When installing plastic windows, many do not even suspect that there are special, simple and concise in appearance, platbands for them. And it’s completely in vain - when placing an order for the installation of such window systems, it is quite possible to immediately coordinate the installation of these elements.

However, this is by no means the only possible solution to the problem. Platbands for plastic windows can also be made of wood and decorated with artistic carvings. If this option is used to decorate the facade of the house, then the window openings will be framed in the same way as Russian masters of wooden architecture have done for centuries.

No need to think that the platbands perform an exclusively decorative role. In fact, they are very functional, and are designed to close the gaps between the window frame and the wall, which in our time are most often sealed with mounting foam. The platbands protect this filling from negative external influences, such as ultraviolet rays that destroy the polyurethane foam, direct moisture, etc.

Platbands and their functions

Briefly, the process of installing a plastic window is as follows:

  • If old windows are installed in the openings, they are dismantled, and the vacant opening is cleaned of insulating materials and dirt.
  • Then, a plastic frame is inserted into the opening, which is aligned with the building level and fixed on the walls in several places with special metal elements - anchors or plates (underframes). Double-glazed windows are installed and fixed with special glazing beads.
  • Further, all the gaps left between the frame and the wall are sealed - filled with mounting foam, closed with special sealing and hydrophobic tapes, etc.
  • After the foam hardens, its excess is cut off. Then puttying and installation of slopes is carried out from above.
  • And, finally, platbands are installed, which close the gaps filled with foam from the outside or from the inside.

Self-installation of a plastic window is not an easy task.

When installing such a system, it is necessary to provide for many nuances. The process is described in detail in a special publication of our portal.

The standard equipment of a metal-plastic window with double-glazed windows, as a rule, does not include platbands, especially since these finishing elements are not suitable in all cases. For example, if the windows are very recessed into the wall, then you need to choose very narrow platbands, or install them around the window opening. Moreover, in the second version, they will serve exclusively as a decorative element, therefore, they are installed only at will.

However, it should be noted that platbands have their own advantages, which attract many owners of private houses:

  • Accuracy and aesthetic appearance of windows.
  • In its own way - a certain exclusivity of the design of plastic standard windows, since, nevertheless, most owners do not use these elements of facade decoration.
  • And the functionality already mentioned is the protection of the sealed gap from the influence of the external environment.

It should be noted that there are platbands designed for finishing windows and from the inside. Such products are usually intended only for decorative design, therefore, they are purchased mainly in cases where the interior of the room needs to be kept in a certain style. For example, such a design is suitable for a "rustic Russian" style or "country" - both of these trends have been actively coming into fashion lately.

Varieties of platbands in shape and material of manufacture

Platbands for plastic windows can be of various types and profiles, made using a variety of materials:

  • Flat slats made of plastic, aluminium, polyurethane and wood.

The simplest - platbands in the form of flat plastic strips

Most often, platbands that are flat in shape are used to frame plastic windows, since they are simply mounted, create a neat look, are easy to maintain and have the most affordable price of all existing configurations.

  • Carved platbands, which are made of plastic or natural wood.

This version of the parts are made, mainly, by individual order from wood, and therefore are very expensive. Plastic options for carved window frames are not easy to find in hardware stores, since their mass production is far from being organized everywhere and not on a large enough scale.

  • Shaped platbands can have a smooth semicircular shape or almost flat, but with a relief pattern in the form of stripes of different depths. This type is produced from almost all of the listed materials.

  • Profile architraves are made of plastic, wood, polyurethane or aluminium. They have a certain shape in cross section, sometimes made in a rather intricate configuration.

The peculiarity of profile architraves is a complex shape in cross section

The choice of platband according to the material of manufacture

It is important to choose the right platband, which would fit in its appearance not only to the window frame, but also to the material of the walls of the facade or its external decoration.

  • Plastic options have the most affordable price and a very aesthetic appearance, however, they do not differ in too long service life.

Usually, all manufacturers have in their product range and platbands of the same color as the profile for the frames. Therefore, when placing an order, you can immediately ask what types of decorative platbands can be offered.

As a rule, plastic platbands are made in different colors, but the most popular option is white. After it, “on the ladder of popularity” is brown-chocolate, and other colors follow, which are used much less frequently. Therefore, not all window manufacturers can find a profile of the desired rare shade.

The color of the frames is usually matched to the shades of the walls or the roof of the house, and sometimes the design of the facade is carried out on contrasting principles.

Plastic framing options are produced in sets that are assembled into a single casing on site, or in a finished, solid form, in the likeness of a frame, which remains only to be fixed around the perimeter of the window opening.

There are special plastic profiles for platbands, which are mounted on the wall and snap into place with a special locking joint on the slopes installed around the window. This option allows not only to create a neat frame, but also to securely connect the slopes with the decorative frame of the opening, without any gaps.

  • Platbands made of polyurethane also deserve attention, as they are often used to decorate windows.

Profiles made of this material can have a different relief shape, they are light in weight and quite simply adjusted in size and mounted on a window opening or even directly on a window.

Polyurethane framing options are resistant to moisture and sunlight, so they will last a very long time.

This material can be coated with paint, so if you decide to change the facade design, there will be no problems with changing the color of these elements. When painted, polyurethane becomes even more resistant to external influences, acquires an aesthetic appearance and is very easy to clean from dust deposits.

Platbands are also made from expanded polystyrene, which usually have additional internal reinforcement. They are somewhat inferior in quality to polyurethane foam, but they can also be used for both external and internal decoration of window openings with plastic windows.

  • Platbands made of natural wood are very durable and beautiful, provided they are well treated with protective compounds. Such parts, with high-quality performance, have a fairly high cost.

Wooden platbands are, of course, a "classic" facade decoration.

Wooden frames for plastic windows are perfect for a house that has wooden walls or finished with a material that authentically imitates wood. As mentioned above, wooden architraves with figured carvings are most often made by hand and ordered individually for each style of the chosen facade design.

Wooden options can be painted in various colors, which are selected depending on other shades present in the overall ensemble, so as to achieve harmony with the facade decoration and the color background of the roof of the house.

The disadvantage of wooden platbands is that they need to be painted much more often than polyurethane - on wood, the paint is more prone to fading.

Installing trim on windows

Platbands are installed in different ways. It depends both on the material of manufacture and on the place of installation, since the window can be recessed into the wall or be in the same external plane with it.

  • If the window is deepened into the wall, then they are first mounted around it, which will close the unsightly sections of the wall around the frame that can spoil the overall aesthetic appearance.

To do this, a special plastic starting profile is fixed to the window frame, into which the slope panel will be inserted.

The figure clearly shows the principle of installing a slope in the starting profile, and then a plastic casing.

To join the platbands at the corners, their edges are cut at an angle of 45 degrees. The cuts will be neat and accurate if you follow some recommendations:

- sawing off should be carried out using a special template - a miter box;

Smooth joints of platbands in the corners are ensured by using a special device for cutting them - a miter box

- if the miter box is not used, and the casing is sawn off in a horizontal position, then washed down should be carried out from the outside;

  • If the platbands have special grooves for fastening them with slopes, then they are simply installed with spikes in them and snap into place.

Video: an example of installing plastic trim - flashings on a PVC window

  • In the case of fixing the platbands to the wall surface separately from the slopes, the prepared parts are tried on the window opening, and their location is marked on the wall plane. After that, “liquid nails” or “Moment” glue is applied to the back of the trim panels, and the frame is glued according to the markings. The joints at the corners are also glued together with glue.

Application of "liquid nails" on the back of the casing

Wooden platbands are fixed to the walls with dowels or self-tapping screws. To do this, through holes are first drilled in wooden parts, which then expand somewhat from the front side so that the head of the fastener is hidden in the thickness of the wood. According to the markings on the wall, a hole is made where the dowel is installed, and then a self-tapping screw is screwed into it through the casing. The remaining hole in the platband, in which the head of the self-tapping screw “hid”, is sealed with epoxy resin mixed with fine sawdust. Such a putty will make the installation sites of fasteners almost invisible.

Manufacture of platbands

Some craftsmen prefer to make carved platbands on their own. They are cut according to a pre-made template, through which the pattern is transferred to a perfectly processed high-quality board.

You can also make platbands in the form of even panels, which will be very simple to make, but in this case, the board should be even and smooth. It is treated, and then with water-repellent compounds. Sometimes the wood is darkened with a stain, and covered with yacht moisture-resistant varnish on top.

The choice of wood for platbands

Properly selected wood will greatly facilitate and speed up the work on platbands, so the choice of material must be taken seriously.

It is best to choose wood that is easy to process. So, linden, alder and aspen are well suited for cutting out complex lacy elements of the casing. Do not choose coniferous trees:

- for example, spruce has a large number of knots, which can significantly spoil the pattern;

- pine is an excessively fragile material on which chips may appear during operation;

- cedar and larch, in principle, are well suited for long-term operation of platbands in outdoor conditions, however, they have a very high structural density, so they are difficult to process.

The wood should be moderately dried so that when it dries, the finished parts, on which a lot of effort will be spent, do not deform or crack.

The thickness of the boards for platbands is selected depending on the height of the relief pattern, and can vary from 10 to 40 mm. Therefore, before buying material, you need to decide on the choice of ornament.

If there are small protruding elements in the relief, then it is recommended to make and process them separately, and then paste them in the place provided for them.

If the platbands are not supposed to be painted, then you need to choose boards with a beautiful textured pattern, without a large number of knots, having an even “healthy” structure of one shade, which will be in perfect harmony with the design of the entire facade.

Casing dimensions

Calculations are made as follows:

  • The height and width of the window opening are measured - these will be the parameters of the inner perimeter of the casing.
  • Then, from the line of the opening, the width of the platband is measured to determine how much it will cover the wall. This is especially important when the window frame is in the same plane as the wall.
  • The height of the platband should be equal to the height of the window opening plus two widths of the platband panel. Thus, the calculation is carried out if the horizontal upper and lower bars of the created frame will have the same width as the vertical ones. If the horizontal panels are planned to be made wider, then the vertical ones should have a height equal to the height of the window opening plus the width of the upper and lower sides of the casing.
  • The size of the sides of the platband will also depend on which corner joint will be chosen, so before you start cutting the board, you need to carefully consider all the nuances.

Production and processing of wooden platband

The selected pattern is applied to the prepared boards. As already mentioned, it is best to carry out this process using a pre-cut stencil.

If there is no experience in cutting out drawings, then it is better to choose not the most difficult drawing.

When the drawing is completely transferred to the board, you can start cutting it out. For work, an electric jigsaw is used. In each closed section of the drawing, a through hole is drilled with a drill, into which a vertical jigsaw file will be inserted, and from this place this fragment of the board will be carefully, slowly, cut out.

When cutting out a curly pattern, special care and discretion will be required - any awkward movement can ruin all the work.

In addition to a jigsaw, you can use a milling cutter for work. It will help smooth out sharp corners in a through drawing, and it is more convenient to cut out some relief elements with this tool.

In order for the pattern on the casing to look aesthetically pleasing and professional, it must be processed with sandpaper, first with medium grain (140 ÷ 180), and then with fine grain (220 ÷ 400). Processing is carried out manually, and to make it less laborious, you must first work well with a milling cutter.

If individual parts of the relief were made separately, then they are fixed with wood glue after all surfaces have been processed. When the glue dries, the entire casing, including all relief elements, is impregnated with antiseptic compounds and also left to dry.

The final stage of work is the coating of all surfaces with a waterproof protective composition for wood. The best option for external details would be to use yacht varnish. Naturally, if desired, or if the facade color scheme is observed, the platbands can be coated with paint of the desired color.

Figured platbands will help to "revive" the look of standard plastic windows

If there is a desire to try your hand at making this facade decorative detail, then it is best to start practicing on pieces of the board, to “fill your hand”. Then, when it starts to work, you can go directly to . Detailed instructions can be found in a dedicated portal publication.

In conclusion, we can summarize that no matter what type of platbands is chosen, they will make the appearance of the facade of the house more aesthetic and neat. In addition, these details will create additional protection for the gaps hermetically sealed with insulation between the window frame and the wall.

How difficult is it to install platbands on the doors and is it possible to do it yourself if you have never encountered such work? In principle, a door trim, for a door made of wood, plastic or metal, differs only in material, the technology is the same everywhere and further, you will find out: what are the trim, what is needed to install them, and most importantly, how to do it all yourself.

Door decoration is an important moment in the design of any room.

Before preparing the tool and buying accessories, let's figure out what kind of door trims exist.

Common Materials

Wooden platbands on the door are a classic finishing option; there are both budget models made of pine or linden, as well as elite species such as oak, beech or overseas wenge wood.

Working with wood is more difficult, since the material is alive, which means it is subject to temperature and humidity deformations. If you decide to give preference to this option, then keep in mind: the wood must be dry and preferably impregnated with an antiseptic.

No matter how beautiful the platband from a freshly sawn forest looks, after six months it can lead or unpleasant cracks appear.

Natural wood is deservedly considered a classic.

The second and currently the most popular contender in our rating is MDF. Door frames almost 70% of consumers choose from MDF. The material is completely environmentally friendly, because the array is glued together not due to synthetic additives, but due to the high content of natural lignin glue in the tree.

Swelling in conditions of high humidity is considered a weak point of MDF, but in order for the planks to deteriorate, the humidity must be really high, so the cladding cannot be mounted in the steam room or on the front doors from the street. A kitchen and even a bathroom in a city apartment are quite suitable for installing MDF.

In the line of MDF planks there are platbands pasted over with veneer (a thin cut of natural wood), this cladding is absolutely no different from high-quality wooden products.

Facing from MDF is a successful combination of the best price and high quality.

Gone are the days when plastic products could be identified at a glance. Good plastic platbands from the same MDF can only be distinguished by a specialist, and most importantly, the price for this product is quite affordable, plus installing plastic with your own hands is much easier.

In addition, plastic is indifferent to any humidity, high-quality models tolerate temperature extremes and direct sunlight well. Perhaps the only place where it is not recommended to put plastic is a steam room, such a ban is explained by the fact that many synthetic compounds begin to break down at temperatures above 70ºС.

Plastic platbands have a beautiful appearance and high performance.

There are still metal cladding on the market. As a rule, metal is used only for installation on the street, but this is a very narrow niche, because the platband on the front door is often not required, since its “duties” are performed by the supporting outer frame of the metal door, and now they practically do not put wood at the entrance.

A few words about the tool

In order to qualitatively install any door platbands, they need to be cut accurately, evenly and without chips, and for this it is desirable to have a miter saw on the frame, and the frame must be rotated and fixed at a certain angle.

Miter saw on the bed.

If your plans do not include the purchase of trimming, then you can get by with a hacksaw, but some skill is needed here, since without experience it is very easy to chip along the edge.

From the auxiliary tool you need:

  • A hammer;
  • Plumb;
  • Level;
  • Roulette;
  • Pliers;
  • Pencil.

The method of cutting with a miter box.

From the materials you will need:

  • Special finishing studs with a small cap;
  • Glue "Liquid nails" or polyurethane foam, plus a gun for a tube;
  • Masking tape.

Mounting foam is more convenient to apply with a gun.

How to install platbands with your own hands

There are 2 ways to mount such a cladding: oblique joining of planks at 45º and direct joining of planks at 90º. In addition, there are serious differences in the installation of wooden (MDF) platbands and plastic products, but about everything in turn.

Method number 1. Installation with cutting corners

This installation method is suitable for both flat or semicircular strips, and for figured architraves. The oblique cut organically fits into the overall interior of the door and this lining looks great.

Angled planks.

Whichever method you choose, work begins with trimming the edges of the planks, in other words, you need to cut off a few millimeters from each edge. If there is a miter saw, then you can cut it in a package, all at once.

Trimming the edges of the platbands.

Mounting foam is usually blown around the perimeter of the door frame, so you need to carefully cut it off, it is more convenient to use a removable blade from a mounting knife here.

We start the markup with a bar that will be installed from the side of the door hinges. A couple of millimeters are left between the bar and the canopies, so that when opening the loops they do not rub against the casing.

Important: the platbands are attached after the doors are installed, and the walls, ceilings and floors are finished, but before the skirting boards are mounted. Planks should rest against the floor, and not against the baseboard.

Trying on and marking the bar.

The mark is placed on the lower edge of the future cut. All other strips are marked similarly. After marking, do not forget to number all the details.

If you have a miter saw, you need to rotate the tool table at 45º, attach the bar to the stop and cut.

Corner trimming.

If there is no trimming, then 45º can be marked with a square and a pencil. To do this, draw a transverse line from the previously marked point.

Cross marking at a right angle.

It’s even easier with the top bar, where you apply it to the two side bars, as shown in the diagram below, and mark it out in fact. With this approach, errors and gaps in the corners are practically excluded, even if the corner is marked not quite correctly, that is, not at 45º, it will still fit perfectly.

There is a little trick here: first you need to nail both side planks on 2 - 3 studs, and then put the top one under them and mark them.

When everything is marked and cut off, you can proceed to the installation. We will nail the platband to the door frame with carnations, and to fix it on the wall we use mounting foam. To do this, simply put a strip of foam on the edge of the bar.

If you decide to glue the platbands only on liquid nails, then this composition has an interesting feature. First, the glue is applied to the bar, after that the bar is pressed against the base and immediately comes off. Then you need to wait about 5 minutes, so that the glue is slightly weathered, and only after that you can “plant” completely.

The top bar is attached first, and you need to nail it in the center. Then, when you begin to install the sides, you will have the opportunity to slightly adjust the top, if necessary. When the whole “constructor” is folded, the planks can be finally fixed, the studs are hammered in in increments of 150 - 200 mm.

The final touch you will have is fixing the planks with studs from the end. To do this, slightly bend both strips from the wall and hammer in the carnation.

Fixing the platband in the corner.

If the corner did not converge quite evenly, then the gap can be covered with acrylic putty or special furniture wax to match the trim. Although the entry points of the studs are almost imperceptible, this is still annoying for many people, so the nails can also be covered over.

Method number 2. Docking planks at right angles

This method is justified only if you decide to install a curly capital on top. Then the capital itself is nailed or glued first, and then you need to try on, cut off and attach two side strips.

The upper capital will greatly improve the appearance of the door.

Often, those amateur craftsmen who do not want to mess around with cutting corners at 45º join the planks at right angles. There is nothing wrong with this, but such a lining does not look so impressive.

There are no special tricks and secrets here. The only thing we can advise you is to direct the cuts of the two side strips up so that they are not visible, and insert the top strip between the two side strips. As in the photo below.

Docking at a right angle will look better if the top bar is inserted between the side bars.

If you want to join planks with rounded edges at right angles, then it is better to cut the top plank at an inward angle so that the cut edge lies on the rounding. In this case, the end of the bar will be invisible.

Installation of plastic platbands

High-quality plastic trim may not visually differ from natural wood.

The plastic construction consists of 2 parts: a base with mounting grooves is attached to the edge of the door, and then the front part of the casing is put on this base. To beautifully dock the front parts of the structure, the set includes special docking gaskets.

Docking gaskets for plastic platbands.

Plastic platbands are quite flexible and if the base is fixed on a curved wall, then it will go around the bumps and it will be problematic to put on the front part, so you first need to align the walls around the doorway, and only then fix the plastic.

By the way, hard planks, MDF or wood, can be mounted on curved walls. True, then you will need to putty those places where the bar moves away from the wall. It certainly looks very mediocre, but still better than holes under the trim.

Often, plastic platbands are chosen because there is a cable channel inside such a structure and you can hide the wiring in it. But there is a nuance here: do not try to hide a high-voltage cable in the casing, according to the norms of SNiP, this is strictly prohibited. Only low-voltage cables, such as antenna or communications, may be laid here.

Mounting the base on self-tapping screws.

As in previous cases, the bar is attached first from the side of the loops. Usually, the carrier bar is fixed with self-tapping screws with plastic dowels, but no one bothers you to put it, for example, on liquid nails.

The lower load-bearing strips need to be measured and cut very accurately, because any mistake at this stage will lead to the fact that your upper front strips may simply not converge. Plastic is mounted only with a 45º cut, installation at a right angle is not provided here.

After the side base is fixed, a front plate is put on it and a connecting gasket is inserted from above, then you can proceed to attaching the base under the upper casing.

When the whole structure is assembled and you are convinced that all joints fit exactly and nothing is mowed anywhere, you can start laying low-voltage cables inside the casing.

Laying the cable in the cable channel of the plastic casing.

Conclusion

As you can see, if you have the tool and a great desire, then you can easily and quickly install platbands on the door with your own hands. We also recommend watching the video in this article, there are a lot of subtleties that you would like to know about.

The general appearance of the planks is usually rectangular, but the shape varies depending on the type of cut:

  • Flat (straight). The surface is flat, at the end it looks like a rectangle. They are installed at right angles to each other (pictured below).
  • Figured. They differ in the presence of a certain relief (in the form of rollers) on the surface. The vertical pattern gives the doorway an original look.
  • Radius (semicircular). The surface is convex. Depending on the design decision, it can be symmetrical in the shape of a crescent or slightly offset to one side of the plank, resembling a falling drop.

Options for using platbands

When choosing, consider the location of the doors in the room:

  • For interior any materials can be used.
  • On the front door inside the apartment- metal or plastic, characterized by increased resistance to mechanical stress.

The photo shows unusual mirror trim in the interior of the bedroom.

Trim material

Due to the variety of materials, you can arrange an opening in any room, it is only important to take into account the features of each of them:

  • Plastic. PVC is used for production. Most often used on doors made of the same material. PVC is not afraid of moisture, prevents mold and is often equipped with cable channels. Large selection of colors.
  • Wooden. They are made of spliced solid wood (common furniture materials are smooth eco-veneer, veneer), do not deform over time. Easily match in tone and texture with wooden doors, varied in patterns and textures, environmentally friendly. Baguette platbands are made from natural wood - birch, oak. The only negative is that they are sensitive to moisture and are afraid of temperature changes.
  • MDF. The most frequent companion for MDF doors is light and easy to install. Accurately repeat the shade and texture of the canvas.
  • Gypsum. They are used as an addition to the existing gypsum decor in the room - stucco molding for the ceiling or walls. Painted gypsum requires careful use, as it easily crumbles upon impact.
  • Metal. They are used both for decorating entrance doors and interior doors - glass in a high-tech interior.

The photo shows a corridor decorated in a classic style. Doors and platbands form a single ensemble.

Regardless of the material, the platbands are installed strictly perpendicular to the floor.

In the photo, the metal frame perfectly complements the glass doors in the hallway.

Trim colors

Traditionally, the color is selected according to the color of the door and the overall color scheme. But you can always stop at the basic colors:

  • White.
  • Wenge.
  • Black.
  • Brown.
  • Grey.

In the photo, the door and platbands are made in the same color scheme.

As a modern solution - a contrasting color of the door and a gray, dark or light shade of the planks - this combination looks original and stylish (example in the photo).

Design and forms of decorative platbands

Making an accent in the interior is quite simple if you choose the right shape:

Narrow

They are chosen when the door is very narrow and elongated, when the corner of the room and neighboring walls are close (as in the photo), if there is a niche above the door. Often, they are purchased in order to save money for the design of utility rooms.

carved

Decorated with carved patterns on natural wood.

wide

They create a special tone in the interior and, unlike other types, are not necessarily combined with the color of the door, the combination with skirting boards is much more important. Ideal for paneled doors.

semicircular

Frame semicircular openings, arches. Dimensions are individual, most often fastened with telescopic fasteners.

With patterns

A beautiful decorative effect obtained when using patina even on a simple material. This technique emphasizes and enhances the classic interior. Used in such styles as Provence, Baroque, Venetian.

The photo shows a bathroom with bright decorative elements in the form of a wall panel and patterned trim.

antique

Solid wood, with a texture that imitates aged wood. Suitable for country style, loft, Provence.

The photo shows the doorway in the bathroom with an aged effect.

Capitals

Additional polyurethane overlays on the upper part of the doorway - used to decorate door structures in a classic style (due to the overlay, the trim becomes double). They perform an exclusively aesthetic function.

Options for decorating platbands in the interior of rooms

Depends on the room in which the doors are installed. The reason for this is the different interior design, as well as the peculiarity of the climate inside the room.

  • Hallway. This is where the front door to the apartment is most often located. Platbands, a door slope to the floor and a threshold are installed from metal, natural wood or dense plastic.
  • Bathroom. The bathroom is a place of high humidity. Given this feature, you need to choose ceramic or plastic materials.
  • Toilet. As a rule, a bathroom is a small space in which narrow platbands made of ordinary plastic, wood or ceramics can act as a corner plinth.
  • Kitchen. You can use different materials.

In the photo there is an entrance door in a small hallway - the design of the doorway with narrow metal trim was chosen.

There are no restrictions on the choice of material for decorating the doorway to the kitchen. It all depends on the design project and the taste of the owner.

Photos in various interior styles

In the design of modern interiors, different style techniques easily coexist. So in the design of an apartment in the style of minimalism, it is not at all necessary to accurately select the colors of the door leaf and platbands (photo on the right). And in Provence or country style, classic beige trims will perfectly complement the interior with a door in light colors.

Photo gallery

Platbands have long ceased to be just functional items, but have become full-fledged and irreplaceable participants in the interior, with their own character and unique properties.

When buying a door leaf, box, fittings, the seller will offer the buyer to purchase additional items. The platbands on the door will help to hide the gaps between the box and the doorway. The extensions will cover the protruding parts of the wall if its width is greater than that of the box. In order not to make a mistake when choosing elements that close the gaps between the box and the door, you need to understand their varieties and know what material to buy.

Door frames are divided into two groups:

  1. constructive purpose. In cases where the box is 1-5 cm smaller than the doorway, or it cannot hide the protruding wall at the edges of the opening, wooden, metal or plastic planks can cope with the problem of closing ugly places.
  2. Decorative purpose. Planks, which can be completed with door frames, can play the role of a smooth transition between the box and the doorway. Framing the opening with wooden planks is considered a necessary detail in a classic interior.

Decorative platbands are divided by shape. The choice of form will depend on the purchased canvas:

  1. Flat - classic planks made of plastic, wood or metal. They have a rectangular section.
  2. Rounded. These are rounded models. They are semi-circular or tear-shaped. In rare cases, they may be called radius.
  3. Curly. Most often, such models are used for decorative purposes. They have a complex shape, consisting of several waves, grooves or bends.

There are two groups of door frames depending on their functionality. The first includes classic monolithic structures. The second group includes models made mainly of plastic. Their feature is the presence of channels for laying cables. You can hide the wires inside the decorative element.

Above are the main types of platbands that can be purchased at hardware and furniture stores. If desired, you can order models in your own sizes and shapes.

Materials for the manufacture of platbands

Platbands on an entrance, interroom door can be made of various materials. Each of them has a number of features, advantages and disadvantages. To choose high-quality additional structures for the door frame, you need to familiarize yourself with each material separately.

Wood

Wood is an environmentally friendly material. Planks are not made from solid boards (solid), but from individual slats. Thus, the tree is less deformed by temperature changes and changes in humidity levels. They look good in houses made of timber. Carved models look beautiful, but are much more expensive than platbands without manual decoration.

To appreciate this material, you need to understand its strengths and weaknesses. In the manufacture of planks, pine wood is used. Conifers have many advantages.

Advantages:

  1. Environmental friendliness.
  2. The tree is easily processed by impregnations, paints, varnishes.
  3. Easy installation. Platbands made of wood are fixed on the box with finishing nails. Cut them at the right angle, anyone who does not have additional skills can install them.
  4. Reliability and durability.

Disadvantages:

  • wood is less durable than plastic or metal;
  • afraid of prolonged exposure to moisture.

You can restore the tree to its original appearance and protect it from the effects of environmental factors by covering it with a layer of varnish.

Ecoveneer

The concepts of veneering and lamination are perceived by people as one and the same. However, during lamination, a thin protective film of plastic is applied to the products. Veneering involves applying a thin layer of more expensive wood species to wood. The base of the interior canvas can be made of MDF, chipboard, and then covered with veneer. Now in hardware stores you can find platbands covered with eco-veneer.

Advantages:

  1. Ecoveneer resembles expensive wood species (oak, ash, cedar). The door front looks great.
  2. Low price.
  3. Durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Disadvantages:

  1. Prolonged exposure to moisture has a devastating effect on the eco-veneer.
  2. Additional processing is required to protect against the effects of destructive environmental factors.

Due to the wide selection and low price, eco-veneer models are very popular.

PVC

Plastic strips are versatile and practical. They can be installed on PVC doors, wooden and iron boxes. The plastic on the outside can be painted, matte, glossy or have a wood texture.

Advantages:

  1. Not afraid of water, direct sunlight, mechanical stress.
  2. Dirt can be washed off with a damp cloth.
  3. Durability is greater than that of wood, veneer, lamination or eco-veneer.

Disadvantages:

  • plastic is not suitable for all interior styles;
  • it is more difficult to mount than wooden platbands.

In terms of price / quality ratio, plastic is considered the best material for the production of window frames, door frames.

Metal

In the manufacture of metal models, aluminum or steel is used. It is rare to find models made of iron. This is due to the fact that iron is susceptible to corrosion and requires additional processing.

Advantages:

  • non-combustible material;
  • durability and reliability is higher than other materials.

Disadvantages:

  • it is more difficult to mount in comparison with wood and plastic;
  • scratches and dents are hard to fix.

Metal bars are easy to make. To do this, you need a sheet of high-quality metal, a grinder, a marking tool.

Polyurethane

Foamed plastic has gained popularity in the last 5 years. Skirting boards, elements for decorating walls, ceilings, structures for slopes are made from it. Polyurethane is similar to styrofoam, but has different characteristics.

Advantages:

  • suitable for various interior styles;
  • can be covered with decorative compositions;
  • resistant to temperature changes.

Disadvantages:

  • fragility - easily damaged by mechanical stress;
  • high price;
  • difficulties during installation;

Before installing polyurethane elements, it is necessary to accurately measure and cut. This must be done carefully so as not to violate the integrity of the material.

For cuts at the right angle, a template (miter box) is used.

Standard platband sizes

There are GOSTs that regulate the standard sizes of platbands. If there are no problems with the choice of height, then the choice of width can put you in a controversial position.

According to official documents, the standard width is 7-10 cm. The dimensions prescribed in the GOSTs allow you to buy models that will look harmoniously indoors. In rare cases, architraves of greater width may be needed. Narrow models (3-7 cm) are sold in hardware stores. By length, you can buy a different footage or ask the store to cut the strips to the desired length. The thickness depends on the material.

Mounting methods

Platbands can be divided into two groups, depending on the method of fastening:

  1. Overhead. They are fixed with liquid or finishing nails. Laid on platbands are cut at a right angle or 45 degrees.
  2. Telescopic. They are made of wood or polyurethane. Such models are installed using a thorn-groove system.

Telescopic models are less popular due to the difficulties encountered with cutting corner joints. They should be L-shaped. The advantage of telescopic structures is the absence of attachment points (nails, self-tapping screws).

Design and finishes

The exterior trim of the platbands will depend on the style of the interior in the room. The color is selected depending on the color of the box, door leaf and fittings.

Attention! In addition to applying a solid color, you can diversify the surface with stencil images or patterned carvings.

There are many different types of accessories for door frames. The choice of material will depend on the preferences of the owner of the house. A properly designed box, combined with the canvas, complements and completes the interior of the room.

Back in the days of the inimitable Coco Chanel (using her famous jackets as an example), the world learned that a well-chosen edging can turn a boring thing into a sample of sophistication and style. This technique is still used not only by the creators of clothing, but also by interior designers. You have noticed how carefully the specialists select baguettes, skirting boards and, of course, door frames. If the magic of transforming door panels with the help of platbands has not yet subdued you, be sure to read this article to the end.

What are platbands on the door

Door platbands are strips that frame the door leaf. Initially, they are designed to hide the technological gap between the door frame and the wall, as well as soften the transition between them. But also in terms of design, platbands play a very important role, often emphasizing important features of the chosen interior style.

Photo gallery: platbands in different interior styles

In the Baroque, platbands, like other elements of the interior, must be works of art. Contemporary style advocates strive for simplicity, but do not give up a modest crown. The loft welcomes dark platbands of a simple shape, but light milling will not be superfluous either. Platbands can serve as one of the main components of the solemn atmosphere of the room. Thanks to simple smooth trims to match the walls and doors, the canvases seem hidden

Modern architraves can be supplemented with decorative corner elements and crowns that replace the standard top bar. This decor is usually used in a palace or classical style and looks especially impressive in white.

When choosing the right product, you should pay attention to:

  • stripe width. It should be wide enough to completely cover the gap between the box and the wall, especially if the gap is uneven. The maximum width is taken into account only if the door is located very close to the corner of the room, in such cases it is worth taking a narrow casing;
  • material. Traditionally, the same one is selected as at the door, and is provided by manufacturers in the same collection, but if you wish, you can deviate from the rules. The main thing is not to pick up a plastic or other cheap platband under an expensive door. Even if it looks more spectacular new, then after a couple of years the difference in the wear resistance of materials will be striking;
  • installation method. If you plan to install the architraves yourself, choose lightweight models that can be glued or telescopic architraves. Experienced masters will cope with any kind;
  • design. Smooth platbands will suit the yard in any interior, but they are too boring for the highlight of the room. You can correct the situation with a non-standard color or choose an option with a more interesting profile.

I, like many others, have always been afraid of platbands of non-standard colors and even limited my bold fantasies on the topic of edging the door to white, black, in extreme cases, silver. But after one of the construction projects, I decided to paint the architraves in bright turquoise, linking them at the same time with the ceiling baguette. It's amazing how much more interesting and brighter the white and purple bathroom has become after such an upgrade, and guests are always terribly surprised. At the same time, reactions are usually positive even among hardened lovers of the classics. It seems to me that this happened because the architraves and baguettes are of medium width (turquoise is dosed) and they are tied together with towels (it looks more harmonious this way). I have been enjoying this effect for more than a year and have never regretted this decision. So if you also have wooden architraves at home, you can paste over the perimeter with masking tape and radically transform them without even removing them. The worst thing you risk is having to repaint them back.

Varieties of door frames

If the length of the platband is limited by the dimensions of the door, then the width, texture and material can be almost anything. In modern interior design, it is not even necessary to match the color of the door leaf and platbands, the main thing is that the latter go well with the skirting boards.

The tandem of skirting boards and platbands, used in contrast to the door leaf, looks very impressive and unusual.

Classification by type of material

On sale you can find:

  • wooden platbands on the door - the most standard and familiar material. They are usually made from a spliced array to prevent the possibility of twisting the bar or cracking it. Of the advantages: safety for health, exact match in tone and texture with wooden doors, low cost, a variety of patterns, the possibility of self-repair and repainting. The disadvantages are familiar to everyone - sensitivity to humidity and temperature extremes, the likelihood of chips and dents on impact. Total: wooden architraves are ideal complete with a wooden door when installed in a room with a stable microclimate;

    In a totally wooden interior, only the same platbands are appropriate.

    Wooden platbands will help to give a more status look to the MDF door, you only need to tint the wood in a similar shade.

  • plastic architraves made of polyurethane (PU) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are usually installed on doors made of the same material. Such a kit is not afraid of moisture, prevents the spread of mold, can be equipped with cable channels for laying wires, and can have a variety of color variations. Among the shortcomings, one can indicate a modest appearance, sensitivity to elevated temperature and ultraviolet radiation, low scratch resistance and the possibility of releasing harmful substances when heated. Ideally, plastic platbands should be used together with entrance doors, so they will show their best qualities to the maximum;

    Patterned plastic architraves may look very nice in the picture, but the actual appearance is usually disappointing. Therefore, if you like any option, try to find it in a building hypermarket and attach it to doors similar to yours. So you can visually evaluate how they fit together.

    Due to the honeycomb structure of plastic architraves, do not mount them in places with a high risk of impact

  • MDF/HDF is the traditional option for MDF doors. They are light and easy to install, optimally repeat the shade and texture of the canvas, and are often supplied with decor in the same style. One of the main drawbacks is the delamination of the decorative coating in the places of cuts, which reduces the service life of the product. The most economical are film-coated MDF platbands, while HDF products veneered with natural wood are considered the best. Now this is one of the most popular types of platbands, due to the popularity of MDF doors;

    Modern methods of wood imitation are so convincing that mounted MDF trims are often difficult to distinguish from wooden ones.

  • plaster platbands on the door are used only in rooms where there are already a lot of ceiling and wall stucco moldings. Surrounded by such decor, wooden and even more so MDF platbands would seem too alien. Plaster products are very beautiful, they can be made seamless, it is easy to order in an individual design and it is easy to tint in any color. But do not forget about the disadvantages: installation can only be entrusted to a specialist, installation is impossible after wallpapering, the material crumbles from impacts, and restoration requires appropriate skills;

    Gypsum portals are often supplied with beautiful corner elements.

  • ceramic door trims are produced specifically for bathrooms, toilets and swimming pools by ceramic tile manufacturers. In such an environment, they look the most harmonious and appropriate, and their service life is no less than that of the rest of the cladding. Platbands made of other materials in such conditions become unusable an order of magnitude faster and often bring dissonance into the design. At the same time, one should not forget that ceramic architraves are more expensive than usual ones, their length is always less than the width of the door and they also weigh a lot. Installation of planks can only be entrusted to an experienced tiler, since a beginner simply cannot lay narrow long strips evenly. But if durability is a priority, then ceramic platbands will suit you better than others;

    What has been said about ceramic architraves can be repeated in relation to products made of natural or artificial stone. Their scope of use is limited, but with the right execution, such a solution looks very impressive.

    The manufacturers made sure that the arched opening could also be framed with ceramic platbands

  • aluminum architraves - a logical addition to doors in aluminum profile, usually glass, with or without layout. Due to the variety of shapes and shades, such stripes look great not only in offices, but also in modern interiors, especially eclectic ones. Models in gold and bronze look very impressive.

    Aluminum architraves are perfectly combined with the texture of art concrete

In addition to these, there are also coated metal trims, but they are usually sold as a set with the front door and are not used elsewhere.

Differences in profile shape

When choosing a frame for a door, most consumers pay attention to the texture of the front side of the plank. Depending on this parameter, the following types of platbands are distinguished:

  • straight lines are smooth - in section they look like a rectangle with slightly rounded corners and do not have bulges on the front. This is a popular option that, due to its neutrality, fits into any interior. But it looks best in modern minimalism and contemporary. At the top, such planks are most often joined at a right angle, but if desired, they can also be cut down at 45 o. They are the easiest to manufacture, therefore they are inexpensive and are often performed with different coatings;

    In an interior with an abundance of precise straight lines, smooth architraves look better than others.

  • radius - when looking at the end, they resemble a semi-arch, but from other sides this rounding is not too noticeable. Such models require a little more accuracy when joining corners and are always cut at 45 °, the joint at a right angle turns out to be ugly. Radius strips are made from all the materials described above and are available in most popular shades, including those with wood textures. Otherwise, they are quite neutral and get along well with all interior styles;

    Radius architraves (middle) have a more interesting shape than flat (left) and milled (right), but they are more difficult to join in the corners

  • milled - these are planks with longitudinal strips of different widths, reminiscent of ceiling baguettes in style. They are more decorative than radius ones, but due to their wide distribution they do not produce much effect. It is these platbands that are installed with wooden doors, so that when installing economical canvases, this stereotype can be used;

    Even a slight difference in the thickness of the plank makes the casing more decorative.

  • carved - most often found in classical and palace interiors, but with their help you can make a more elegant and modern interior or a romantic nursery. Elite versions of door frames are made of wood and decorated with intricate images of flowers, leaves, and sometimes animals. But since such decor is not available to everyone, there are analogues from MDF on sale. They have a simpler and less deep relief, but you can pick up decent options from them;

    Only no less luxurious architraves with exclusive carvings will fit the luxurious door

  • arched - unlike straight planks, they are designed to frame semicircular openings. Their size is always clearly tied to the radius / diameter of the arch, so they are not so versatile. If you want to make an arch at home with such a spectacular frame, there is a reason to first buy a casing and adjust the opening, taking into account its size.

    To order today you can make beautiful platbands for arches of any shape

Photos of old patterned window frames, so popular lately, did not bypass me either. Looking through these masterpieces of ancient masters, I was inspired to decorate the door of my child's daughter. But since there were no wood carvers in the family and surroundings, I had to be cunning. With the help of a friend, I created a rendering of the desired pattern and ordered the cutting of plywood with a CNC machine, then I painted it myself and emphasized the curves with a pearl patina. It turned out, of course, far from a copy, but as a stylization it looks very good. I didn’t remove the existing platbands, I just glued the patterned ones around the perimeter and a fabulous portal came out. So to everyone whose carpentry skills do not keep up with fantasy, I advise you not to be content with purchased platbands, but to boldly attach your crazy hands to them. After all, in the worst case, you just get a little unpleasant, but still useful experience.

Modern analogues of carved platbands look, though more modest than traditional ones, but just as charming.

Mounting methods

Until recently, there was only one way to securely fasten the platband - to nail it through with small carnations. Due to the absence of a hat, they are almost invisible on light products, but dark ones had to be puttied and tinted (of course, if it was necessary to achieve the perfect look) or to get rid of flaws with furniture wax. This method is suitable for wooden platbands, but it is ridiculous to use it with plastic ones.

The advantage of nailing is the added strength of the structure, as the nails go deep into the box.

Therefore, telescopic, or L-shaped (in cross section), platbands are now popular. They have a special spike that snaps into a groove prepared for it in the door frame. There are no visible fasteners left on the surface; when re-gluing the wallpaper, such a casing can be easily removed and then snapped back into place. But it can only be used in conjunction with special boxes. Such kits are made for doors made of MDF and plastic; they cannot be used with wooden sheets.

Telescopic architraves snap into a special groove on the door frame, no additional fasteners are required

Some manufacturers also offer mounting clips that are fixed on the wall on one side and hold the casing on the other. Depending on the material of the strap, plastic or metal clips are selected.

If you do not have experience with such fixatives, ask the seller to advise you or provide instructions on paper, which is usually attached to the package.

The last popular method of fastening platbands is adhesive bonding. Heavy stone and ceramic strips are mounted on tile adhesive, and liquid nails are enough to hold light polyurethane foam products.

When using an adhesive joint, it is worth temporarily fixing the casing with clamps

Production of door frames

Before you decide to manufacture something, you should familiarize yourself with the ready-made analogues that the industry offers or are made by experienced craftsmen. In the case of platbands, you should pay attention to the width. It cannot be less than 4 cm, since the minimum technological gap between the box and the wall is 3 cm. The maximum is limited only by aesthetic considerations - it makes no sense to choose a very wide edging for a narrow door, as it will look disproportionate (like a too wide-shouldered jacket on a teenager ). On the other hand, if the other doors in the same room look good with wide architraves, it is better to choose the same edging for all leaves. Manufacturers usually offer platbands with a width of 7 to 11 cm, other sizes are already considered non-standard, so they are rare and more expensive.

A complex profile is easier to give a wide casing than a narrow one.

When the assortment of platbands does not satisfy, their prices, or you just want to bring a home-made zest to the house, the master has a question of choosing a material. MDF, metal and ceramics disappear immediately, since it is possible to make something worthy of attention from them only in the factory. But you can also experiment with wood or plywood at home, because almost every home craftsman now has a jigsaw for cutting, and if desired, it is easy to rent or borrow from friends. And rulers, sandpaper and pencils can definitely be found in any household. It is even easier to experiment with gypsum - when working with this material, you can generally do without special tools, a couple of home-made devices will suffice.

We make smooth platbands from wood

For experiments, you need to take well-dried boards from a solid or spliced (if you paint) array of available rocks. Without skills, you should not even take on oak, the lot of a beginner is pine, spruce, birch.

For the manufacture of the simplest platbands, you should:

  1. Cut planks of the required width from the boards with a jigsaw.

    When cutting with a jigsaw, it is convenient to navigate along solid markings or use a side stop

  2. Sand the planks with sandpaper by hand or with a grinder.

    For the best result, you need to repeat the sanding with sandpaper of varying degrees of grit.

  3. Round the corners to prevent cracking of the wood with sandpaper or a hand router.

    If a noticeable step remains after processing with a milling cutter, it can be removed with sandpaper

The procedure is simple, but when taking into account the prices for wooden platbands, it is not always appropriate. Usually it is worth making such products yourself only when you need wide slats that are not on sale.

Do-it-yourself textured gypsum cashing

For those who have never worked with plaster, the technology for making long narrow strips may seem complicated, but if desired, almost any beginner can master it. Just keep in mind that this work is messy and will need a separate room for it.

Let's get started:

  1. Think about how your casing will look like in a section or copy a picture from the network. Print or draw it in the desired size.

    You can take the industrial version as a basis and adjust it to fit your needs.

  2. Find a piece of thick plastic and cut a recess in it that matches the shape of the future casing. With tools and skills, such a scraper can be made from tin.

    It is better to choose the size of the scraper so that it is convenient for you to hold it

  3. To make it easier to keep the scraper strictly at right angles to the surface, you can make a frame for it.

    The main secret of the device lies in the chosen quarter, which helps to lead the hand at the same distance from the edge of the table.

  4. Cover the work surface with cling film to prevent plaster from sticking to it. It is convenient to work on a sheet of laminated plywood or an old kitchen table; it is not necessary to cover their smooth surface. Lay a strip of medical bandage or a special reinforcing mesh made of thin thread on the prepared surface and secure them around the edges with double-sided tape.

    A wide platband can be strengthened with two or three strips

  5. Stir the gypsum with water and a small amount of PVA glue to a liquid slurry and pour it onto the work surface along the long edge. For orientation, you can mark the border with masking tape or pull the thread.

    For one or two times you can choose the optimal amount of gypsum so that the residue does not dry out while working on the product

  6. Cover the liquid strip with a piece of medical bandage, it is needed for additional reinforcement of the product.

    If the strip is slightly wrinkled or skewed, this will not have much effect on the result.

  7. Cover the strip of plaster with another layer and start removing the excess with a scraper. At the end point, it is better to substitute the tray into which the residues will be dumped. You need to make several passes to get the texture clean. Keep in mind that the gypsum will expand slightly as it dries.

    It is advisable to use the scraper in the same direction each time.

  8. If shells remain on the strip, add a little liquid fresh mortar to the dried gypsum and go over the scraper a few more times. To obtain a smooth surface, you must first moisten the scraper. At the end, you need to trim the ends of the product with a spatula.

    After the final pass, a smooth, uniform surface will be obtained.

In this way, you can make other moldings for the interior: baguettes, moldings, plinths. Remember that before using the product, you need to dry it for 1-2 days, depending on its thickness.

Production of patterned additional elements

If simple straight planks are not worthy of your doors, you can experiment with carved ones. The advantage is that you can create your own pattern and an absolutely exclusive product. But you have to spend a lot of time and work with more or less soft material. Not everyone can cut a pattern in a thick wooden board with high quality, so beginners turn their eyes towards plywood and extruded polystyrene foam. The first guarantees the environmental friendliness of the platbands, but the second will help to achieve a more expressive relief due to its thickness. After cutting and installation, both materials will need to be coated with a protective agent - water-based paint or stain and varnish (only suitable for plywood).

But the manufacturing technology is similar:

  1. Find or invent your report (a fragment of a drawing that will be repeated along the entire length of the casing), draw it on paper and cut it out. When making a drawing, care is needed, if necessary, use auxiliary tools. For example, swirls are easy to draw with caps of different sizes. Remember that too thin a pattern will create difficulties for you when cutting and subsequent installation.

    When working with long narrow strips, it is more convenient to use fiberglass in a reel than sheet material

If you plan to mount the platbands with glue, they should be painted before installation. When using carnations, it is better to apply the finishing coat of paint after the trim is attached to the wall. This method is best suited for making crowns above the door, since with this arrangement, the patterned decor is minimally injured and lasts longer.

Installation of door frames

The main secret of high-quality installation of door frames is to use the rule "measure seven times - cut once" in time. After all, in the corners of the plank should fit nicely and leave no gaps. For beginners, it will be easiest to work with smooth straight trims, since they do not have to follow the joining of the pattern.

When using corner elements at the joints, places for trimming can be selected during rough assembly

In addition, novice masters are best suited for the measurement method in kind. That is, you do not need to measure the height of the door, mark it on the bar and then cut it off. Better try to attach the bar to the right place and mark the correct height on it. It is best to do this with a helper, or temporarily attach the strips with double-sided tape to roughly fold all three elements and check how they fit together.

The exact position of the straight undercut of the plank can be found by attaching all the elements of the trim in place

If a joint is planned at an angle of 90 °, you need to fix the two verticals correctly and attach the horizontal part like a ruler. This will make the mark at the correct height - the height of the box plus the width of the bar. Further, it is easy to determine the length of the horizontal bar, for which it is enough to attach the edge to the left post and mark the intersection with the right one. When marking, keep in mind that the cutting blade has its own thickness, so as not to get a gap as a result.

To get an accurate cut at 45 degrees, you need to build a diagonal of the square from the lower left corner to the upper right

Docking at 45° is usually done using a miter box, but out of habit it will hinder more than help. Therefore, it is also worth using a visual method. Assemble the edging as in the previous case, but now pay attention to the diagonal of the square obtained by overlapping two planks. To begin with, you can make marks on the top and trim it, and then just draw lines on the vertical slats like a stencil. Thus, you will quickly dock the trim and the cut corner will definitely look in the right direction.

When the platbands are cut correctly, all that remains is to snap them into the grooves, glue, nail or secure in another way convenient for you.
