« Enchanted place"- the fourth and final story of the second part of Gogol's Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka. It is told again by the deacon of the local church, Foma Grigorievich. The main character of the story is his grandfather, already familiar to readers from the story “The Missing Letter”.

One summer, when Foma Grigorievich was still a small child, his grandfather planted a garden with melons and watermelons along the road and sold the fruits from it to passing merchants. One day, about six carts stopped at the garden, in which old friends of my grandfather were traveling. Delighted by the meeting, the grandfather treated his old friends well, and then started dancing to celebrate. Making, despite his old age, various intricate knees, he reached one place near a bed of cucumbers - and there his grandfather’s legs suddenly became like wood and stopped serving him. Moving back, he accelerated again, but in the same place he again stood as if under a spell. Cursing Satan, the grandfather suddenly heard someone laughing behind him. He looked around and saw that he was not at all where he had stood a moment before, but on the other side of his village. And it was no longer day, but night.

At a distance, the grandfather noticed a grave. A candle suddenly flashed on it, followed by another. According to popular legend, such things happened in places where treasures were buried. The grandfather was very happy, but he had neither a spade nor a shovel with him. Noticing a place with a large branch of treasure, the grandfather returned home.

The next day he went with a spade to dig for treasure. It turned out, however, that the place he noticed did not look quite the same as the day before. The view of the surrounding area was different, and the grandfather could not find the branch he had left yesterday. Turning back, he walked through the garden to the enchanted place where he could not dance, in his anger he hit the ground with a spade - and again found himself on the same outskirts of the village where he had been the day before. Now she looked the same as then. The grandfather immediately saw the grave there and the branch left on it.

The grandfather began to dig in search of treasure and soon came across a cauldron in the ground. “Ah, my dear, that’s where you are!” - the grandfather cried, and these words of his were suddenly repeated in human voices by a bird that flew in from nowhere, a ram’s head hanging from a tree, and a growling bear. A terrible mug appeared from the stump of a neighboring tree, and suddenly the grandfather seemed to see a deep hole nearby, and behind him a huge mountain. Somehow overcoming his fear, he pulled the cauldron with the treasure out of the ground, grabbed it and ran as fast as he could. From behind, someone is lashing his legs with rods...

Meanwhile, in the garden, Thomas, his brothers and their mother, who had come to feed them dinner, wondered: where had grandfather gone again? Having collected the slops in a bucket after dinner, the mother was looking for where to pour it, and suddenly she saw: a tub was moving towards her, as if by itself. The mother thought that the guys were joking and splashed the slop into the tub, but then there was a scream, and instead of the tub she saw in front of her a drenched grandfather with a large cauldron in his hands. However, instead of the gold that the old man hoped to find, there was rubbish and squabbles in the cauldron...

And no matter how much later they sowed, writes Gogol, that enchanted place in the middle of the garden, nothing worthwhile ever grew there. Something sprang up in this place that you can’t even make out: a watermelon is not a watermelon, a pumpkin is not a pumpkin, a cucumber is not a cucumber... the devil knows what it is!

Enchanted place

They say that a person can control an unclean spirit. Don't say that. If the devilish power wants to make you faint, it will make you faint...

I was eleven years old. My father had four of us. At the beginning of spring, Father took tobacco to Crimea to sell. He took his three-year-old brother with him, and I, my mother and two brothers remained. Grandfather sowed a mash tree right next to the road and went to live in the kuren.

Grandfather liked the fact that fifty Chumakov carts would pass by him in a day, and everyone could tell something.

One day six carts were driving past: old friends of Grandfather Maxim. We sat in a circle, ate melons, and talked. My grandfather took us in and made my brother and I play the sopilka and dance. And he himself, even though he is old, cannot resist, so his legs dance. And then he couldn’t stand it, and the grandfather began to dance on the path between the cucumber beds. But as soon as he reached the middle of the path, his legs stopped lifting. I accelerated at first, danced to that place, and again my legs became wooden. “Look, a devilish place! Look, a satanic obsession! Herod, the enemy of the human race, will get involved!”

Ah, the rogue Satan! May you choke on a rotten melon!.. - said the grandfather.

And someone laughed from behind. The grandfather turned around, and the place was unfamiliar, a field around, then he took a good look and recognized the threshing floor of the volost clerk. This is where the evil spirits dragged me!

Then the grandfather went out onto the path, and a candle lit up on the grave to the side of it. Then the candle went out, and a little further from it another lighted up... Grandfather decided that there was a treasure here. He wanted to dig right away, but he didn’t have a spade with him. The grandfather noticed the place and went home.

The next day, in the evening, armed with a spade and shovel, the grandfather went to the priest’s garden. I reached the place and began to look: there was a threshing floor - the dovecote was gone, the dovecote was visible - there was no threshing floor. And then it started to rain heavily. Grandfather went home.

The next day, walking through his garden, the grandfather struck with a spade on the path where there was no dancing with the words: “Cursed place!” And again I found myself in the field where I saw the candles. Now he had a spade.

He ran to the grave and began to dig. The earth is soft, he dug a cauldron. The grandfather spoke to himself, and around him someone repeated his words several times. The grandfather decided that this was the devil who didn’t want to give up the treasure.

To hell with you! - said the grandfather, throwing the cauldron. - Your treasure is yours!

The grandfather started to run away from there, but everything was quiet around. Grandfather returned and grabbed

Boiler and run as fast as you could. And so he ran to the priest’s garden.

And the mother waited until the evening for the grandfather, but he was still not there. We've already had dinner. The mother washed the pot and began to look for where to pour the slop. And here comes the kitchen along the path. The mother poured hot slop into it. Grandfather will scream in a deep voice!

He began to tell us that now there will be children with bagels, he dug up a treasure. They opened the cauldron, and there was rubbish in there and it was a shame to say what it was.

Since then, the grandfather no longer believes the devil.

And don't think! - he often told us, - whatever the enemy of the Lord Christ says, he will lie, son of a dog! He doesn't have a penny's worth of truth!

And the grandfather will hear that somewhere is restless:

Come on guys, let's baptize! - he will shout to us too. - That's it! so him! good! - and begins to lay crosses.

And the place where there was no dancing in the garden, the grandfather fenced off with a fence, and threw all the weeds and rubbish there.

This is how the evil spirit fools a person!

The great Russian classic N.V. Gogol, although he was a very religious person, he had a certain passion for writing stories about all sorts of “unclean” deeds - horror stories that old people loved to tell in the evening on a farm, under a torch or near a fire, yes so that later everyone who listened to them, both old and young, would shudder in horror.

Stories like this in a huge number Gogol knew. "Enchanted Place" ( summary This work will be presented a little lower) - one of these works. It is part of the two-volume series of stories “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”. This one was first printed in 1832 in the second volume.

Gogol, "The Enchanted Place". Heroes and plot

Old grandfather Thomas was also a storyteller, and everyone pestered him: tell me, tell me. It was impossible to get rid of them. And so he began his next story with the fact that if the devilish power wants to make someone faint, it will definitely do it. When he was still a boy of about eleven, his father, taking his three-year-old brother with him, went to the Crimea to trade tobacco. The grandfather, mother, Thomas and his two brothers remained to live on the bashtan (a field with watermelons, melons and various vegetables). A road stretched nearby, and one evening, Chumakov transport workers passed by, who were traveling to the Crimea to buy goods - salt and fish. Grandfather recognized his old acquaintances among them. The guests settled down in the hut, lit the cradles and began to help themselves to melons. And then they began to remember the past. In the end it all came down to dancing.

Continuation of Gogol's work "The Enchanted Place"

The grandfather made his grandchildren dance - Foma and his brother Ostap, and even started dancing and ordered pretzels, but as soon as he reached the smooth place where the cucumber bed was, his legs stopped obeying him and stood up, he could not move them. Then the grandfather began to swear at the unclean woman, believing that these were her tricks. And then someone giggled behind him, he looked back, and behind him there were no Chumakov, no fields with vegetables.

What does Gogol talk about next? “The Enchanted Place” has a brief summary: the grandfather began to take a closer look at the area, and recognized the priest’s dovecote and the fenced plot of land of the volost clerk. Having found his bearings a little, he went to his garden, but saw that not far from the road there was a grave with a candle burning. The grandfather immediately thought it was a treasure and regretted that he did not have a shovel. He noticed this place so that he could return later, put a branch on the grave and went home.

Treasured treasure

Gogol’s “Enchanted Place” continues interestingly. The summary tells that the next day, already towards evening, as soon as it got dark, main character went to look for the treasured grave with a mark. On the way, he saw the priest's dovecote, but for some reason there was no clerk's garden. When he stepped aside, the dovecote immediately disappeared. He realized that all this was the work of the evil one. And then it started to rain, the grandfather returned to his place.

In the morning he went to work in the beds with a shovel and, passing by that mysterious place where his legs stopped obeying him in the dance, he could not restrain himself and hit it with a shovel. And lo and behold, he is again in the place where his mark and grave are. Grandfather was glad that now he had a tool and would definitely dig up his treasure now. He approached the grave, and there was a stone lying there. The old man moved it and wanted to sniff the tobacco. But then someone sneezed nearby and even sprayed him. Grandfather realized that the devil did not like his tobacco. He began to dig and came across a pot. He exclaimed with joy: “There you are, my dear.” And then these words echoed, the bird's beak, the ram's head and the bear's snout shouted from the tree. Grandfather immediately began to tremble. He decided to run away, but still took the bowler hat with him.

Gogol’s “Enchanted Place” brings us to an intriguing point. The summary is gaining momentum.

The machinations of the evil one

Everyone at home had lost their grandfather and had already sat down and had dinner. The mother went out to pour the slop into the yard, and then she saw the cauldron moving along the path on its own; out of fear, she threw all the hot slop on it. In fact, it was the grandfather who was walking with a cauldron, and all the slop in the form of skins of melons and watermelons hung on his head. The mother, of course, got it from him, but then the grandfather, having calmed down, told his grandchildren that soon they would be wearing new caftans. However, when he opened the cauldron, he found no gold there.

From that time on, the grandfather taught the children not to trust the devil, since he will always deceive, and that he does not have a penny of truth. Now every time he crossed places that seemed strange to him. And the grandfather fenced off that enchanted plot and no longer cultivated it, only throwing all kinds of garbage there. Then, when other people sowed watermelons and melons on it, nothing worthwhile grew there anymore. This is where Gogol's story “The Enchanted Place” ended.

Read summary, brief retelling fairy tales "The Enchanted Place"
The sexton tells an incident from his youth.
His father took him to sell tobacco, and the narrator, grandfather, mother and two brothers remained at home. For the summer, the grandfather went to live in a kuren near the road, and took the boys with him. And then one day the Chumaks, six carts, appeared along the road. Ahead walked a chumak with a large gray mustache.
He recognized his grandfather and said hello. The grandfather was delighted with his old acquaintances and went in to kiss. Everyone sat down, took watermelons, and the grandfather ordered them to play the nozzle and dance. And even my grandfather’s legs were bursting to dance. And so he could not stand it and rushed to trim his knees. I accelerated, reached the middle, but my knee didn’t work out. He turned around, came back, again reached the same place - it didn’t work.
The grandfather swore at Satan, and lo and behold, the place around was unfamiliar. The grandfather took a closer look, saw the priest’s dovecote, and got out onto the path. It goes on, and the night is dark, impenetrable. Suddenly a candle was lit at the grave - there was treasure there. The grandfather regretted that there was neither a shovel nor a spade, he piled a huge log on the grave and went home. I came home, the Chumaks had already left, and my grandfather fell asleep.
The next day, towards evening, the grandfather took a shovel and went to the priest’s garden. He walked and wandered, but couldn’t find the grave. And then it started to rain. Grandfather came home wet, lying there, swearing with the last words.
The next day, the grandfather walked through the melon patch as if nothing had happened, covering the watermelons. And in the evening I walked past the enchanted place with a shovel, couldn’t stand it, walked into the middle and hit it with a spade. And again I found myself in the same place near the grave. And the candle burns again.
The grandfather approached the grave. He sees a huge stone lying on it. The grandfather dug up the stone and pushed it off the grave. The grandfather stopped to take a break, poured tobacco on his fist, just brought it to his nose, someone behind him sneezed, he sprayed it all over the grandfather.
Grandfather turns around - no one. Grandfather began to dig. I dug up the pot and was delighted. “There you are, my dear,” he says. And the bird's nose repeats the same words. And then a ram's head from the top of the tree. And a bear from behind a tree. Grandfather became scared, and the bird's nose, the ram and the bear all repeated after him.
The grandfather got scared and looked around. And the night is terrible - no month, no stars. Yes, some mug peeks out from behind the mountain, his eyes are red, his nose is like fur in a forge. Grandfather threw the cauldron and was just about to run when everything disappeared, everything became quiet.
The grandfather understood that evil spirits only frighten. With difficulty he pulled out the cauldron and ran as fast as he could. And only at the priest’s garden he stopped.
Meanwhile, everyone at home was wondering where grandfather had disappeared to. The mother had already come from the farm with dumplings, everyone had already dined, and the mother washed the cauldron and was looking for a place to pour the slop. He looks like a barrel is coming, someone must be pushing it from behind.
The mother decided that the boys were playing around and poured the hot slop directly into the barrel. When someone starts yelling in a deep voice, lo and behold, it’s grandfather.
He wiped himself off, had a fight, and puts out the boiler. Wealth promises. He opens it, and there is rubbish, garbage, dirt. The grandfather spat and ordered never to believe in evil spirits. As soon as he appeared, he immediately began to be baptized. And he ordered to throw rubbish and rubbish onto the damned place.
Good watermelons grew there.

Drawings and illustrations for the fairy tale "The Enchanted Place"

Drafts of Gogol's story "Enchanted Place" have not been preserved, therefore exact date its creation is unknown. It was most likely written in 1830. The story “The Enchanted Place” was included in the second book of the collection “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka”.

The works in this collection have a complex hierarchy of narrators. The subtitle of the cycle indicates that “Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka” was published by a certain beekeeper Rudy Panko. The stories “The Evening on the Eve of Ivan Kupala”, “The Missing Letter” and “The Enchanted Place” were told by the sexton of one church. This removal of the author from the participant in the events allowed Gogol to achieve double effect. Firstly, to avoid accusations of inventing “fables”, and secondly, to emphasize the folk spirit of the story.

Plot The story is really based on the traditions of folklore, which were well known to the writer from childhood. Tales about “cursed places” and treasures are typical for the myth-making of many peoples. In Slavic legends, treasures were often sought in cemeteries. The desired grave was indicated by a suddenly lit candle. Traditional for folk stories And motive turning ill-gotten wealth into trash.

The originality of the story is manifested in the bright and rich language, which is generously dotted with Ukrainian words: "Chumaks", "kuren", "bashtan", "lads"... An extremely accurate depiction of folk life, as well as the writer’s sparkling humor, create a special Gogolian atmosphere, full of poetic fantasy and slyness. It seems to the reader that he himself is among the sexton’s listeners. This effect is achieved through the narrator’s apt comments.

Main character story - grandfather Maxim. The author describes it with kind irony. This is a lively, cheerful and active old man who loves to brag, dances dashingly and is not afraid of the devil himself. Grandfather really likes to listen to the stories of the Chumaks. He scolds his grandchildren and calls them "dog children", but it is clear that the old man dotes on the tomboys. And they make fun of their grandfather in a friendly manner.

An important element of the story is the enchanted place itself. In our time it would be called an anomalous zone. Grandfather accidentally discovers "bad place" while dancing. As soon as the old man gets to his border “near the cucumber bed”, so the legs stop dancing on their own. And inside the enchanted place, strange things happen with space and time, which the grandfather attributes to the action of evil spirits.

The transition between the real and unreal world is depicted in the form of distorted space. The landmarks that the grandfather marks for himself in the anomaly zone do not appear in the real world. He just can’t find the point from which the priest’s dovecote and the hair clerk’s threshing floor are visible.

Damn place has "one's own character". It does not like strangers, but does not harm uninvited guests, but only frightens them. Particular damage from the penetration of irrational forces into real world also no. The land in the anomalous zone simply does not produce crops. The enchanted place is not averse to playing with grandfather. Either he doesn’t allow you to come to him, despite all your efforts, then suddenly he opens up easily. The anomalous zone has many unusual means in its arsenal: suddenly bad weather, the disappearance of the month from the sky, monsters. Fear forces the old man to abandon his find for a while. But the thirst for profit turns out to be stronger, so otherworldly forces decide to teach the grandfather a lesson. In the cauldron, which was obtained with such difficulty in a cursed place, there were not jewelry, but “rubbish, squabbles and ashamed to say what it is”.

After such science, the hero of the story became very religious, swore to deal with evil spirits himself and punished all his loved ones. The grandfather takes revenge in his own way on the devil who fooled him so much. The old man fences off the enchanted place with a fence and throws out all the garbage from the tower there.

Such an ending is natural. Gogol shows that such treasures do not bring good. The grandfather receives not a treasure as a reward, but ridicule. Thus, the writer affirms the idea of the illusory nature of any wealth acquired by dishonest labor.

Pushkin, Herzen, Belinsky and other contemporaries of Gogol enthusiastically accepted The Enchanted Place. And today readers with a smile and great interest plunge into amazing world, where wit, poetry and fantasy reign, the very soul of the people comes to life.
