same frame, but made of timber. They can be sheathed with the same corrugated sheet or boards.

When drawing up drawings, you can take the projects we propose as a basis, adjusting their dimensions.

Double-leaf structure made of corrugated sheets - a classic of the genre

As an example, let's look at how to make swing gates from corrugated sheets. To make them you will need the following materials:

  • wall corrugated sheeting (can be replaced with steel sheets);
  • profiled pipe with a cross section of 20x40 mm;
  • profiled pipes 80x100 with a wall thickness of 7 mm (can be replaced with a channel beam);
  • cement, sand and crushed stone for pouring concrete;
  • gate hinges;
  • rod with a diameter of 15-20 mm.

You can calculate the required amount of materials using the existing design diagram. When everything you need has been purchased, you can begin making the frame of the doors. To do this, you must first cut the 20x40 profile to get 2 segments equal to the width of the sash, and 2 segments equal to its height.

Weld a rectangular frame from these sections. When joining pipes, be sure to use a square so that the frame angles correspond to 90 degrees. Then you need to fill in, i.e. weld several horizontal jumpers. You can install one horizontal jumper, which divides the sash in half, and then weld struts to the upper and lower halves of the sash, as shown in the project proposed above. Sometimes horizontal jumpers are abandoned in favor of two intersecting struts.

The frame of the second leaf and gate is made in the same way. If the gate is built into the sash, filling is done a little differently - as a rule, the wicket occupies half of the sash, so secure a vertical post in the center of the frame. Now that the gate opening is demarcated, fill the sash according to the described scheme.

It must be said that gates made of corrugated sheets do not have to be made exclusively in a rectangular shape. If you want the design to be more original and attractive, the upper crossbars can be made curved, for example, in an arched shape. True, to bend the profile you will need a powerful pipe bender.

Immediately make stoppers that will allow you to block the gate from the inside. They are L-shaped vertical bolts that are located at the bottom of the frame. The stoppers pass through the hole in the lower profile of the frame and enter reinforced holes in the ground about 5 centimeters. To prevent the bolts from falling out when lifted, weld the stoppers in the form of strips. In addition, attach strips that will allow the stoppers to be secured when raised.

Additionally, a horizontal bolt can be made from a metal plate between the doors. To do this, weld several loops made of a metal rod to the crossbar, in which the bolt plate will move. In addition, make holes of the required size in the frame posts.

An even more reliable option for constipation is a lock. To weld it, you need to make a landing platform from metal plates. Its dimensions depend on the size and type of lock being installed.

Now that the frame is ready, you can install the support pillars. To do this, first make a marking - draw a line on which the gate will be installed. Then, on the line, mark the locations of the racks, according to the project.

Then dig holes to a depth of about 30% of the height of the racks. Make the diameter of the holes 30-40 centimeters. Cover the bottom of the holes with a layer of sand and crushed stone 15 cm thick. Before installing the supports, weld a couple of jumpers from a corner or profile pipe to their lower part. They will provide more reliable fixation of the pillars.

The height of the pillars above the ground level should be slightly greater than the height of the gate so that a gap of about 25 cm can be provided between the doors and the soil.

Then lower the pillars into the holes, fix them in a vertical position and fill them with concrete. After this, you need to stop work until the concrete gains strength. If the area under the gate will not be filled with concrete, a metal corner should be placed under the gate and welded to the posts.

Now you can install the frame on the racks. To do this, we apply markings on the sashes so that the hinges are located on the same line, and then weld them to the frame. The supports are marked in the same way and then the second half of the hinges are welded to them. After this, the sash frames are installed in the working position - to do this, put the sash hinges on the frame hinges. If the hinges are not removable, the frames must be fixed in working position along with the hinges, aligned with the markings, and then welded to the racks.

Once the frames are installed, the sheathing can be done. Cut the corrugated sheets according to the design and secure them to the frame with bolts and nuts. Pre-drill holes for them along the perimeter of the frame in increments of 150 mm. In the center of the web, the bolt spacing can be increased.

You can decorate the gate with forged elements. They are purchased in specialized stores and welded to the casing or on top of the frame.

If the area under the gate will be filled with concrete, lay two pipes with an internal diameter slightly larger than the stoppers above the stoppers. Otherwise, drill holes for stoppers in the corner (threshold).

Sliding gate with drive – sim-sim, open

Sliding (cantilever) gates with a drive are becoming increasingly popular, as they are the most convenient to use. Special automation allows you to control them even using a remote control.

Like swing gates, sliding gates have a frame at their base, which can be covered with the same corrugated sheet or other sheet material. The only thing is that they are one large sash with a counterweight that moves to the side. The load-bearing element is a horizontal beam to which the canvas is attached.

Depending on the location of the beam, sliding gates are divided into three types:

  • with a lower location - the beam is installed a few centimeters from the ground;
  • with a middle location - the beam divides the sash in half;
  • with a top location - the beam is located above the gate.

Another feature of this design is that the pillars that form the entrance, i.e. located to the left and right of the sash, they practically do not bear the load from the leaf.

One end of the beam hangs freely, as a result of which the structure is called cantilever. The other end, above which the counterweight is located, lies on two supports with rollers (cantilever blocks). A supporting bracket is installed on one of the pillars, which serves as a guide.

  • pipes 60x40 and 40x20 mm;
  • reinforcement 12 mm;
  • concrete.

It must be said that it will not be possible to make cantilever gates entirely with your own hands. Therefore, you will have to purchase a drive kit that includes:

  • electric motor;
  • electronics;
  • plates with rollers;
  • two catchers.

In addition, you will need a special beam, inside which the rollers will ride. The beam has a U-shaped profile with edges curved inward, which allows the rollers to fix the structure.

Start your work by making a frame from a 60x40 mm pipe. In our case, the gate size is 4x1.9 m plus a 2 m counterweight, i.e. the frame will have a size of 6x1.9 m. Separate the canvas from the counterweight with a vertical stand made of a 60x40 mm pipe. Then fill as shown in the diagram using a 40x20 mm pipe. After this, weld the beam with the back facing up to the bottom of the frame, as shown above.

Now you need to pour the foundation along the length of the counterweight. It is performed according to the principle of a conventional strip foundation - dig a trench 2 m long and 40 cm wide below the freezing level of the soil. The bottom should be filled with sand and crushed stone. Be sure to install embedded parts in the trench (2-3 racks made of 80x60 mm pipe) and weld a 20 cm wide channel to them with the back facing up. The latter will serve as a platform for supports. Tie the embedded parts together with several reinforcement belts, then fill the foundation with concrete to the level of the channel.

After the concrete has hardened, a pair of plates with a thickness of at least 5–7 mm must be welded to the channel. The distance between the plates should be approximately one and a half meters. Weld threaded studs to the plates, having first marked the location of the mounting holes in the carriages with rollers. Place the brackets on the prepared areas and tighten them with nuts that screw onto the studs.

Now install the frame into working position - simply roll the beam onto the rollers. Immediately install catchers that prevent the structure from dangling in the closed position in strong winds. To install them, in the closed position of the sash, mark the location of the “traps” on the pole. If the posts are brick or concrete, secure the catchers to them with dowels. If the racks are metal, then installation can be done by welding.

Attach a support bracket with rollers to the second post located on the counterweight side. It is also advisable to weld two posts to the channel from the fence side and attach additional upper rollers to each of them. They are a U-shaped part, on each “leg” of which a roller is attached. As a result, the top bar of the frame simply rolls between the rollers when the sash moves.

On the catcher side, you can install a bolt or lock that will block the door. It must be positioned so that the tongue moves not horizontally, but vertically. On the post, attach a counter plate with a hole in which there will be a bolt or lock tongue.

To do this, weld plugs to the edges of the beam. In addition, at the end of the counterweight you need to attach a ring to which the cable or drive chain will cling. A similar ring must be welded on the opposite side of the beam. Both rings should be at the same level.

Opposite the lower catcher, a thrust wheel is attached to the beam. When the sash closes, it runs over the catcher and slightly lifts the sash. This allows you to slightly relieve the load from the rollers and transfer it to the pole.

At this point the work is almost completed. All that remains is to cover the frame with corrugated sheeting and install the gate opening mechanism, as well as connect the electronics. As a rule, the engine is installed on the counterweight side. The sash is moved using a gear and chain. The drive electronics are placed in a separate unit, which is connected to the electric motor.

It must be said that each drive model may have its own connection nuances, so this process is usually described in detail in the instructions included in the kit.

Buy a power unit with a power reserve, since in winter the load on it will increase greatly .

After installing the drive, your gate will open at the touch of a button.

Swing gates - not a single rural yard in Russia, not a single country house, can do without them. It doesn’t matter what their design is: solid metal or wood, openwork forging or simple welding of rods, angles, pipes.

You can make it yourself

Their design is the simplest of all known: sliding, lifting, single or double leaf. They let in and out the owners’ car, a cargo scooter “Ant” or a walk-behind tractor with a trailer. They can be equipped with a yellow signal light or an antenna for remote control of the “close-open” mechanism. With a gate for adults and children in one part of the plow or separately next to it.

For those who have not yet had similar ones, read our recommendations for creating entry barriers, look at photos of gate drawings, collect the necessary tools, purchase materials and start working on your own.

And if you decide to build a garage in the yard, then the experience gained from assembling a plow on the estate will also be suitable for installing the entrance to it.

You can also download a drawing of a garage door on the website. The design of these gates is simple and clear, installation is simple, easy to open/close, and reliable.

Device principle

The design of such fences has remained unchanged for centuries. Only the materials for plowing are changed. To the traditional options (made of simple metal or wood), elegant profiles and polycarbonate are added.

The advantages of plowing are:

  • ease of assembly and installation
  • minimum cost when assembling with your own hands
  • durability
  • ease of maintenance
  • Suitable for office areas, technical complexes, garage cooperatives
  • Variation in sash widths up to fifteen meters

Let's pay attention to installation

The gates are mounted on side posts made of pipes with a diameter of 10 cm, a welded pair of corners or ready-made profiles. They are concreted to a depth of at least a meter so that the frost does not “drive” the gates.

The height is enough to be two meters, the same width of each door. They swing open either immediately or separately each, into the yard or out. This needs to be thought through right away. They are hung on hinges that are well lubricated with a graphite mixture so that they do not creak.

When closed, if there is no opening mechanism, they are fixed in several ways. Either transversely with an inch pipe mounted on a pair of hooks for each plow, or with fasteners at the junction of the mortars, mounted in the concrete. The lower fastening will also be needed in the case of simply fixing each plow.

The cladding, painted corrugated sheeting or polycarbonate, is attached to the frames with bolts or self-tapping screws. The last hardware per square meter of fastening is needed eight to ten pieces.

You leave the last material in its translucency or paint it with a color of your choice. The corrugated sheeting, which continues in the form of a fence from the gate along the entire length of the front part of the estate, looks good.

The disadvantage of the goal format is its large turn. This is a particular drawback for winters, when a lot of snow must be cleared in order to open the gate.

Mechanization

This convenience will have to be purchased as a finished product, but it will take a long time to make it yourself. The mechanism is similar to a door closer in entrances, only much more massive and powerful.

You can install it closer to the ground if winters have little snow, or better in the middle of each side of the gate. For the middle, less bulky door closers are sold.

In both cases, it is necessary to weld the structures to the fasteners of the plows. Our descriptions are minimal; you can see all the procedures in detail on the video of the gate drawings.

Alternative to swing gates

If swing gates do not suit you due to the opening area of the gate, look at possible drawings of sliding gates. Perhaps build them yourself. Only such gates will become twice as heavy. Because instead of the area of two swing doors, here they will be welded together. A cone will also be added at one end of this design.

It is necessary to completely cover the entry space. Therefore, moving such gates along the same line along the fence manually is problematic.

Therefore, a mechanism is needed in the form of a gearbox or worm gear on the teeth of the slide. For winter use, it is necessary to consider protection from snow and rain.

Their length for a standard estate gate is four meters. The driving angle adds at least another 1.6 meters. The fastening is radically different from swing ones.

Along the length of the gate, a profile-slide is installed at the bottom to move the structure along it. On both sides of them there are rectangles embedded in concrete with a height slightly higher than the gate with a distance between the verticals of 10-15 cm. The frame moves through them, and when closed they hold it. On one side, you concrete the platform for two meters, and on it you strengthen the continuation of the profile and the entire movement mechanism.

You can also download a drawing of a garage door on the website. Below we will talk about one garage structure.

Overhead garage doors

There are two more types of gates - overhead and garage. The lifts themselves are mounted in a detached garage or built into a building. They are not suitable for open air, since they have a complex design for the street. When rising, it will create windage in the wind, which will lead to deformation of the frame.

A drawing of a lift gate for an integral garage shows that it can be opened in winter even if there is a snowdrift in front of the engine room.

The entrance leaf simply goes up along the lower slide, and the two upper wheels along the same guides lead the structure almost horizontally.

If the gate is made not of too thick metal, but of a profile, then you can raise and lower it manually. Provide a soft seal along the contour of the gate against wind, snow, and rain.
