It is quite possible for a home master to make a tool box with his own hands. When a lot of tools accumulate in the house, there is a need for their neat storage. Making such a box for a craftsman is not at all a problem, because the question will be rather about what kind of box such a person needs.

Figure 1. A simple carpenter's box is convenient for storing the most necessary tools and materials in it.

About materials and tools

The easiest way is to assemble a box from solid wood or plywood. These materials are easy to find and easy to process, and they are stronger than the plastic containers you can buy in stores. To assemble a wooden box you will need:

  • jigsaw and hacksaw;
  • drill and screwdriver;
  • file and sandpaper;
  • board 2 cm thick, bar 2.5x5 cm, lining or thick plywood;
  • accessories (piano hinges, hooks, handles, etc.);
  • carpenter's glue and self-tapping screws.

Figure 2. The tool case is made of plywood and several bars.

Before starting work, it is necessary to determine what type of box you want to make: for a large tool, for small items, universal sliding (transformer) or some other.

Draw a diagram and mark on it the dimensions of the storage for tools, the presence of compartments and their parameters, additional details in the form of a lid, constipation or handles.

Then you should make drawings of parts.

And only then proceed to the manufacture of the tool box.

Tool boxes

A simple carpenter's box was invented by our great-grandfathers: it is an open box with a handle. It can be conveniently placed in large tools like an ax or a hacksaw, and various small things (nails, files, etc.). Rice. 1. It consists of 2 parts, end walls of a complex shape, which are easy to make if you draw a rectangle of the desired length and width, and build a trapezoid on its upper side. The height of the trapezoid will be equal to the height at which the carrying handle will be located.

The sides and bottom of the box are rectangles. The length of the sidewalls is equal to the length of the bottom and is dictated by the desired dimensions of the product. The width of the sidewalls is equal to the height of the walls of the box, and the width of the bottom is equal to the width of the end walls. When creating a drawing, it is necessary to take into account the thickness of the material and the fact that during assembly the parts are located overlapping one another (end walls on the sidewalls). Therefore, to the desired width of the box, you need to add twice the thickness of the board or plywood.

Figure 3. Transformer box - a convenient and compact version of the tool box.

If you need to have a partition inside the box, you need to mark its location on the drawing (along, across, in the center or otherwise) and calculate its dimensions, knowing the width and height of the side walls. You can first assemble the box, and then measure its internal parameters and cut out a rectangle for the partition.

You need to assemble a tool box with your own hands in the following sequence:

  • at a distance equal to ½ of the thickness of the material, drill holes in the lower part of the sidewalls with a constant step of 5-10 cm;
  • attach to the glue and screws of the sidewall to the long side of the bottom;
  • on the bottom and side vertical sides of the ends, drill rows of holes for fasteners;
  • fasten with glue and self-tapping screws to the edges of the sidewalls and bottom.

In the upper part of the end walls, mark the place for attaching the handle. It can be fixed as in the figure above, on self-tapping screws, or you can make through holes in plywood and thread a piece of bar, a metal tube or a handle of a suitable diameter through them, fixing it with glue or limiters from self-tapping screws or nails.

The box in the form of a tool case (Fig. 2) is also easy to assemble:

  1. From a 2.5x5 cm bar, make details for the bottom frame. Saw off 2 pieces of length equal to the inside length of the suitcase plus 5 cm, and 2 pieces of length equal to the desired inside width plus 2.5 cm.
  2. At the ends of the parts of the long sides, at a distance of 2.5 cm from the edge, make transverse cuts for half the thickness of the bar (1.25 cm) and remove part of the wood with a chisel before cutting.
  3. Place the details of the short sides on carpentry glue in the grooves obtained.
  4. Cut out a rectangle from plywood 6 mm thick, the length and width of which are equal to the external dimensions of the suitcase. Glue it around the perimeter to the bars or attach it to self-tapping screws.
  5. Make the same design for the cover. If desired, the depth of the cover can be reduced by picking up bars with a smaller width or sawing a bar of 2.5x5 cm along the width (you get 2 bars of 2.5x2.5 cm). Connect the bottom and the lid with piano hinges, make a handle and screw the hooks.
  6. Inside the suitcase, glue short pieces of bar for sockets for tools. From thin strips, make turntables to securely hold the contents during transportation.

How to make a transformer box?

This is a sliding drawer that can be made compact for carrying, and deployed during work, creating convenient access to drawers with large tools and small items. Rice. 3.

First you need to collect the largest, bottom box. Its dimensions are chosen so that the largest tool can be placed there. Make smaller boxes with a width equal to ½ the width of a large box, and a length equal to its length. There should be an even number of smaller boxes. Inside them, you can arrange partitions, provide retractable pen-type lids or equip at your discretion. For the top pair of drawers, make comfortable hinged lids.

The transformation mechanism consists of several metal strips. Their number depends on the "floors" of the box. The first, short strip connects the lower drawer with 1 smaller one, the next one connects the lower one, 1 and 2 smaller ones, another one can connect 1 and 2 smaller ones, as in the figure, but if there is a next row of drawers, it should also capture it. If more tiers are needed, then each next strip should also capture 3 adjacent rows.

The strips should be mounted in the “folded box” state, placing them from the inner corner of the tier above to the projection of its middle on the tier below, fastening to each box they hold. From the strip of the last tier, you can make a handle, as in the figure, or bring its ends above the box and screw the handle from the bar onto the screws. If there is no strip of sufficient length for the manufacture of handles, then they can be attached to the end walls of the upper tier separately in a convenient place. Any durable material is suitable for their manufacture: leather belts, canvas tape, wood or metal.

Every man will agree that a high-quality and multifunctional tool box is an almost indispensable thing in the household. Many masters prefer to buy a ready-made box in the nearest store, where a wide range is presented. But such a device can be made independently, in accordance with personal wishes. Moreover, the manufacturing process itself is not considered difficult, thanks to which even a beginner can cope with this task.

Classification of tool boxes

There are several main criteria by which multifunctional products can be divided into several main groups.

According to the material from which the case is made:

By type of stored instruments:

Construction of modern boxes

Speaking about the design of such boxes, we mean not their shape, but the way of opening and the presence of auxiliary sections. The following designs are considered standard today:

Making a plywood box

To make a do-it-yourself tool box out of plywood, you will need the following tools and materials:

Before proceeding with manufacturing, you need to carefully work out the design of the future product (the drawing can be made on a computer or on plain paper). The necessary calculations are made, the main dimensions are fixed. After that all marks must be transferred to a sheet of plywood. You can do this with a regular ruler, tape measure, marker or even a pencil. All blanks for the future box are cut along the marked lines. And also it is necessary to mark all the grooves and cut them on the blanks. The irregularities formed during the work can be processed with a chisel. It is thanks to the grooves that the final design of the box will turn out to be stronger and more durable.

The next step is to assemble the entire structure. To glue small parts, use high-quality wood glue. The main sides of the box are also glued together. To improve the result, they need to be pressed tightly against each other. It is best to use a special rubber strip for this. You can not remove it until the glue is completely dry. On the doors you need to round the corners.

A convenient handle for boxing with tools can be made from MDF. Initially, the layout is drawn directly on the wood and only then cut out. When the handle is ready, the surface must be treated. It is attached with carpenter's glue and screws.. If you don’t want to make a handle yourself, then you can buy it at a hardware store. The main criterion for the right choice is high strength and reliability. Now you need to attach the outer cover of the drawer and the door. All parts are applied in their places, and then the areas for fastening the loops are marked with a pencil.

To organize the order in the box, you can make small compartments. All components are cut out according to the same principle as the box. Grooves are made and glued. On one side of the box, you can make a special compartment for storing screwdrivers. The most convenient option is considered where this function is performed by special inserts with plywood slots. Velcro is attached to the other side of the drawer to store cables and extension cords.

Wooden box manufacturing technology

It is this option that is considered a classic carpentry. Drawings of this portable storage were printed in magazines 50 years ago. For the manufacture of you will need a high-quality board with a thickness of 10 to 20 mm, as well as a hacksaw for wood. Thanks to the simple manufacturing technology, many craftsmen still choose this option.

The classic design does not provide for the presence of separate compartments or special multifunctional devices. The final product will look like a neat deep box with a comfortable handle along the entire length. This shape of the handle has a practical purpose. After all, if the weight of the tools used is unevenly distributed, then you can always find the point of the center of gravity.

A practical addition can be an insert section with its own handle, the height of which occupies 50% of the entire drawer. This insert can be used for small tools(awl, screwdrivers, small keys), as well as consumables (screwdriver bits, electrical tape, drills). For its manufacture, you can use any type of wood.

Universal case made of plastic canister

If you want to make a do-it-yourself tool box, but there is no plywood sheet, then you can use a regular plastic canister. For work you will need:

  • Hacksaw.
  • Plastic container.
  • fasteners.

The canister used must necessarily be rectangular in shape with a comfortable handle, which must be located in the center. In addition, it must be equipped with a screw cap that will be used as a lock.

The process of making a box is quite simple. Using a hacksaw, you need to make cuts in the canister. The first cut should fall on the center of the neck and the handle of the container, it is best to remove the cork and saw through the top wall. The second cut is made exclusively in the horizontal direction. It is best if it is located at the top of the canister, on the end sides. The plastic container itself needs to be sawn from the top wall at a distance of 4 cm, and on the sides by 3 cm.

When all cuts are made, the canister can be opened. To do this, you need to bend all the side parts of the top cover with the halves of the handle. In such a box, you can store various materials for fasteners: nails, bolts, screws, nuts. The upper part must be closed by folding the handles together. Such a device is fixed with a screw cap.

To make the box as strong as possible, on the end walls it is necessary to make additional gaps. Small holes are drilled in the lid itself or in the walls, into which hooks are inserted, as well as bolts with nuts.

Metal box for tools

This option is most suitable for experienced locksmiths who have the necessary equipment and material. Factory metal tool boxes are made from lighter metals such as aluminium. As a result, the product is as light and durable as possible. But working with aluminum at home is much more difficult.

Even a beginner can make this version of a metal box. After all, the most ordinary box and special partitions will be made of metal. Initially, you need to prepare the main material - galvanized steel (0.4 mm thick). From the tools you need to prepare:

  • Marking caliper.
  • Metal square.
  • Ruler.
  • A hammer.
  • Pliers.
  • File.
  • Sharpened core or marker.
  • Anvil.

Next is drawing and marking. You need to mark only those places that will later need to be deleted. Now you can start trimming with metal scissors. After trimming everything superfluous, you should get a kind of geometric figure (winged rectangle).

Next, you need to use the anvil. Tapping with a hammer, gradually bend the edges of the workpiece. It is better not to work in a chaotic manner, all actions must be consistent. First, one sidewall is bent, and then another. To wrap protruding parts, pliers are used.

After these manipulations, you need to go over the entire structure with a hammer to align it. In this case, you get a small metal box for storing tools. In the future, you can experiment not only with the sizes, but also with the shapes of such boxes.

Almost every home has one or another tool. When there are too many of them, you can independently make a multifunctional box for storing them. Experienced craftsmen believe that such a box is considered an essential attribute for storing various devices. Such boxes can be stored in the workshop and even taken with you on a long journey.

The life of a real home master is inconceivable without a large number of manual and mechanical assistants used to process wood, metal, and perform various types of work. For storing tools, various devices of industrial production and self-production are used. Among the most common ways to store and carry a special place is occupied by tool boxes.

For self-creation of such products, lumber or artificial wood materials - chipboard, plywood or OSB boards can be used.

The process of making such a product allows you to get a container for the dimensions of specific tools, in contrast to purchased ready-made boxes. Below, the attention of readers will be offered a description of the sequence of work on the manufacture of such boxes.

The product shown below can be used for temporary storage and transport of some tools to the job site.

Or stationery, which are often widely used when marking up.

Making a box will require the preparation of the following materials:

  • softwood or hardwood board 20 x 100 x 850 mm thick.
  • round wooden rod with a diameter of 20 and a length of 260 mm;
  • wood screws - 8 pcs. 32 mm long;
  • wood glue;
  • sandpaper.

From the tools you need to prepare a ruler, a pencil, a jigsaw, a drill, a screwdriver and a grinder of any kind.

We start work with marking the details. To do this, on the prepared planed board, we apply the contours of future details - the end and side walls, the bottom.

We cut out the parts with an electric jigsaw, having previously installed a file for a clean cut. The edges and planes of the obtained parts are carefully processed with sandpaper.

In the end walls in the center at an equal distance from the lower edge, we mark the center and drill a blind hole about ten millimeters deep, the diameter of which is equal to the diameter of the round rod. Along the side and bottom edges, we drill three through holes with a diameter of 4-5 millimeters for installing screws. In the same way, we make two holes in the bottom of the future box.

After preparing the holes, you can begin to assemble the product. To ensure maximum strength, the edges of the side walls and bottom are glued with glue, applying it in a thin layer. The ends of the round rod are also pre-coated with glue.

Install the side walls and the bottom with one of the ends to the curly walls and attach the parts with self-tapping screws. Install the rod in the prepared hole with one of the ends. After that, perform the same operations with the second curly wall. To protect the material of the drawer, treat the surfaces with an oil-based or nitro-based clear varnish.

The design of the second tool box is more capacious, has increased dimensions compared to the first. For its manufacture, you will need sheets of plywood or OSB boards with a thickness of 15 and 10 millimeters. You also need to prepare the following tools: a ruler and a pencil for marking, a jigsaw for sawing out parts and pens, a screwdriver, self-tapping screws for assembly 30 mm long, sandpaper or a grinder for finishing blots and planes of parts.

The dimensions of the product are 600 × 400x200 millimeters. Inside, in the upper part of the container, two drawers are installed for small parts and tools glued from thinner plywood. For their fixation, two guides are attached along the side walls, made in the form of strips no more than three centimeters thick.

We begin the process of manufacturing a tool box by marking out the details of a large and small insert boxes. If necessary, each master can vary the estimated size of the product depending on the purpose. The marked parts are cut with an electric jigsaw and cleaned with sanding paper. Details of small boxes are assembled with glue. For a better connection of the inner walls dividing the space into separate sections, shallow grooves can be made along the thickness of the material. Clamps and other clamping devices will help facilitate the gluing job.

We assemble the parts of a large box using self-tapping screws. To improve the assembly quality, insert self-tapping screws into pre-drilled and countersunk holes.

Do not forget to fix with self-tapping screws two guides parallel to the bottom of the box, on which small containers will rest.

For the manufacture of a handle, you can use the option proposed in the design indicated above, or install a round rod on self-tapping screws of sufficient length. As a blank for him, a piece of a cutting for agricultural implements, which is not difficult to purchase at any hardware store, may be suitable.

Plywood is not a moisture resistant material. To protect the product when working on the street, it is necessary to impregnate all the details of the box with some kind of protective composition, stain or varnish.

Thus, after performing a few simple operations, everyone can make for themselves a convenient device for carrying and storing tools. The use of such a box will greatly facilitate the process of repair and construction work, not only indoors, but also on the territory of the land.

There are many professions that use different types of tools. Most often, tool boxes are purchased for their storage, but sometimes high-quality storage is easier to do with your own hands.

If you are interested in this or that type of craft, and you are not sitting at home idly by, naturally, you have a fairly large number of tools. To ensure that your tools are always at hand and securely stored, they need to be provided with a storage system in the form of a separate enclosed space called a drawer. for storing tools. In addition to safety, the use of such a box will greatly help in the work, since the filling will be neatly sorted into compartments and in the future you can find the necessary device “blindly”. Also, this device is necessary for car owners, or rather, owners of trucks and gazelles. The box must be well secured in the car. And this means that when making it with your own hands, you need to think carefully about where it will be located in the car and how to fix it there.

Decide on two criteria:

  • Will you only store tools in it, or do you also need it for ease of transportation?
  • what sizes of tools do you intend to store in it?

Crate classification

Body material:

  • plastic - light in weight, convenient in everyday life and for transportation;
  • metal - much heavier than plastic, but at the same time much stronger, more stable, have a more rigid structure, cannot be large due to the severity of the metal;
  • metal-plastic galvanized - light, durable and roomy, suitable for both storage and transportation of professional tools. But all these advantages determine the corresponding price - it can range from $150 to $500 and more.
  • wooden - the most affordable material for making a tool box. Moreover, it is easier to do it with your own hands from this material, or rather from plywood 10 16 or 18 mm.

By type of stored instruments:

  • hand tools - as a rule, they are represented by one large compartment for large tools (screwdrivers, hammers, keys) and 2-3 small ones for smaller tools;

  • an electric tool is a case that is functionally designed to store and move a specific power tool. Most often it has one main compartment for the device itself and several recesses for equipment.
  • organizers - boxes designed to accommodate a large number of different sizes of tools. They have many compartments, models with modular partitions deserve attention, which, for the convenience of the owner, can be rearranged from one place to another.
  • professional tool - a special kind of cases with certain seats for specific tools, more resistant to falls and adverse environmental conditions.
  • non-professional tool - consists of boxes of both small and large enough sizes with many compartments and niches for various kinds of tools, often these are cases in the form of bags.

There are many tool box companies such as stanley, fit– american firms, keter- no less popular Israeli company, Spanish company tayg, german Kroft and many others, differing in quality and price of products.

As an alternative to all these firms - the opportunity to make a tool box with your own hands. You can thus save on cost and get a completely competitive option that meets exactly your requirements.

Types of boxes

Tool boxes made in home workshops are mostly made of wood and come in a variety of shapes. Boxes of the classical form - "bast basket" are popular and easy to manufacture. in the second and third place - a box in the form of a chest - a container, and in the form of a case.

Materials for making a tool box

  • wooden boards 15-25 mm thick
  • round wooden rod of the desired length
  • self-tapping screws, wood glue, sandpaper for cleaning surfaces
  • a set of tools - a grinder, an electric drill, an electric jigsaw, a screwdriver
  • measuring instruments - ruler
  • screwdriver, hammer

Manufacturing steps

Using this technology, it is possible to manufacture boxes of more complex designs, creating the required number of compartments and niches due to partitions.

Using the same technology, it is possible to manufacture a closed box, which is more reliable and convenient for transporting tools.

Additional steps in the manufacture of a box with a lid

For self-manufacturing of currently popular transformer boxes you will have to break your head more, but it is quite possible to implement this idea.

To do this, with the help of computer programs, you need to develop the design you want, but a set of necessary elements that can be purchased in special stores will help you translate it into reality. The number and complexity of the selected elements depends on your requirements for the box. Assembly can be done on a wooden base using aluminum strips and corners. Fasteners are made with rivets.

If you are a purposeful and creative person, then the process making a tool box will not be difficult, but by seeing the fruits of this work, you will increase your self-esteem and save budget funds.

A large and convenient tool box is the dream of any master. It is understandable, because in such a repository you can compactly put all your tools. They are not so expensive today, so one of the options is to purchase in a store or create a similar masterpiece yourself. Which option would be acceptable for you? Of course, the purchased one has a certain size, but there can be much more tools than can fit in it. But one way or another, you have to put up with it or run to the store again and buy a new one. It’s quite another thing to do it yourself: I picked up the right material and calculated it for all the available tools and even with a perspective. Conveniently? Most likely, you will agree with this argument. Therefore, we will talk in this article about how to make such a box yourself at home.

What HE should be?

If this is a home box, then it can be a regular box with a handle. Well, if you, for example, are a plumber, then it is clear that you will need a box that is more functional, roomy and durable. This role will be successfully performed by the organizer. However, in this article, as an example, we will consider a simple home option - a box with a handle. So, we will assume that we have decided on the type of box where we will keep all the tools we need, or almost all.

Where do we start? First, let's select the material. It can be plywood, wood or even metal, then we will make the calculations. Only then can you start drawing up a detailed drawing. This can be done in the classic way, that is, on whatman paper using a well-sharpened pencil, ruler, compass, square, etc.

The non-classical way is with the help of a special computer program. "AutoCAD" and "Compass" are just "sharpened" to make a professional accurate drawing. The advantage of such programs is that they will help to avoid errors in the calculation and, moreover, it is possible to preview in advance what you will get out of all this.

These programs will only serve you well if you have certain skills in working with them.

The material was selected, and now for the manufacture it remains to assemble all the tools that we will need. Of course, the types of tools are individual. It all depends on what kind of box you want. They, too, are different. But, one way or another, there are universal tools. They are always needed. This is the measuring tool:

  • fasteners;
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver.

Let's start manufacturing

We take the traditional material - edged board of coniferous species. As for processing, this is the simplest and most affordable material, which also has good strength properties.

As planned, it will be a wooden box, and our task now is to materialize the drawing itself into a material. For this case, we need a ruler and a pencil. After that, we mark up on the material and cut out the components of the product with a hacksaw or electric jigsaw. If we planned the usual non-closing option, then we need to make five planes: four walls and a bottom.

When assembling, it is usually best to use wood glue. The joints must be cleaned, and only then apply glue, after which we firmly compress the parts together. Be sure to let the glue dry completely.

After this operation, we can additionally strengthen the box with fasteners - self-tapping screws. Fixed. Now we need to make a handle. It can be an ordinary wooden lath, which we need to nail or screw to the upper edges of the side elements.

Organizer

Following the principle "from simple to complex", let's talk about the organizer. It is clear that in the open-top box, which was written above, you can put a large tool: a hand saw, a hammer, a mallet, and much, much more.

And where to put small things? There are all sorts of screws, bolts, nuts, etc. This small fastener tends to get lost or not be at the very moment when it is especially needed. This is where we need an organizer.

As already noted, this type of boxes, by their design, is the most functional in operation. What does he represent? It's kind of like a box on a box, or rather, a lot of drawers in one section for storing not only medium-sized tools, but also every little thing. Of course, at first glance, it may seem that it will not be easy to make such a design. But it only seems to be. Basically, difficulties arise in the manufacture of the sliding mechanism. Everything else is much easier to do. Now in more detail about manufacturing technology.

  1. We start by making the main body. It should be open and deep so that we can put various medium-sized tools (hammers, wrenches, etc.) into it. We can say that the design of this main body is quite simple, but in essence it is an ordinary box that can be divided into several sections using vertical planes.
  2. The next stage is the manufacture of 4 smaller boxes. You probably noticed that the number of these sections is even, and we mentally divide them into pairs, trying to adhere to the dimensions of their lower large counterpart during manufacture. They will be stacked on top of each other. One pair of boxes (upper) will be with lids. They will be either folding on piano hinges, or retractable like a Soviet school pencil case.
  3. Now it remains to connect these boxes together. We will do this with the help of metal connecting strips. We need 6 pieces. On the one hand, and also on the other hand, we hook on one plate (short) to connect the two lower boxes - small and large. Two more plates (long) will connect all the boxes together. And, finally, the longest bar will act as a handle, and at the same time connect the two upper floors of the organizer. As you can see, there is nothing complicated here, and the sliding mechanism is utterly simplified, as shown in the example of a metal organizer - the principle is the same.

Making a metal case for tools

Now let's talk about a homemade metal case. Don't jump to the conclusion that it's impossible. Of course, only an experienced locksmith can make an organizer out of metal on his own and with special tools and the appropriate material. Factory-made metal boxes are usually made from lightweight metals such as aluminum so that the box itself is not heavy. At home, working with aluminum is difficult.

In principle, a metal box for is loudly said. Rather, an ordinary box will be made of metal. The material that is needed to make such a box is ordinary soft galvanized steel (about 0.3 mm thick). From the tools we need:

  • square;
  • caliper (marking);
  • sharpened small core or marker;
  • ruler;
  • a hammer;
  • anvil (wide metal bar);
  • file;
  • pliers.

Then everything follows the same scenario: drawing, markup. The most interesting thing is that all this can be done directly on the galvanized sheet using a sharpened core (or marker), whatever you like. We then mark with a marker on the metal those places that we have to remove.

After that, we proceed to trimming using scissors for metal.

After trimming everything superfluous, we get such a complex geometric figure (“winged rectangle”).

Now let's work a little blacksmiths. For this case, we have an anvil, and, tapping with a hammer, gently bend the edges of our workpiece. It is better to do this not randomly, but in a certain order.

First we bend one sidewall, and then we bend the other.

Now the sides in turn.

After that, let's do the bending of the protruding petals. They will make the structure itself more rigid, and it will not “play”.

Pliers can be used to wrap protruding parts on the top of the box.

After such manipulations, you should carefully walk around the entire product with a hammer, straightening it.

In this case, it turned out to be a small box. But after all, according to this principle, you can make a similar one - more, and in the end you get such a metal tool box.

So, if you want, everything is possible.

We hope that this article will be useful for you, dear readers. If your tools are in order, then supplement it with the manufacture of a regular tool box. If your instruments do not have a permanent “place of residence”, then consider building a two- or even three-story “transformer house” for it. Try to do this, and your tool will always be in place, and you yourself will be pleased to use a product made by yourself in your household.
