Imitation of decorative brickwork in a modern interior - photo

In modern design, you can often
meet interiors with brickwork indoors. Such an effect
creates coziness and makes the room more "warm". But for such an element
it is completely inappropriate to make a real brick wall where there is none
according to the building plan. It's expensive, reduces room space, and also
creates an additional load on the foundation.

Just for such cases, there are decorative panels with imitation
brickwork. And if the store option for some reason you
does not fit, but there can be a lot of them: price, quality, color scheme,
shape, size, etc., we can offer you a simple
and an inexpensive way to imitate brickwork with your own hands. And most
The great advantage of this method is that it does not require
special skills, for example, work with putty and other
building mixtures.

To imitate brickwork you will need:

  • cardboard packaging boxes (necessarily thick cardboard)
  • PVA glue
  • hot glue gun and sticks
  • thick paper napkins
  • tassel
  • pencil
  • ruler
  • utility knife or scissors
  • paints, varnish

Working process

The surface on which the imitation of brickwork will be made
(it can be a wall or a panel), you need to prepare it first.
Clean the wall of old wallpaper, prime if necessary
with a special construction primer or a solution of PVA glue and water 1 to 2.
If the wall was covered with paint, then wipe the surface from dust
and degrease.

Imitation of decorative brickwork

There are many types of bricks. It all depends on what
more suitable for your interior. And, if with the color of the brick will
the opportunity to experiment, then with the size of the bricks you need
decide right away. The main dimensions of the brick can be seen in the figure.

In addition, the type of masonry depends on which side of the brick will be
visible. Each side has its own name and will be completely different
look in the interior.

1 - bed

There are different options for decorative brickwork: for example, external
the side can be fully laid out with a bed or a spoon, or it can
combine different sides of the brick.

In our example, we will imitate red brick masonry, we will lay it with a spoon with dimensions of 228 × 65.

On a sheet of thick cardboard (packing box) we draw "bricks" of the desired size.

Then we cut the sheets along the marked lines with scissors or a clerical knife and a ruler.

"Masonry" in the interior can be either solid or open to us
some image. For clarity, in this example, we took
photo from the calendar. In the interior, it can be a drawing, photo wallpaper,
stucco, etc.

We mark the borders of the picture. If the boundaries according to the plan should be
go under the decorative brickwork, place the picture on the wall.
We glue, draw, sculpt.

Part of the resulting "bricks" cut in half. This is needed for
so that the masonry goes in a checkerboard pattern and looks realistic.

We begin to glue the "bricks" to the surface. It can be done
glue for heavy wallpaper, such as vinyl. You can use PVA glue or any
others convenient for you to work with. After some experiments
I settled on this method: construction PVA glue + glue
thermal gun. If we consider them separately, then PVA glue for a long time
dries and does not immediately fix the bricks, but the glue thermal gun, if
use without PVA, consumes rods very quickly. Therefore, we do
like this: we apply PVA glue to the entire rectangle, with the exception of the
corners. At the corners, we apply glue from a thermal gun. Hot melt immediately
fixes the "brick" in the right place, and PVA securely fixes it already
during the day.

It is most convenient to start laying from the corner. We fix the first "brick" in the lower left corner.

We will fix the next one at a certain distance, leaving room for an imitation of a 07-10mm seam.

We retreat the same distance from above, starting to lay out the second
row. It will start with a half of the "brick" to get masonry
in a checkerboard pattern.

When all the rectangles are glued, leave them to dry.
for the time indicated in the glue instructions. If it's a building
PVA glue, then the drying time will take about a day.

When the glue dries and the "bricks" will be securely along the entire length
fixed on the wall or panel, proceed to decorating
napkins. This is necessary to give texture to our brick
masonry and hide the corrugation of the packaging cardboard.

Napkins are needed dense, of high quality, so that, when soaked in glue, they do not tear or roll up.

With a brush or sponge, thickly apply PVA glue on top of the rectangles.

We crush the napkin in our hands to form folds.

And we apply it to the wall, in the place where the glue was applied. From above with a brush on a napkin we pass glue again.

We select the gaps between the rectangles with a brush or a finger.

Thus, we glue the entire wall. We make sure that there are folds and well-defined gaps - the seams between the masonry.

Let it dry for another day.

When the glue dries and hardens, we start painting.

The color is chosen according to the design. In this example
we imitate red brick. By mixing white, orange, red
and black paint we achieve similarity with the original color of the brick.

And we cover the "bricks". You can do this with a brush, you can use a sponge, imitating a slightly porous brick structure.

Then we pass with a thin brush the places of the “seams” in the brickwork. Colour
choose the solution according to your taste. But most of the time he has a little
grayish tint.

Remember that the paint after drying becomes lighter than it seems.
in liquid state. If after drying the color does not suit you,
then the wall can be repainted until it acquires the desired
shade.

When everything is ready, the folds on the bricks can be highlighted with a darker or
lighter paint, thereby giving the masonry a little antiquity
and invoices.

We apply the paint of a suitable shade with a dry brush on the “bricks”.

Top paint is best varnished to protect the surface from moisture and dust.

Such walls in the interior look very believable and beautiful.
The work is not difficult, you do not need to be a professional to complete it
builder or finisher, materials are available and everything can be done
according to your taste, choosing colors and shapes for the interior.

Do-it-yourself plaster is the most popular design method, but far from the only one. Let's take a closer look at each one, shall we?

Making a plaster wall

  • Inexpensive way. Such coverage does not require financial investments.
  • Eco-friendly. The plaster does not contain harmful impurities.
  • Simple. It does not require special skills and tools. Just a little care and patience.

markup

Before starting the main work, it is necessary to prepare the surface - remove the old finish. If it is not even, level with plaster and cover with a primer. Another option is the dry leveling method. However, if the area of \u200b\u200bthe room is small, this method is unlikely to work, because the sheets will “eat up” the space.

Please note: if the apartment is in a new building, you can start decorating the room no earlier than 1 year after the delivery of the house. Otherwise, the walls may shrink and cracks form.

After the surface is prepared for work, you can start marking. And there are two options here.

First: in some hardware stores they sell a ready-made mesh form, this method is simpler, but also more expensive. Second: self markup. How to make an imitation of a brick wall with your own hands?

  • The standard brick size is 250 mm x 65 mm, the size of the joints is about 15 mm, although this is not essential, and they can, of course, be changed.
  • Cut a brick out of cardboard with seams on the sides.
  • Mark the center of the brick, also taking into account the seams. You should get a blank as in the photo below.

The markup starts from the left corner. Provide for indents from the ceiling and floor in advance - at least 5 cm. First, you can mark the area according to the grid principle, marking the grid, and then draw half the brick through the row. Circle the resulting stones, and you will have a standard brickwork.

It is convenient to use masking tape 15 mm thick. Glue the jumpers with an overlap, be sure to leave “tails” at the edges so that later the tape can be easily removed.

markup

How to make the imitation of brickwork on the wall as natural as possible? There are two ways to create such a masonry.

Individual elements

The size of the bricks is exactly the same - 250 mm x 60 mm. If you have a sheet of expanded polystyrene (polystyrene) in front of you, then the optimal width of one product is about 12 mm.
The material is easy to cut with an ordinary construction knife with a sharp blade. In this case, each detail will have its own texture.

Sheet

Instead of individual bricks, you can make a decorative sheet that imitates masonry. Since the foam melts easily, a soldering iron is used for this. They are carried out at the seams, controlling the depth of pressing. Be especially careful with the corners - they should be even, without roundings and bevels.

I must say, this method is suitable for those who are already familiar with the material; It's unlikely to be perfect the first time. Need to practice.

When burning, be sure to wear a mask, ventilate the room well! Styrofoam emits harmful fumes when melted.

Laying

They always begin to install bricks from the corner, then they lay door and window openings.

You can attach them directly to the wall using liquid nails, or to a sheet of drywall or plywood. Subsequently, such a sheet can be fixed on self-tapping screws. This method is more convenient, since the sheet lies on the floor, the work is carried out on a horizontal surface.

Painting and decor

Some leave the texture of the foam, while others cover it with putty - to give a special structure to the stone.

In any case, the material must be primed before painting. Carefully choose the paint, it can ruin the polystyrene foam. Suitable paints without solvents, for example, water-based. The result can be fixed with matte acrylic varnish.

Read more about creating foam bricks in the video below.

We make an imitation of tiles

Today in the hardware store you can find several options for tiles. This is not only a standard ceramic, but also a modern soft - elastic clinker based on polyacrylic.

Working with elastic clinker

  • Very flexible material, lays down on any surface, goes around even sharp corners.
  • Easy to cut with long scissors, can be given any shape.
  • UV and cold resistant, non-fading, breathable.
  • Suitable for both interior decoration and facades of houses.

Surface preparation in this case is the same: and primed. The difference is in the materials used. Most often, clinker is planted on tile adhesive, but the seller may advise you to purchase a special one from the manufacturer. Such a composition will make the tile more stable and solid.

  1. First, the rows are marked with a simple pencil and a ruler.
  2. The adhesive is applied with a notched trowel, a layer of 2-3 mm is sufficient. No need to completely cover the entire area! Fill in small areas so that the adhesive does not have time to dry.
  3. Apply the tile carefully, without strong pressure. Making half a brick is easy, just cut it with scissors.
  4. After the main stage is completed, the glue on the seams is leveled with a thin brush slightly moistened with water.
  5. Elastic clinker does not require the use of grout. This is an undoubted advantage of the material.

Features of hard materials

  • Gypsum hard tiles are cheaper than analogues. However, its main disadvantage is that it is not at all resistant to moisture, so it cannot be laid in rooms with an aggressive environment, for example, in a bathroom, in a kitchen. However, there are also products with a protective coating.
  • Another view - from. Inexpensive yet durable, it is often used to create both indoor and outdoor decor. Interestingly, you can even make it yourself. The solution is simply poured into a special form.
  • Finally, the third type is clinker tiles. She has the highest performance characteristics, but the price is appropriate. It is rarely purchased for interior decoration.

Mounting

The principle of working with rigid material is similar to working with elastic. The main difference is that solid bricks will have to be cut, and one cannot do without the appropriate tools. You will need a circular saw or grinder with a disc.

In addition, after laying, it is necessary to wipe the seams with a special compound. This must be done very carefully so as not to get on the stones, because it is difficult to wipe it off.

In general, if you have experience in laying tiles, there will be no problems.

The more light hits a brick wall, the more natural and natural it should look. An illuminated decorative brick wall attracts attention, and if done carelessly or poorly, it reduces the cost of the interior.

Choose a color based on the overall gamut of the room. Standard terracotta is suitable for warm interiors, cold gray - for more brutal ones. By the way, it is better to add a little ocher to neutral white, so it will not seem flat and lifeless.

  • Material prepared: Anastasia Khripunkova

Today, the use of brick or its imitation in design is very popular. It is used in various rooms and styles: loft, industrial, Scandinavian. Many people like the idea of giving wall coverings an imitation of real brick, and there is nothing complicated in its implementation.

Finishing methods

There are two ways to do this finish. The first is gypsum tile cladding, which fakes brick and is applied over wet plaster. The second way is to imitate brickwork when creating a relief surface. This semblance of masonry will bring originality and freshness to the interior.

The surface of the walls, finished in brick, unites the strict lines of the rows and highlights the special decor of the texture of each square. The natural surface of a brick is rough and uneven, so many people use its imitation. This method of decoration is preferred to natural brickwork, and it belongs to the loft architectural style.

Peculiarities

When choosing a material for this finish, the following criteria are taken into account: aesthetics, pricing and harmlessness.

In this case, brick imitation plaster is the most suitable option, which has a number of advantages:

  • The purchase of this material does without large financial investments.
  • Wall cladding takes relatively little time.
  • Such a coating is applied in a thin layer, and you do not have to worry about narrowing the room.

  • It is easy to apply such a coating with your own hands, without involving specialists and avoiding additional expenses.
  • Brick plaster can decorate not only the surface of the wall, but also an apron in the kitchen, corners or doorways.
  • Such plaster imitates the finishing of expensive clinker tiles.

How to choose plaster

Before starting work, it is necessary to purchase all the necessary materials in advance. In terms of imitation of brickwork, gypsum plaster is most acceptable, while When buying, you should pay attention to the following characteristics of the material:

  • It should be easy to apply and have elasticity.
  • It is important that there is no shrinkage property after hardening.
  • Before application, there should be no preliminary and additional puttying of surfaces.
  • The material must be environmentally friendly and harmless.

But still, preference should be given to ready-made mixtures, they have greater elasticity and ease of use. This material, diluted to the desired consistency, is sold in a ready-to-use form. Such a mixture is a homogeneous mass that can be applied immediately. The advantage of such plaster is also that the container with the remaining mixture is tightly closed, and it can be used even after a long time.

Dry mixes can be varied and heterogeneous. They include various components, for example, an additive in the form of large stone chips. To do this, the manufacturer indicates on the packaging for which surface this composition is suitable.

For the primer of the working surface, a lot of different compositions are also produced in liquid and pasty form. But before this type of work, it is better to treat the wall with a deep penetration liquid composition.

Application process

Before you start creating a simulated brick surface, you need to find out if the walls are suitable for such work. They must have a flat surface and not a "littered" state, a suitable wall relative to the floor has an angle of 90 degrees. It is important that there are no large pits, bumps and failures. If there are any, using cement mortar, beacons and plaster mesh, leveling should be done.

You can evaluate the state of a surface by applying a long rule to it. If gaps of more than 3 cm per meter of length appear between the rule and the wall surface, proceed with leveling.

If there are small defects (cracks, small irregularities) on a straight wall, there is no need to plaster it, just close the imperfections with cement or putty. After complete drying, it is necessary to treat the surface with a deep penetration primer, having previously mixed glue into it. Priming is required, otherwise the decorative layer of plaster will begin to flake off and fall off over time.

Plaster mortar must be applied before work, prepare an auxiliary tool so that it is always at hand if necessary: a skein of adhesive tape, a wide and narrow spatula, a rule or a laser level and a lace for displaying beacons. It is very convenient to direct the mixture with a drill, on which the mixer is attached - a special nozzle for thorough mixing. In order not to spoil the flooring, lay an oilcloth.

After fulfilling all the necessary conditions, you can start laying the plaster mixture. The simplest and most applicable method involves the addition of color to the induced solution. You just need to dilute the dry solution, as indicated in the instructions for use, add the coloring element there and mix everything thoroughly using a mixer.

If you have never encountered such work, in this case, you should not direct too much solution. After some time, you need to try to work it out, otherwise it will seize and become unusable for application. It is necessary to direct the solution to a certain viscosity until it acquires the consistency of thick sour cream and begins to slide off the spatula evenly, without falling in pieces.

The induced solution is taken on a spatula and thrown onto the surface, while smoothing upwards. If you want the surface to imitate brick, do not try to level the applied mortar too smoothly. The brick does not have a smooth surface, it is usually uneven and rough.

When decorating a brick, it is necessary to take into account the width of the seam; if this condition is not observed, the appearance of the finished surface will be unnatural. In this case, the dimensions of the most common brick are not very important, since this material is made both elongated and square.

Currently, textured and embossed non-standard bricks are produced. And this type of plaster can imitate. Starting to perform such work, it is preferable to have some experience gained when finishing by imitation of ordinary standard bricks.

When applying seams between falsified bricks, use a ruler, or better, a rule. Then the line will be perfectly flat. If you want a curved line, you can draw it by hand. The seam must be done before the solution hardens on the surface. When carrying out the strips, excess will appear, which are well cleaned with a dry cloth.

Thus, each applied pattern is “drawn” in turn. A prerequisite is that the coating must be wet, the decor must be applied even before the mortar sets or hardens. After this process, the surfaces are allowed to harden and should not be touched during drying. To obtain the original texture of the bricks, you can draw on the decor with a dry and hard brush.

After the wallcovering has dried and gained strength, use sandpaper and sand the decor, but this depends on your preference. The last point is the removal of all unnecessary plaster elements that spoil the pattern. The subsequent processing of the resulting decorative surface will depend on the type of solution used and the presence of coloring elements in it, which are not always added.

Colour

It does not make sense to leave a plaster imitating brick in a natural light gray tone. That's why they paint it. In this process, there are many design options and complete freedom of choice, it all depends on your taste. Natural brick has different shades, so you can mix several options for color pigments, achieving the best visual similarity.

You can first apply a layer of paint of one color, and after a few minutes create a different color or give individual bricks a brighter look. In natural brickwork there is a variety of shades, therefore, a decorative coating that imitates brick can have many tones.

You can experiment with colors without fear of spoiling it., bricks are currently produced in a variety of colors - from bright to dark. And few people will be able to guess that the “masonry” is fake. Spoil the look of the interior can only be a discrepancy between the imitation of masonry in color with furniture or flooring. Therefore, when covering, select matching tones.

Also, a decorative coating that imitates brick is made by hand using adhesive tape. For this process, construction tape is required in width equal to the seam during masonry. Then, on the wall covering, which will be finished with plaster imitating brick, horizontal and vertical lines are drawn along the ruler corresponding to the connecting seam. In this case, it should be taken into account that the vertical lines through one horizontal row are shifted by half a brick. The drawn strips are painted over the entire length with a paint similar to the color of the applied mixture, and after drying, adhesive tape is glued to the painted lines.

Be sure to first glue the horizontal, and only then - the vertical stripes, in a different order, it will be difficult to remove them later.

Then a layer of decorative plaster is applied to the glued adhesive tape, while smoothing it and leveling it. Smoothness will depend on your preference for embossed or perfectly flat decor.

As soon as the applied solution begins to harden, remove the adhesive tape. A little effort is enough to pull the horizontally pasted strip, and the whole structure will peel off easily. After complete drying, you can apply any method of finishing the decorative wall under the brick.

A decorative brick wall looks more realistic when painted in a tone that is lighter than the material itself. After drying, the paint becomes darker.

There are many ways to make the interior of your home unique. Modern styles are popular, assuming an orientation towards providing free space in an apartment without separating it with partitions. They also allow you to combine various design solutions, thanks to which you can successfully combine the rough design of brick walls with modern metal interior items, newfangled appliances. Imitation of brickwork will give freshness and originality to the apartment.

There are two main ways that allow you to perform these works with the greatest efficiency and aesthetic appeal:

  1. Imitation of brick with fire-resistant gypsum tiles with the necessary insulating qualities.
  2. The image of masonry in the form of a pattern that is applied to wet plaster.

Imitation using a drawing is a fairly common option that allows you to save on materials. In addition, the work itself is simple and does not require a lot of time and resources.

How does a drawing on plaster make an interior original?

Drawing bricks on plaster can be quite an exciting activity that allows you to realize your imagination and creativity. The walls of the apartment will look new if the seam lines between the sections are slightly curved. Such slight negligence gives naturalness to the interior, creates the illusion of real masonry.

You can paint the resulting rectangles of bricks in their natural color, or you can leave them without staining or paint over the seams with a darker paint. In the first case, you will further emphasize the naturalness of the masonry, and in the second, you will focus on minimalism in interior decoration.

The master also has the opportunity to experiment with the shape of the bricks themselves, making them the correct configuration with pointed edges. Additionally, each rectangle can be processed on the front side, giving it either smoothness or some unevenness and roughness.

Antique decoration is also a good option, when all imitated brickwork is aged due to special surface treatment and its coloring.

Imitation of brick in the interior with smooth and ragged edges

It is not at all necessary to draw each brick even and the same size. You can give them completely different sizes and shapes, depict jagged edges and notches. This decoration will look great when decorating a seating area in the living room. An interesting option is to combine such masonry with other methods of wall processing.

Plaster imitating masonry looks like expensive clinker tiles

Preparing the walls for decoration

At the initial stage of work, it is imperative to align the walls. The long rule measures the curvature of a surface. Since the thickness of the finishing layer does not exceed 1.5-2 cm, it is necessary to get rid of serious (more than 2 cm) vertical wall distortions. For this, a plaster mixture is used. Decorating should begin after the mixture has completely dried - approximately a few days after leveling.

So that the layer of plaster does not peel off in the future, it is necessary to prime the walls before applying the mortar. It is required to choose the right primer depending on the material of the walls. The number of primer applications is also individually determined.

After carrying out the preparatory work, you can start decorating the walls in the form of brickwork. For this, two methods are most often used:

  1. Cleaning seams with a scraper;
  2. The use of masking tape for decoration.

What is the best mixture to use?

For the image of brickwork on the walls, the most suitable material is gypsum plaster. When choosing a mixture, it is advisable to focus on brands that are characterized by:

  • ease of application;
  • exclusion of shrinkage;
  • no need for preliminary and additional puttying of the walls;
  • environmental friendliness of the composition.

When applying a layer of plaster with a layer of 1 cm, the consumption of the mixture per 1 m2 of the surface varies between 8-9 kg. It is not recommended to mix gypsum plaster mixture with tile cement adhesive, so that cracking and peeling of the finishing layer from the base does not occur.

Imitation of brickwork with a scraper

To carry out work on the application of gypsum plaster, it is advisable to have the following tools:

  • steel spatula with a blade width of 20-25 cm for applying plaster and leveling it;
  • narrow spatula with a blade width of up to 10 cm for the convenience of working with a wide spatula, as well as for correcting small flaws;
  • a scraper, for which you can choose a chisel or a home-made steel plate with a blade thickness of up to 1 cm;
  • long rule 1.5-1.8 m;
  • jointing used by masons.

Depending on the volumes of the prepared solution, the surface area for processing is calculated. After priming the wall, a layer of the mixture is applied with a wide spatula, which is then leveled. The marking of the seams can only be done after the solution has dried. To do this, a long rule is applied to the wall, and in the horizontal plane, the edges of the seams are drawn with the sharp end of the plate. Their thickness ranges from 5 to 10 mm.

When drawing seams, you need to take into account the planned pattern. It is advisable to focus on the standard brick size 250x65x120 mm. In this case, masonry standards are most often used:

  • in half a brick;
  • into a brick.

In both cases, when marking, the dressing of vertical seams is taken into account.

When the seams are outlined, they are processed with a scraper. It is necessary to apply a pattern imitating masonry first along long horizontal seams, and then along short vertical ones. The width of the planned seams is carried out with a scraper, removing excess plaster. The cleaning depth of the seams is determined by the design intent, but it is recommended to adhere to a finishing depth of 3-6 mm. Seams can be shaped with stitching.

Using masking tape to draw seams

The use of masking tape is a more time-consuming option for performing work, since often the adhesive tape is difficult to separate or be removed with part of the mortar from the bricks. After removal, you will additionally need to process the edges of the drawn sections.

After priming on the surface, mark the seams with a pencil and stick a narrow masking tape on them.

If you decide to use this approach, then you should first prime the wall. Then the future seams are drawn with a pencil. This must be done before applying the plaster. The markup can be taken standard - in half a brick or a brick. Masking tape is applied to the lined seams, the ends of which must be brought out of the area to be treated.

Gypsum mortar is applied to the wall using a spatula. Seams closed with adhesive tape are also covered with plaster. Then the plaster is leveled. It should dry out, after which they pull the end of the tape and carefully remove it. Together with the adhesive tape, the plaster from the seams will also be removed. You should avoid delaying the process, because when the mixture dries completely, it will not be possible to correctly remove the adhesive tape.

Surface painting

After creating the seams, it is advisable to eliminate all imperfections in the appearance of the pattern and allow the plaster to dry. The remains of the solution on the edges are removed with a dry cloth until the solution is completely dry. A damp sponge will help make the edges smoother and smoother.

Then a layer of paint should be applied to the prepared drawing in two stages:

  1. The paint is used to paint the entire wall. You can work effectively with a brush or spray gun.
  2. With a brush, paint of the selected color is applied separately along the entire length of the seams.

Using the brickwork imitation method in decorating the interior of the premises is a good solution that enlivens the atmosphere and gives the apartment originality. This work can be done independently, choosing the color of the masonry, dimensions, shape of the seams and brick sections.
