Thinking about how to modify the look of your car at minimal cost, while standing out from your classmates quite strongly, the thought often comes to mind - repaint the rims. After all, it is quite budgetary, and the effect is quite strong and catches the eye (although a lot depends on the chosen color). This does not require any changes to the documents, which is important.

You can paint the rims by contacting a specialized workshop. However, with this approach, budgeting immediately becomes less noticeable. Considering the relief of the part, as well as its dimensions, it is quite safe to say that painting stamped discs with your own hands is quite possible. Even if there is a minimum of equipment.

Moreover, you can do it on your own no worse than they will do it in the workshop - you only need to follow the technology, attentiveness and accuracy. When everything is done correctly, then after a while the paint will not begin to “peel off”, which can be observed if the technology is violated.

How it works in production

In the production of discs, they are covered with a special enamel, which then hardens at high temperature in a special oven (where the parameters are strictly controlled). In garage conditions, repeating such a process is quite problematic, and there is no need - after all, the factory layer will already perform the necessary protection functions.

In general, there are various options for painting stamped discs. In workshops, as a rule, they repeat the factory cycle, or use powder coating with electrostatic spraying. However, this is also difficult in garage conditions. It is better to use the usual approach with a spray gun and ordinary (preferably acrylic) car enamel.

Simple Options

It is best to use an airbrush and a compressor for coating. It is good if this equipment is already available, or it can be borrowed for a while. However, if it is not there, then it will be clearly more expensive to purchase it than to use the services of specialists.

But there is another option when specialized equipment is not required - paint in aerosol cans. True, some shades, when using this method, can turn out to be paler than when using the classic version. However, this is almost imperceptible and may not be a significant factor.

You can also use standard paint, but use a swab instead of a sprayer. With a certain skill, it will turn out no worse than with a spray gun. True, it will take more time.

Getting Started

First of all, you need to acquire the necessary tools and materials. Among them:

  • The paint itself (maybe with varnish), and how to apply it;
  • Primer matching the paint;
  • Sandpaper with a small grit.

Training

The temptation is great to paint the wheels without removing the rubber from them, or even without dismantling them from the car at all. But do not be led by laziness - the procedures for protecting elements that do not need to be painted will take more time. Yes, it will be problematic to paint the inside of the disks. And this will already lead to ambiguous results - everything will look good from a distance, but up close ...

The disc itself must be carefully inspected for damage. If there are cracks and other damage to the metal, it must be replaced. It is better to replace it, because. repair will not restore the required strength to the product responsible for safety.

Then we inspect the disk for factory defects in the coating - if there are bubbles, bumps - then they must be leveled with sandpaper with a medium grain. At the end of this procedure, we matte the entire surface of the disk using sandpaper. This will allow the new paint to adhere securely to the old coating.

Primer

Here is the first procedure that requires the use of an airbrush, spray can or swab. We apply the first layer of primer, depending on the tool used, we proceed as follows:

After applying the first layer, you must allow it to dry, or dry sufficiently. After we inspect the disc - if the scratches from sandpaper are not visible and the surface is completely painted over, then we proceed directly to painting. If there are defects, then repeat the priming, applying a second layer.

At the end, it is necessary to allow the soil layer to dry completely.

Painting

Before painting, if automobile paint is used for an airbrush, then we dilute it in the required consistency. There is a certain scope here - it is best to practice on a test surface, which can be used as an ordinary sheet of drawing paper.

Then we apply the first layer, proceeding in the same way as when priming. Then we let it dry and carefully examine it for full staining (needs good lighting). If there are unpainted areas left, then apply a second layer.

When the desired result is obtained, we either finish the work or varnish it. Varnishing is carried out in exactly the same way as painting, the main thing is to be careful and prevent smudges, because the varnish is transparent, which reduces the level of control.

After completing all the procedures, we dry the discs, according to the recommendations of the paint manufacturers. And only after that we mount them back and enjoy the views of others.

Stamped discs, despite the presence of a powerful competitive analogue - cast, are very popular among domestic motorists. This is due to the availability, reliability, practicality and high resistance to various aggressive influences, adverse external factors. Repair and restoration of such discs is cheaper than cast ones, and the service life with proper care is almost unlimited.

Painting stamped wheels is not just a whim of lovers of all kinds of tuning. Complex processing and subsequent coloring of the discs allows you to significantly extend the service life, save on vehicle maintenance, and also give it individuality.

Painting discs - features and stages of work

Preparatory work is one of the most important stages in the processing of stamped discs. The final result depends on the quality and thoroughness of this process. Sandblasting will remove organic and inorganic contaminants, rust, corrosion even from hard-to-reach areas, prepare surfaces for the subsequent application of primer and paintwork material.

Our specialists perform not just tuning of iron disks, but high-tech diagnostics and, if necessary, comprehensive repairs, which prevent premature wear of the spare part.

Direct painting of stamped discs involves the phased implementation of the following activities:

  • Surface cleaning - sandpaper, grinder, rust converter are used for this;
  • Applying a primer - in two or three layers, followed by drying;
  • Painting stamped disks VAZ or any other car model;
  • Lacquering - for best results in two or three layers.

It is very important to wait for the complete drying of each layer of paints and varnishes. Due to the fact that we use only high-quality coatings of the latest generations, the process of drying and processing disks does not take much time. At the request of the client, powder coating of stamped wheels can be performed in two colors or in non-standard colors, for example, “under gold” or “silver”.

Thinking about how to improve the look of their car without spending a lot of money and making the car stand out, many motorists decide to paint the rims. Indeed, from such a procedure a noticeable effect is obtained, which depends, first of all, on the chosen color. Also, the advantage of painting is the absence of the need for official registration, as is the case with body painting.

Painting of steel rims suitable for any car, it can decorate an expensive foreign car, and an old domestic car. A wide range of colors will emphasize the individuality of each car and its owner.

Service painting of stamped wheels

Specialists for this procedure use modern powder paints, which create a fairly even and durable coating. Powder-coated discs become more resistant to sub-zero and plus temperatures, their paint does not fall off, and you can completely forget about burnout. Powder coating will protect the wheels from the effects of corrosion, scratches will be a thing of the past.

First, defects are removed by sandblasting, phosphating will protect the wheels from rust, and several layers of powder paint will make the wheels more durable.

In the service center, it is distinguished by process reliability and high-quality results. Each customer will be able to find the color that best suits the car.

Benefits of hiring specialists

At first glance, painting stamped rims seems like a fairly simple process, and many even believe that doing it yourself can save money. But it's not. After painting with your own hands, after a year or two, the procedure will need to be repeated, and this is an additional cost of personal funds. Painting by the hands of professionals will pass without defects, the wheels will emphasize the design of the car. The result will hold securely for many years, so painting stamped wheels, price, which you will need to pay only once, is a better offer for car owners.

Good painting requires not only new equipment, but also reliable specialists who can reliably protect the disc from the bad influence of natural conditions. This paint will last you for many years.

It is generally accepted that stamped wheels only spoil the appearance of the car. Therefore, most motorists prefer hubcaps as a way out. But there is another, no less interesting and reliable solution. Painting stamped wheels will give a completely new look to your car.

In this case, it is not at all necessary to contact a specialized workshop. You can do everything with your own hands. This will require some equipment and supplies, as well as the phased implementation of all the necessary processes.

Equipment and consumables

So, to complete the work, you need:

Basic materials and equipment

  1. Airbrush with compressor;
  2. Drill with a special nozzle;
  3. Sandpaper;
  4. Primer for discs;
  5. Paint (in the absence of an airbrush, an aerosol at the rate of 2-3 cans per wheel);
  6. Solvent;
  7. masking tape;
  8. Rags.

Do-it-yourself painting is done using a spray gun and a compressor. In their absence, you can use ordinary spray cans. In addition to paint, it is necessary to prepare a primer, sandpaper and, preferably, have a drill with a special nozzle for metal brushes.

Before proceeding directly to work, the condition of the disc is assessed for cracks, scratches and other damage, as well as rust.

Main stages

Painting stamped wheels is practically no different from painting a car body. It is carried out in several stages. If the sequence is followed correctly, a good result is guaranteed. Below are the main types of work that needs to be done:

  1. Preparation of equipment and materials;
  2. Preparation of stamped discs;
  3. soil application;
  4. Painting;
  5. Applying varnish.

Working with a drill with a nozzle

Preparing for painting

Painting stamped discs involves a preparatory stage. The surface must be cleaned of dirt, possibly rust or old coatings. To do this, use an electric drill with a nozzle, as well as sandpaper. During the cleaning process, the disc is wetted several times with water. At the end of this stage, the disc is washed again, degreased and dried. Only then can you move on to further steps.

Primer

Before you start applying paint to the surface, it is necessary to prime it so that the painting of steel discs is of high quality. The primer is applied in several layers (usually two or three). After the last layer has dried, it is necessary to process the surface with sandpaper so that it is even.

When doing all this work with your own hands, it is important to remember that the break between applying each layer can be from 4 to 6 minutes.

Paint application

There are the following options for applying paint - using a spray gun with a compressor and the use of aerosols. Naturally, those who do not have the appropriate equipment will use cans. If painting is done by hand without removing the tire, the first step is to make sure that the paint does not get on the rubber. This is what masking tape is used for.

As noted above, painting an iron disk can be done using an airbrush. Working with a brush is not suitable, since the disc has a rather complex structure and the coating, in this case, will not always be uniform.

In the absence of an airbrush, you can use aerosol cans. The distance to the disk should be at least 20-25 centimeters. The paint is applied in several layers in stages. After completing each of them, you must wait for drying in order to proceed to the next. To speed up the process, you can use, for example, a household hair dryer.

After completing this stage, you can start varnishing the surface. Lacquering follows the same principle as applying paint. Several layers with pauses between each for drying. Lacquer in the future will protect the paint from the effects of aggressive environments and keep the result of work longer.

Welcome!
Painting - it gives not only a beautiful look to some particular part, but also saves the part (If it is metal) from corrosion, in addition, depending on what color the part will be painted, its heating in hot weather depends very much, let's take black color, for example, if you have already driven a car covered in black more than once in the heat, then you can imagine how hot it is inside, especially when the car sits in the sun for a long time, the same white color, on the contrary, does not attract the sun's rays and get into such a car in the heat, more or less pleasant.

Note!
To paint stamped discs, you will only need to buy: Two cans of primer, but you will only need to take exactly the color in which the wheels will be painted (If there is no such color, then at least close to it), as well as a can of paint will be needed, white spirit, a couple of rags, one of which should be clean and the second should be more or less and necessarily a room and, of course, warm weather outside, we categorically do not recommend doing this in moisture (The exception is when the garage is heated and you leave the discs in it to lie, before they dry out), so that the work goes faster and with pleasure, take assistants with you, divide the disks among themselves and finish the work much faster and by the way, don’t forget about the skins, they will also come in handy!

Summary:

How to paint stamped wheels with your own hands?

Note!
If you are planning to paint anything (In our case, these are disks), consider the fact that the surface on which the paint will be applied must be fenced off from dust and similar substances, so it is better to carry out all operations in the garage, even if it is summer outside, there is no you need to apply paint, you can remove it, but you need to apply it to the room, where there is no dust, no dirt, no wind, nothing like that, and then the paint will lie well and will not start flying off over time!

1. To begin with, you will need to remove the wheels if they are on the car (We described how to remove the wheels Already in three articles, you can find all these articles using the search on our website), if you do not have the opportunity to separate the tires from the disks, then in this case, wrap all the rubber with adhesive tape (But this operation will need to be performed only after cleaning the discs from paint, point 2) so that it does not get dirty when painting, or make such a device (see photo below) from two cardboard boxes and then you won’t have to spend too much time on adhesive tape.

2. We turn to cleaning, it is very, very difficult to completely remove all the paint, especially if you work with ordinary skins, so if this happened, then in order not to waste a lot of time, make sure that the paint peels off a little and becomes smooth (see photo below) this will be enough, we will explain in detail how to work with the skin:

Firstly, you will need to buy it, there are many different types of skins (And its real name is “Sandpaper”), but they differ in grain size (The smaller the number of the skin, the coarser the grain will be and vice versa), to remove the paint, take a rougher skin, consult with the sellers, they will give you advice on which one is better to choose, but after cleaning the metal with a rough skin, it will become unpleasant to the touch and the paint will not fall on it as well as it should be, so in order not to was, take an even less rough skin, with which you will complete the work, making the metal near the disk smooth.

And in a nutshell, let's say how to erase the paint with a sandpaper, in general, you will need water (It is best to pour it a little bit into a bucket and, as it gets dirty, pour and pour new water into the bucket) and of course the skins themselves, remember the most important thing, they are constantly wet should be and notice, wet and not wet, that is, you will still need to dip the skin in water, but as soon as you take it out, immediately shake it well so that the main part of the water flies off the skin, and this is necessary in order for the skin to work more successfully, since it moves much better in moisture than on a dry surface and does not scratch so much, and in fact, get to work, namely, rub the disc until it becomes like it was shown approximately in the photo above.

3. There is another way, we are talking about cleaning the paint, for its implementation you will need a specialist. paint remover, it will most likely be in the same store where you will buy paint, this liquid is sold in two types, the first type is in cans, the second type is in a jar, it is best to take the second type, because it corrodes better all the paint (Much better), it is applied with a brush, but it is better to take it in spray cans when there is work to be done with able-bodied places, to which it is really much difficult to crawl with a hand and a brush.

Note!
In the photo above you see how the same special is applied. liquid on the disk and after a while, the paint corrodes (see small photo), of course, not all of it will peel off, but then it will be easier to remove the paint after such processing, and if you also have a drill in the garage with special . with a metal nozzle (see photo below), then turn it on and walk over the entire disc and in less than 5 minutes you will completely remove the paint from the disc!

4. When the paint is removed, you will need to use a clean rag and white spirit, degrease the entire disk with it, dirt and dust should not remain on it, then wipe the white spirit with a more or less clean rag, wait a while until it dries (5-10 minutes) and start applying the primer, do everything at a distance and do not hold the primer can in one place for too long (Drive it), so that there are no jambs at the beginning, practice on the cardboard, just try to paint it without streaks, it won’t work, try again, understand the most important principle and what distance should be, if the next cardboard box turned out fine, start painting the discs, do not forget to observe the interval between touch-ups (Applied the first word, wait 10-15 minutes until it dries and apply next immediately), after several layers of primer have been applied and wait until it dries, apply the paint itself, it is applied in the same way as the primer, with an interval m and with layers, having applied several layers, wait until everything dries (How long the paint will dry is indicated on the can) and you can install the wheels back on the car and drive.

Note!
At the very end, when the paint dries a little bit (although an hour will pass from the last application), the disc can be varnished in addition (It is also sold in spray cans), so it will shine and an additional protective layer will be created, due to which the disc will not start so quickly rot as it will be without varnish!
