Is there not enough space in the nursery for separate cots? Build your own children's wooden bunk bed. We have prepared design options for you, accompanied them with diagrams and drawings, we will show the algorithm for making such a bed with our own hands, illustrating with photo and video materials.

A bunk bed for children or adolescents can also be made of metal, but not everyone will get a neat welded structure, and the appearance of such sleeping places is not too childish. Therefore, we will consider making beds from wood and lumber, since these are inexpensive and easy-to-use materials, warm, beautiful and homely cozy.

Bed frame materials

The list of wood materials from which a bed can be made is quite long. Let's highlight the most common ones.

1. Array. Expensive material and rather difficult to prepare and manufacture if you have no experience with it. Experience is important here. Although solid wood products are the most beautiful and durable, they still do not use a baby bed for a very long time - children grow up and begin to need other sleeping places.

2. Lumber - edged or planed board, timber - the most common and easy-to-use materials, provided that you are sure of proper drying, otherwise the supporting structure may "lead".

3. MDF - fiberboard. The formaldehyde emission of the material is at the same level as that of ordinary wood. When drilling, it is dusty without forming shavings. Laminated MDF looks very attractive. An uncoated slab requires additional finishing, such as varnishing. You can order individual elements of the bed in a furniture workshop or a sawing workshop: everything will be neatly cut there, the edges will be glued.

4. Chipboard - particle board. Formaldehyde emission is increased without a sealed coating, except for the E1 class board. It is easy to saw, but does not hold the screws well. Suitable for non-stressed parts such as under-bed drawers. Backrests can be made of laminated chipboard (chipboard), decorative panels - the film coating does not allow formaldehyde to evaporate, but it is important that the ends of the plates are covered with a film.

5. Furniture board - a board glued from individual pieces of natural wood. It is beautiful, durable, even allows threading, but it requires skill in work, since it has internal stresses that must be taken into account.

When buying accessories, you should give preference to steel hardware. Aluminum is much less durable and tough.

Ways to connect wooden knots

When making a bed, you may need various horizontal and vertical connections, and the formation of corners. This can be done in a variety of ways. We present some of them for reference.

1 - half-tree connection; 2 - connection "in the paw"

1 - complete felling; 2 - the felling is not complete; 3 - steel corner

1 - connection on rectangular keys; 2 - dovetail key connection; 3 - connection in a root spine

Design options (drawings and decor)

Bunk beds can be different constructively and be differently decorated. So, the upper tier can be located exactly above the lower one, be located with an offset, leaving room for the cabinet, or be perpendicular to it. The ladder can be composed of drawers. Another option is steps, which are hinged drawer lids. The bed frame can also be supplemented with drawers located under the lower mattress. To do this, you will need guides - runners. Sometimes something else is added to the bed: a table, shelves, a pencil case or accessories for sports.

Below are drawings of some of the beds with basic dimensions.

Now, here are some design ideas that might inspire an original bunk bed. Pay attention to how absolutely "waste" materials are used in some models - slabs, branches, trunks, driftwood.

Method for making a bunk bed

Some of the most inexpensive materials are pine boards and beams. It is from them that we will make a bunk bed.

Calculation of materials

When making a bed, it must be borne in mind that not only a child can sit on the lower bed, therefore the distance to the lower part of the upper bed should not be less than 85 cm. The size of sleeping places in the case of purchased mattresses is determined by their width and length. If you make your own mattresses from two layers of foam rubber in a cover made of dense fabric, then the sizes are taken based on personal preferences.

The figure below indicates the individual elements of the bed, and the table gives the purpose, dimensions and number of blanks.

1 - vertical racks (legs); 2 - external pads on the racks; 3 - boards of the supporting frame; 4 - upper and lower headboard strips; 5 - headboard center bar; 6 - side barriers; 7 - stair railings; 8 - stairs

Qty Size, mm Name
4 38x76x1730 Vertical racks
4 38x76x1730 Blanks for external overlays on vertical posts
4 38x140x2030 Boards of the supporting frame of the bed
4 32x44x1850 Longitudinal mattress support slats (not shown in the figure)
24 20x76x1000 Mattress support crossbars (not shown), cut in place
8 20x140x914 Upper and lower headboard / footboards

1 20x90x1510 Stair railing
3 20x64x482 Stair steps
2 20x90x1800 Railing railing, cut to size during installation

Assembly units

A bed is a piece of furniture that consists of several assembly units, which are then assembled into a single whole. Identical parts can be cut by fastening them with a vice or a clamp, so they will turn out to be absolutely identical. Before assembling, make sure that all wooden parts are clean, smooth and free from burrs. It is better to work with a special sander for wood or a grinder.

1. Headboard and footboard

These are two almost mirror-like elements. The difference lies in the incorporation of the railing into the foot, as shown in the pictures below.

Headboard and footboard

Detailed layout with the dimensions of the headboard and footboard

Installation procedure: 1 - dowel 8 mm; 2 - the rack and backrests are drilled simultaneously; 3 - this part is attached after assembling all the other parts of the headboard

2. Elements of the supporting frame

To assemble two supporting frames, you will need four prepared boards - the longitudinal components of the frame. For structural reliability, the longitudinal bar must be glued to the board and additionally screwed with screws to the middle of the board thickness. Between the bars glued to the longitudinal strip of the mattress support, transverse slats will be laid - the base for the mattress.

Construction and dimensions of the supporting frame board

3. Details of stairs and railings

The railing of the fence is just a processed board, the railing of the stairs is a board with a sample for mounting on the frame. The fastening points of the steps must be marked in advance, and make sure that the screws for fixing them do not fall on the screws of the frame.

1 - notches 38 mm; 2 - places of fastening of steps; 3 - ladder steps, 3 pcs.; 4 - fence

4. Assembling the frame

The footboard and headboard are connected at the bottom to the planks of the supporting frame using screws. After that, the transverse slats, mattress holders are laid, and the outermost of them are sawn off in the corners for tight installation. You do not need to fix them. The assembly of the second tier is carried out in the same way.

5. Assembling stairs and railings

The ladder and the railing are simply fixed to the frame with screws. If desired, the fence can be made from the side of the wall - for the lower and upper bed. Then you need four more planks.

Now the wood can be painted and varnished, the mattresses can be laid - and the bed is ready!

In conclusion, we suggest watching a video about making a bunk crib for real princesses.

Video. Part one

Video. Part two

As time goes on, children grow up, cribs become cramped for them. The time comes to think about sleeping places with full dimensions, because the children will very soon turn into lanky teenagers. Putting two large beds is not an option, they will take up almost the entire space of the child's room. However, there is always a way out. For those who know how to hold a hammer and a screwdriver in their hands, we offer detailed instructions on how to make a bunk bed yourself.

General view of a bunk bed

Preparatory stage

First, we select mattresses of the required dimensions. Their standard sizes are 180x70 cm. The mattress should be comfortable, best of all orthopedic, spring. But if you wish, you can make it yourself. You will need foam rubber and thick fabric for the cover (teak, coarse calico). It is better to take two layers of foam rubber, the first 10 cm thick, the second 15 cm. The density coefficient of the lower layer should not exceed 35 kg / m3 for the mattress to be softer.

We will make a bunk bed with our own hands simple and comfortable. The product will consist of the following parts:

  • Four racks,
  • Two shelves with edging and railings,
  • Vertical staircase.

Now you need to decide where to put the bed. However, keep in mind that the width of the bed will be 5 cm wider when adding a ladder. So, the estimated dimensions of the finished product will be:

  • Length - 1904 mm,
  • Width - 744 mm,
  • The total height of the bed is 1800 mm,
  • Height to the bottom tier - 200 mm,
  • Height from floor to second tier - 1220 mm. Before making a bunk bed, check in practice if you can get up without hitting the second tier with your head.

We carry out a drawing with full detailing and indication of dimensions. Now you can go to the construction base for lumber.

Tools and materials

To make a bunk bed with our own hands, we need lightweight and durable softwood. The boards and beams must be flat and well dried. If it is possible to cut the material at home, then it is better to do so. Otherwise, wood cutting can be ordered at the base. Here are the dimensions of the required parts:

Material Dimensions, mm Qty

To work, we need the following tools:

  • A hacksaw, simple or electric.
  • Drill with bits.
  • Electric planer.
  • Clamps.
  • Chisel, screwdriver.
  • Hammer.
  • Electric jigsaw.
  • Level, tape measure, ruler, pencil.
  • Lots of sandpaper.

Preparation of parts

Racks

The bedpost consists of two planks held together by four screws at right angles. To do this, we tighten both boards with a clamp. We drill the marked holes with a drill, screw in the screws, remove the clamp. In the same way, we prepare three more racks, and those that go to the headboard should be longer. When considering how to make the most modern bunk bed, we round off the top of the racks. To do this, we cut them along the radius with a jigsaw, remove the chamfer from the corners of the radius, grind the surface with sandpaper.

Bed shelves

Saw them out of 8mm plywood. To make the material less deformed, we make two blanks for each berth. One sheet should measure 124x70 cm, the other 62x70 cm, so that their joint falls on the transverse beam.

Stairs

For the rungs, you can take 3 ready-made gymnastic sticks and cut each into 2 pieces of 50 cm each. The ladder racks are made of 70x40 mm timber. The tops of the racks are rounded in the same way as the bed racks.

Beam for installing shelves

We cut the timber for the installation of the lower shelf:

  • Longitudinal parts 1860x50x40 mm - 6 pcs. (3 for each shelf),
  • Transverse parts 700x50x40 mm - 8 pcs. (4 beams per shelf).

We saw the boards for the edging and the railing in fact, when the base of the bed is assembled. In the manufacture of bunk beds, it is not always possible to follow the exact dimensions, so it is better to adjust the decorative details to the finished frame.

Assembling the bed

Step 1. Assembling the frame of the bed shelves. To do this, we select nests in the bar, about half the thickness of the tree, to connect the longitudinal and transverse bars. We assemble the frame and check its perpendicularity. We attach plywood panels to the frame, having coated them with carpentry glue. We reinforce the connection with screws with a pitch of 200 mm. Dry the finished shelves, then sand the front surface.

Step 2. Putting the ladder together. We mark the racks and drill the holes for the crossbeams using a feather drill. Hole diameter 30 mm, depth 15 mm. We insert the halves of the gymnastic sticks into the holes and fix them with screws. You can pre-coat the walls of the grooves with wood glue.

Stairs

Step 3. Connecting the bed racks to the shelves. How to make a bunk bed with sturdy sun loungers? Safety comes first. Our solution is simple and reliable. First, we mark the height of the attachment of both shelves. This is done from the inside of the racks at the level of the lower surfaces of the shelf frame. We tighten the shelves with racks with clamps, check the perpendicularity and make marks for the fasteners. We drill holes for screws in both boards of the rack. We fix the shelves by tightening the screws.

Fastening shelves with racks

Step 4. Hanging decorative edging. We measure the distance between the posts, saw off and adjust the longitudinal and transverse edging boards. We install them 5 cm below the frames to hide the bar structure. We fasten the edging to the shelves with screws.

Fastening the edging to the shelves

Step 5. Installation of the ladder. The left ladder post is attached to the bed post with three screws. The right pillar is screwed to the upper edging with two screws, and one to the lower edging. The screws are screwed in from the inside of the bed.

Attaching the ladder and edging

Step 6. Installation of the fence. A do-it-yourself bunk bed should be not only durable, but also aesthetic. Therefore, we will make a beautiful fence. We cut longitudinal and transverse boards with dimensions of 70x22 mm into the bed racks, having previously selected the nests in the wood with a chisel. A railing is not required on the bottom shelf of the front side of the bed. We fix the rails with screws, screwing them to the racks. Sew up the openings between the edging and the fence with a beautiful fabric. The assembled product can be painted or varnished.

Step 7. Setting up the bed. To keep the bed stable, it must be attached to the wall with brackets.

Installing the bed

After finishing the work, we will free up a lot of space in our living space. Made to strict dimensions, this neatly assembled bunk bed will become a real decoration of your bedroom.

Of course, a bed is a place to sleep and rest, many will say and will be wrong. After all, modern models differ from their predecessors by the presence of additional functions, such as a dressing room, a work area, a play area and physical education.

Today, a bunk bed not only saves space in a small room in a children's room, but also enables children to spend time interestingly and usefully. And the variety of models allows you to equip any room in shape and size without cluttering it.

If you set yourself the goal of finding a bunk bed for children, then you can spend a very long time doing this, because each manufacturer seeks to make their models as comfortable as possible, interesting in design and functions.

We would like to present you some of the most interesting models to help you make your choice.

"Practical minimalism" ... In addition to two berths, the simplest models usually have drawers for storing things and toys. The side ladder is often designed as a mini-chest of drawers.

"Sports facility" ... Waking up in the morning will be more pleasant if you have a cheerful descent from the second tier along a side slide.

Such models are often complemented by a ladder in the form of a wall bar and sports equipment: a rope, swings, gymnastic rings, which is very important for the development of flexibility and dexterity, both for boys and girls.

"High bed" . For older children, a bunk bed with a pull-out lower tier can be purchased in a small room, no matter what clutter it with furniture. In terms of area, such a model takes the place of one bed. At night, these are two full beds with comfortable mattresses.

"Fairytale house" ... And this children's bunk bed - a real castle for two princesses - is a very interesting design solution. Here you can not only spend time while sleeping, but also play role-playing games. The bed not only fulfills its main function, but also decorates the interior of the children's room.

"Small, small, less" ... What if there are more than two children, and they have one room? Arrange sleeping places along one of the walls in two tiers with a staircase in the middle. The lower seats look like small rooms, giving the child the opportunity to retire and feel like they are in their personal space. And if you hang curtains on the second tier, then the upper seats will become isolated.

This model can be safely called three-tiered. An excellent solution that combines three berths, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers.

This building is also designed for three children. The lower part is a double bed, and the upper tier is a single bed. In a complex with a wall in the form of a rack, a bunk bed forms a cozy isolated corner.

"Furniture transformer" ... Bunk bed-transformer with a table. At night, the tabletop slides into place, making room for the bed, while in the daytime it is vice versa. With such furniture, there is enough space in the room to place a sports corner or play area.

For many, transformable furniture is a real find when you don't want to turn a children's room into a bedroom, when its main purpose is to play, study, and meet peers. It is not very comfortable to sit on the beds in the daytime, it is much more pleasant to “hang out” on the sofa. In solving this problem, transformable furniture helps. It is a sofa during the day and two beds in the evening.

The beds can also be transformed into a pencil case, which will save usable space during the day.

"Tree house" ... L-shaped beds in two tiers significantly save space in the room for free movement and games, and drawers will accommodate many things. In the upper part, you can store seasonal items, winter in summer and summer in winter. It is not very convenient to use them every day, but there is an opportunity to save space in the closet.

A similar solution for little "Mowgli" from loving parents.

"Pirates' ship" ... This model is intended for one child. The second tier is presented as a play area. However, if you wish, you can arrange a bed there for the second child.

"Hold on tight to the wheel, chauffeur" ... Interesting models of beds for boys in the form of a car or a bus. It helps to develop imagination, to have fun playing.

We save space ... Bunk bed models do not have to accommodate two children. Such complexes save space, for this reason, the sleeping place is often located on the "second" floor, and in the lower tier there is a work or play area, or a wardrobe with shelving.

This model is called "loft bed" and requires a sufficiently high ceiling in the room.

Model with a berth and a mini dressing room.

Compact corner bunk bed for 2 children with a work area located at the bottom and a high chest of drawers for things.

It is better to choose children's beds made of wood, as this is the most environmentally friendly material. Many models are made in a combination of wood, metal and plastic.

Not all of the presented models can be purchased in the store, many are custom-made according to the idea of designers. You can also make a bunk bed with your own hands, or seek help from specialists. After all, individuality is always preferable in interior design.

The simplest models can be purchased for 11-12 thousand rubles, the cost of beds with additional functions and accessories depends on the number of these functions.

Do it yourself

The manufacture of any product begins with the development of a schematic drawing with an arrangement of dimensions. Sleeping places can be placed one above the other, or you can make a 2-tiered corner bed. The choice depends on the size of the room and its geometry in the plan (rectangular, square).

In order to determine the size of the bed, you need to decide what size mattresses you will buy for your children. The standard size of a children's mattress is 60 / 70x140 cm, for adolescents 80 / 90x190 or 80 / 90x200 cm.To avoid surprises later, it is better to take care of buying mattresses in advance, and already based on their size, develop a scheme for the future product.

The easiest way to make a bed is from timber and edged boards. The frame consists of four uprights, which in the narrow part of the bed are connected by horizontal elements using wooden dowels and wood glue. Then the parts of the headboard and footboard are connected with long side panels using screws. You will need an additional rack for the stairs. The step of the steps should not exceed 250 mm.

You can make a bunk bed from plywood or MDF sheets. Below is a diagram of a bed with a wardrobe and a drawer. The upper berth measuring 800x2000 mm, the lower sliding one: folded 800x1600 mm, unfolded - 800x1870 mm.

The next model is made with an extension ladder, which, if desired, can be made in the form of drawers. Sleeping accommodations of the same size 800x1900mm.

The wooden product must be processed with a grinder or ordinary sandpaper, and then painted with varnish or paint of the desired color. The ends of MDF products must be pasted over with an edge.

If you do not have the necessary equipment for cutting parts from plywood or MDF, use the services of firms that provide such services according to the customer's sketches. Already from the ready-made elements, you can perform self-assembly.

Make your kids' room cozy, personal and imbued with your love and care.

Today, people quite often make furniture with their own hands. If the family has two children, then in order to save space in the children's room, you can make or purchase a children's bunk bed.

A bunk bed for children can be designed as a pirate ship. To do this, you can add elements such as a strong rope, slide and handlebars.

DIY bunk bed: manufacturing technology

If you plan to purchase a high-quality bunk bed for children, then you should know that it is quite expensive. Budget designs are not always of high quality. The two-story structure must be able to support both children and parents. The stability of the product is also important.

In some cases, bunk beds are also made, but builders do not recommend doing this.

Necessary materials

A bunk bed, decorated in the same style as other furniture elements, perfectly complements the interior.

To make your own crib for children, which will have two floors, you need the following tools:

  1. Pliers.
  2. Hammer.
  3. Screwdriver.
  4. Electric drill or screwdriver.
  5. Building level.
  6. Roulette.
  7. Square.
  8. Hacksaw.
  9. Clamps.
  10. Electric jigsaw.

In order for the bed to fit perfectly into the interior of the children's room, you will need to think in advance about where it is best to place it. You will need to take into account the size of the sleeping places in order to be able to understand how much material you will need to purchase. For work, you will need the following materials:

  1. Wooden beams 2.5 m long - 4 pcs.
  2. Wooden beams 3 m long - 4 pcs.
  3. Three-meter boards - 4 pcs.
  4. 2 plywood sheets, chipboard or slats 12 mm thick.
  5. Screws 75 mm long.
  6. Screws with a diameter of 6 mm, which have a hex head - 8 pcs.
  7. Bolts with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 75 mm - 10 pcs.
  8. Nuts and washers.
  9. Putty, which is intended for working with wood.
  10. Self-tapping screws.
  11. Bolts 150 mm long - 2 pcs.
  12. Polyurethane.
  13. Sanding paper.

Wood can be replaced with laminated chipboard. If, nevertheless, it is planned to use boards, then before performing all the work, they will need to be kept in the room for about 1 week, so that the temperature and humidity are approximately the same as in the room where the structure will be made. This will need to be done so that the material does not warp.

Do-it-yourself crib assembly must be done carefully, because the design will be an important component of the children's room.

Work order

A bunk bed, decorated in a classic style, is in good harmony with the interior.

The manufacturing process is as follows:

  1. First of all, you need to determine on the bed supporting structure the location of the fixing points for wooden boxes that are intended for mattresses.
  2. A hole must be made on both sides of the side rails for each of the screws.
  3. Next, the lower longitudinal bar is pressed against the first wall, after which it is fastened with a screw. Do the same with the second wall.
  4. In the same way, the upper longitudinal beams are installed, which are intended for mattresses. At this stage, the supporting structure of the child's bed will be made.
  5. It is necessary to fix the crossbars under the baby bed. This should be done with both the lower and the upper tier. They must be rigidly fixed with screws to the beams at a distance of 30 cm from each other.
  6. Next, the frame of the box is sheathed with boards in the side. For cladding, it is recommended to use screws with invisible heads.
  7. Further, the side-shields are attached, capable of eliminating the accidental fall of children who will be sleeping.
  8. The stairs to the upper tier are rigidly fixed with screws.

Nuances that need to be considered

Bunk bed layout with built-in table and shelves.

It is imperative to be sure what dimensions should have a place for sleeping and on which side it is best to install a vertical ladder. The size of a child's bed should be approximately 8 cm longer and 10 cm wider than the sleeping space. The ladder will increase the size of the bed by approximately 4.5 cm.

In order to determine the appropriate bed height, the height of the ceiling in the room must be taken into account. The distance between the lower and upper floors should also be taken into account. You will need to leave enough space so that the mother can sit next to the child if necessary.

Ladders and uprights require solid wood beams and planks. The panels at the ends are the same for the entire structure, this moment will simplify their preparation. The side panels are the same width as the end panels. If you connect them differently with each other, then you can make an original design.

If we proceed from the size of the mattresses that will need to be placed on the bed, then it is necessary to increase the size of the structure by 2 cm on each side. This is necessary in order to be able to easily make bed linen. The most important guideline in this work is the convenience of the crib, which is being manufactured.

The lower position of the first tier can be determined if we take as the basis for calculations the height, which is easily overcome by the child. In most cases, the height is 35 cm for a child under 3 years old. The frame for placing the mattress should be lower by its thickness. For the second tier, the upper position must be set so that an adult child who sleeps upstairs can sit down on the first floor at any time without touching the head of the upper floor.

How to make a strong frame?

Bunk bed drawing

A children's bunk bed should be reliable, while the aesthetic side is secondary. The bars must be firmly connected with screws. The result is 2 frames that are almost the same size. Aesthetically, they are able to complement each other well.

You will need to fasten the board with screws to one of the sides and the end, the importance of this fastener should be taken into account. Self-tapping screws are recommended to be screwed in from the inside; you will need to make sure that they do not go through the board. For small self-tapping screws, large holes can be drilled. For this, it is recommended to use a depth stop on an electric drill.

The sidewall is also installed on another frame. It is recommended to hide the holes for fasteners with putty. After it dries, sand the filler with sanding paper. The length of the leg must match the height of the guardrail. Make sure that the leg can withstand the load that will fall on it.

In the leg you will need to make a hole in the place where the upper tier is attached. The same hole is made in the frame with the bead. In the leg, you will need to make grooves that will help you easily hide the hex head of the screw and washer. The hole must be made so deep that the screw, passing through the side and the leg, can be securely fixed in the bar.

A children's bunk bed has one advantage: under the first tier, you can place a small box in which you can store a bed or a small amount of necessary things. For example, a child can place their toys in such a box. The front panel of the drawer should not be as long as that of the crib. The height should correspond to the panel on the ground floor, which can complement the design of the room for the children.

Bed technology

The lower tier of the bed can be equipped for a child's play by equipping the structure with additional elements.

The base of a bunk crib must be made of wood. High-quality preparation of this material requires some effort: you will need to align with a planer, sand with sandpaper, at the end you will need to varnish the product in order to be able to extend its service life.

If the walls are made of plasterboard, then determining the location of the racks is quite simple. It is very important to make holes in the required places. For this purpose, it is advisable to find an assistant who can support the frame at the bottom by pressing it firmly against the wall.

The pilot holes will need to be made by drilling the profile of the posts, plasterboard and frame bar. It is necessary to prepare places for screwing in screws that have hex heads. A long drill should be used for this operation. The screws will need to be screwed in so that they connect all the elements and are fixed in the racks. In the same way, you need to install the first tier, that is, a frame with a side.

Particular attention must be paid to the installation of the fence, because it can create some safety guarantees for the children. The fence can be made of sturdy planks, which are fixed on racks placed in an upright position. In this case, the screws are screwed in from the inside. It should be borne in mind that there must be a hole in the fence for the stairs that lead to the upper tier.

A vertical ladder is made quite simply, it will take up less space when compared to a ladder that is inclined. First of all, two beams are fixed that can guide the movement of children during the ascent or descent. The steps must be securely fixed with bolts that are 6 mm long. Long bolts are used to secure the top step and at the same time fix the ladder to the bed.

Saving living space is acute in small apartments. A good solution is a bunk bed made of wood.

It retains the necessary space, gives the room a cosiness. If you supplement it with drawers, the functionality will increase many times over. A well-made bed will serve the kids until they grow up. After that, it can be kept for grandchildren or sold at a profit. There is always a demand for such furniture.

Constructions

Most choose the classic version of a bed made of wood, when the reclining seats are located one above the other, connected by a staircase.

For kids

The bunk bed can accommodate two children in the same room. Thanks to it, there is enough space for games and activities.

Practical model options:

  • angular - berths are located to each other at an angle equal to 90 degrees;
  • attic type - designed for one child who can sleep upstairs and study at the desk downstairs;
  • retractable tier - the lower bed is pulled out, increasing the area;
  • ladder of boxes- the floors are connected by steps that slide out and serve as drawers for storing small items.

Whichever wood furniture is chosen, it is important to take care of safety. It is best if the bunk bed is against the wall and all sides of the top are securely fenced. If a child under 3 years old sleeps on the lower floor, a fence will also do the trick. Children often roll over in their sleep, so the partitions will protect them from falls. When the baby grows up, the fence from the bottom can be removed.

For adults

The difference between an adult model and a child model is only in size. For children, a length of 160–170 cm is suitable, for older people it is better to make a bed of 190–200 cm. The width depends on the preferences of a particular person and free space. In order not to spend money on an additional order of a mattress according to individual sizes, it is better to choose the standard version - 70–90 cm.

Usually a bunk bed is made of chipboard with your own hands for a country house with limited living space. It allows you to host guests at night. In one-room apartments, such furniture will be an ideal solution if the family has been replenished with a child. He will be able to sleep on the upper tier, and his parents - on the lower. In this case, the first floor should be designed for two.

The attic option from a bar will also save space. Below you can equip a full-fledged workplace, and sleep under the ceiling. If the hostess does not like to be sat on her bed, and the area of the apartment will allow you to place either a sofa or a bed, you can put a bunk model. The upper part will be a bed, and the lower one will be made in the form of a regular sofa.

There is a fairly wide selection of classic models in stores, but they are not always suitable for a particular apartment. If you make a bed out of wood yourself, you can solve several problems at once.

Materials for making

To create a bunk bed, you need to choose the material. You don't have to search for a whole array. Yes, it makes excellent models that last a very long time, but they require special skills. The array should be very good, only durable types of wood are suitable, they are usually expensive.

The following materials are used as a basis:

  • Chipboard or chipboard is used only for some parts of the bed, such as headboards, drawers, panels. You need to choose only safe plates of class E1 or E0.5;
  • edged or planed board... The material must be selected with great care. Damp wood can lead, it will change shape, warp;
  • MDF. It is MDF that is considered the modern analogue of the board. Plates are available in raw and laminated form. The edges of the finished bed are treated with a special tape;
  • furniture board. Pieces of wood are glued together to form a solid board. A person with carpentry skills should work with it.

The process of creating a bed requires tools that are used when working with wood and metal. You will also need measuring instruments, a pencil.

Bed stairs

Making a bunk bed also involves a ladder. In the classic version, the usual three-stage design is sufficient, but this is not necessary. It all depends on the chosen model. There are some where the ladder is replaced by ropes. The option with a slide looks very interesting, but you should not do it if the free area of the apartment does not allow it.

Ladders can be mounted vertically. They are tightly connected to the frame and do not take up space. There are also sloping options, which are easier to climb. The ladder anchorages must be closed.

The classic staircase consists of steps and railings. It is for them that the child will be able to hold on, climbing to the upper tier.

Drawing creation

In order to know how much material, fasteners, accessories will go, you need to decide on the bed model. If a person can create a drawing of a children's bunk bed made of wood with his own hands, then it is enough to sketch it on a piece of paper. It can also be done in a special PC program.

There are a few things to keep in mind. Such a distance must be left between the tiers so that an adult can net onto the lower bed without touching the upper shelf with his head, of course, if the height of the room allows it.

There should be sufficient distance between the second floor and the ceiling for the child to feel calm. Warm air accumulates at the top, so a lack of space can negatively affect healthy, full sleep.

The berth must be designed taking into account standard mattresses. Then they can be ordered at any store.

Without having the skills to create drawings, you can pick up a ready-made scheme.

The principle of assembling a bed from wood

To make a bunk bed, which will become a favorite place for children to play and relax, you need to properly prepare the materials and process the details. Furniture makers in factories have access to a variety of equipment that makes the task much easier, but a good owner also has the right tools.

Preparatory operations:

  • boards need to be smoothed, leveled, adjusted to the required size;
  • parts are best fastened with several methods at once, including glue, self-tapping screws;
  • the side racks must be very strong, since the main load will go to them;
  • if there are roundings on the details, they should first be drawn on a paper template, and then transferred to a tree;
  • cutting is best done with an electric jigsaw;
  • after the manufacture of all parts, they are tried on;
  • dowels, which will hold the structure together, require special care.

After the bed is assembled, it is taken apart in order to finally connect with glue and self-tapping screws. If flaws are identified, they are corrected. You should not rush to assemble, since the bed must be securely fastened and stable.

Step by step manufacturing

For an inexperienced craftsman, it is better to start by creating a classic bunk bed. First, the base is made, while you need to act clearly according to the scheme. A rectangular box is created. To do this, boards are attached to the tsars, the angle should be 90 degrees. Supports in the form of bars are attached to the end parts with self-tapping screws. The crossbeams are placed in the created box, on which the mattress will lie.

You will need three boards to create the backrest. They need to be assembled with the struts of the structure using dowels and grooves. It is better that the connection elements are round, since the holes for them can be made with a drill of the appropriate diameter.

Note! Wood glue should be used only after preliminary fitting, when the dowels have come to all the holes in the racks and boards.

The foot is made in the same way as the back, the only difference is in the number of crossbars. The base of the second floor will rest on the upper parts of the backrest with the headboard, so it is important that they are level.

The upper tier is created following the pattern of the lower one. It is fastened with dowels. The structure should be reinforced with end boards. You can proceed to the installation of the stairs. The easiest option is when crossbars are attached to two posts. It is easier to use plywood for drawers. Special wheels need to be screwed to them, which will guide their movement. The drawers are ideal for storing bedding, toys and other items.

If the material has not been pretreated, the finished bed is coated with paint and varnish. It is better to use aqueous solutions, which are safer for health.

Retractable design

For a children's room, a pull-out bed is considered the safest; it is not high to fall from it. Partitions on two-story structures were not invented for nothing, but sometimes children get up in a dream and this can result in serious injury.

The advantage of a pull-out bed is that in the daytime the lower part is retracted, thereby freeing up space for games. Children will not quarrel over space as the beds are not connected to each other. They are used separately.

You can make such a bed yourself from chipboard. The base is made of a solid 18 mm thick board. The shield is attached to the sidewalls. The lower tier will be pulled out using four wheels.

A pull-out bed is a great space saver, easy to make, but does not allow you to store bedding in drawers.

Loft bed

Many parents are faced with the problem when the child does not want to sleep on their own. They just haven't created a decent loft bed for him yet. The design is so attractive that the child will happily change the parent's bed for the ability to sleep under the ceiling.

The main value of such a two-tier structure is in saving space. The bed is made on high racks, so the place to sleep is at the ceiling. A work area with a table and a chair is located under the lounger. The only thing to take care of is good artificial lighting, as the bed will give shade.

It is better to make a side staircase in the form of steps. In a simple design, these can be ordinary wooden rungs. Having tried, you can make steps in the form of drawers, on which it is convenient to walk, sit, store in them a lot of things you need for study.

The height from the floor to the second tier should be at least 120 cm. Although this depends on the person for whom the workplace is being created.

The loft bed can stand not only on racks, but also be attached to the wall or to the ceiling. The design depends on the selected drawing. If it was created from good wood, it is enough to open it with transparent varnish. A tree drawing always looks great in any room.
