Cold forging is impossible without special forging equipment. Let's take a look at the types of fixtures and the shapes that can be obtained with their help. We have prepared drawings and thematic videos for you. We will also consider the sequence of making a do-it-yourself cold forging machine.

If you are just going to organize a cold forging workshop and want to avoid high costs, then making machines and fixtures yourself will help you create your small business without excessive costs.

Basic fixtures and machines

Cold forging machines are mainly designed for arc or angle bending and twisting. They can be manual or electrically operated.

The main types of machines and devices for cold forging:

  • Gnutik
  • Twister
  • Snail
  • the globe
  • Wave
  • Flashlight

Device "Gnutik"

Purchased or self-made "Gnutik" is a universal device that allows you to get an arc or angle from a rod. It is a base with a slider on which a stop with an angle (90 ° or another, if necessary) and two cylindrical fixed stops is fixed. By moving the slider and corner stop, the rod is bent at an angle. To obtain the arc, a third cylinder is provided that rotates on the side opposite from the corner stop.

The device can be carried out on a horizontal or vertical platform.

Device "Twister"

"Twister" - a tool for twisting bars, mostly square, along the longitudinal axis. This simple device can be manual or electric. Principle of operation: both ends of the rod are fixed, then one fastener begins to turn, twisting the metal to the required shape.

"Snail" device

The Snail tool is designed to generate curls (or spirals) and currencies (S-shaped parts). There are various designs.

One of the design options: 1 - snail share; 2 - the basis of the machine; 3 - pressure roller; 4 - a lever for controlling the pressure roller; 5 - fastening the base; 6 - pin for fixing the plowshares; 7 - groove for the pinch roller; 8 - axis of the control lever; 9 - spring for pressing the roller; 10 - clamp for the workpiece; 11 - snail leading share; 12 - main axis; 13 - levers

The result should be the following device:

Another lightweight design to bend rolled stock up to 12 mm:

1 - segment of the cochlea; 2 - eccentric; 3 - handle; 4 - base; 5 - guide skids; 6 - axis; 7 - slider; 8 - axle nut; 9 - roller mounting axis; 10 - roller; 11 - drive axle; 12 - eccentric guide; 13 - the central segment of the cochlea; 14 - eccentric lamb; 15 - main leg; 16 - connecting pin of the cochlea segments; 17 - adjusting screw; 18 - connecting ear of the cochlea segments

Often the "Snail" device is made on a support, especially if thick rolled products need to be bent.

We will talk more about such constructions below.

Fixture "Globe"

Such a device looks like a school protractor and is designed to make arcs with a large bending radius from a strip, square, circle or hexagon. First, one end of the workpiece is fixed with a bend, then it is bent along the entire length according to the template. The principle of operation is somewhat similar to the operation of a seaming machine for conservation.

Operating principle

Making a "snail" with a drive

The electrically driven snail facilitates the production of curls and currencies. This is especially valuable when the work is not "for the soul", but for the manufacture of a large number of products of the same type on the stream when working on order.

Below are the stages of assembly of a machine for bending a rod with a maximum section of 10x10 mm. The 0.5 kW / 1000 rpm motor is working at the limit of its capabilities. Performs 6 shaft revolutions per minute. The segments of the volute were turned from a round blank St.45 without heat treatment, 25 mm high and 20 mm thick. The snail is mounted on the shaft on bearings from the rear wheel of the motorcycle - 7204. The supporting roller is fixed rigidly in the groove. Pulleys are installed between the motor and the gearbox.

Below are the drawings of the snail segments.

Snail element 1

Snail element 2

Snail element 3

The central element of the snail

For a more massive rod (from 12 mm), the engine power should be more than a kilowatt. The photos below show a machine with a 2.2 kW 1000 rpm motor giving an output on the shaft of about 10 rpm. This is already a machine for professional use. A used gearbox is used, the matrix is cut from a workpiece 30 mm thick - the most time-consuming process.

For cold forging, you also need an anvil and a hammer. The forge is not needed, it is only required for hot forging.

Advice! Before starting work, draw a full-size sketch of the future structure. This will help you adjust the elements and not get confused during assembly.

To establish your own workshop for metal processing, the main six machines are enough: a bunch, a twister, a flashlight, a volumetric, a snail, and a wave.

The production of metal parts requires special equipment capable of generating the force that forms the shape of the object. Alternatively, relatively inexpensive accessories can be purchased. However, it is not difficult to independently make almost any cold forging machine with your own hands.

We will consider what is required for this in the course of our article.

Of course, if the budget allows, you can not make your life especially difficult and purchase universal equipment for cold metal forging. Moreover, such a machine in itself combines all the individual hand tools. But the rather high cost of such a workbench makes it inaccessible to many home workshops.

What tools can you make for cold forging yourself and what to produce on them?

To found your own workshop for metal processing, the main six machines are quite enough: a bunch, a twister, a flashlight, a volumetric box, a snail, and a wave.

These DIY machines are capable of processing the main types of materials used in cold metalworking technology: squares, rods (up to 14 millimeters in cross section) and steel strip, 3-6 mm thick with a width in the range of 25 millimeters. the same operations as plant equipment: bending, twisting or pressing without loss of quality.

It is also quite possible to produce the basic elements of cold-forged products on a home-made manual machine: curls, curls, baskets required for further assembly of finished products. Moreover, the forging equipment itself is compact, it can be easily placed in a garage workshop.

Learning to work with a cold forging tool is easy. This does not require special knowledge about the properties of the metal and its further processing (annealing, tempering or quenching). The training and manufacturing process is practically safe, the equipment and materials do not work with high temperatures, and the working mechanisms are very simple.

The only drawback in cold metal forging and working on manual equipment is the possibility of rejects if mistakes are made. But the main problem is that defects are very difficult to fix. Defective elements can only be corrected by heating the metal in a furnace or on a burner.

The easiest ones for self-assembly will be: snails, gnuts and twisters. They do not require expensive tools. All you need is welding, cutting tools, drawings with materials and a little understanding in mechanics.

So how to make homemade cold forging machines with your own hands?

Assembly of different types of equipment

For the initial stage of arranging a cold metalworking workshop, you will need three main devices: a gnut, a twister and a snail. What elements can be produced on them?

Gnutik is a device that greatly simplifies the bending of a part and the production of bends of any shape.

It easily processes rolled steel in the form of a steel strip and bar with dimensions of 12 × 12 millimeters. In addition to corner pieces, the gnut can create arc-shaped pieces.

The twister is used to twist a long workpiece around its axis into a longitudinal spiral. In hot forging, there is a similar tool - a knob. The twister is similar to this device in its structure. This is a frame on which a gate with a rotating head and a slider are fixed, which limits and fixes the required length of the part. Parts twisted on such equipment are a common element used to assemble window bars, fences, railings and other types of fences.

If additional devices in the form of a shaft are installed on the twister, then it will be able to produce voluminous baskets.

The snail is perhaps the most famous handheld cold forging machine. On its conductor, volute and various parts twisted around the axis are produced. The assembled device consists of a kind of frame (round / square) on which a conductor (spiral) and a manually operated roller in the form of a lever are fixed. By pressing the drive lever and feeding the workpiece, you can twist any type of spiral without any problems.

The main thing in the manufacture of hand-held equipment for cold metal forging is compliance with three basic principles:

  1. The length of the linkage is designed to provide sufficient force on the metal.
  2. It is best to make the components of the installations prefabricated or movable, then it will be possible to adjust the dimensions of the produced elements without any problems.
  3. All parts of the conductors are made with a sufficient margin of safety, and the connections must be of high quality.

Following these principles, it is quite feasible to manufacture normal metalworking equipment with excellent performance.

The listed three installations with a manually operated mechanism make it possible to produce most of the products without heating the metal.

Gnut assembly

This cold forging machine is widely used. It can be used to bend parts of any configuration. The device is quite simple, it consists of a base on which the rollers are mounted, a wedge (deflection bend) and control levers. The machine itself can be executed in vertical or horizontal design.

It is easier to make a horizontal type on your own.

  • It is necessary to prepare the bed in which the bore holes are drilled for fastening the rollers, wedge and lever.
  • The wedge should move along the bed (controlled by pressing the lower arm). Its position should be interchangeable, so it will be possible to adjust the angle and steepness of the bend. To do this, it is better to make it on a screw thread, screwing which changes the distance of the wedge.
  • The upper arm is used to shape the workpiece into an arc.

After watching the video, you can understand how such a machine works and the principle of its device.

Making a snail

The photo shows the main parts of the snail cold forging device. The element is formed due to a special conductor, coiled in a spiral (snail). This part, preferably, should be two-part. The manufacture of the machine is as follows.

  • A round or square bed is being prepared. It is better to use 5-6 mm metal for its manufacture.
  • Holes are drilled at the base for fastening the conductor (two of its parts) and the working lever.
  • A rotating roller is mounted on the side, which will set the movement of the workpiece.
  • The lever must be of sufficient strength, it can be made from a suitable profile or pipe (with thick walls).
  • The jig is made of thick metal, bent in a spiral. Holes are made in it for mounting bolts.

Below are photos of the drawings of the conductor and the device itself.

For a more understandable principle of operation of such equipment, watch the video provided:

Do-it-yourself hand-made cold forging machines with such a design are quite capable of bending bars and squares of different sections up to 14 millimeters.

It is worth remembering that more force on a thick workpiece can be created using a longer lever, so an additional extension can be provided for such a drive.

There are other options for the snail. For example, with an operator in the form of a gate located in a horizontal plane. Schematic drawings of such a device are shown in the photo below.

How to make a twister

The twister (or torsion bar) has a horizontal arrangement of parts. It consists of a frame, on which a wrench with a rotating head is attached, and a slider, which rigidly fixes the workpiece and regulates the length of the product.

  • First you need to prepare a workbench (table) where the device will be fixed.
  • The frame can be made from strong I-beam or any other material that is strong enough. Its length is selected depending on the parameters of the workpieces being processed.
  • A slider is made on the bed. Its lower part should move along the device and be fixed in the desired position. Bolt holes can be drilled for fastening. The part where the workpiece will be inserted can be made to fit its size (through hole) or made from a vice.
  • A rotating head gate can also be made for a specific workpiece or you can use a lathe chuck (small size)
  • The installation is mounted on the table so that the edge of the table does not interfere with turning the knob.

As with the volute, the length of the arm determines the force that is exerted on the metal being cut.

If you make an additional mount for the shaft, then on such a torsion it will be possible to produce voluminous baskets by twisting a bar onto a template.

The principle of the machine is shown in the video:

Having studied the information, you can also make such devices as a wave (wavy elements), a flashlight (baskets) or a volumetric unit (volumetric elements with parts curved in different planes).

If possible, some of these machines can be made electrically driven by installing a motor with the appropriate power.

What can you add to this material from your personal experience in the manufacture of equipment for cold forging? How difficult is it to make a cold forging machine with your own hands and what materials to use? Join the discussion in the comments to the article and share your work.

With the help of a machine with your own hands, you can make beautiful curly metal parts.

A homemade snail is not so difficult to assemble, so even someone with little experience in such work can make it.

In the article we will analyze the plus of cold forging, and also tell you how to make a tool for working with it yourself - drawings, templates, videos and photos will help you in your work, and as a result you will get a useful and easy-to-use tool for working with metal.

Pros and features of the process

Cold forging is a popular type of work due to the fact that it can be used to create unusual parts of various shapes and sizes.

Using a cold forging machine, you can make a flower bed fence, a decorative lantern, an unusual fence, a railing or bench handles, and other elements. You can see how the details created through this process look in the photo.

The plus of cold forging is also that it is quite easy to make a machine with which you can create such parts with your own hands. This will help save on the purchase of expensive equipment.

The cold forging process consists of three main elements: bending, pressing and welding of parts. The equipment required for this process is quite simple and compact, you can do it yourself and it won't take up much space in your workshop or garage.

With cold forging, you can start learning how to work metal, because this process is simpler and safer, as you do not have to deal with the high temperatures in this case, as with other types of welding.

For this process, usually a ready-made template is used - that is, blanks of parts.

Of course, cold forging has its own subtleties, they mainly consist in the fact that the part is easily damaged or deformed in the process: forged elements often break, and it is no longer possible to correct the deficiency, so forging must be done very carefully.

However, using a high-quality machine tool and a drawing of a future part, you can easily learn how to create products with twisted, wavy and other unusual shapes. You can see the options in the photo above.

The process of processing blanks by means of cold forging takes place in several stages. The first step is to create a template or drawing of the future design.

Different machines provide different possibilities for creating patterns - it depends on the complexity of the tool making.

For example, the simplest hand-made machines can only bend products, while more complex models can be used to create patterns, etc.

After the template or drawing is ready, you need to buy the required amount of material in accordance with your calculation. For cold forging, you will need iron rods, which can be purchased at the store.

The cold forging rods should not be too thick, otherwise they will be difficult to bend. The next stage is making parts with your own hands.

The most important thing here is to set the settings correctly so that the parts are not damaged or deformed during the operation of the machine. it will be impossible to fix the problem.

Last but not least, the parts made are fixed to the frame. This is done by welding.

You need to be especially careful when welding with your own hands with thin-walled tubes, because they are easy to burn through, and then the structure will become faulty and you will have to do it all over again.

You can follow the entire forging process in the video before starting to work on your details.

But before you start cold forging, of course, you need to make the machine that is needed for this. The "Snail" machine is the most common device for processing metal products by the cold forging method with your own hands.

You can see all the stages of creating a machine in the video - there is nothing complicated about it, and almost everyone will be able to cope with this business on their own.

Machine creation

The manufacturing process of the machine has several stages, after completing which one after another, you will receive a ready-made tool with which you can create curly products for your summer cottage or home.

Before starting cold forging, you need to make a template and a drawing. It is performed on graph paper, which will be able to reflect the exact dimensions of the future product. On it you need to depict a spiral with increasing turns.

The turns should increase in accordance with the pitch if you want to make symmetrical products, but if this is not essential, then the turns of the spiral may increase unevenly.

Before assembling the machine, you need to decide on the diameter of the workpieces that you will process on it. The step must be chosen based on this value: it must be larger than the diameter of the rod that you will be processing.

If the step is not large enough, then you simply cannot pull the parts out of the machine without damaging it. Thus, all the work will be done in vain.

The homemade working surface of the snail can be made of sheet metal with a thickness of 4 mm. The size of the surface depends on what size details you will be processing - you must first draw up a drawing so that all dimensions are clear.

To make the shape, use strip metal that is at least 3 mm thick. Thus, it will be easy to work with a homemade snail. To facilitate the process, you need to fix one of the edges of the workpiece so that it does not slip out.

Sketch of the machine for the snail: Figure 1: 1 - the leading share of the snail, 2 - the main axis, 3 - levers for applying force, 4 - clamp for the workpiece; picture 2: 1-snail share, 2- machine platform, 3- pressure roller, 4- lever for controlling the pressure roller, 5-attachment of the platform, 6-fingers for fixing the snail shares, 7- groove along which the pressure roller walks, 8 - axis of the pressure roller control lever, 9 - spring for roller attraction; Figure 3- the principle of operation of the device: 1- the snail turns; Figure 4 - examples of products made with a snail.

For the retainer, you can use a cut part of the rod, which is not inferior in size to the strip. During cold forging, you must also attach the part to the workbench.

Since the impact on the part is quite strong during cold forging, you need to think about fixing separately, because you cannot hold the workpiece with your own hands - it can slip off and ruin all the work.

The rest of the snail's parts are quite simple to assemble - the main thing is to use the drawing and watch the video before starting the process yourself.

The machine made by you can be both monolithic and collapsible - decide in advance which design will be more convenient for you, and make a drawing in order to carry out all the work in accordance with it.

If you want a self-made snail to be monolithic, then weld the machine to the work platform so that the elements are stationary.

The most important thing with this type of construction is to correctly and securely fasten the end of the part that you will be processing.

If the machine for cold forging is planned to be collapsible, then on the working site it is necessary to make mounting holes, with the help of which it will be possible to connect the "body" of the machine to the site.

The removable design is good in that it is more convenient to move it if necessary, or to remove the machine to replace or repair damaged parts - with a monolithic type of construction, this will not be possible.

However, with a removable machine, the quality of fixing parts will be worse - you will have to constantly correct the threaded connections yourself, because they will inevitably become weaker during operation.

There are other versions of cold forging machines, but the Snail machine is the most functional, and besides, it is not difficult to make it yourself. How to make it, as well as other product options, see the video.

If you decide to use the snail as a hobby tool, then you should take into account that, although the device itself will not cost you much (it does not require any specific parts and tools), cold forging still involves some costs.

First, you will have to spend money on the materials themselves that you will be processing. And the larger the product is planned, the more money will have to be spent.

To estimate costs, always make a preliminary drawing of the product that reflects its actual dimensions. For example, to make a small flower stand, you will need to spend at least 2,000 rubles on twigs.

How much material more complex products will require - you can calculate yourself.

The cost will also depend on the complexity of the pattern that you will create with the snail - the more complex it is, the more expensive the product will cost you.

You do not have to spend a lot of money on tools for the machine itself, however, if you have not previously been engaged in the manufacture of such tools, then it is better to buy ready-made equipment for it - in this case, the machine will last you longer, and it will be easier to work on it.

Finishing after forging may also require some investment - at a minimum, you will need to buy a primer and paint to give the piece a finished, attractive look.

Despite these costs, snail forging is still an affordable and popular tool for metalworking, you can do it both as a hobby and on a professional basis, but in this case, over time, you may need a more powerful tool.

If a land plot is purchased, be it a house or a summer cottage, the question of registration of the plot always arises. One of the most beautiful and showing self-sufficiency and good taste of the owner of the jewelry is forged products. It can be just a forged brazier, or whole compositions of forged products.

From forged metal, you can make gazebos striking in their beauty, a bench or a staircase will perfectly fit into any interior. Fences (fences), even balconies, are made forged. You can make a railing on the porch.

All this beauty today can be done by yourself, it is not difficult, as it might seem at first glance. The fact is that these things can be created without resorting to the services of a forge. DIY cold forging machines can be used right at home. And the photos of forging clearly illustrate the results.

Types of forging machines

For work on cold forging, special machines are used. Moreover, each curl or bend needs its own cold hand forging machine. They are:

  • With a manual drive;
  • Electrically operated.

The first is used when it comes to small amounts of work. They are easier to create. Their downside is their low performance. Drawings of a do-it-yourself forging machine will show the entire assembly process in an accessible way.

The latter will be necessary when it comes to streaming production of forged products. Their performance is much higher, and no physical effort is needed - the drive is carried out by an electric motor.

For those who are just taking their first steps in the manufacture of forged things, it makes sense to start with a machine called "Snail". A snail for do-it-yourself forging will be an excellent assistant when making a gate and a bench.

If you have passed the first steps and there is an interest in developing the chosen direction, you need to move on to mastering the torsion machine. With it, you can achieve the use of non-standard approaches to the execution of forged products. Your things will acquire individuality - you can diversify the products produced.

Cold forging stages

Although the process of making forged items is very exciting, it must be remembered that this process must be carried out in a specific sequence.

To understand the sequence of technological steps, you need to know the stages of forging or do-it-yourself forging elements:

  • Draft.
  • Broach.
  • Firmware.

Upsetting is necessary to increase the existing metal workpiece from the side by decreasing the height. It is performed under rather high pressure.

Broaching gives a decrease in the cross-section, increases the length. The workpiece needs to be heated, then "go through" with a hammer.

Sewing refers to the creation of holes within a workpiece. The holes in the workpiece itself can be made of various sizes and diameters.

Distinguish between firmware:

  • Open;
  • Closed.

After the stages of upsetting and broaching, the structure of the thing becomes more fragile. It is important to take this into account in the future and be extremely careful when working with the product, since the thing can simply be broken.

Step-by-step instructions for forging

All forged items can be made by hand right at home. Special patterns cannot be executed, however, all basic elements can be done by yourself. It is important to follow all stages and technology.

There are several technological stages:

  • Checking all calculations. Even minor inaccuracies can spoil the entire final result. Correcting mistakes will be very difficult, and often impossible.
  • Assembling a decorative composition.
  • The elements are fastened to each other by welding. However, it is important to remember that it can damage small decorative elements.
  • Processing the resulting product - by grinding and painting the entire resulting product.

Lack of cold forging

The only drawback of cold forging is the inability to correct errors in the process. If the workpiece is spoiled, then it will have to be thrown away at best in scrap metal, or left as a keepsake and used for training in the future.

The whole point of cold forging is that the metal is not heated, but is bent by processing in a "cold" form. This is how the metal is shaped.

The advantage of cold forging is the absence of the need for special equipment, as well as the absence of the need to use fire-hazardous equipment, the manufacturing conditions are acceptable for any person with any health. The use of high-temperature conditions is not required.

DIY forging photo

Hot forging has been known to man since the time he began to process and use metals in his life. Before the invention of stamping and metal-cutting machines, hot forging and casting were the only ways to produce tools and weapons, household items and jewelry.

To master the traditional blacksmithing, it took a long time to learn and gain experience. The products of the blacksmith turned out to be very laborious and unique, this is an undoubted advantage for artistic creativity and an equally obvious disadvantage where a large number of identical products are needed.

Disadvantages of hot forging such as:

  • great labor intensity,
  • high requirements for the qualifications of the master,
  • low repeatability of products.

The cold forging method has no drawbacks. It is based on the property of metals to change their shape within certain limits under the influence of mechanical stress. The technology is applicable to round and square bars, metal strip, pipes and rolled products of various profiles. Several basic operations such as

  • bending the workpiece at a given angle and along a given radius,
  • the formation of curls and spirals,
  • twisting one or more workpieces along the longitudinal axis

and the combination of the resulting details allows you to create lace fences, gazebos, benches, decorative elements and household utensils in a reasonable time and at an affordable price, several times, or even tens of times lower than when using hot forging.

In addition, all the elements will be exactly the same in shape and size, which is especially important when forming patterns and ornaments from them.

To obtain the main elements, special machines are used.

  • Gnutik is one of the most popular. It allows you to bend a bar at a given angle and radius, including in the form of a wave.
  • The snail is used to twist the end of a bar or pipe into a spiral
  • The torsion bar is designed to twist the bar along its longitudinal axis.

Device "Gnutik"

The rollers on fixed stops are replaceable in order to be able to bend rods and pipes at different angles and radii. A removable roller or wedge is also attached to the movable stop, depending on the required bend shape.

While the straight workpiece is still clamped with fixed stops and, rotating the drive of the bend worm mechanism, a movable stop is brought to it - a wedge or a roller. Continuing to rotate the drive, bend the workpiece to the desired angle.

It is quite possible to make a gnut for cold forging with your own hands, it is enough to follow the drawing exactly, observing the dimensions and allowances.

Difficulties in the home workshop can arise with milling and drilling holes in high-strength steel.

If there is no such equipment in the workshop yet, it is better to place an order for the main parts of the whip in production - such work will not be done with a drill and a jigsaw.

Connecting and painting parts

To assemble the parts into the desired structure, it is necessary to provide for an even free space - on the floor or on the table, depending on the size. It is best to sandblast the workpieces to remove possible rust and clean the surface before welding and painting. The sandblasting unit can also be made independently from a used gas cylinder, a pair of nozzles and taps. The ceramic body of a used spark plug can be used for the injector. To do this, it is enough to have the skills of welding and locksmithing.

After sandblasting, the parts are laid out on the assembly site. For the convenience of work, you can use lining bars. After the parts have been placed, it is worth checking again that their arrangement matches the drawing. Further, having fixed the key structural elements with clamps, you need to grab them to each other by spot welding. Having checked the dimensions, angles and relative position for the last time, you can start welding all the necessary seams.

After welding, it is required to clean the scale with wire brushes fixed in a drill, and in hard-to-reach places manually. The structure is ready for painting. Depending on the chosen primer and topcoat, as well as on the method of application, the assembly is placed on spacers or fixed vertically with temporary stops.

It is convenient to paint structures with a high density of parts from a spray gun; for a rare lattice to reduce paint loss, you will have to arm yourself with a brush.

Cold forged products

A wide variety of products are made using the cold forging method. These are, first of all, elements of lattices and fences - both the rods themselves and the crossbars, tops, ornaments. From a distance of several meters, it is difficult to distinguish it from the wrought iron grating. Any lattice will be enlivened by curls and spirals that fold into intricate patterns and ornaments. Thus, an ordinary fence, in addition to its utilitarian purpose, also acquires artistic value. This will require a gnut, a snail and a torsion bar.

Forged racks for lanterns, railings for bridges over reservoirs, awnings and porches, tables and benches look great on the local area. And the gazebo itself is not bad to make from a forged bar. Curls and spirals will give it unexpected lightness and airiness for a harsh metal, and twisted supports will emphasize the aspiration upward.

Forged barbecues are also widespread today, which also complement the household purpose with an aesthetic impression. The brazier itself is lost among the canopy, patterned walls and supports, decorated with curls of the roof.
