traditional look

Tadelakt is called traditional plaster, which is most often used for wall decoration in eastern countries. It is quite easy to get such a mixture. But it will be quite difficult to get the necessary materials, since they are located directly in Marrakech.

For the manufacture of the solution, it is necessary to use special lime, as well as apply sand. The advantages of such materials is the natural composition, which does not contain harmful synthetic additives or dyes.

Tadelakt originates from ancient times, but has not lost its relevance even today.

Previously, builders actively used this technology, since the work did not require a lot of time and effort, and expensive substances or additives were not required from the materials.

Such plaster served as the basis for the manufacture of containers that could contain clean drinking water. Quite often, tadelakt was also used in the design of rooms and buildings, basically, such a technique could be seen on walls or floors.

A feature of this traditional look is that with the help of plaster you can create absolutely any shape according to your own taste and discretion. Quite often, the technology is used to create various items in the interior, for example, for the manufacture of sinks or a bathroom.

Technology Secrets

Those who are already familiar with such technology as Moroccan plaster know that this type is quite bright and rich in color shades.

But how to achieve such an effect:

  1. The main secret is that this solution contains a special pigment, which makes the color so expressive.
  2. In order to achieve the content of this pigment, you do not need to resort to special techniques.
  3. All that needs to be done in this case is to mix several shades, as a result of which such a bright tone is obtained.

Today, many modern manufacturers use this technology, as it is really capable of giving rich colors to the design of many interiors.

Regarding technology, in this case, such a process needs to be trained for quite a long time. In eastern countries, the secret of applying Moroccan plaster is passed down from one generation to another.

Many note that this coating has a water-repellent effect. This result can be achieved if a small layer of olive oil is applied. Due to the reaction of the alkaline environment, the surface quickly acquires all the necessary properties.

The whole process step by step

As noted above, decorative plaster can be applied to a carefully treated surface. The advantage is that you can even work with plasterboard walls.

Regarding surface preparation, it is worth noting that it is best to treat the wall with a small layer of glue, which is often used to fix tiles. In this case, the material will hold better.

After that, you need to start working with plaster:

  1. The first layer is applied to the surface, which must dry during the day. As a result of pre-treatment with glue, the material will look better and level on the surface.
  2. After the plaster has dried, it is necessary to apply a second ball. Both in the first and in the second case.
  3. This must be done with a metal tool - a spatula. For processing defects, it is better to use a plastic spatula.
  4. After all layers have dried and got rid of moisture, the plaster must be compacted and rubbed using smooth stones.
  5. After that, you need to take soap (trowel), and use a soft brush to treat the surface. In this case, the surface will have water-repellent characteristics. The glossy sheen that is formed in the final result will also be an advantage.

There are some nuances that must be taken into account when working with such material. For example, in order for the plaster to dry and each layer to take the correct shape, it takes about 10-11 hours.

So that the material does not succumb to damage and deformation from the influence of many factors, it is necessary to use special protective substances in the form of wax or oil.

Natural waterproof plaster of high decorativeness - a material originally from Morocco

For many years in our country, plaster was perceived as a rough finish, the basis for the finishing decor, and even in the villages it was mostly whitewashed. However, in recent years, decorative plasters have successfully crowded out other popular types of interior decoration. And this is not only due to the variety and stunning decorative effect, but also due to the wide scope of application, coupled with naturalness. One of the most interesting varieties of such plasters, which has gained recognition among FORUMHOUSE craftsmen, is tadelakt.

  • Experience of our craftsmen
  • Not tadelakt, but interesting

Universal Moroccan - history, composition

Tadelakt is a natural decorative plaster originally from Morocco, its distinctive feature is the ability to use it not only in wet rooms, but also as a cover for sinks, baths, and pools. Initially, Tadelakt consisted only of lime and crushed rocks, but today the composition has changed somewhat and includes hydraulic lime, quartz sand, marble flour, clay, ash and diatomaceous earth are also possible. If we are talking about colored plaster, then it contains only natural dyes of mineral or vegetable origin. Such unique properties as density, moisture resistance and wear resistance, plaster owes it to hydraulic lime. It is obtained by firing special limestones, which contain minor impurities of clay.

During heat treatment, special compounds are produced in lime, which provide the material with the ability to harden not only in air, but even in water. Therefore, initially tadelakt was used as a sealant, for coating the inside of containers with drinking water.

But since the surface was not only impenetrable, but also silky, resembling a cut of marble, plaster was also used for interiors and even facades of palaces, inside hammams and fonts. Today, tadelakt is popular not only for finishing dry and wet rooms, but also for finishing monolithic kitchens, including work areas, sinks and aprons, as well as for covering bathrooms, sinks, decor and furnishings (niches, shelves, podiums).

Features of the use of plaster

The composition can be used on almost any durable surface that is not subject to vibration, whether it be the floor, ceiling, walls or decorative elements, but the base must be as strong as possible. Tadelakt has the best adhesion with concrete, natural stone, clay, but if desired, it can also be applied to a surface made of block materials and even drywall. But the blocks must be plastered, and the drywall reinforced with a reinforcing layer (serpyanka and tile adhesive). It is not recommended to apply the composition to sharp corners, therefore, the interior, finished with tadelakt, is characterized by smooth, rounded lines without sharp transitions.

Tadelakt is not only the name of the plaster itself, although it has become a household name, but also the method of application - in layers, with careful rubbing of each layer and careful polishing with a smooth river stone. Already after grinding, the surface becomes dense and moisture resistant, but in order to protect it from water as much as possible, the final step is to apply a special potash soap obtained on the basis of olive oil. Some additionally cover the plaster with wax, but this is rather in order to increase the decorative effect. Already after the soap layer, correctly applied tadelakt is immune even to direct contact with water.

With all its beauty, versatility and durability, this Moroccan plaster belongs to luxury, expensive materials, and due to the complexity of application, the involvement of professionals will bring the price per square even of a flat surface to several thousand. Nevertheless, the decorative effect, durability and moisture resistance of the material make it quite popular, and self-application saves a significant amount.

As for the tempting opportunity to make the composition yourself, if you buy lime, sand and marble flour in specialized stores, you can really get a completely working solution, although it will not be tadelakt. It will turn out natural lime decorative plaster, it remains to apply it to a well-prepared surface in several approaches, wipe each layer with a stone or spatula, cover with soap and wax. It will be beautiful and even be able to repel water, but you still shouldn’t use a homemade product for the sink, but for the walls in the shower it’s quite.

By the way, you can save on soap, taking the usual, household; alkaline does not interact so actively with lime, but after all, plaster is not tadelakt, so what's the point of overpaying.

If you work with a ready-made, certified composition, then the soap must be appropriate, against the background of other expenses, it will not make the weather.

Experience of our craftsmen

One of the portal participants, with the nickname marpasha, used tadelakt as a finishing layer when finishing the niche of the future wardrobe, he folded the niche itself from foam blocks and plastered it with tile adhesive.

In the same thread, they also thought about replacing the expensive composition with a cheaper one, for application in the shower. Marpasha, professionally engaged in decorating, advises not to be smart with the components, but to buy ready-made lime plaster at a lower cost.

Marpasha FORUMHOUSE user

You can take any lime plaster (marmorino, travertino), in fifteen-liter buckets, the price is quite acceptable, the open time is not limited. The hydrophobicity of lime plasters is manifested after treatment with a solution of soap (as a water repellent), after soap, wax can be applied.

Whether it is a branded Moroccan or an analogue, the key to decorativeness and durability is the correct preparation of the base. As noted Marpasha, if we are talking about the walls in the shower room, then they must first be plastered with a cement composition, and then applied lime. As for maintaining the appearance, it’s also nothing complicated - a one-time coating with soap and periodic waxing, as it becomes cloudy.

The pro himself finished the kitchen with tadelakt.

Another one of our craftsmen, who worked with tadelakt, revealed a step-by-step application process, which will be very useful for those who decide to save money on attracting craftsmen or want to control what they pay a rather good amount for.

In short - if you have experience in applying ordinary plaster, half the work is already done.

  • The first stage is simple: apply the plaster in an even layer without sagging.
  • The second stage is similar to the first and inspires confidence that everything is going like clockwork.
  • The third stage: applying the second layer of plaster, rubbing with stone, applying soap, rubbing with stone.

He advises not to apply the solution immediately over a large area, especially if alone, it is necessary to rub it thoroughly, and the solution "sits down". They, with their assistants in three hands, barely managed to process six meters, and this is with experience. There is another important nuance.

C4BooM

It is necessary to moisten strongly between layers (when you apply lime on lime) and where you will rub with a stone a little later, you can close the stretch film so that the water does not leave.

A day later, the plaster looked like this.

As already noted, the lion's share of success depends on the foundation.

The product is cast from concrete, for rigidity the reinforcing cage (knitted, step 20 cm), otherwise it would not stand, the mixture was used factory. Lime plaster, and tadelakt has just such, cannot be applied to a wooden base. And only on a well-absorbing base - waterproofing disappears. For example, in a hammam, two layers of tile adhesive pass through beforehand.

Able to imitate the texture of stone, wood or give the surface the sheen of silk. But in the decoration there are also natural mixtures for decorating walls, the application technology of which has not changed for hundreds of years. An example of such a material is tadelak - Moroccan lime plaster.

Combination of classic plastering and modern elements

Description

Tadelakt- This is a natural lime plaster, originally widespread in Morocco and other countries of northern Africa.

A distinctive feature of this coating is absolute moisture resistance and a smooth glossy surface. Tadelakt can be made in different colors, but as a rule, these are calm, not bright shades, characteristic of natural dyes used in the composition of the plaster.

Applies for wall decor in dry and wet areas, such as bathrooms, showers, baths (hammam), pools, baths. In addition to walls, sinks, countertops, steps, columns and other interior elements are also covered with Moroccan plaster in her homeland.

Thanks to polishing with soap, tadelakt is not afraid of water.

Properties:

  • has a purely mineral composition of natural origin;
  • does not contain synthetic components;
  • neutral smell;
  • maintains a comfortable microclimate in the room;
  • painted with alkali-resistant pigments in different colors;
  • has antiseptic and antifungal properties due to its high alkaline environment;
  • pollution resistance;
  • high hydrophobic properties.

Composition of tadelakt plaster includes hydraulic lime and mineral fillers: marble flour, quartz sand, and sometimes clay, diatomite (kieselguhr). Natural dyes (vegetable or mineral) are added to the dry mixture.

The final water-repellent layer is potassium soap based on olive oil. It enters into a chemical reaction with lime and forms a salt protective film on the surface.

Below in the photo you can see how the "Morocco" plaster looks in the interior.

Do-it-yourself Moroccan plaster is performed after preliminary preparation and the acquisition of certain practical skills.

The main difference between this method of creating an unusual, beautiful, durable surface is the use of materials that are quite affordable and the ability to create an ethnic-style interior, but light and as if filled with air.

The relief texture of Moroccan plaster and the use of two colors make it possible to create unique patterns, and the quality of the material makes the surface of walls designed in this way not only durable, but also very attractive.

Peculiarities

Lime gives plaster plasticity and antiseptic properties.

The preparation of a mixture to create decorative Moroccan plaster requires the use of certain components, including:

  1. Lime, which is the basis of the composition, which provides strong adhesion of particles and gives the plaster from Morocco antiseptic properties.
  2. Many pigments and various additives that give depth and saturation to the color of the coating.
  3. Natural wax and pure linseed oil, thanks to which tadelakt (Moroccan plaster) has excellent water-repellent properties.
  4. Protection against moisture is provided by the coating and a thin, but very durable film formed by the interaction of polishing soap and lime base.

Wax makes the coating resistant to water

No less important is the fact that tadelakt is created using two layers that are clearly visible on the surface of the walls.

Preparatory and basic or embossed, they have a variety of colors and shades, which makes each newly created surface special and unique in its own way.

The peculiarity of the composition and its complexity are associated with the selection of the highest quality substance that protects the surface from moisture.

Many experts prefer to use wax prepared by their own hands. If there is no experience in performing this operation, then it is worth purchasing a ready-made wax, as this is an essential component of a high-quality coating. Moroccan plaster for a long time does not lend itself to deformation and destruction under the influence of temperature differences in the room, changes in air humidity. It is resistant to mechanical damage, so it becomes an adornment of spacious halls and living rooms, bedrooms and offices.

Decorating bedrooms, dining rooms and even spacious bathrooms with Moroccan plaster on the walls is possible due to the fact that this material is one of the environmentally friendly, not hazardous to human health. Indeed, in its composition there are only natural natural components and there are absolutely no chemical additives.

Today, many use tadelakt in the form of a ready-made composition, but experienced craftsmen prepare the solution on their own, strictly observing certain proportions of lime and sand, preparing wax with their own hands, which will not only protect the surface from the negative effects of moisture, but also give it a glossy sheen.

Technology

The coating is applied in small areas

Applying Moroccan plaster to the walls is a laborious process that requires patience and diligence. Despite the fact that the surface of the walls does not require special preparation, the work itself must be done very carefully and carefully.

The finished composition is applied to a small section of the wall, since tadelakt requires careful processing of each applied layer. Otherwise, the surface will not differ in such qualities as strength and resistance to moisture.

To perform the work, you will need a dry mix, into which water is added strictly according to the instructions and thoroughly mixed with a construction mixer. Before starting to make tadelakt, the walls are covered with a layer of tile adhesive, penetrating primer or concrete contact. The choice depends on the quality of the surface. These compounds provide maximum adhesion of the plaster to the wall.

You can work with the old layer of plaster without waiting for drying

The thickness of the layer applied on a clean and dry wall can be up to 5 mm and there is no need to carefully level it. The first base layer is applied with a plastic or wooden spatula, not achieving a 100% even surface, but trying to avoid strong drops.

You should not wait for the composition to dry completely. The second layer can be applied after 10-12 hours, but they work with it immediately, without waiting for the composition to harden. Before starting work, in the process of preparing the mixture, the required amount of color is introduced into it to obtain the desired color or shade. Some masters achieve the desired result by mixing several colors.

When starting coloring, you need to remember that you won’t be able to create exactly the same shade again, so it’s worth preparing such an amount of solution to cover the surface with a relief pattern so that it is not only enough, but also a little left.

The textured layer is created with a trowel

The most popular method of applying Moroccan plaster is facing. A trowel or a natural sea sponge is applied to the surface of the composition in the container where it was prepared, and a textured layer is created by touching with a slight pressure and a sharp separation.

Then, with light movements, it is as if they are trying to smooth out all the bumps, but such movements should be very light.

The pattern he created also depends on the direction of movement of the master's hand.

Perhaps the most time-consuming process is grouting the surface with basalt stone. Circular movements with a small galloon continue until the stone begins to slide on a glossy surface. Having achieved the desired result, you can proceed to the final stage of the work. For a master class on applying plaster, see this video:

The entire surface is treated with oil and soap, and then carefully polished. Wax is then applied to which gold leaf can be added to create a veined effect. The last operation is surface polishing. Here you need an angle grinder and a soft nozzle that leaves no marks.
