Water bodies

Not many gardeners know about such a vegetable as lobo or Chinese radish. Lobo is very common in Asian countries, it is also grown in the Far East, but in the middle zone of our homeland, few people have heard of Chinese radish.

As for the taste, the lobo is softer than the usual radish. The fruits of this Asian culture contain many vitamins, trace elements, carbohydrates, proteins, mineral salts such as magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, iodine, iron, sodium. Regular consumption of Chinese radish is very beneficial for health, as it improves metabolism, helps to eliminate cholesterol, salts, and toxins from the body.

Chinese radish has large enough fruits that can be oval, round or cylindrical. It is a pleasure to grow it, since the plant is unpretentious. The seeds of this radish germinate at a temperature of plus 4 degrees, and root crops grow well at a temperature of 18 degrees.

To grow good quality fruits, you should know that Chinese radish should be planted in the second half of summer, and not in early spring, like many summer cottages. In the middle lane, the most favorable period for planting lobo is the beginning of July; in the southern regions, planting can be carried out until the end of September. Chinese radish loves moisture very much and is demanding for watering, especially when increased growth of root crops begins. If the soil is not sufficiently moistened, the roots will become bitter and tasteless.

Lobo loves fertile soil, which is filled with organic matter, but manure should not be applied to light soils, since the fruits will become tasteless from it.

Popular varieties of Chinese radish:

Margelanskaya;
Severyanka;
Glow;
Elephant fang;
Pink ring.

Chinese radish is a plant of the cabbage family, which is a root vegetable. This plant is also known as the forehead. The Chinese (or Margelan) radish received such a non-sound name due to its wide distribution in China, Japan, Uzbekistan, Korea and the Far East. The most common varieties of this vegetable are the raspberry ball and elephant tusk.

The loba has many similarities with the daikon, the plants differ only in the duration of the growing season. Chinese radish fully develops within 1-2 years. In the first year, the plant can form leaves and one root vegetable weighing up to 500 grams. In the second year of life, the forehead can bloom and give seeds, but there are some subspecies of Chinese radish that live only 1 year and during this period they have time to give both fruits and seeds.

Chinese radish varieties affect the type of root crop grown. It comes in a variety of shapes, from round to spindle-shaped, and in varying colors. The forehead is red, white, yellow, purple and green. The same variety of shades can be found in the pulp of a plant. Depending on the variety, the duration of the growing season of the root crop can be from 70 to 120 days.
Chinese radish can be eaten fresh, because, compared to its European counterpart, it is not so bitter due to the absence of a large amount of radish oil in its composition. The taste of the forehead does not resemble a radish, but a radish.

The composition and useful properties of the root crop

Why is Margelan radish so called

This radish has many names. It is called green because it often does. It all depends on the mode in which the cultivation is carried out. If the root crop is formed completely submerged in the soil, then it remains white. It becomes green only when it is grown in the sun, leaving only the root itself in the ground.

This plant has another name - lobo or forehead. This is the Russified version of the name of the root crop. The Chinese put radishes, radishes and carrots into this company. Since this vegetable came to Russia for the first time from China, a name similar to a female name stuck behind it.

What is included in the Chinese forehead radish

The popularity of Chinese radish is determined by its taste and ability to store for a long time. However, lobo also has one more undoubted advantage - cheapness. In winter, when vitamins and plant diversity are so needed, green radish is available even to students trying to live on a scholarship.

Usually, the cheapness of a product is associated with its low nutritional value. Margelan radish refutes this stereotype. It includes:

  1. vitamins A, C, B6, B1, PP;
  2. carotene (provitamin A);
  3. lysozyme;
  4. pantothenic acid;
  5. calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium;
  6. glucosides;
  7. essential oils;
  8. amino acids.

Why is Margelan radish useful?

  • The benefits of lobo are undeniable. It should be eaten by everyone who has no contraindications, and its consumption should be increased by those who suffer from: diseases of the gastrointestinal tract associated with decreased secretion; frequent colds; atherosclerosis; hypertension; arthrosis; radiculitis; gout.
  • Margelan radish cleanses the body, ridding it of toxins, free radicals, and removes excess cholesterol. She is even credited with the ability to remove stones from the kidneys and gallbladder.
  • Since green radish is rich in iron, it should be consumed for various forms of anemia. It is good in this case to make salads from a mixture of grated vegetables - carrots, lobo, beets, horse parsley.
  • However, the main value of this root vegetable lies precisely in the ability to cook dishes in winter without heat treatment, while retaining all the useful properties.

Since the lobo is well stored, it is not customary to preserve it, but in vain. For the sake of filling the can, I somehow added pieces of this radish to pickled squash and zucchini. And she didn’t regret it - pickled lobo with its piquant taste stood out favorably against the general background of assorted vegetables.

And potassium strengthens the heart muscle and stabilizes blood pressure.

Green radish is also used in dietetics, bringing significant benefits. If you prepare several salads, which contain this product, then the body will easily endure fasting days, as it is supplied with all the necessary vitamins. Fresh root vegetables are of great benefit to the body, but stewed or fried, they will add spice to the dish.

Due to the high content of vitamin C contained in the bark of the vegetable, it is not recommended to cut it off; it is better to rinse it thoroughly in water and eat it along with the pulp. Radish juice must be prepared from a root crop that has just been plucked from the garden bed, since then it contains the largest amount of vitamins.

Who shouldn't eat green radish?

Since the miraculous composition of the radish is confirmed by scientific research, the use of a root vegetable as a medicine is possible only after consulting a doctor. For example, it is categorically impossible to use green radish in conjunction with food additives.

People who suffer from diabetes should pay great attention to buying a vegetable out of season, during this period its intake is not desirable. Also, it should not be consumed frozen. It should be remembered that in addition to all the useful properties of the Margelanskaya radish, it has a number of contraindications and in some cases it can seriously harm. This advice should be heeded by people who have chronic diseases.

So, for example, the skin of people with allergies will be covered with a rash, accompanied by itching. This reaction occurs with the essential oils that are found in the root vegetable. In such cases, in order to minimize the harm of green radish, it is necessary to immediately take antihistamines.

Expectant mothers suffering from increased uterine tone should use this root vegetable with caution. Also, it is not recommended to lean on this product for pregnant women if there is a threat of miscarriage, since the essential oils it contains accumulate in the body and can negatively affect the development of the fetus.

It is strongly discouraged to take green radish for people after surgical strip surgery. And the use of juice in combination with honey is not recommended for people with poor blood clotting. Also, green radish can harm those who have problems with the digestive system. The acrid taste of the vegetable irritates the stomach and intestinal mucosa already affected by the ulcer, increases gas production and causes severe bouts of pain.

The greatest benefit will be brought by a root crop grown in your summer cottage. He is not whimsical to care for, and it is not difficult to grow him. It should be noted that if the root crop is too large or soft, this means that it is overripe and cannot boast of the presence of valuable substances. Margelan radish should be taken in small amounts and combined with other foods to be beneficial and not harmful.

Chinese radish is a biennial or annual plant. This root vegetable belongs to the Cabbage family. It is most actively grown in Japan, Korea and China. In our country, Chinese radish grows well in the Far East.

The most common varieties are Red Radish (crimson ball) and Lobo (elephant tusk).

Vegetable appearance

The shape of the "body" depends on the variety. It is round, spindle-shaped and elongated (oval). The color of the root vegetable can be white, green, yellow, red and purple. It also sometimes happens and then the vegetable has a double and sometimes triple color (yellow-green, purple-white, and so on). The pulp also has various colors and transitional shades. Usually, its color depends on the color of the peel and can be either richer or lighter. Chinese radish weighs from 250 grams to 1 kilogram.

Basically, the plant is grown for 2 years. In the first year, leaves are formed (usually their number does not exceed 16 pieces) and a root crop. It has a low weight (no more than 300 grams). In the second year, the radish begins to bloom and its seeds ripen. The root vegetable increases in size and weight.

Taste

These do not contain as much oil as in Russian ones. Due to this, it does not have a tangy aftertaste and bitterness. They contain many minerals and are rich in vitamins as well as various enzymes, fiber and essential oils. Thanks to this, they have a tender and juicy pulp.

The photo shows the Chinese Lobo radish, or elephant's tusk.

Growing

It is usually grown in the fields after picking cucumbers, tomatoes, legumes and potatoes. Planting a vegetable after other representatives of the Cabbage species is not recommended. If this is not taken into account, then the Chinese radish can be affected by the keel and other diseases inherent in this species. It can also be grown after garlic, onions and other early crops.

Before sowing, it is necessary to prepare the soil in a differentiated manner. For this, you can use mineral fertilizers and, if necessary, organic fertilizers, with the exception of manure. When using it, the Chinese loba radish cracks, is poorly stored and decays, and also becomes tasteless and often sick. The most suitable "organic" is humus. You can also use wood ash.

Sowing radish is best done in the 2nd half of July. If the Chinese radish was planted in the 1st half of the month, then there is a likelihood of overgrowth of root crops, which will entail a decrease in marketability. If the weather in the growing area is suitable, then it grows until November.

These varieties tolerate cold weather well, they begin to sprout at temperatures of 2-4 degrees Celsius above 0. At frosts down to -5 degrees, they do not freeze and do not die.

The radish should be watered abundantly and regularly, so it will give a good harvest.

An interesting fact: if you plant a Chinese radish in the last days of July or early August, then the amount of harvest will be greatly reduced, but marketability and preservation will improve.
