When choosing a sofa for their apartment, people often face the problem of the lack of models with a color or finish that suits their interior, or the required dimensions. One solution to this problem is to make a sofa with your own hands. With this approach, it becomes possible to fully realize your imagination and creative inclinations. In this article, we'll take a look at how you can make a simple sofa out of pallets and wood planks for your kitchen, balcony, or even living room.

How to make a sofa with your own hands at home

Stylish and modern furniture does not have to cost a lot of money and be made from expensive materials. For a real owner who has the necessary set of tools and skills to work with it, it will not be difficult to create a sofa with your own hands at home. This guarantees the quality of the assembly and the materials used in the work, and will also save a significant amount of money on buying new furniture in the store. Even made from old pallets or ordinary pine boards, this main element of any interior will attract the eye and delight the owners for many years.

So, what do we need to make a sofa? Let's look at the lists of the necessary tools and materials.

Required tools:

  • Electric jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • Screwdriver or screwdriver;
  • Roulette;
  • Stationery knife for cutting foam rubber;
  • Fabric scissors;
  • Stapler for attaching upholstery elements.

At the initial stage of work, it is necessary to make a drawing or sketch of the sofa, clearly determine the layout and overall dimensions. After creating the drawing, the required amount of materials is calculated.

Materials to be used:

  • Bar with a section of 50 × 50 mm;
  • Any sheet material;
  • Furniture foam rubber;
  • Furniture synthetic winterizer for the back;
  • Upholstery fabric;
  • Thread for connecting fabric;
  • Joiner's glue;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • Pencil.

When making a sofa with your own hands, you can also use any suitable materials that are left after the repair or construction of the cottage. It can be boards, timber, plywood or MDF sheets, necessary to give additional rigidity to the structure. Missing material must be purchased.

How to make a sofa: step 1. Making a frame with your own hands

The basis of any sofa or bed is a frame that bears all the load. In order for the furniture to serve for a long time, you need to responsibly take its assembly. The frame of the sofa is made of durable boards (ideally solid wood, or high-quality and thick plywood), which are fastened with self-tapping screws. To give additional strength, you can use metal corners and carpentry glue, which are smeared with the joints of the wooden parts of the frame. After creating a wooden frame, it is sheathed with sheet material. Those parts of the frame that will not be sheathed with fabric should be treated with sandpaper and covered with stain, paint or furniture varnish.

How to make a sofa: step 2. Create a comfortable back

When you create a sofa with your own hands for a kitchen or a balcony, you can get by with sewing thick pillows under your back. A distinctive feature of the sofas in the living room is the obligatory presence of a back, which allows you to comfortably spend your free hours on the sofa.

Depending on the chosen design of the sofa, you need to decide on a comfortable angle of inclination of the back, and then firmly fix it. An interesting idea for creating a sofa back is presented to you in the following photo.

Step 3: upholstery, seats and sofa cushions

When making a sofa with your own hands, the easiest solution is to buy ready-made seats of the right size. But if you have a desire and a sewing machine, it will be easy to sew them yourself. For the seats, it is necessary to cut out pieces of the appropriate size from the foam rubber, wrap them in a soft material like synthetic winterizer, and then sheathe them with the purchased fabric. An excellent solution would be to sew zippers into the pillows, which will allow you to conveniently remove the covers for washing in the future.

A more difficult undertaking will be the creation of a full-fledged upholstery. You can find step-by-step instructions with photos in our article. Restoration of upholstered furniture: upholstery or upholstery replacement.

Creating a sofa with your own hands is a great opportunity to show your skills as a craftsman and create a stylish piece of furniture. We invite you to enjoy photos of homemade sofas from different materials for inspiration.

The original sofa from pallets do it yourself

One of the most popular ideas for today is to create a sofa from pallets with your own hands. These pallets are also called pallets. They are inexpensive and easy to get at any hardware store. Pallets consist of several boards, which are very conveniently disassembled and then can be reassembled into any design convenient for you. It remains only to paint them in the desired color and make sofa cushions. Examples of homemade sofas from pallets, see the photo below:

Important: if you decide to make a sofa out of pallets, then when buying them, you need to pay attention to the condition of the wood - there should be no damage on it, obvious signs of dryness and old age. In any case, to create a high-quality sofa with your own hands, pallets should be sanded and a protective coating should be applied, for example, using a special impregnation for wood or varnish. Euro pallets have standard dimensions of 800×1200 mm, so you can easily calculate the required frame size.

How to make a corner sofa in the kitchen

The bottom and side walls of the box will provide strength and additional stability to the structure.

Basic principles for the manufacture of upholstered furniture

The original sofa made of pallets with a soft back do it yourself

When making upholstered furniture with your own hands, you must adhere to some principles:

  • First, the quality of the future design. You yourself choose the material, folding mechanism, accessories, filler, upholstery material, create furniture yourself. Thus, you get reliable upholstered furniture that meets the requirements, which will last for quite a long time without any breakdowns.
  • Secondly, a sofa or other piece of furniture should be impeccable in form, but at the same time simple. This will make the manufacturing work practical, less painstaking, spending a minimum of time and materials, and in the future will greatly simplify the repair and replacement of parts.
  • Thirdly, ergonomic indicators. They determine the ratio of the design to the physical constitution of a person, his weight and general hygiene requirements - convenient and elementary care for furniture.
  • Fourthly, to meet general aesthetic demands - to be not just a comfortable piece of furniture, but to fit harmoniously into the overall environment, to match other furniture, fashion, style.
  • Fifth, meet environmental requirements. In the manufacture of upholstered furniture, materials should be used that do not contain harmful substances or contain their lowest index.

Palette for choosing materials for furniture upholstery

Before you start upholstery furniture, you need to decide on the material - leather or fabric. The choice is also influenced by financial possibilities. You should not choose leatherette - it will not last long. Remember the rules: furniture elements must be covered with fabric before you begin to assemble the building; when cutting, you need to take into account hem allowances (about two centimeters); before you start cutting the material, make blanks.

Drawing chair frameless sofa for self-manufacturing

Having made the necessary measurements, we calculate the required length and width of the material. To make the upholstery last for a long time, choose dense fabrics - chenille, tapestry, jacquard. They are better for the job. We lay out the blanks on the selected material, circle with chalk, not forgetting the allowances, cut out. Thus, we make patterns for the back, armrests, back wall. We sew on a sewing machine and put it on furniture elements, then we assemble the entire structure. Pillows on the sofa are sewn in the same way.

The final stage - decoration

Decorating is one of the best options to give the atmosphere originality, elegance, to update the interior. If you have a desire, imagination, you can easily do this work yourself, without resorting to the help of designers.

Beautiful covers and pillows to decorate a soft corner

Now the decoupage technique has found wide application - using thin napkins, you apply various patterns and patterns to the surface of the furniture.

Replacing the filler and fabric for a chic vintage armchair

If the upholstery is outdated or has fallen into disrepair, you can sew new covers and make decorative pillows. It is necessary to choose the upholstery fabric carefully - it should not shed and smell strongly, and the pile should not crumble. In fact, the choice is not difficult. To make the furniture look spectacular, partner fabrics of a solid color are chosen for upholstery. Armrests and bottom lines are upholstered with them; for other parts, fabric with an image or a different color is used. To reduce fabric consumption, choose a material with a solid color or with a small pattern.

An example of decorating upholstered furniture with covers

Filler plays an important role in decorating upholstered furniture. If it has lost elasticity and sagged, it must be replaced so that the furniture is not only beautiful, but also comfortable. From inexpensive means, foam rubber, batting and synthetic winterizer are used. The last option is the most common, using it as a filler, you will decorate furniture in a short time. A high-quality synthetic winterizer should be of the same thickness, sufficiently dense and odorless. Foam rubber is no less popular, it should have a finely porous structure. If, when pressed, it is instantly restored, then such a filler will last for quite a long time.

If the upholstery on your favorite sofa is worn out or stains appear on it that cannot be removed, but you feel sorry for throwing it away, since the furniture is still strong enough and can last for more than one year, then you can make a constriction by buying another fabric. If this work is difficult for you, but you sew perfectly, then why not make new covers yourself, you can add drapery elements. If they get dirty, they can simply be removed and washed.

When choosing a material, consider the overall situation, the style of the interior and, of course, your taste. It is better if you use fabrics of soft colors and sublime shades for decoration. Accessories must match the color of the material. Decorating furniture with your own hands, you will give it a second life, and the atmosphere in the house will be original and unique.

If the idea of creating a shelf for books, a kitchen stool or a bench for a summer residence comes to mind for every second home craftsman, then not every one of them will dare to swing at the sofa. And in vain. Simple designs of such furniture are quite affordable for self-production. Moreover, this does not require any special skills and special tools. Only time, desire and patience. You don't even need to know how to sew to make covers. Of course, it all depends on the chosen model.

Some, on the contrary, require tailoring skills and do not involve the use of building tools. In a word, anyone can make a sofa in an apartment, a country house or a gazebo. Especially if he has detailed instructions before his eyes.

Don't believe? Then carefully read this article and be sure to watch the video.

Unusual sofas with your own hands

Creative, courageous people who prefer non-standard solutions, before picking up a hammer or jigsaw, should carefully look around. Perhaps their free imagination will tell you how you can use a variety of things and objects as the basis for a designer sofa.

Let's give some examples.

Sofas-transformers without frame

A few thick pieces of square or rectangular foam rubber can be turned into cozy upholstered furniture. To do this, they need to sew covers from a suitable fabric with zippers for easy washing. One part of the resulting soft modules will become the seats, the second - the backs.

If strips of double-sided Velcro are sewn on the sides of such modules, it will be possible to assemble sofas of various configurations from them - straight, angular, U-shaped. Or lay out to create a spacious bed.

Prices for different types of corner modular sofas

Corner modular sofa

We need a sofa higher - we stack the modules on top of each other. I want to retire in an armchair - we tear off one module from the sofa and take it to a quiet corner. In general, there are a lot of options. The only drawback is that it will be possible to lean on the back of such a sofa only if it stands against the wall.

Sofa from construction pallets

Not everyone is comfortable using too low frameless furniture. The option described above can be improved by using ordinary pallets to create the base of the sofa - wooden construction pallets for transporting bricks and other materials.

And here again, you need a little imagination to come up with a convenient design from the available parts. Pallets can be disassembled into separate boards and used, but this is not necessary. It is enough to assemble a sofa frame with a back and armrests from them, fasten all the elements together with nails or self-tapping screws, and then cut out the details from the foam rubber in accordance with the resulting dimensions. As in the previous case, they are covered with fabric. And they are fixed in place either with the same Velcro or rubber bands.

Mini sofa made of chairs

Several chairs fastened together are a ready-made frame for a small sofa that can be placed in the kitchen or on the terrace. Of course, it needs to be refined and decorated, and here, too, you can let your imagination run wild.

Cast iron bath sofa

If you decide to replace an old metal bathtub with a modern acrylic one, do not rush to throw it away. An old bath can also turn into a sofa, and a very unusual one that will surprise all your guests.

Of course, this idea is not suitable for everyone, and for various reasons.

  1. Firstly, the work ahead is long, dusty and rather difficult.
  2. Secondly, furniture with small dimensions will turn out to be very heavy if the bathtub is cast iron, and unusually cold.
  3. And thirdly, such a sofa will not fit into any interior.

Sofa from Breakfast at Tiffany's

If none of the above scares you, let's get started.

  1. After dismantling the bath on one of the walls, we outline a smooth contour of the front of the sofa.

  2. Cut out the excess part with a grinder.

  3. Replacing the cutting wheel with a grinding wheel, using the same grinder, we smooth and level the cut.
  4. We remove the legs and thoroughly clean both them and the bath itself, if necessary using chemicals or a grinding tool. It is necessary to achieve a flat and relatively smooth surface.

    Grinding from the inside. Sanding uneven edges

  5. Then we putty gross defects and cover the bath with a primer.
  6. We paint it in the desired color, applying several layers of paint with drying and grinding each layer.

  7. We install the bathtub on restored and painted legs.
  8. We make a mattress from foam rubber dressed in a cover, sew small pillows under the back - and the sofa is ready.

How to assemble a traditional pull out sofa

In our small apartments, the sofa often functions as a bed, if not for the owners, then for the guests who stayed overnight. Therefore, it should unfold when necessary and fold again for convenience and space saving.

Such furniture is not so easy to perform and requires the installation of special mechanisms, but it can also be done at home.

Material selection

The sofa, if considered in parts, consists of a frame, filler, upholstery and a folding mechanism. Let's figure out what material can be used for each part.

Table. Material options

MaterialDescription
As a rule, they go to the manufacture of the frame, support legs, legs, armrests and other decorative elements. There are also completely wooden frames, especially when it comes to hard sofas in the form of a bench with a back for the street or a gazebo. In upholstered furniture, in which the base is practically invisible under the upholstery, their use is impractical both from a financial point of view and from a practical point of view due to the large weight.
Inexpensive, durable and very easy to use material with low weight. It is lined with frame frames, drawers are made. High quality plywood of good thickness can also be used as face material.

The main advantage is the low price. Disadvantages - instability to moisture, low strength, high weight. Sofas with such a frame are very heavy. If visible structural details are made from chipboard, laminated boards are used - laminated chipboard.
Outwardly, this material is similar to chipboard, but surpasses it in many ways. It is stronger, not afraid of high humidity, does not emit harmful substances, is easily processed, but also costs more. Depending on the exterior finish, it can imitate different types of wood and other natural and artificial materials.

The softness and elasticity of the sofa gives the filler located between the frame and the outer upholstery. Foam rubber, synthetic winterizer, batting, as well as special springs are usually used.

The requirements for upholstery material are simple: it must be durable and wear-resistant. Otherwise, there are no restrictions, you can choose flock, tapestry, artificial or natural leather, etc.

Fasteners may require screws, furniture screws, small nails or staples. As well as special accessories.

Design choice

With the independent manufacture of a sofa for the home and the lack of experience in such work, it is better not to take on complex designs, but to choose something simpler. For example, a folding sofa or an eurobook.

Preparation of materials and tools

To purchase the right amount of materials and decide on their type, you need a drawing of the future sofa with dimensions. In our case we use:

  • pine bars with a section of 40x40 mm;
  • fiberboard sheets;
  • plywood sheets;
  • chipboard panels;
  • boards;

  • dense and thick furniture foam rubber;
  • upholstery fabric;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • furniture legs or wheels;

  • glue for sticking foam rubber on the frame.

The following tool is required for work:

  • jigsaw for cutting blanks;
  • plane;
  • screwdriver;
  • stapler with staples;
  • knife and scissors;
  • tape measure and pencil.

Note. A sewing machine for sewing a cover is a desirable tool, but not required. You can cover the sofa with fabric without it. What is relevant for those who do not know how to sew.

Drawer Assembly

Let's start with a box, the walls of which we will make from chipboard. You will need 4 panels - two short (about 60 cm) for the sidewalls and two long (150-160 cm) for the front and rear walls. The width is selected depending on the desired depth of the box. Optimal 15-25 cm.

Step 1. First, we fasten the legs and the guide from the timber to the sidewalls with screws.

Step 2 Then we assemble the frame of the box, setting all the details on a flat surface and screwing the back and front to the legs. In the middle of the frame, you need to fix the spacer bar.

Step 3 Turning the box upside down, we fasten a short bar under the central strut, to which we subsequently fasten one of the loops. We sew the plywood bottom to the box with small screws, after cutting out the corners of the plywood under the legs. Be sure to check the equality of the diagonals.

Assembly frame for seat and back

They will be assembled from timber. The assembly algorithm is the same for each element.

Step 1. We twist the rectangle to the size of the seat with self-tapping screws. To make the frame strong, we reinforce the two extreme crossbars along the edges with small pieces of bars.

Step 2 We check the diagonals and fasten the plywood to the frame.

Step 3 At regular intervals, we install additional crossbars in the frame. Two of the intermediate crossbars of the backrest should be level with the position of the legs of the drawer, since the extreme loops will be attached to them.

Step 4 The seat frame is ready, but on the back frame on the back side you need to sew a cut-to-size sheet of fiberboard.

Left - back frame, right - seat frame

Leg manufacturing

Before finalizing the sofa seat, you need to make two legs for it (you can skip this step if you purchased the fittings in the store). To do this, we grind the corners of the bar with a planer and paint the rounded part with a dark stain to match the color of the upholstery.

We wrap the middle square part of the leg with synthetic winterizer and upholstery fabric, which are fixed with a stapler. We leave the upper part open for fastenings, and stuff a piece of felt on the supporting part of the leg.

The fabric was turned inside out, fastening along the upper edge, and then fixing the edges of the fabric with staples

Assembly and sheathing of the frame with plywood

Step 1. From plywood or chipboard we cut out the drawer with a length equal to the length of the seat and a width of at least 150 mm. We apply it to the seat frame and make marks on both sides of each bar.

Step 2 According to the marking, we cut out grooves with a depth of 40 mm (the thickness of the bar), set the drawer perpendicular to the base and pull it to the long bar of the frame with self-tapping screws.

Step 3 Flush with the drawer, we install the previously made legs on the frame, fix them with self-tapping screws and strengthen the fastening with a through bolt.

Step 4 From the remnants of plywood, we cut out curly sidewalls for the seat and fasten them to the sidewalls of the frame, closing the end of the drawer and the base of the leg.

Video - Seat Assembly

The frame is ready, it's time to start upholstery work. And let's start again with the drawer, its front and side panels. The rear does not need to be trimmed, it will not be visible. It is also not necessary to use foam rubber, it is enough to cut a strip from the fabric a little wider than the depth of the box, so that it is enough for a hem, and shoot it against the walls with a furniture stapler.

Production of a soft back and a seat from foam rubber

In our case, its thickness is 40 mm, the filling will consist of two layers.

Advice. The foam density must be at least 30 kg/m3. The material of lower density is too loose and soft, it will be uncomfortable to sleep on such a mattress.

Step 1. When cutting the foam rubber, make allowances of 2 cm on all sides, except for one long one.

Step 2 And stick it on the base in the same way - with overhangs. First, glue one sheet of foam rubber to the plywood of the back or seat, then a second one on top of it.

Step 3 Then cut strips from the remnants to line the ends and sides and glue them.

Attaching the next layer of foam

It remains to sew and put a cover on the sofa, securing it from below and behind with furniture brackets using a stapler. If this is not possible, it is quite possible to get by with one stapler, pulling the fabric, laying it in the folds in the corners and shooting as often as possible.

Video - Back upholstery

The assembly of the sofa is completed by screwing three loops to the back of the drawer, one of which will be attached in the middle under the central tightening bar of the drawer, and two extreme ones to its legs.

The second shelf of loops is screwed to the bottom of the back. To do this, the sofa is first set to the unfolded position, and markings are made, determining their position on the back plane of the back.

It's so simple and clear you can make a sofa with your own hands, saving the family budget. In addition, you will know what materials the product is made of.

A detailed video tutorial on making a sofa at home.

Typical furniture does not always fit a particular interior. When the standard options do not fit into the situation, you can make a sofa with your own hands - after all, any craftsman will cope with the work. To do this, you need drawings, materials, step-by-step instructions. The product, assembled independently, will last a long time, and will also look interesting in the room.

Work at home should begin with the creation of a scheme. To make the correct drawing of the sofa, you must:

  1. Select a transformation mechanism.
  2. Decide on the dimensions of the finished product, depending on its purpose (for sleeping or relaxing), as well as the area of the room in which home-made furniture will stand.
  3. Choose a model that suits the shape and design.
  4. Prepare everything you need for work.

When choosing or independently constructing a drawing, it is important to take into account the characteristics of the specific material from which the home master plans to make homemade sofas. When the scheme is ready, you can proceed to the next stage - the calculation and ordering of metal, wood (or plywood, laminated chipboard), filler, upholstery fabric, consumables.

Upholstered furniture of a standard type consists of two blocks - a back and a seat. When unfolded, these components form a sleeping place. A corner sofa made of plywood is a design of three modules interconnected in the form of the letter G (less often - P). The furniture stands on four legs, in some models rollers are used instead.

If the product is intended for rest and night sleep (for example, for a bedroom or a nursery), a niche for bedding may be provided in the design. It is also convenient to put children's toys or old, unnecessary things in such a box. The presence of a special box makes the furniture more functional, but increases the weight of the sofa, making it difficult to transport.

Before studying the drawings and diagrams, you need to decide on the dimensions. The standard dimensions of the product with the book mechanism are 140 x 220 cm when unfolded. When the furniture is assembled, these dimensions are reduced (100 x 220 cm).

First, individual parts (modules) of the product are made, and then they are combined into a single whole. Assembling the sofa is the most important stage. When connecting the two main elements together, the master must ensure that the folded seat does not extend beyond the armrests. When the sofa is laid out, the distance between the frames should not be less than 10 mm.

The back and seat are made from blanks. Their number is the same for any model. It is necessary to cut out:

  • rack;
  • top and bottom rails;
  • side bars;
  • overlays.

You will also need two crossbars for the seat - back and front. For manufacturing, a board of 50 mm is suitable. Lastly, blanks are made for the back and seat panel.

For sleep and relaxation

Materials and tools

For the manufacture of the frame, wood is most often used. Less expensive options are also possible - plywood or chipboard. Metal frames are the strongest, but they have one drawback - the large weight of the finished product. Experienced craftsmen take for work such types of wood as:

  • pine;
  • Birch;
  • alder.

When choosing a drawing, you should pay attention to the fact that each scheme is designed for specific materials. A drawing of a metal frame is not suitable for those who decide to make a sofa out of wood, and vice versa. For additional rigidity, experts recommend using a crate made of wood, plywood or chipboard. It can be made independently or replaced with lamellas of industrial production.

For upholstery, it is recommended to choose velor, tapestry or jacquard. These fabrics are stain resistant and easy to care for. The most popular fillers are batting, synthetic winterizer and pressed felt. They differ in elasticity and high density. Sintepon is a cheap option, but it does not last long.

You should prepare in advance the tools necessary for assembling the product at home. First of all, it is a furniture stapler (for upholstery) and a screwdriver. The master will also need:

  • ruler;
  • wooden or metal square;
  • stationery knife-cutter;
  • miter box.

It should be purchased in advance and diluted according to the instructions for carpentry glue and for foam rubber. You will also need consumables: self-tapping screws, wood screws, nails, staples. After that, you can start working.

In Soviet times, foam rubber was most often used as a filler for upholstered furniture. It does not last long and can cause an allergic reaction. When hauling old sofas at home, foam rubber is usually additionally compacted with padding polyester.

Choice of transformation mechanism

It is necessary to choose high-quality parts from good metal that can withstand heavy loads. Each mechanism has its pros and cons. They are presented in the table below.

Name How it works Advantages and disadvantages
Book Two frames with fixed spring blocks are responsible for the transformation, instead of which a soft filler can be used. The backrest is easy to recline, below you can put a box for storing bedding. However, such a sofa is difficult to decompose if there is not enough space in the room.
Tango The principle of operation is similar to a book, but the back of a corner sofa (or a standard-shaped product) can be in three positions: horizontal, vertical and intermediate. The furniture has a compact size, when unfolded on the sleeping surface there are no bumps, but the back cannot be leaned against the wall.
Eurobook The seat rolls forward thanks to small rollers, the back is hidden in a special niche. The mechanism lasts a long time, the bed takes up a large area, but the rollers can leave scratches on the linoleum.

Most often, in home-made products, the book mechanism is used. It is easier to make it from improvised materials. If the spring blocks are made from high-quality raw materials, they do not wear out for a long time. A more modern modification of this model is do-it-yourself eurobook sofas.

The French folding bed mechanism is very popular among lovers of transforming sofas. To expand the bed, just pull the edge of the seat, and the three sections of the product will straighten out. However, this option is not suitable for home-made furniture, because such a mechanism quickly fails.

If the room in which the sofa will be made of wood is spacious enough, you can use the accordion mechanism. Such a product takes up very little space when folded, but requires a lot of space for unfolding. When the bed is pulled forward, it rests on the outgoing legs. The main advantage is that no physical effort is required for unfolding.

Accordion sofas last a long time, but moving legs can scratch the flooring. They also have nowhere to build a box for bedding, and the niche is located in the area of the rear back, which is not very convenient.

Manufacturing steps based on the model

A step-by-step guide to making furniture for sleeping and relaxing may vary depending on the specific model. Most often, home craftsmen make classic books, corners and modular products from pallets. Each option has its own design features. Instructions for assembling sofas depend on them.

Sofa book

For work, you will need timber and boards, foam rubber as a filler and upholstery fabric. You also need a ready-made transformation mechanism. Consumables will require nuts, screws, furniture bolts, staples. Below is a step by step guide. Necessary:

  1. Assemble a laundry box from boards measuring 1900 mm. Strengthen the finished product with 2 rails.
  2. Make two frames - for the seat and back, fix the slats on them to support the mattress.
  3. Cut out armrests from fiberboard. Use boards 55 mm wide and 1 m long.
  4. Make a wooden frame for the armrests and assemble the parts into one whole.
  5. Drill holes in the bedding drawer.
  6. Assemble a sofa book from modules.

When installing the transformation mechanism, it must be ensured that in a horizontal position the distance between the backrest and the seat is about 10 mm. To strengthen the structure, you can additionally apply a grid of rails. The frame is sheathed with sheets of foam rubber. To smooth out sharp corners along the edge of the product, it is recommended to glue an additional strip of the specified material as a border. If everything is done correctly, you should get a soft roller. The sofa the book differs in compactness and convenience, has interesting design.

Angular

For work you will need timber and boards. You should also pre-select plywood or chipboard. The first option is more durable and reliable, the second is cheap. The minimum recommended chipboard thickness is 16 mm, it makes no sense to take thinner material. Stages of work:

  1. Draw a drawing. Calculate the length of both modules.
  2. Draw up a diagram showing the locations of the fasteners.
  3. Assemble and fasten with self-tapping screws a rectangular frame of boards.
  4. Install the cross bars in the center of the lower and upper parts.
  5. Sew up fiberboard at the bottom of the box.
  6. In the described way, make the second half of the product, the corner insert of a square handicap.
  7. Fold and fasten the three received elements.
  8. Make a back of 6 modules, fasten all the parts to each other with a beam.
  9. Install the seat on the hinges attached to the backrest components.
  10. Fill upholstered furniture with foam rubber at least 10 cm thick.
  11. Sheathe the frame with upholstery fabric.

For upholstery you will need a furniture stapler. It is recommended to start sheathing from the farthest corner of upholstered furniture, gradually moving to the center. You need to nail the fabric to the back from the bottom up. When this part is already processed, go to the sides. Lastly, the seat is covered with fabric.

Do-it-yourself corner sofa

Pallets are wooden pallets. You can find them at any hardware store. Craftsmen use pallets as modules in the manufacture of upholstered and cabinet furniture at home. To make original sofas with your own hands for a summer residence, you will need one large pallet. To work you need:

  1. Saw the pallet into 2 fragments - large (seat) and small (back).
  2. Attach the legs to the seat with screws.
  3. Fix the back in the desired position. To do this, you need wooden corners.
  4. Prime and varnish the surface of the furniture.
  5. Fasten the plywood for the back to the crossbars using the hinges.

If the product will stand in the country or on the balcony, it is best to sew a protective cover and decorative pillows from leatherette. This material is unpretentious in care. Also, leatherette tolerates high humidity well and has a long service life.

To make a product of standard sizes, suitable for sleeping and relaxing, you will need 6-8 pallets. Manufacturing technology will be about the same. One of the pallets needs to be disassembled into boards and used to fasten the modules to each other. Before you start sleeping on such furniture, it is advisable to lay an orthopedic mattress.

Finished pallet sofa

To make a soft sofa, it is recommended to choose functional models with drawers and good quality filler. Roll-out (retractable) options with rollers and guides are very popular. They are good because they do not require physical effort to unfold.

You should not save on fittings, because the life of the furniture depends on the reliability of fasteners. Novice joiners and carpenters are better off choosing clear geometric models. They are suitable for interiors in any style. They are also much easier to make clearly and accurately compared to furniture of complex shapes.

Spike joints located at the ends of the boards increase the strength of the product and increase its service life. However, it is impossible to make them at home, this requires special equipment. For this reason, a novice carpenter should not set himself such a task.

Experts do not advise connecting individual elements with nails. Instead, experienced craftsmen use screws or self-tapping screws. If nails are used, the fasteners are gradually loosened.

Recommended wood species for making a sofa at home are spruce and pine. Before work, the boards are carefully polished - the surface of the material must be smooth, without roughness. Do not cut boards indoors, as wood dust accumulated in the air is harmful to health and can cause allergies.

For stuffing the back, you need to use thin foam rubber, for the seat - more dense. You can glue several sheets together. It is necessary to pay attention to the density of joining of soft parts with each other. A thin layer of synthetic winterizer is laid on top of the foam rubber to protect the filler from external influences. In furniture factories, it is used to make sofas softer.

The frame must support the weight of several people. A children's sofa made of timber is calculated based on the weight of babies (teenagers), an adult - depending on the build of older family members.

In order for wood or chipboard products to serve for a long time, all parts must be treated with a special furniture varnish (stain). If the garden sofa is intended for children to relax, the coating should not contain aggressive and allergenic chemicals. Homemade sofas have many advantages. They fit well into any space, look unusual, suitable for sleeping and relaxing. The main thing is to choose high-quality material for work and clearly present the step-by-step sequence of actions. Then making upholstered furniture with your own hands will become an interesting hobby.
