Garden equipment

The repair of heating pipelines must be approached responsibly. The durability and correct functioning of the system depends on the quality of materials and the strength of their installation. The market leaders in this area today are polypropylene materials, which are not inferior in strength to metal ones.

Polypropylene pipes began to be used for heating systems relatively recently. Prior to that, their place was taken by solid steel pipes. Such structures were connected by welding, were durable, but difficult to install and expensive to manufacture.

Polypropylene pipes have undergone a number of important metamorphoses in their short history. By itself, polypropylene does not have the heat resistance that the companies developing it were supposed to receive. That is why the first heat transfer systems with such pipes quickly fell into disrepair, and they began to be skeptical about the material itself.

At the moment, polypropylene pipes have been significantly improved. There are various models that are used for supplying cold and hot water, heating and drainage. When carrying out repairs, it is important to choose pipes that are designed for specific purposes, otherwise the structure will not be serviceable.

It is important! At the moment, there are many companies that produce and sell pipes for heating systems. It is advisable to buy pipes along with all components from official suppliers in specialized stores, since there are many low-quality fakes.

Varieties of PPR pipes

Polypropylene pipes are used in various fields, but not all are suitable for heating. In pursuit of cheap material, you might buy the wrong kind of pipes that can withstand hot water under pressure. It is important to be able to distinguish one type of pipe from another.

The classification of polypropylene pipes is as follows:

  • PP-N. This is the first generation of polypropylene pipes. This model has all the properties of the base material. PP-N are hermetically sealed and resistant to high pressure, in addition, they do not enter into chemical reactions. However, the melting of such a pipe can begin already at a temperature of 50 ͒С. Such pipes are used in the cold water supply system, ventilation and for industrial purposes;
  • PP-B. During the production of this type, the formula of the material was slightly changed. The pipes turned out to be stronger and more durable, but the temperature fluctuations still could not withstand. Such pipes have the advantages of the previous generation and, in addition, better tolerate hot temperatures. However, they are unsuitable for a heating system and even hot water supply. Such pipes are often used in the construction of sewers;
  • PP-R. In the production of these pipes, ethylene is used in addition to polypropylene. This allows them to withstand high temperature loads. In addition, such pipes are usually reinforced, which allows them to withstand temperatures above 100 ° C. Reinforced pipes PP-R are the most suitable option for a heating system.

If not so long ago, polypropylene pipes for heating were considered something exotic, but today such pipes are quite widespread, and the reviews about them are positive. Such material surpasses other similar materials in almost all its indicators. The main question that interests us is whether polypropylene pipes for heating can be used for heating systems.

Polypropylene pipes for heating

Features of this material

Is the use of polypropylene pipes effective in heating? If we take such a characteristic as density, then for polypropylene it is only 0.91 kg / cm 2. However, this material has good abrasion resistance and is quite hard. You don't have to worry that the abrasive particles in the coolant will quickly wear out the propylene pipes for heating.

The advantages of this material also include the following:

  • High resistance to various aggressive substances. The destruction of the surface of a polypropylene heating pipe can only be provoked by prolonged heating or exposure to a concentrated acid material. Polypropylene is also not afraid of pieces of slag and sand that are contained in the water.
  • The mechanical strength of polypropylene pipes will depend on the speed with which the force was applied. If the pipe is bent sharply, then, most likely, it will simply break. You can apply the same force, but in a gradual manner, and then the pipe will simply bend. Since operating loads will be directly related to linear expansion during heating, such loads will be applied to the material in a slow manner.

  • Polypropylene has good frost resistance. PP pipes for heating can withstand temperatures up to -15 degrees. However, when the heating system is operating, the temperature should drop to at least 0 degrees, and during normal operation it should coincide with the temperature of the coolant.
  • The material is also able to withstand high temperatures. It will start to melt at 160-170 degrees, and at 140 degrees it will only begin to soften.

Polypropylene is a material with a fairly high coefficient of thermal expansion. However, this is already a disadvantage of such a system as floor heating with plastic pipes.

Reinforcement

Reinforcement of pipes is the simplest solution to such a problem as thermal expansion. A material with a slightly lower coefficient of thermal expansion will play the role of a stabilizer and, as a result, thermal expansion may decrease five times.

There are two main methods of pipe reinforcement (examples in the photo):

  • With aluminum foil. An aluminum reinforced pipe is a sandwich of three glued layers, between which there is an aluminum interlayer. This layer is very thin. It is very important to pay attention to the quality of such pipes. And if the technology is violated, they will quickly begin to exfoliate.
  • PPR pipes for heating, fiberglass reinforced. Such pipes are of a monolithic type. The fiber layer is located directly in the thickness of the polypropylene pipe. Such pipes are good because they will not delaminate. Also, if you use a welded joint, then you will not need to clean the reinforcing layer.

The video shows how the reinforcement is carried out. Both types of reinforcement are suitable for heating systems. However, it must be remembered that the reinforcement will only reduce the thermal expansion of polypropylene, and not completely rid it of this property.

Heat carrier temperature

Surely everyone knows that rarely the temperature in the heating system corresponds to that specified in the regulatory documents. There are several main factors that affect the interaction of the temperature of the coolant and pipes:

  • Many manufacturers guarantee that heating from polypropylene pipes can withstand a coolant temperature of up to 95 degrees.
  • In our country, such a temperature of the coolant can be seen only in severe frosts. However, if the temperature in the heating system reaches 95 degrees, then in the heating pipeline it can reach 140 degrees.

Sometimes, for reasons such as severe frosts, violation of the temperature schedule, or for other reasons, the nozzle that regulates the temperature of the coolant in the system is pulled out of the elevator unit, and the suction is muffled. In this case, the water that comes from the heating main goes directly to the heating radiators and risers. It enters the system at a temperature that is not just dangerous for polypropylene, but destructive.

Selection criteria for polypropylene pipes

So, what should you pay attention to when choosing polypropylene pipes?

  1. Pressure

The marking of polypropylene pipes for heating type PN ** will have a direct relationship to the working pressure. The two numbers that follow the letters will tell you what maximum working pressure the product is designed for. Working pressure is indicated for a coolant temperature of 20 degrees. If your system has a coolant temperature of 80-90 degrees, then you can divide the value by three. The most popular pipes are labeled PN20.

  1. Temperature

The pipe marking will also tell us about what maximum temperature the polypropylene heating can withstand. For reinforced pipes, almost all manufacturers indicate temperatures from 90 to 95 degrees.

  1. Diameter

In order to calculate the required diameter, builders use very complex formulas. Moreover, factors such as heat load, the roughness coefficient of the material from which the polypropylene heating is made, and the temperature difference between the supply and return are taken into account.

On the practical side, you need to remember at least two simple rules:

  • In an apartment, during the distribution of heating, the polypropylene pipes that we use should not underestimate the clearance relative to such an element as a heating riser made of polypropylene pipes. In new buildings, risers from a pipe such as DU20 are most often used. This means that you will need to heat a private house with polypropylene pipes with an outer diameter of 2.6 cm. In stalinkas, where the risers are inch, it is better to use pipes with an outer diameter of 3.2 cm.

  • In a private house with a total area of over 250 sq. meters the most effective will be such a heating system as Leningrad. The ring will require a pipe with a diameter of 32-40mm. For inserting radiators, pipes with a diameter of 20-26mm are required.

So, for the installation of the heating system, you decided to opt for polypropylene pipes. If you simply go to the store without first "acquaintance" with them, you will come across the fact that they are, it turns out, different. Price, outer color of the pipe and in section: plain and with some kind of circular color changes. Let's try to deal with these nuances. The first thing that will clearly catch your eye will be the outer color of the pipe: white, gray or some other.

This is precisely where there is no difference - this is a purely design decision and does not in any way affect the quality of the pipe. Choose according to your taste (or mood)).

Today we can confidently say that polypropylene pipes are confidently and quickly replacing traditional metal counterparts (made of cast iron and steel) literally from all areas of water supply and sewerage. But the consumer is sometimes faced with a painful choice: how to buy the best polypropylene pipes? which company is the best polypropylene pipes? Wishing to facilitate this task, guided by the reviews of consumers and professionals (experienced installers), we have compiled a kind of rating of polypropylene pipes and collected brief characteristics of popular brands in a single article.

What are the best pipes?

The unanimous opinion of all construction forums, the owners of apartments and houses where polypropylene pipes are installed, as well as the installers themselves - German products are recognized as the undisputed leader in quality from the widest variety. Moreover, it is worth noting that all pipe manufacturers from Germany have earned only laudatory reviews. And the choice of a particular brand is most often based only on its availability in a particular region.

German brands of polypropylene pipes and fittings:

The characteristics of each brand are given in a separate thematic article.

Pipes made of polypropylene produced in the Czech Republic are considered to be a very decent product in terms of quality.

In third place in terms of quality characteristics, users put cheaper pipes and fittings made in Turkey.

Polypropylene pipes from Turkey are in demand in Russia

An even more budgetary option is Chinese and Russian products. From China, you can pay attention to such generally good brands as Dyzain and BLUE OCEAN. Russia is represented on the market by PRO AQUA brands; RVC; Heisskraft; Santrade; Polytec.

The next thing to know about polypropylene pipes is their property to increase in length when heated. Thus, an ordinary polypropylene pipe with an increase in temperature by 100º will become longer: +150 mm for every 10 meters. During operation, this elongation will be conspicuous. And when heated, straight pipes will take a wavy shape. We learned to deal with this shortcoming. To reduce thermal expansion, polypropylene pipes are reinforced.

Reinforced pipes

There are several types of reinforcement for polypropylene pipe products.

Fiberglass

Fiberglass-reinforced polypropylene pipes for heating are the best option. What are they? This is when there is a fiberglass layer inside the polypropylene layer. On the cross-section of the pipe, it looks a bit like the annual rings of a tree cut. Inside a layer of polypropylene, then a layer of fiberglass and outside again a layer of polypropylene. When using glass fiber reinforcement, the thermal expansion is reduced tenfold and is +15 mm per 10 meters.

Also, polypropylene pipes are reinforced with aluminum. Basically, such reinforcement is external. When there is a layer of aluminum on top of polypropylene, which prevents thermal expansion. In addition to external reinforcement with aluminum, the following combination is also used: inside a thin layer of polyethylene - inside aluminum reinforcement - outside polypropylene. Moreover, the aluminum layer is not solid, but with the letter C.

From the above, it is clear that for heating and hot water supply systems, it is necessary to choose reinforced polypropylene pipes. Accordingly, unreinforced pipes from this material are used for cold water supply, where there are no large temperature drops.

A few words about installation. Installation of polypropylene pipes is very simple, but requires the use of special equipment: a socket welder and a set of special nozzles, special pliers or a pipe cutter (can be replaced with a saw for metal), a shaver (for pipes with aluminum reinforcement) and a chamfer. And if you have certain skills, you can independently cope with the installation of polypropylene pipes. The easiest to install is an unreinforced polypropylene pipe. The pipe, which is reinforced with fiberglass, is almost not inferior to it. Fiberglass melts along with polypropylene, resulting in a reliable bond. If there is an outer layer of aluminum, then it is completely cleaned off at the place where the pipe enters the fitting. With internal reinforcement - the matter is more complicated. A special tool is needed to clean out the inner layer of aluminum and seal the pipe.

Additional benefits of polypropylene

  • Long service life. Manufacturers claim that their products have a lifespan of 25 to 50 years. Of course, subject to operating requirements.
  • The pipes have low thermal conductivity. Waste heat loss is minimal.
  • Extremely resistant to temperature changes. In the stated ranges, they do not lose their shape and structure.
  • Possibility of self-assembly. A couple of hands-on lessons won't hurt, though.
  • Polypropylene pipes do not conduct electricity. There will be no unpleasant "surprises" in the form of an electric shock.
  • The throughput is 20% higher than that of metal pipes.
  • Low weight of pipes. The weight of polypropylene pipes is nine times less than that of metal ones.
  • The material is highly resistant to corrosion and inert to chemical reactions.
  • Easy to operate and maintain.

The price range of polypropylene pipes for heating is very diverse. So, one meter of Ekoplastik polypropylene pipe will cost about 1.9 EUR / running meter. For a meter of REHAU pipe, you will have to pay 4.5 EUR. The cost of pipes of Chinese origin is around 1 USD per 1 meter of length. So the choice of quality, specifications and prices is very diverse.

Which polypropylene pipes are better - an overview of types and manufacturers

In the modern market for construction products, pipes made of polymeric materials are presented in a wide variety. At the same time, a large segment belongs to products made of polypropylene of domestic and foreign production. Many consumers of such systems are interested in which polypropylene pipes are better.

Characteristics of polypropylene pipe products

To make the right choice of polypropylene pipes, you need to familiarize yourself with the advantages of products made from this material:

  1. Resistance to destructive corrosive processes. This property allows pipelines to maintain their original qualities for many years. The service life is 3-4 times higher than that of metal products.
  2. Immunity to chemically active media and excellent permeability.
  3. Frost resistance. When operating in severe frost conditions, polypropylene pipelines demonstrate a high degree of reliability - they are not prone to rupture.
  4. An insignificant level of noise, which is characteristic of polypropylene pipes for heating structures - the surrounding people practically do not hear them.
  5. The minimum value of the head loss of the moving fluid.
  6. Saving thermal energy from hot coolant in polypropylene pipelines reaches 10 - 20%, in contrast to metal products.
  7. Safety for human health.
  8. Reliability of the resulting connections with ease of installation work.
  9. A wide variety of connecting elements - fittings. This allows you to lay out structures of any complexity.

The main types of polypropylene pipes

To solve the problem of which polypropylene pipes to choose, information about what types they are will help.

Polypropylene tubular products are:

Single layer polypropylene products

They are produced in the following types:

  1. Type 1 - PPH is produced from homopropylene. Such products are used for laying ventilation systems and industrial pipelines, when arranging cold water supply.
  2. Type 2 - PPB is produced from polypropylene block copolymer. The scope of use is the creation of floor heating systems and cold water mains, the production of high-impact fittings.
  3. Type 3 - PPR is made from polypropylene random copolymer. The area of application is water supply and heating.
  4. PPs pipes are a kind of flame retardant special polypropylene.

Multilayer reinforced pipes

To decide which polypropylene reinforced pipe is better, you need to know that

this type of tubular products allows:

  1. Reduce thermal elongation of thermoplastic products.
  2. Aluminum foil-reinforced tubular products can be smooth or perforated.

In addition, you should familiarize yourself with the types of pipes, depending on the method of reinforcement:

  1. On the outside there is a solid or perforated aluminum foil layer.
  2. The inner aluminum layer is located closer to the outer edge, and the perforated foil facilitates the bonding of the layers without the use of glue.
  3. Fiberglass is used.
  4. The inner layer is made of a composite mixture, which includes polypropylene and glass or fiberglass. See also: "What are the types of polypropylene pipes, production materials and areas of use."

Overview of companies producing polypropylene pipes

According to experts analyzing the pipe products market, the rating of polypropylene pipes looks like this:

  1. The leading place belongs to the products of companies from Germany, including Pexay, Akwatherm, Banninger, Wefatherm.
  2. In second place are Czech polypropylene pipes from EKOPLASTIC.
  3. Slightly lower in the ranking are the products of the Turkish firms Pilsa, FIRAT, TEBO, Valtek and Vesbo, Jakko.
  4. The fourth place was taken by the pipes of the companies from China - Blue Ocean and Dyzain.
  5. The fifth place went to products manufactured in Russia.

Russian pipes

Since the products are of good quality, many domestic buyers are interested in which company is the best for polypropylene pipes.

Russian pipe products PRO AQUA are able to withstand temperatures up to 95 degrees. It is not subject to corrosion, chemicals and many years of service. Products of the RVK brand are reinforced with aluminum, so they are used in the arrangement of hot water supply and heating systems (read: “Characteristics of RVK polypropylene pipes, advantages, areas of use”).

Heisskraft pipes are also capable of meeting consumer demand. Politek products are distinguished by an average level of quality - with the same wall thickness, they deform during the compression process. See also: “Stages of polypropylene pipes production, used raw materials and technologies”.

Pipe products from China

As a rule, Chinese products are of poor quality. The exception applies to Blue Ocean products from a UK subsidiary and Dyzain PPP brand products.

Pipes from manufacturers from Turkey

The TEBO company produces polypropylene pipes with a diameter of 20-160 millimeters for the creation of heat and water supply systems. The products perfectly resist the effects of chemically aggressive environments. For the arrangement of water supply structures, there is a separate product line - PN10 and PN20. To create heat supply systems, pipes are used that are reinforced with aluminum or fiberglass.

Also noteworthy are Turkish polypropylene pipes Pilsa, Novaplast, Vesbo, VALTEC and others, which are distinguished by a high degree of strength, wear resistance and elasticity.

Czech products made of polypropylene

A well-known brand of polypropylene pipes manufactured in the Czech Republic is WAWIN Ecoplastik products. It occupies one of the leading places in the world market, since it is distinguished by the highest quality that meets all standards.

These pipes are used for the following purposes:

  • ventilation wiring, water supply;
  • creation of heat supply systems - central and laid under the floor;
  • for the arrangement of high-pressure cold water supply systems and low-pressure highways for centralized heat supply.

Pipes from the FV-Plast company, which have special aluminum inserts, differ in excellent characteristics. Thanks to this, the products of this brand are resistant to temperature extremes. It is used to lay water supply lines, underfloor heating systems and heat energy supply. Read also: “Production and use of acrylic pipes, characteristics”.

STABI pipes with an aluminum insert are used for underfloor installation of pipelines for conveying hot water.

German polypropylene pipes

Products from German manufacturing companies are deservedly considered the undisputed leader among high-quality pipe products.

For the installation of water supply and heating structures, Wefatherm pipes are used. Their advantages lie in the presence of a perfectly smooth inner surface, which allows you to maintain the initial pressure in the pipeline to the maximum. It is possible to combine different types of pipes, since the company produces a wide range of fittings.

The manufacturer Akwatherm occupies one of the leading places in the production of polymer products for underfloor heating systems, fire extinguishing, air conditioning, water and heat supply systems.

If you need to purchase reliable products for arranging heating structures or hot water supply lines under pressure up to 20 bar, experts advise paying attention to German polypropylene Faser pipes. They enter the trading network in green with a diameter of 16-250 millimeters and white with a cross-section of 20-40 millimeters.

Rehau pipes, which are used for indoor and outdoor laying of utility lines in residential buildings and industrial facilities, do not need to be recommended. But for the installation of products of this company, you need to own professional work skills.

When choosing pipe products, you need to purchase products of the line that is suitable for laying a specific type of pipeline. For example, if you need to equip a system that supplies hot water, you should use pipes that are designed specifically for such highways and then there will be no serious problems during operation.

Which polypropylene pipes are better: 6 little things that can determine the fate of the future pipeline

Range of polypropylene pipes

Everyone has probably heard about the victorious march of polypropylene in the field of plumbing. But which polypropylene pipes are best used in a given situation? For example, when I first came to a specialized store for this particular product, I was puzzled by the rather extensive number of offers. So I propose to deal with the most essential criteria, which, due to inexperience, can be considered insignificant trifles.

Some general characteristics

Why is it worth switching from the same metal to polypropylene at all? Why are plastic pipes better than cast iron or metal? Before delving into their varieties, you need to have an idea of their advantages:

  • Complete absence of corrosive processes... Under the condition of constant contact with water, a quite significant quality;
  • Absolutely smooth walls, thanks to which the pressure retains its intensity for as long as possible. In addition, there is no effect of the formation of build-ups, which makes metal analogs unusable;

Smooth inner surface guarantees strong head

  • Almost complete no noise emitting the transported liquid;
  • Relatively low price... This is one of the most important advantages due to which most owners choose plastic pipes;
  • Simple instruction installation work. With the help of a pipe soldering iron, reliable sealed joints are easily and quickly created, since the melting point of the material in question is only 260 degrees Celsius above zero;

Soldering polypropylene pipes with your own hands using a special welding machine

  • No risk of ruptures as a result of freezing of the transported liquid, which is very important for external highways during winter periods;
  • A huge number of all kinds of connecting fittings that allow you to lay construction pipelines of any complexity;
  • Durability... The term of use of polypropylene exceeds 50 years.

The positive aspects of this material are obvious, but they can differ dramatically depending on the brand and type of pipes, so it is worth having an idea about these nuances.

What you should pay attention to

If you just come and order plastic pipes for yourself, then in the end you may encounter many problems during their operation or simply overpay where it is not required. To avoid such undesirable outcomes, you will be helped by understanding the meaning of some of the "little things" that you can find even during a visual inspection of the product:

Little thing # 1: the number of layers

In this context, we are talking about single-layer and multi-layer products. And here everything is simple:

  • Single layer polypropylene pipes are cheaper and are used to create most types of piping systems, but are not suitable for operation at high temperatures, since they begin to deform when heated to 70-90 degrees Celsius;
  • Multilayer due to the reinforcement, the samples are able to withstand much higher temperatures, although they are, accordingly, more expensive.

For the purpose of installing an apartment heating system, I recommend purchasing reinforced products. The fact is that in winter the temperature generated in boiler rooms can significantly exceed the threshold permissible for single-layer pipes.

Multilayer polypropylene pipes in the heating system

Trifle number 2: marking on single-layer pipes, which determines their more accurate composition

On all plastic pipes that have one layer, you can find certain designations by which you can judge their more detailed composition and recommended field of application:

Polypropylene structure diagram

  • High hardness;
  • Lack of resistance to low temperatures
  • Ventilation systems;
  • Industrial pipelines
  • Flexibility;
  • Frost resistance
  • Cold water supply systems;
  • Underfloor heating systems;
  • Manufacturing of impact resistant fittings and pipes
  • High strength;
  • Ability to withstand a short-term temperature jump up to +110 degrees Celsius;
  • Form recovery after defrosting;
  • High resistance to acids and alkalis;
  • Excellent sound insulation
  • Cold and hot water supply systems;
  • Underfloor heating systems;
  • Heating systems in private houses;
  • Compressed air systems

I recommend purchasing single-layer pipes with PPR marking for home use, since they have the best performance characteristics, and their cost is not much higher than their less practical counterparts.

Photos of products with PPR marking

Trifle # 3: Reinforcement Method

If you plan to use polypropylene products when installing a heating system in an apartment, then, as I noted above, you will need multi-layer reinforced samples.

They have greater rigidity and good resistance to high temperatures, for which, however, one has to come to terms with the increase in their cost, and in some cases also with additional difficulties when performing installation work, associated precisely with the need to eliminate reinforcement at the soldering point.

But even in this case, I was expected to choose from the two most common options:

  1. Pipe with foil-coated intermediate layer... If the foil is located close to the outer side of the product, then it is removed with the help of a shaver, but if it is closer to the inner side of the product, then the cut edge is butted to avoid metal contact with the transported liquid. In any case, additional work during welding is provided. In turn, such pipes are divided into the following types, depending on the structure of the reinforcing layer:
    • Perforated layer... This means that the foil has holes, and in the process of filling the blank with polypropylene, it seeps through them, creating a reliable connection without the use of glue;

Scheme of a polypropylene pipe with a perforated intermediate layer structure

    • Solid layer... In this case, there are three separate layers glued together;

Scheme of a polypropylene pipe with a solid intermediate layer structure

  1. Glass fiber reinforced pipe... In this case, the reinforcement is performed by adding fiberglass filler to the polypropylene. This approach has clear advantages:
    • No need to clean the pipe edge before welding it;
    • Increasing the stiffness factor of the product;
    • Reduction of the thermal expansion rate by 75%;
    • Monolithic structure... There is no division into layers in this case.

Polypropylene pipes with fiberglass of different diameters

Trifle number 4: marking that determines the pressure and temperature withstand by the pipe

Before choosing polypropylene pipes for laying a specific pipeline, you need to carefully read the designations starting with the letters PN. This "little thing" will tell you what conditions a particular product can withstand.

The classification of polypropylene pipes on this basis looks like this:

  • PN 10... Suitable for transportation cold water, the temperature of which does not exceed +20 degrees Celsius. Allowable pressure - up to 1 MPa;

Sample pipe marked PN 10

  • PN 16... It is already possible to use products here, both in cold and hot water supply, so they are able to withstand heating up to +60 degrees Celsius and pressure up to 1.6 MPa;

Sample pipe marked PN 16

  • PN 20... There is no problem with transportation of hot liquid, the temperature of which even reaches +95 degrees Celsius. The working pressure is 2 MPa;

Samples of pipes marked PN 20

  • PN 25... These are already reinforced samples used in heating systems... Withstand temperature jumps exceeding +95 degrees Celsius, and working pressure up to 2 MPa.

Cross-section of a pipe with PN 25 marking

With the increase in the number after the letters PN, not only the operational properties increase, but also the cost of the products, therefore, in order not to overpay, choose those pipes that exactly correspond to your plans. That is, for example, for a cold water supply system, there is absolutely no need to buy relatively expensive reinforced samples.

Little thing # 5: color

Here the opinions of experts differ. Some of them believe that the color of the pipes does not affect their technical characteristics in any way. But others reasonably note that such markings put into products by manufacturers should be taken into account. I am a reinsurer, so I take the side of the latter in this matter.

And this is what the color according to the manufacturer's version can tell:

  1. White:
    • Ability to withstand a pressure of 25 bar;
    • Cheapness;
    • Complete absence of corrosive processes;

White tube products

  1. Grey:
    • Heat resistance;
    • Long operational period;
    • Ecological cleanliness;
    • Excellent tightness;

Gray polypropylene pipes

  1. Black:
    • UV resistance;
    • High resistance to aggressive acids and alkalis;
    • Resistant to drying effect;
    • Increased strength parameters;

Black polypropylene tubular products

  1. Green... Cheap samples with a low threshold of working pressure, used, as a rule, for the implementation of a garden watering system.

Green polypropylene pipes are cheaper

As you can see, colored items can also tell some information, which, however, has a rather general appearance.

Trifle number 6: manufacturer

You can answer, they say, this is not a car or even household appliances, so that you can also follow the brand here. But only if you deal with the products of a well-known company, you can be sure that all the designations described above will correspond to reality.

With some of the same product of dubious origin, you may not pay attention to the marking at all, since it is most likely applied only to increase the cost.

Which polypropylene pipes are better: 6 nuances of product selection

Which polypropylene pipes are better: classification and types, instructions on how to choose, video and photos

Which company is better to choose polypropylene pipes?

Plastic plumbing systems have a number of advantages over metal ones. They are lightweight, strong, durable, affordable. But how to choose them? After all, polypropylene pipes from Wawin Ecoplastik have a wide assortment, and the Vostok manufacturer offers a low cost. To decide, we have prepared a detailed review of brands with all their advantages and disadvantages.

Rating of firms producing polypropylene pipes

The list is opened by recognized industry giants - German companies Banninger, Wefatherm, Aquatherm. The list of companies' products includes sewerage and plumbing systems, as well as fasteners and other additional components (fittings, adapters). All three manufacturers have similar markings: taps for cold water supply are colored green, for climate systems - blue, and for heating and floor heating - white. The products are manufactured in accordance with European standards ISO 50001 and undergo a strict certification system

Czech Ekoplastik and FV-Plast are slightly inferior to their German counterparts. In the post-Soviet space, these manufacturers have no analogues. Plumbing and sewerage pipelines are exported to almost all European countries. Manufacturers give a 15-year guarantee for each pipe. The material for the manufacture is a copolymer known for its hygienic and strength properties.

Turkish Pilsa, Kalde, FIRAT, TEBO, SPK and others have gained popularity due to their affordable price. Unlike Germans and Czechs, manufacturers from Turkey do not give guarantees for their products for 10 years or more, but they provide triple quality control. First, the raw materials are checked, then the finished product is tested for internal loads, and, finally, for external ones.

Pilsa Fiberglass pipe

The rating of manufacturers of polymer pipes is closed by Russian, Belarusian, Ukrainian and Chinese firms. For example, RosTurPlast manufactures bends with EAN 13 certification, products are regularly checked for quality and durability. Plants Rozma, Teploplast, Alfa Plast, Karal Plast (Kazakhstan) and others, produce ready-made plastic systems, fittings, adapters between metal and polypropylene pipes and other additional elements.

Which company to choose polypropylene pipes?

All manufacturers of polypropylene pipes guarantee the high quality of their products and their durability. Therefore, in order to determine the choice of a plastic water supply or sewerage system, we suggest comparing finished pipes from different companies according to the following parameters:

  • Main characteristics. Available diameters, non-standard connections, weight;
  • Appearance. It is no secret that Czech systems are much more beautiful than polypropylene elbows offered by Turkey. In addition, for many owners, this factor is decisive;
  • Durability, strength;
  • Manufacturer's warranty.

Faser pipes

Direct production of this Czech production FV Plast is divided into FV PPR and FV THERM.

  • FV PPR - used for distribution of cold and hot water. Designed for prolonged contact with liquid at room temperature and intermittent contact with hot. They tolerate temperature extremes normally. Produced by welding. Additionally, Faser also manufactures accessories, fittings and other necessary items for these bends;
  • FV THERM - suitable for heating systems, connection to radiators or underfloor heating systems. They can also be used to supply hot water, but this is impractical - too high a cost. To ensure durability and low stretch ratio, they are made with a combination of polypropylene, rigid polyurethane and expanded polystyrene.

The average weight of one running meter of Faser is 0.1 kg. Externally, products for cold water supply are marked with stripes on the white walls, and for heating - with stripes on red taps.

Faser pipe with fiberglass

A wide range allows you to buy polypropylene pipes of any diameters: standard (20, 25, 32 and others) and non-standard.

Which polypropylene pipes are better: 6 little things that can determine the fate of the future pipeline

  • Complete absence of corrosive processes... Under the condition of constant contact with water, a quite significant quality;
  • Absolutely smooth walls, thanks to which the pressure retains its intensity for as long as possible. In addition, there is no effect of the formation of build-ups, which makes metal analogs unusable;

  • Almost complete no noise emitting the transported liquid;
  • Relatively low price... This is one of the most important advantages due to which most owners choose plastic pipes;
  • Simple instruction installation work. With the help of a pipe soldering iron, reliable connections are easily and quickly created, since the melting point of the material in question is only 260 degrees Celsius above zero;

  • No risk of ruptures as a result of freezing of the transported liquid, which is very important for external highways during winter periods;
  • A huge number of all kinds of connecting fittings that allow you to lay construction pipelines of any complexity;

  • Single layer polypropylene pipes are cheaper and are used to create most types of piping systems, but are not suitable for operation at high temperatures, since they begin to deform when heated to 70-90 degrees Celsius;

Trifle number 2: marking on single-layer pipes, which determines their more accurate composition

On all plastic pipes that have one layer, you can find certain designations by which you can judge their more detailed composition and recommended field of application:

Marking Name Peculiarities Areas of use
RRN Homopolymer
  • High hardness;
  • Lack of resistance to low temperatures
  • Ventilation systems;
  • Industrial pipelines
RRV Block copolymer
  • Flexibility;
  • Frost resistance
  • Cold water supply systems;
  • Underfloor heating systems;
  • Manufacturing of impact resistant fittings and pipes
PPR Statistical copolymer
  • High strength;
  • Ability to withstand a short-term temperature jump up to +110 degrees Celsius;
  • Form recovery after defrosting;
  • High resistance to acids and alkalis;
  • Excellent sound insulation
  • Cold and hot water supply systems;
  • Underfloor heating systems;
  • Heating systems in private houses;
  • Compressed air systems

I recommend purchasing single-layer pipes with PPR marking for home use, since they have the best performance characteristics, and their cost is not much higher than their less practical counterparts.

    • Perforated layer... This means that the foil has holes, and in the process of filling the blank with polypropylene, it seeps through them, creating a reliable connection without the use of glue;

    • Solid layer... In this case, there are three separate layers glued together;

  1. Glass fiber reinforced pipe... In this case, the reinforcement is performed by adding fiberglass filler to the polypropylene. This approach has clear advantages:
    • No need to clean the pipe edge before it;
    • Increasing the stiffness factor of the product;
    • Reduction of the thermal expansion rate by 75%;
    • Monolithic structure... There is no division into layers in this case.

  • PN 10... Suitable for transportation cold water, the temperature of which does not exceed +20 degrees Celsius. Allowable pressure - up to 1 MPa;

  • PN 16... It is already possible to use products here, both in cold and hot water supply, so they are able to withstand heating up to +60 degrees Celsius and pressure up to 1.6 MPa;

  • PN 20... There is no problem with transportation of hot liquid, the temperature of which even reaches +95 degrees Celsius. The working pressure is 2 MPa;

  • PN 25... These are already reinforced samples used in heating systems... Withstand temperature jumps exceeding +95 degrees Celsius, and working pressure up to 2 MPa.

  1. White:
    • Ability to withstand a pressure of 25 bar;
    • Cheapness;
    • Complete absence of corrosive processes;

  1. Grey:
    • Heat resistance;
    • Long operational period;
    • Ecological cleanliness;
    • Excellent tightness;

  1. Black:
    • UV resistance;
    • High resistance to aggressive acids and alkalis;
    • Resistant to drying effect;
    • Increased strength parameters;

  1. Green... Cheap samples with a low threshold of working pressure, used, as a rule, for the implementation of a garden watering system.

The country Company name

In modern private construction, engineering networks made of metal are rarely found. But pipelines from various plastics appeared, for example, heating from polypropylene pipes (PP-R) or plumbing from metal-plastic (PEX-AL-PEX) or polyethylene (PERT). Most often, PP-R heating systems are installed, for which there are many reasons, which will be discussed below.

When choosing, the affordable cost of the material plays a significant role, which varies depending on the type of pipes and their purpose, so at first it does not hurt to figure out how to choose polypropylene pipes for heating your home.

Types of polypropylene pipes

In recent years, the range of PP-R products has significantly expanded due to the introduction of new materials in the design that increase the strength and resistance of plastic products to high temperatures and pressures. Polypropylene pipes offered on the modern market are solid polymer and reinforced. Since in our case we are talking exclusively about the heating system of a private house, we will consider in more detail the reinforced products, whose characteristics allow them to be used for this purpose. All-polymer pipes are suitable only for water supply, they cannot be taken for heating.

Reinforced products are distinguished by the fact that another material is introduced into the middle of the plastic wall, which improves the mechanical properties of the plastic. In order to choose the right polypropylene pipes, let's figure out what types of them exist according to the material of the inner reinforcing layer:

  • fiberglass;
  • aluminium foil;
  • basalt fiber.

A layer of fiberglass or basalt is fused with plastic during the manufacturing process, while aluminum foil is fixed with a special adhesive. The perforation provides a bond between the inner and outer plastic layers. Information about the type of reinforcement, diameter and working pressure is always reflected in the marking of polypropylene pipes.

The reinforcing layer prevents thermal elongation of the pipe due to its heating by the coolant. Best of all, aluminum foil and basalt fiber cope with this task, reducing the elongation coefficient of the pipe by three times, but their price is higher than that of products with fiberglass. As practice shows, the latter lengthen a little more when heated.

From the foregoing, a simple conclusion can be drawn: all three types of PP-R pipes are designed to work in heating systems, but the most reliable products are products with an aluminum insert (STABI marking). The further choice depends on your budget. Now that we know which polypropylene pipes are better to choose for installing a heating system, we will analyze their pros and cons.

Advantages and disadvantages

PP-R pipes have firmly taken the leading position in the use of domestic utilities that provide space heating and water supply. The main advantages of polypropylene in heating are the low total cost of materials and installation work compared to other types of pipes. Not only is the cost of 1 m of steel or metal-plastic products higher than PP-R pipes, but their connection is also more difficult.

The most common question that homeowners have is which pipes are better: polypropylene or metal-plastic pipes? There is no unambiguous answer, because if we compare the pipelines themselves, then metal-plastic ones will definitely win. They are reliable in operation, easy to bend by hand and can withstand external mechanical stress.

Note. The reliability of PP-R pipes is constantly improving, as evidenced by their technical characteristics. Many manufacturers already produce products with a maximum working pressure of up to 25 Bar, such a pipe is marked with PN25.

If we compare the heating system of a private house as a whole, where there are many different fittings and fittings, then the primacy is for polypropylene. The fact is that fittings for metal-plastic pipes are made of brass, often of dubious quality. They inherit all the shortcomings of metal pipelines and are a weak point of the system, therefore it is strictly not recommended to brick such pipes and fittings for heating into walls. At the same time, in PP-R systems, all parts are made of the same material - polypropylene, and there are no contraindications for laying them in the grooves, you just need to solder the joints with high quality.

The list of other advantages of PP-R pipes is quite impressive:

  • corrosion resistance;
  • Smooth plastic surface results in low frictional pressure losses and low system resistance;
  • relatively simple installation and, as a consequence, the speed of assembly of the circuit.

Along with the numerous advantages, there are also significant disadvantages of polypropylene pipes. One of them is a significant elongation from heating; we discussed the solution to this problem with the help of reinforcement above.

The second drawback is poor resistance to high temperatures and flammability. If the size of the pipe increases significantly due to the action of the heat carrier 90 ºС, then at the ignition temperature the material simply "floats", and in the event of a fire it burns. This limits its scope of application to residential and office buildings; polypropylene is rarely used at enterprises.

When choosing PP-R pipes, it should be remembered that they are not particularly flexible and cannot be bent during installation. All turns will have to be performed using the appropriate fittings - bends or tees. In addition, over the years, the fragility of plastic increases, so sharp blows to pipelines and other mechanical influences must be avoided.

Polypropylene pipe manufacturers

If we talk about the quality rating of polypropylene pipes, then here the leading positions are occupied by European brands, for example, the German company AQUATERMGMBX, the Czech WAVIN EKOPLASTIK and others well known in the post-Soviet space. The German brand is constantly working on improving its products, as a result of which the wall thickness is reduced while the technical characteristics remain unchanged. This is achieved by using high pressure in the production of plastics, due to which the outer dimensions and weight of the pipes become smaller. It is clear that the cost of such systems is the highest.

Czech polypropylene pipes of the very popular EKOPLASTIK brand are not lagging behind, it is he who takes the lead in using a reinforcing layer of basalt fiber, which is able to compete with perforated aluminum. Such products are labeled EKOPLASTIK FiberBasaltPlus, and their cost is lower than that of German pipes.

A wide range of products for heating systems is offered by various Turkish manufacturers of polypropylene pipes. It should be noted that the quality of the products is average, although Turkish factories - manufacturers are striving to improve their products. For example, Tebo Technics pipes with aluminum foil have a service life of up to 50 years, and the maximum working pressure is declared by the manufacturer at 25 bar. All the details, especially the fittings, are well made and do not cause any serious complaints.

Another Turkish brand that produces PP-R pipes, Kalde Klima, is no less famous in Russia and other CIS countries. The manufacturer offers products reinforced with fiberglass and aluminum, with a working pressure of 10 to 25 bar. The size range is also wide enough - from 20 to 110 mm.

Due to the satisfactory quality and acceptable cost of polypropylene pipes, Turkish manufacturers have gained wide popularity and have become sales leaders for a long time.

Conclusion

The advantages of PP-R pipes significantly outweigh the disadvantages, which determines their choice. If earlier the question arose - is it possible to use polypropylene pipes for heating, now they are increasingly used in private houses and are winning the sympathy of many homeowners.
